The baseline iMac or the 1 499$ iMac?

Hi,
I have used windows all my life, and I'm pretty tired of it. So, I want to switch to Apple and buy an iMac, but which one should I buy? The baseline iMac or the 1 499$ iMac?
The 27" iMac is a bit too big for my room/ desk, and i don't feel the need of 27". So will the two baseline iMacs edit hd videos in Final Cut Pro X, After Effects CS 5.5, Premiere Pro CS 5.5 etc., without problems?
Thanks in advance!

I'm confused. The cheapest iMac is $1,199.00. You'll need to wait for mavens who do video stuff for their recommendations. To get you started, see these:

Yeah, the baseline iMac (aka. the $1,199.00 iMac) or the $1,499.00 iMac? (Mainly for video editing)

My eyes just glazed over...Please in the future break down each of your issues with paragraphs separated by two carriage returns. It would be much easier when trying to address your issues.
Go to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse -> Mouse
And edit your mouse settings to do what you want it to do.
Secondly, this is not the place to vent. If you have a complaint, there is:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
    or http://www.apple.com/contact/
We are just end users here helping other end users.
Third, from my understanding, it would appear you are concerned about the noise the hard drive makes when it falls asleep? Why not put your machine in screen saver mode instead? Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver turn off all Energy Saver settings, or set them to run Never.
Fourth, if your machine was purchased just a few days ago, you may still be able to get an exchange from the store, quicker than you can get a repair done. You may want to look into that possibility.
Fifth, it does appear you found the Logic forum. I would persist in asking there how to solve your technical issue with Logic regarding the audio. It may be you don't have to do anything special to the hard drive. Remember audio can be transmitted by wire, avoiding ambient sounds.
    Good luck!

  • Will the new baseline imac play portal 2 well?

i have the gt640m nvidia graphics card with 512mb and 8gb ram is this sufficient

It would be better if your contact the makers of Portal to find out what the minimum and maximum specs for best game play.
Gamers, like yourself, tend to want very high performance in their gaming experience.
Good gaming experience requires a fast CPU, GPU and lots of RAM. The GPU is the biggest component in a good visual gaming experience.
My opinion, the baseline iMac model isn't going to be up to the challenge.
You really need to ask the developers of Portal what will be a decent spec to run their game and make a choice of iMac and optional components you need to get that game to run well enough.
    Good Luck!

  • Why is the iphone 4s 199$  but in the UK £499?

Why is the iPhone 4s 199$  but in the UK £499? They say nothing about contracts involved and in the news paper "I" it states that the iPhone 4s can be sold for as little as £99. How do you justify this? this was stated in the news paper dated weds 6th Oct on page 9.

The $199 iPhone in the US is subsidized by the cell carrier, is locked to that carrier, and requires a two-year contract. The £499 price is without any carrier subsidy or carrier lock, allowing you to use the iPhone with any carrier, including with a pay-as-you-go plan. Some UK carriers offer similar discounts when you purchase the iPhone from the carrier with an appropriate contract.

  • How good is the baseline imac at running games?

Will it run Battlefield 2 or Call or duty pretty well?

Here are system requirements for COD Mod Warfare from Apple App Store:

Other than the card not being specifically mentioned it should be fine. You can email COD to ask if you want to be sure.

  • Baseline iMac 2.0ghz for iMovie/iDVD/iPhoto

I plan to use my baseline 2.0ghz iMac with the standard specs for iMovie projects with my firewire camera(most videos would be 30mins-1hour long....burning the edited videos with iDVD...and using iPhoto to organize 5000 photos...
    1) is iMovie going to run okay? with 1gig of ram? will i have to wait a while for rendering (im coming from a 1ghz g4 emac with 512mb ram and its painfully slow) and do i really need an external drive(i only do 1 movie a month then burn and delete)
    2) Will iDVD be slow and freeze like on my eMac? and how long to burn a dvd?
    3) Will iPhoto lag..like it is now on my eMac with 5000 photos? or will it run smooth?
    4) How long does it take to import a CD?
    5) How long to boot up/restart?
My new iMac comes in 7 days..so im exicted and cant wait...
    Thanks

