The back button is inoperable on some websites

When I visit a website and then open a link, the back button is greyed out and will not let me back into the previous page.

Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Note that you can hold down the left mouse button on the Back or Forward button to open the tab history and select an entry.

• The back button doesn't work for some websites after downloading version 4.0

I recently downloaded firefox version 4.0. Upon downloading it I had a few issues occur with my browser. One issue was that all of my bookmarks that were on my toolbar disappeared. Also, when I visit a website and am browsing through it, if I want to go back to a previous page the back button doesn't work properly. Instead of sending me back to the previous page I was viewing it sends me all the way back to the home page or wherever I started on that website. This problem basically affects all websites that I visit. I would like to uninstall the new version of firefox and just go back to my old one if that's possible? Thanks

To respond to your comments first of all, the Bookmarks toolbar has been removed in Firefox 4.0
The back button should work as it normally does, but you can also right click it and select it from the list.
To revert to a previous version of Firefox, download v3.6.16 from here: Download Firefox v3.6.16
Then uninstall Mozilla Firefox 4.0 choosing to keep your bookmarks, customizations etc.
Finally run the Firefox installation file you downloaded earlier.

• I can't use the BACK button to get back to Google after visiting some websites.

If I use certain web pages, I can't get back to my Google search after I finish. The BACK button says the page expired, and that I should ask the site to send the page again. I do not want to see that page, but just step past it to the page before it.
There should be a way to tell Firefox that I don't really want to see that page again, but just to keep going back to the page before that.
This usually happens on pages with forms.
Some other pages actually destroy my BACK button history when they start. How can I prevent this? I have often seen another page I wanted to go to next in the search, and then the page I went to first erased my BACK button list. Then, when I went to search again, I couldn't find the other page.

• Certain websites are being automatically redirected to another unwanted page repeatedly even if I use the back button

The last 12 hours or so when I've visited certain (reputable!) websites, as soon as a page has loaded I've been redirected to some random other site (usually some Mens Health or Weight Loss Secret crap). When I hit the back button the exact same thing happens. I've checked my Firefox add-ons and I've got nothing dodgy, I'm on a Macbook so I don't think it's a virus. I'm pretty computer illiterate so simple answers would be lovely, thanks

There are viruses for the Mac, of course, but a bad add-on seems more likely...
Could you test those pages in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features of Firefox. More info: Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode.
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
* "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
* Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run
After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset).
Any difference?
If Firefox works better but none of the extensions look suspicious to you, do you want to post a list of them for review? A relatively easy way to extract them is as follows:
Open the support information page using either
* "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
* (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
* type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter
In the upper left corner, click the Copy text to clipboard button. Then start a new reply to this thread and paste in the result. The Extensions are the second block of information. If you scroll down to "Important Modified Preferences", you can delete from there to the end.
Also, could you check that no unusual connection settings have been entered into Firefox?
"3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences > Advanced > Network mini-tab > "Settings" button
Normally "Use system proxy settings" is selected, but you also could try "No proxy" to see whether that works any better.

• The back button doesn't work on some pages

I go to bookmarks and navigate to a page, when I use a link on that page to go to another part the back button on the tool bar does not become active to I can go back. This seems to be happening on all web sites.

There used to be a very useful down arrow button next to the back button which brought up recent history, but it was removed in Firefox version 4. For the life of me, I don't understand why. If you have an older version, just click the down arrow button and select the page you were at before you loaded the offending page.
If you have Firefox v 4 or 5, the best workaround I know of is to do an <alt-s> from the keyboard, which will bring down a history list from which you can select the page you were at before you got trapped. Alternatively, you can bring up the old style menu bar by pressing either Alt or F10, and then drop down the history menu by clicking on it with your mouse. If you want to make that menu bar permanent, you can select View -> Toolbars -> Menu Bar.

• On certain websites, my own, that use flash the pages do not work if you use the back button in the browser. They have to be refreshed before any of the links will work again. Very frustrating.

When I am browsing my own sites (2 of them) which are built in Flash, everything is fine following the links on the pages. But if I hit the back button in the browser, the pages freeze up and none of the links work anymore. If I refresh the page, then the links work fine.
This does not happen on Safari as after pressing the browser back button, all is well.

Dear jscher2000, thank you for your response! I'm running 16.01 version, so the 3.6.20 version isn't the correct one. I've updated it yesterday.
I also have to mention that today everything seems to work just fine! :) I don't experience the problems anymore and all links work again just normally, eventhough I'm logged into Facebook account. Maybe it was just a temporary bug.
I couldn't say what was the reason to that solution, but I'm glad there aren't problems anymore with Mozilla.
Thank you again and best regards,
Nina

• Some of the time the back button is greyed out when i have clicked on a new link. It's not a new window or tab, and the page I came from is not even in my history!

At first I thought I had unknowingly gone to a new tab or window, but that's not it. I haven't ruled out that I have completely lost my mind, but I'm really hoping that's not the problem, although with win 7 that seems more and more likely all the time. It seems to happen at random. I tired holding down or right clicking the back button but there is nothing. The fact that the page I came from is gone from the history seems really strange.
Sorry for the duplicate post, see this topic: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/807937

This issue can be caused by the McAfee SiteAdvisor extension.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
See:
* Troubleshooting extensions and themes

• When I open a new tab, then go to a new website, the back button doesn't work.

