"The Attempt to burn disc failed. The device failed to calibrate the laser

I was trying to burn a cd the other day and it failed and this massage came up.
"The attempt to burn disc failed. The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media."
does anyone know how to get rid of this or know how to fix it?

In my experience the problem is random. Sometimes I burn with no problem. This morning my first burn worked fine. Then I had 4 failures in a row. Tried changing nothing. Tried changing burn speed. Tried quitting itunes, etc. Nothing always works so I assume that my manipulations are having no effect even though eventually it works. I am now having a sucessful burn. Thank goodness that it does not ruin the blank but it seems to be increasing in frequency. I used to have the problem once and then could burn 4-5 successfully. Now I've had 3 successes our of 8-9 tries.
Why doesn't apple address this problem? I see hundreds of posts with the same problem. Many are archived. Some like this thread claim to answered. But the problem is that, in my experience, the problem comes and goes. Sometimes I have sucess without changing anything after a failure. Today I quit iTunes and when I started it up again it failed once and now its just finished a sucessful burn. I'm burning the same playlist each time of unprotected music but I notice no difference whether I'm burning purchased music, ripped music, downloaded music, aiff, aac, acc protected, mpeg or a mixture of same.
My sucessful burn was at 6X. Now I'm having a sucessful burn at maximum possible (6X takes too long!). Two in row!
I am using tiger 10.4.5 1 ghz powerpc g4 512 mb ddr sdram with about 10 gigs free on the hard drive it that's of any relevance.
Just realized that if I can count to 30 before the intialization goes to writing it is going to fail. So what? I don't know, can't stand the suspense.

When trying to burn a CD, I'm getting an error that reads:The Attempt to burn disc failed.  The burn failed because of a medium write error.  I experienced this message before and took my Macbook in to the store and the the genius was stumped but when he tried one of his CD's it burned fine to he concluded that the problem was in the CD's NOT the Macbook or program  HOWEVER, months later, I'm having the same issue using the NEW CD's.  Does anyone have any information about this?

    3 methods to fix this:
The first is to reset pram
at boot up hold four keys down till you hear 3 chimes:
    command(apple)=option+p+r
release keys and it will now reboot.
The second is to reset nvram
at boot up hold four keys down:
    command(apple)+option+o+f
    a black screen will appear
    now type: reset-nvram
    click enter
    now type: reset-all
    click enter
    it will now reboot
The third is to open system preferences.
    go to international

make sure "order for sorted lists" is set to english
make sure "word break" is set to english(united states, computer)
    then restart.
I hope this helps you as it certainly did me. :^)

  • "The attempt to burn disc failed."

    Hi,
I have an older MBP, from July of the first year they were sold...2006? Can't remember. Anyway. I am running tiger still and everything is up to date. 10.4.11, iTunes 7.6 etc etc....
Anyway. My problem is, I can't get anything to burn!! Extended hardware test does not reveal any problems...
    Here is what is happening..
I want to burn music so that I can play it in my car. I had a stack of 2 year old Sony CD-R's that I was using and they were perfectly, except I ran out of them. So I bought the same exact thing again...and iTunes spits out the cd and says "The attempt to burn disc failed. The burn failed because of a medium write error." Ok so I tried another disc. Same issue. Then I went and took one of my brothers 2 year old Sony CD-Rs and it worked perfectly. So I exchanged my new stack of cds for the same thing, same issue and returned them.
Since then I have burned a couple of movie DVDs on Sony DVD-Rs and they work fine. I have even burned data DVDs on Playo DVD-Rs.
This evening I purchased a stack of HP Music CD-Rs and guess what! My computer spit them out and said the same exact error message!!!
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Is it a Tiger issue?
It can't be hardware related because I have proven it can burn with no problem (just on older cds). Is it maybe a cd issue? Are newer cds somehow formated in a different way that will not work with my combination of hardware and software?
Maybe I should just spend the $300 and get an ipod adapter installed in my car...
    Thanks
    Adam

