The basics please

Having just upgraded my old C1-01 to a Lumia 520, I'm massively disappointed at the lack of basic instructions supplied with the phone. For instance:
1. I called the number to register the phone and was asked to press button 1 - but where's the keyboard? There's no obvious keyboard symbol showing. I kept tapping the screen and pressing buttons until the automated system almost timed out. A keyboard eventually popped up but I have absolutely no idea what did it.
2. How do you  end a call? Why isn't there simply an END CALL button to press? I'm faced with two choices; either wait for the other person to end it (assuming that does completely close the line) or switch the phone off.
3. That damned camera button: I'm continually pressing it by mistake and can't find any way of switching the camera off. My picture folder is full of pictures of my knees, the floor and the walls.
4. That wretched Bing button. The first time I saw it, I assumed it was to magnify the screen, but it is so easy to press accidentally. I detest Bing and would love to make it bring up Google instead. Is this possible? In the meantime, I'm highly tempted to glue a suitably sized rubber washed over the damned button to deactivate it.
5. Setting up contacts. What a nightmare this was. My old and new phone could see each other via Bluetooth, yet my old camera was telling me that my new camera didn't support the transfer service. I eventually solved it by using the option on my new phone to see the C1-01 as an audio device rather than a phone!
Overall, the few instructions supplied assume that you're already a very experienced smartphone user. It's as if every aspect of it has been deliberately designed to be as user unfriendly as possible and when try to Google for answers, I can see that there are very many people in a similar position, who are not receiving useful answers. Is there an Idiot's Guide To The Nokia Lumia? If not, it's about time there was one.

1. the same icon as with any other smartphone basically it's an icon of a keypad (nine dts with one below it)
2. The END CALL button on the same screen
3. you're holding it wrong.. But seriously you'll just need to give yourself a bit of time to get used to it being there.
4. Looking glass is generally the icon for search.
5. There is several guides and tools for this but since you got it sorted that's hardly relevant now.
You basically went from a 2005 or so Fiat punto to a modern day mid range car.. things will be different and you will find you end up looking for stuff and having to get used to hwo thing work in a different way. I'd suggest you accept this and let us know when you have any question without adding the splash of negativity. It's only normal you'll come across bumps when moving up from a basic phoe to a smartphone regardless of the make/OS.

  • Ovi Suite - The basics please!

    Okay, so I know my way around computers and software, yet Ovi Suite is baffling me!
    Can someone please talk me through the basics of how to :
    Upload music to my mobile
    Upload photos to my mobile
    because it's driving me mad!  I can get to the part where it shows some music files, but not all of them.  It really isn't easy to use.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Ready To Print - Need The Basics Please

    Hi, got my site finished recently (www.jamesrobertphotography.com) and got an order for a few prints.
    This is the first time i'm printing my work, so i know very little about it.
    My questions are:
    -what's the largest i can print before quality loss? (Nikon D70, 6.1mp)
    -will printing at my local digital store do the job?
    -do images need to be in CMYK mode?
    -is 300dpi a good number to use?
    -will cropped images cause me trouble?
    Need your help, and thanks in advance for taking the time...cheers.

    HI,
    Congratulations on your first orders and on your photography business.
    However, you will really need to know what you are doing to be successful, therefore, I strongly encourage you to sit down with several good books on printing and read up on the subject.
    Here are some basic ideas that should help you along the way:
    For Printing at Home:
    Images should be in RGB colour mode;
    Proof the images using the profile for your printer before you print;
    Image resolution is dependent on printing output from specific printers, e.g.
    Optimal resolutions for Epson printers are 360 and 180 respectively. 300 is good but the printer will have to do internal math to output it so there can be some quality loss;
    6.1MP images should be able to be enlarged to 12" x 18" without noticeable loss of quality if you use a scaling technique or program;
    Cropped images will not cause you difficult unless you intend to enlarge them ; then, it depends on the severity of the crop and the intended output size.
    Printing from a Store:
    Find out what profile the store is using to print, and use that to proof your images;
    Find out what resolution the store requires for the images;
    Review the output quality of the store prior to selling your images.
    If you are going to operate a photography business, I would strongly recommend that you purchase your own large scale, archival-quality printer. I'm personally biased toward Epson equipment, but others will work. You may wish to buy an Epson 4800 Pro or 7800 Pro. Both offer large capacity ink tanks, banner paper, and unmatched output. This means cost of produciton is cheaper in the long-run, greater profit margins, and quality prints.