    1) i think you ought to spend the $50 and upgrade to 2GB of RAM. you have 1x1GB in there right now, so all you need to do is add another. and it's super easy to do. imovie will run "okay", but 2GB would really really help.
    2) depends on your work habits and the amount of RAM you have. if you like to keep multiple apps open, more RAM is always better. I don't know how long it will take to burn a dvd, it depends on how long the DVD is. I think the superdrive supports up to 8x writes, but i could be wrong.
    3) in my experience, iphoto runs pretty smooth. i think dividing all those photos into folders is helpful, then iphoto doesn't have to handle them all in one batch.
    4) again, depends on the cd. are you talking about importing a music cd into itunes? it usually takes me just a couple minutes
    5) ~45 seconds

  • Baseline iMac or Macbook Pro?

I'm getting a new Mac soon, and I wanted to know which I should get of the two things I have going back and forth on: Baseline Macbook Pro or iMac? I'm getting it brand new, rather than refurb, so they're the exact same price, but the iMac has so much more to offer: Quad core 2.5 ghz i5, Dedicated Graphics, larger & better display, etc. Yet, I go out and like not to be "landlocked" with my computer.
What I do on a computer:
Minor Gaming (a small dose of Sims 3)
    Web Surfing (lots of Youtube)
Not old enough for job yet
    Going into High School Soon.
Has to last me a minimum of 3 years.
Interested in starting YouTube channel (so starting filming editing)
Go upstate at least once a month
    Lots of Word Processing
    Interested in Photography
So what do you think? Yes, I am aware the 2012 Macs will be released soon, and I'll the baseline of that one. Thanks!

Well, if mobile is a necessity, then the MBP, but the iMac is certainly a better computer, whichever, get the 3 year AppleCare for sure on either one.

  • How can I get rid of a "speck" on the inside  of my iMac's display? please help me. T_T

I have a Mid 2011 21.5 baseline iMac which I bought in March 2012. I noticed it just a couple of days ago, there's a tiny grey "speck" in the middle of my screen. I initially thought it was a speck of dust, which I tried to clean off with a microfiber cloth. Well, it didn't come off. I realized that it was on the inside portion of the glass cover. It's is neglegible when the the screen has a dark image but becomes visible when I use a white background like when I use Pages. There are also severaly tiny grey bubles at the bottom black portion of the glass cover. Ther's also a tiny "crack" like something on the top right area (or maybe just a speck of dust, I'm getting a bit paranoid). I'm kinda OCD about my iMac and this is driving me crazy. Any help would be appreciated.

It's under warranty, take it in.

  • Will the new 21.5" iMac support 16GB of RAM?

I just bought the 21.5" mid 2011 iMac (the $1,499) model. I also just purchased 16GB RAM from OWC to replace the 4GB that came with it. I thought I had read that the 21.5" model can support up to 16GB, but then read this on the iMac spec page: "Configurable to 8GB (all models) or 16GB (select models), only at the Apple Online Store." Can I install 16GB on my machine (4GB per slot, times 4)? I'm worried it won't work because I've seen reference of 8 and 16 on Apple's site as the max.

The spec page says this, so my SWAG is it'll support 16 GB:
    Memory
More memory (RAM) increases performance and enables your computer to perform faster and better. Choose additional 1333MHz DDR3 memory for your iMac.
The more memory your computer has, the more programs you can run simultaneously, and the better performance you get from your computer.
Select the standard memory configuration to support day-to-day tasks such as email, word processing, and web browsing as well as more complex tasks such as editing photos, creating illustrations, and building presentations.
Upgrade your memory to enjoy greater performance for more intensive computing tasks, such as video editing and DVD authoring
Your iMac uses one of the fastest memory technologies available today — 1333MHz, Double Data Rate (DDR3), synchronous dynamic random-access memory (SDRAM) — ensuring that the processor is constantly fed with data without wasting clock cycles.
    4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
    8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB [Add $200.00]
    16GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x4GB [Add $600.00]

  • Will the current gen iMacs be enough, or should I wait?