    Hi ASal,
If your Optical drive is reading correctly then the report suggests that there is already data on that disc and it cannot be written to again. Needless to say, only a CD/RW can be burned to more than once. Your info suggests that it is definitely a CD-R.
Double click your disc mounted on the desktop and see if there is any data on it. If there is then you cannot burn to it again. (Not without burning the data in "Sessions."-- A CD-R can have multiple burns in different sessions, but it cannot write over the top of already existing data. You will need a CD/RW if you wish to be able to completely erase and write again. See how you go. Hope this helps.
It appears that your profiler is well able to SEE the CD-R, but you still might have CD Burn issues. Have you tried just burning data to a CD-R through the Finder to see if burns successfully..? If it does, then you should be able to burn audio through iTunes too. Make sure youre not trying to fit too much data on the disc too. That is a common error with people...
Make sure the discs you are using are completely blank.
    Regards,
    Ben.

  • TS1436 The attempt to burn disc failed. An unknown error occured (4310)

Trying to burn audio CD for first time using new acer computer with windows 8, and get the following message:
"The attempt to burn disc failed. An unknown error occured (4310)"

    same deal.
acer 4752, windows 8 x64, less than 1 year old.. used to burn CD's ok in iTunes but now gets error 4310.
    I tried..
lowering the CD write speed (even down to 1x). --> fail. still 4310. I tested the CDR by burning some random files in windows and it worked fine.
using compatibility mode with windows 7 and windows XP. not only did both not help, but XP mode crashed iTunes. --> fail.
giving up and using windows media player. This worked! resolved, yay..

This is a fairly brand new Windows 8 laptop with all hardware and most software out of the box. I did have Virtual Clone Drive installed, but I unistalled it to rule it out as a culprit.
Every time I try to burn a disk, it briefly says "Initializing..." then "Cancelling..." then the error in the subject. This happens at every speed (down to 4x), and regardless of audio or MP3 CD option chosen. Below are the diagnostics results.
P.S. I was able to successfully burn an audio CD from Windows Media Player at 24x (I think).

  • The attempt to burn disc has failed. Unknown error has occured (-50)

I just updated Itunes to 11.2.2.3 and there was never a problem before. Now I made a mix and it states that (-50) error. I tried burning a regular cd and it let me that I copied to my itunes which i bought. When I made a mix of songs it stated that. Can you please help me.

I found the answer. When you create the songs and edit them. Some songs took to long to start so I changed the seconds on when they should start. You need to make it normal. Whalah and it works.

The device is not accessible, probably because it was removed". I have never had it touched so the device was not removed. Please advise as to what could be the problem. How to fix. Thanks

Try resetting the SMC and PRAM first, if that doesn't help try a cleaning disc.....and then buy an inexpensive external burner. Slimline super drive failures are all too common.
    To reset the SMC
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • "The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to respond properly"

    Hello everyone,
I have suddenly developed a problem when trying to burn a CD. I get the "Checking playlist" and "Initializing" messages, and then Writing...(the name of the first track)", but about 20 seconds later, just when seems as if it will start burning, the CD is ejected and I get the following message: ""The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry."
I have browsed the forums here and it seems that many other people have had similar problems. I am running a Powerbook G4, OS X version 10.2.8, iTunes 6.0.5.
I have used several different brands of media, and many slower burning speeds, but nothing helps.
I can still listen to CD's with my computer, just not burn anything.
My computer is about 5 years old. Do you think that this problem is suddenly occurring simply because my optical drive needs to be replaced?
Also, another issue, possibly related, but maybe not, is that, after my burn failed for the first time, I put in a completely different CD to see if it would play. It did, but instead of listing the correct tracks on the CD, it showed the tracks of the previous playlist that had the failed burn.
For example, I imported the tracks from one CD into my Library, then moved them to a playlist. When I tried to burn the contents of that playlist to a CD, I received the "attempt to burn failed" message that I previously described.
Then, I inserted a completely different disc, but iTunes read it as having the same contents of the playlist that had failed to burn, but when I clicked on the track titles, they played from the new CD that I'd inserted, not the failed playlist. So although the titles indicated that I was working with the failed playlist, the media that played was from the new CD.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Sarah

