The backup disk image "/Volumes/Scott Steffens' Time Caps/Macintosh.sparsebundle" is already in use.
What do I need to do when I get this Time Capsule error message: The backup disk image “/Volumes/Scott Steffens' Time Caps/Macintosh.sparsebundle” is already in use.
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
First, restart the computer and your Time Capsule. In most of cases, this should solve the problem. If it doesn't work, see > http://pondini.org/TM/C12.html
That's caused by a bug in Lion and Mountain Lion, but it can be caused also because another Mac is using the file

time machine: I get the following message: The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/Clemens’s iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use - what to do? Where and how do I find that file and get rid of it?
I'm on Mountain Lion and have version 6.1 of AirPort utility so there is no button to "Disconnect All Users"and the only other option of "removing and re-selecting the drive via Time Machine Prefs" doesn't work either. So this will work.
Launch Airport Utility and select the TC "Edit" button, then select the Disks tab. Deselect "Enable File Sharing" and click "Update". The TC will reboot then follow the same procedure and reselect "Enable File Sharing" and click "Update". After TC reboots again you'll be up and running. Not the neatest way to do it but saves having to unplug the TC which risks disk damage and the whole procedure takes less than a minute. The "Enable File Sharing" button seems to have replaced the "Disconnect All Users" button but with the slight disadvantage that it reboots the TC which takes up additional time. -
I recently bought a new Time Capsule and the following message has started to show:-
"Time Machine could not complete the back up. The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/Brian’s iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use."
Can anyone help?Pondini is the resident Time Machine expert on the forums, and he has all the answers.

See # C17 in particular -
Time Machine fails with this error: "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Barbara’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use."
Can anyone assist me in correcting the problem causing this? Thanks.Reboot the TC.. Sometimes you need to reboot the whole network.
This is what comes of Lion and then made worse in Mountain Lion of Apple not spending enough time to fix the bugs.
Read C12 in pondini.

C17 can be related I think. -

My normally reliable Time Machine is giving following error message;-
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/JOE OTOOLE’s Computer.sparsebundle” is already in use.
What does it mean and how do I deal with it?I have loaded it into ML using a great and free utility unpkg.. it probably works much the same as Pacifist.
Locate your downloaded 5.6 dmg file.. click it so you can see the pkg but don't bother opening it.
Download, install and run unpkg.
http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Drag the airport utility 5.6 pkg over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory on the desktop.. named AirPortUtility56.. drill down to Applications, Utilities and you will find the unpackaged utiity.. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it where you are.. -

I get message Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to MybookLive The backup disk image Volumes/TimeMachine RobertFurlong's Computer(2).sparsebundle is already in use.Any ideas?.
I have experienced the same problem on a MB Pro 2011 and a 2013 MBAir both with updated OS's. OSX10.9.3. WD MYBookLIVE 3Tbyte. I have found the only solution is to reboot the WD device thru Western Digital's software that you can access via the IP address for the WD device. For example, if you type the WD backup device's IP, like ... "125.261.1.38 " in the Safari address bar, WD has built-in software the runs a program that allows you access to the WD unit to maintain it, turn it off, reboot it, partition it, etc.
Doing this, I believe disconnects or ?dismounts? the WD from TM and resets everything. It works most times, not always, Sometimes you need to reboot the Mac too.
I'm more interested in what is causing this frequent failure on the WD. It happens to me several times per week. I suspect, network failures or improper disconnections between WD and the Mac (not caused but the user) are the culprit but I haven't seen any blogs on a permanent fix. Spent hours on the phone with WD techs; they were clueless. I found the "fix" myself.
Further, I often get an associated reply to "dismount the WD" with the "sparse bundle.XXX is in use" error. But when I go to Finder or Disk Management to find out what's mounted on the Mac, the WD is never mounted, even when the TM backup is working properly. I find the WD device under SHARED in Finder. Its never mounted, so I can't dismount it. -

Mountain Lion
OS X 10.8.1 (12B19)
MacBookPro 2.53 Corei5
All software update installed
Time Capsule : 1TB, 599 of 998GB used
What causes it?
How do you fix it?
How do you stop it happening again?
Any ideas pleaseThanks for fast response.
I already tried C12, no luck. I did read C17, but that did not help either.
I agree that Apple should really spend a bit more time on ensuring this common problem is resolved more quickly
But where to do you sent this request to? Doesn't seem easy to find a person to send it to.
I dumped by corporate wIn-pc environment that I was forced to use for the past ...forever. Have been delighted with the Mac experience..... for 24 months..but these type of un-resolved matters with terse error messages reminds me of the bad old days.
I had the problem 2 weeks ago and solved it by "clicking about" after reading the forum Can't remember what i did though. V. V. V. frustrating when the Mac is a business tool. I don't want to be a mechanic, I want to be a driver.
Thanks again for your help -

First, restart the Mac and the Time Capsule. In most of the cases, this will solve the problem.