    Hello,
My Mom wants to get a new computer, and she's been eyeing the iMac for sometime now. Since we're buying a MacBook for college, I thought I'd buy my Mom an iMac.
Personally, I would wait, because I want the lastest and greastest in my computer, but I'm not sure if my mom is the same way. She only goes on the computer once in a while to check Facebook, Youtube and do her banking. She is also big on music, so she'll most likely want to play it on her iMac.
My question is: Will the current gen iMac be good enough to last a minimum 5 years?
My mom will be doing the following:
    YouTube (HD video streaming)
    Facebook
    Online Banking
    Music downloads (legally of course)
And Music streaming (Playing it on her iMac, so she can hear it in the living room, kitchener, where ever she is)
And she will be putting music on her MP3 player, which is a Coby 8GB I believe
    These are her requirments:
She will not spend any money on repairs for atleast 3 years. It must stand up to everything the dust can throw at it.
She needs it to be quick. Her current laptop (HP Pavilion 17 Inch) actually takes 15 mintues to open a simple email client! She wants a machine that will be quick today, and quick tomorrow, and the next day until I buy her a new computer (more then likely in 2015 when my schooling is finished).
She needs it to have good speakers! She judges the quality of the computer by the speakers.
I want to tell her to wait until October for the new iMacs, but I can't! I know she won't buy the new ones because they won't be discounted $100! (I get $100 off every computer as a student in Future Shop). She will buy one now, because she's already buying my Macbook and my sister's PC, so shes motovated to fork over another $1099 because she knows she needs a new computer, but if she waits, the motovation will be gone!
Will the current gen base model iMac be able to handle her needs?
    Thank you

Your asking a tall order for people to give you a recommendation.
    Here's my take.
The baseline iMac, from a computing standpoint will meet your mother's needs.
My advice, you'll need to install more than the baseline 4 GBs of RAM.
Plan on spending extra to buy third party RAM. Install, at least another 4 GBs of RAM for a total of 8 GBs.
The current OS X version will run better and run additional applications better with more RAM added after purchase.
Purchase this RAM from either of these two sources.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/iMac
    OR
    http://www.crucial.com
With this addiitional RAM installed, you'll already be ready when newer OS X updates happen.
The iMac's internal speakers were never the greatest.
They are a little better than laptop speakers, but not by much.
Judging the quality of a computer by its speakers is like judging the quality of a car by its hubcaps.
Tell your Mom that Macs are not PCs. There are a lot less issues with Macs than with Windows PCs.
Macs are more than the some of their individual components. And Apple Macs have much better computer components that what is found in a typical PC.
I doubt they will be strong enough, by themselves to play and hear music from all over the home.
My advice, by a seperate set of powered external speakers that an be plugged into the iMac, or by a portable speaker system that works over wireless Bluetooth/AirPlay that can be easily moved from room to room or is big or strong/loud enough to be put in a central location in your house so that your iMac can stay where it is and transmit signals to a wireless speaker system that is able to play music louder from around the home.

  • Opinion on iMac or MacBook Pro. Please help!

Hey, so I'm in the market to purchase an Apple computer. I just sold my 13-inch MacBook Pro (2010 model) to my brother because I just got an iPad 2 for more portability. I was wondering if I should get an iMac ($1,499 model) or a 13-inch MacBook Pro the ($1,499 model)? The specs don't really matter to me since I will only be storing my iTunes media which is about 200GB.  I will mostly be using it for web browsing, watching YouTube videos daily and listening to music. Do the speakers have good bass?. Please let me know what you guys think? Also if any of you have done something similar to this do you regret it? I will be purchasing the Mac computer in later today. Thank you in advanced

    Hi,
If you don't need mobility, go for te iMac for certain.
Get more RAM here instead of from Apple at least 8 GB total...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/2011/DDR3_21.5_27
If speed is important go for the i7 for $200 more...
    http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MC812LL/A?select=select&product=MC812LL%2FA& mco=MjIwNTQ2NTA
But whichever you decide, get AppleCare for sure, $169 but any repair could run close to a grand.