    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

I'm having a similar problem. In my case, the problem started about two months ago. I regularly update software. Currently I'm at 10.4.10 and iTunes 7.3.2(6).
In my case, I'm trying to backup recent iTunes purchases. I'm unable to burn CDs with the original combo drive (CD) or my internal NEC burner (DVDs). I get a series of coasters. Occasionally .Mac Backup fails as well. Toast 7 works fine. Even stranger, I can burn 1 DVD successfully with an external Pioneer DVD burner (4x) USB 2 using iTunes. (I have a belkin USB 2 card) Multiple DVDs fail. I recently switched to this PowerMac from an iBook and several preference files were copied with my home directory during the transition. The external drive was used with the iBook, but not on this system before which may lend to the preferences file as a possibility.
However, I find it odd that my external drive works and both internal drives are failing. I was suspecting the IDE controller on the logic board, except that Toast works. This logic board is not as old as the computer. It was a replacement in 2005 when an after market ATI card fried and took it and the power supply out. At first I suspected a hardware problem and replaced the IDE cable which looked warn. The NEC drive is about two years old and the combo drive is the original. They are on the same controller.
In my case it is certainly possible the drives or controller are starting to fail. I wonder if anyone else might have an external cd/dvd drive they could test that are having the problem.

  • "The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to calibrate...."

Using my "new" used 20inch-iMac G5, I just successfully burned my first music cd.
Moments later, I tried (repeatedly, with a half-dozen different blank cds) to burn a second music cd, and got the following message each time:
"The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media."
    1) What does that message mean?
    2) What should I do next to fix the problem?
    thank you

I'm really getting tired of this, so I decided to bit the bullet and try to get it fixed. (Note that I'm talking about a 2-year old G5 iMac.)
    THE BAD NEWS:
Apple store genius bars see this error "a lot" (even just this week), and it's usually the optical drive that needs to be replaced.
    THE GOOD NEWS:
In Apple's article Do It Yourself iMac G5 parts you can install, they say, "iMac G5 computers are designed to make it easy for you to install replacement parts if you need to. These parts are known as Do It Yourself (DIY) parts." Listed among these parts is the optical drive. Apple even provides a PDF manual describing the simple process of replacing the optical drive.
    THE IRONY:
An Apple store will NOT sell you this part, even at their high price of $221. They insist on doing the installation. And the price for this 10-minute procedure -- described in their online manual as sliding the drive into place and replacing the screws -- is an additional $130 (and I'm guessing they won't do it while you wait). That seems to be a labor rate of around $780 per hour for a "Do It Yourself" replacement that they won't let you do yourself.
So Apple's $351 price to (maybe) get an old G5 iMac burning CDs again is almost 1/3 of what a brand new aluminum Core 2 Duo iMac costs.
    THE UPSIDE:
Online third parties will sell you a "genuine Apple" super drive for around $145 (or a combo drive for $95) to install yourself. (Use Google to search for "imac g5 optical drive replacement cost.")

    try this...
This is how I managed to fix the problem...and I hope this helps others in the similar situation.
I tried with another program..latest version of Nero, and this was also stopping at the 'initialising' stage. I was now lost! I thought the last resort is to give Evesham (My PC manufacturer) a buzz. They were very helpfull. Basically go into 'Control Panel', 'System', and click on the Hardware tab, then 'Device Manager'. Uninstall everything in the DVD/CDRom Drives. Then uninstall everything under the catagory IDE ATA/Atapi disk controllers. This is where my problem was, as I only had one IDE channel here. You should have 4 or 5! Reboot your machine, and everything will automatically re-load. I tried burning using Nero and it worked. Then the big test was iTunes. It worked 1st time!
I asked why the IDE channels have dissappearred, and he said sometimes uninstalling Programmes occasionally removes them.
I hope this will help others who are having problems to burn stuff on iTunes.

  • Mac mini error message: The attempt to burn a disc failed. Help

    Hi,
I'm not sure what has happened but I have tried to burn a CD and a DVD and have received the same error on both occassions, which read:
"The attempt to burn a disc failed. The deviced failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media."
I'm not sure where to start to troubleshoot this. My mac mini is several years old now and in the past I have been able to burn both CDs and DVDs. Please help.
    Thanks
    Bianca

Calibration failures may indicate a dirty drive or a defective drive. Obviously the cheaper and easier thing to try first is to clean (or have cleaned) the drive.