For instance, I open craigslist in a new tab, then I click on "sporting goods". I try to click back to go back to the original craigslist page and the back button is not lit up and does not work. However if after I am on the sporting goods page (the second page I've looked at in that tab) I click on a set of golf clubs, the back button works to go to the sporting goods page.
Please help, I have to use explorer in the mean time :(

I had this problem, but in addition, the refresh button didn't work on the new tab. If you're running McAfee SiteAdvisor, disable it in the addons menu, allow firefox to restart, and see if that solves the problem. It did for me.
This problem has been reported on McAfee's forum and they say they're working on a fix.

• Sometimes the url's don't update so when you press the "back button" it sends you to the home page instead of the last page visited

A friend of mine has this webblog and I have never had problems viewing it before I downloaded the new version of firefox. However, once I downloaded the new version, I noticed that every time I press the "back button" after viewing a picture, it sends me back to the blog home page instead of the last page I was on or that I viewed. This also happens with some of the standard websites I visit not just the blogs.

Right click the Back button and select the page you want to go back to.

• Does anybody know how to fix the back buttons?

The back button in the browser doesn't seem to be working in my JSP page by default. Is there a code(JS or anything) I need to place in the JSP file to make the back button work?

Hi Onamika,
The back button in the browser doesn't seem to be working in my JSP page by default !!
Did u disable the back button using Javascript in any of ur JSP codes in the previous pages ? If u did so, please re-enable it using Javascript again.
If u mistakenly opened some site that has disabled ur browser's back button, then probably the only way to retrieve it back is to shut down IE, then restart ur system and then re-open that website again....but make sure not 2 go 2 that page that disabled the button.
Hope this helps.
Cheers !!
Sherbir.

• All of a sudden it seems firefox has forgotten where it is all the time. All my bookmarks and rss feeds are gone and a lot of times it forgets my saved usernames and passwords. The back button has ceased functioning as well.

It just started out of the blue, its like it just forgot everything I've done since I downloaded it years ago. Plus the back button doesn't work anymore. It's like it has constant amnesia.

Sounds that some SQLite database files are corrupted.
A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Bookmarks+not+saved#w_fix-the-bookmarks-file
You can also try to repair the places database with this extension:
Do you mean names and passwords in the Password Manager or do you mean that you are no longer logged on to (remembered by) websites after closing and restarting Firefox?
There is a difference between remembering the name and password in the Password Manager and a "remember me" check box on a web page to log you in automatically.<br />
The latter usually involves the creation of a special "remember me" cookie that is stored on your computer and that is send to the server.<br />
If that "remember me" cookie is removed or gets corrupted or is not send to the server then the server won't remember you anymore and you need to sign in once again.<br />

• How to get the values retained on clicking the back button in jsp page

Hi All,
I had two jsp's search and results. In the search page when i enter some values in the text fields, the rsults will be displayed for that search criteria. I had a back button in the results page. When i click on this back button i will get back to my search page. I am using the following code for this back button.
<INPUT TYPE="button" VALUE='Back' onClick="javascript:history.go(-1)" class="button">
Now the problem is when i get back to search page using this back button, i am not able to get the values in the search page which i entered, i am getting all blank values. What should i change to get these values back in the search page. Should i maintain any sessions for this?

You have no control at all over the back button process. To the server, it's indistinguishable from the user simply tying the URL of your search page. So, you need to store this data server side*.
When your search page is submitted and processed, store the values you received for each of the fields into the user's session. Then, when the search page is generated, check the session for these values, and for any values that are not null, put their values into the html as the default values for the textboxes and controls you are using. This lets you handle the whole matter on the server's side.

• When I open a second Firefox browser window, the URL address window, instead of showing the URL, says "Go to a Web Site;" also, and more importantly, the "back" button is greyed out. This is a new problem, and the first Firefox window I open works fine.

After I open the first Firefox browser window, any additional window I open does not open my homepage, but opens a blank page with "New Tab" showing on the tab. An orange "Firefox" tab with a drop down arrow shows at the upper left hand corner of the screen. All of the options (File, Edit, etc.) are greyed out, however they will work if you move your cursor over them.
The URL address window says "Go to a Web Site". After I've gone to a website, the back button remains greyed out and I am not able to go back to a previous page. My RoboForm and Netcraft toolbars only show up in an abbreviate form. The add-on bar doesn't show up at all.
Again, this is a recent problem, and only happens after I've opened one browser window (which works fine) and then open additional browser windows (as few as one additional).

I had this same problem. Seems to be caused by the web developer tool bar FF extension (this started happening after a recent update to that extension). After disabling it, my FF is back to normal :)

• Is there a way to control the "back button"?

i've got a simple animation intro, ending with the very last
key frame being static with links. then the links will bring up
another page in the same window. but i was wondering if there was a
way in flash to control the back button to bring the user to that
very last key-frame, at the end of all the animation. thereby
skipping over the intro-animation.
also:
i have an html intro page, where you can go to the flash
introduction, or the peoples' old website, or to a Flash-Player
download window. i was wondering if there was a way to create a
link to that end key-frame in order to by-pass the animated flash
intro.
thanks for your help

gotoAndPlay(32) if you have a continuos animation after that
frame and you want to continue it; the number within the brackets
is the number of the frame you want to go to. Or else if you want
to go to a particular frame and stop there, gotoAndStop(32);