  • Are iMacs good for playing video games like Skyrim?

I'm most likely to be getting a baseline iMac and I wanted to know if these computers are good for playing video games such as Skyrim before I get rid of my current PC. Also, are these games even compatable with a Mac. I've heard rumors that you can't play these kind of games on a Mac.

So, I can interchange between the Mac OS and Windows at any time I want or did I understand that wrong? Is it a one or the other kind of deal?
Yes, please read the Boot Camp FAQ for additional information.  You will need to buy a license of Windows 7 and once your get the iMac run an App called Boot Camp Assistant and follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows. Once you have you completed you will have both OS X and Windows 7 installed. BTW there is a Boot Camp forum if you have more detailed questions, that is where the Boot Camp and Windows guys hang out.
Note: Whenever you load MS Windows on your Mac it then becomes a  native Windows machine when running Windows. This means like any Windows box it is susceptible to ALL the other issues Windows users have to put up with including viruses and other malware. The good news is even if your Windows partition becomes totally diseased that in no way affects the OS X partition or OS X.

  • Advice/Tips picking up 27" iMac

    My current set up is:
    13" MacBook 2.0ghz Alu Late 2008
30" ACD with Dual-Link to MiniDP
    I wanted to get either the baseline 27" iMac 3.06Ghz C2D or baseline 27" i5 2.66Ghz
and hook that up to my MacBook 2.0 for use as a display once in a while.
I'm wondering if selling the 30" for $1300 ~ $1400 is decent as I currently have an eBay offer for it.
im just wondering also if anyone has compared either side by side the 30" & 27" if the 16x10 vs 16x9 would have a huge impact as far as resolution goes.
Im really intrigued by the IPS panels and getting rid of the older display technology used in the ACD.
any advice, think itd make sense to sell off the 30" for the 1300 ~ 1400 and pick up either of the baseline iMacs.
    thanks!

Thanks again, i recently sold my display for roughly ~$1400 so i got basically what I paid for and couldnt have upgraded to the imac wihtout getting rid ofone component.
i was thinking of getting the 17" uMBP & 27" iMac but im not sur eif thatd be overkill or not.
(a friend of mine had the 17" uMBP and a 30" and compared between them, the 17" Display was way more vibrant and much easier to look at then the 30" as the 30" was really washed out, yet it was fairly colour accurate and didnt look bad, but compared to that little display i liked the 17" display haha)
i tested out the baseline 3.06Ghz iMac at the apple store the other day and i was pretty impressed with it, the color quality looked amazing compared to the 30" behind it.
I think the i5 would be nice but tips the scale of my budget which is no more than 1700~1800 with my student discounts and taxes. which is what the baseline rounds upto after all is applied.
i7 would be a bit overkill for me right now at least. i dont see myself needing that much horsepower i dont htink.
as i was looking for a desktop machine to do some other editing work and have mobile version too.
if anyone has further tips i'd love to know!

  • How do I globally change the font across all pages in a multi-page PDF document

I have a 500 page document. I suceeded in changing only the font on the first page using Acrobat Pro and selecting "Edit Text and Images", selecting "All" on the first page and changing the font.  It worked perfectly.  Now I want to apply that font change to the remaining 499 pages. Any ideas?

Sorry Bill, not how it works. You can select text across a page boundary using the normal multi-select tool for copying, but you cannot edit across a page boundary. If you try to activate the ETI tool from the Content Editing panel or use the context menu "Edit Text" item, Acrobat will trim the selection to the current page only.
The previous two responses are correct - you must either repeat the edit by hand on every page, or go back to the original document and make the changes there (which is the expected workflow for such a drastic alteration).