  • Help with the basics please

    hello, i am trying to create a window that displays a grid of 100 buttons arranged 10 x 10. I then would like to place a couple of buttons nicely beneath this grid that might exit the program or whatever.
    my problem here is that i can't control the size of the grid the two nested for loops create and it just fills the entire window and dosen't even stay in a 10 x 10 formation, instead it randomly arranges them to fit the two buttons in at the bottom!
    is there some sort of setSize comand i can use so the grid is set to a certain size, maybe of the EAST of the screen?????
    here is my code so far!
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    class trialgrid extends JFrame
    public trialgrid()
                   JFrame frame = new JFrame("One Player");
                   frame.setSize(620, 650); // sets size of window displayed
                   Container content = frame.getContentPane();
                   JPanel grid = new JPanel();
                   content.setLayout(new GridLayout(10, 10)); // contains the grids info
                   content.setSize(100, 100); // this is doing nothing!!!
                   for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++)
                        for (int j = 0; j < 10; j++)
                             JButton square = new JButton();
                             square.setBackground(Color.blue); //nested for loops to create 10 x 10 grid of buttons
                             content.add(square);
                   content.add(grid, BorderLayout.NORTH); // trying to create some sort of layout
                   JPanel form = new JPanel(); // second panel that i want to go beneath grid of buttons
                   form.add(new JButton("OK"));
                   form.add(new JButton("Exit"));
                   content.add(form, BorderLayout.SOUTH); // here i'm trying to put south below "north" grid
                   frame.setVisible(true);
                   frame.setResizable(false);
                   frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
         public static void main (String args[])
         trialgrid gl = new trialgrid();
    }

    1.
    The only problem i have left is one of my original
    l ones..... i need to be able to control the actual
    size (height and width) of the grid that is produced
    by the for loops!!
    Because i want to set the size of the window to 620
    by 650 pixels i wondered if you could control the
    size of the panel and then maybe centralize it in the
    middle so it would have spaces either side and top
    and bottom??
    Read More about:- Layout managers. setPreferredSize(), getPreferredSize() etc
    Subclass a JPanel so that it returns your preferred Dimensions
    2.
    The thing about the buttons is i am later going to
    use something like mouseClicked(MouseEvent);
    getX(),
    getY() to locate the mouse's location to
    manipulate actions. So im not sure yet if i need to
    be able to name each button or get rid of the buttons
    completely!!If you want the effect of buttons and don't want to go to all the extra trouble of interpreting which one was clicked from the mouse coordinates, which is going to be a real pain if you resize anything.. you could try something along these lines...
           private void fillPanelWithLotsOfButtons( JPanel inPanel )
                          JButton currentButton;
                          String s = "";
                          int buttonNumber = 0;
                           GridLayout grid = new GridLayout( 10, 10, 5, 5 ); // 5Pixel spaces Horizontal and vertical
                          inPanel.setLayout( grid );
                         for( int i = 0 ;  i < 10 ; i ++ )
                                      for( int j = 0; j < 10 ; j ++ )
                                                  buttonNumber = ( i * 10 ) + j;
                                                  s =  Integer.toString( buttonNumber).trim();
                                                  currentButton = new JButton(); // you might want to add a Subclass of Button that is set to your wanted size....
                                                 // Or you could do currentButton = new JButton( s );
                                                 currentButton.setActionCommand( s ); // will be "0", "1", "2", ......................................
                                                 currentButton.addActionListener( this ); //  assumes that this classs implements ActionListener
                                                 inPanel.add( currentButton );
            // Then Further on in your code
           // you can tell which button was pressed fairly easily
          public void actionPerformed( ActionEvent event )
                            String myAction = event.getActionCommand();
                            int buttonNumber = Integer.parseInt( myAction );
                            System.out.println( "Button Number " + buttonNumber );
           }or something along those sort of lines
    To Flounder, that idea does interest me a lot, i have
    been thinking i need more panels, maybe East, North
    and West and fill these with ships, a title and
    instructions respectively. **To make sense of this i
    am creating a battleships game** So i need to make
    another 5 panels really so i'm not sure if i could
    add all these to a 6th panel?
    After reading this, I'd suggest using JToggleButton
    you could make a custom subclass with appropriate Images, for selected and not selected
    any code or suggestions greatly appreicated!! Thank
    you

    My computer is registering the ipod however itunes is not. Nothing ive tried has made it come up in itunes to let me restore. I've done the basics (i.e multiple computer restarts, switching USB ports, fresh install of itunes. I've checked the forums and everything I've found has involved things that I have been unable to do involving the itunes restore. Please save my ipod from a hammer.

    You can try 2 things:
    Restart your iPod by - Holding the Power and Home buttons until you see the Apple logo.
    Put your iPod in DFU and restore - Hold the Power and Home until the screen goes black, wait about 2 seconds, release the power button but keep holding the home for 15 seconds, then on iTunes, Restore and Update.

    That's going to be a ridiculous waste of money and energy.
    First of all, the current ATI drivers don't support multiple GPUs, so at the moment even a single 4870X2 would be only a 'normal' 4870 (which is quite a speed beast already). GFX drivers evolve rapidly, so things might look different next month, but when it comes to Linux and hardware there's one Golden Rule: stay away from the newest stuff and wait for proper support to get coded.
    I also wonder what power supply could possibly cope with the differences between idle and full load; that's way beyond 400W. But then, I'm one of those "quiet&green" types where >100W idle is already a bit much.
    I kind of understand that you want to get it done and not worry about hardware for the next 10 years or so, but that's simply not how the hardware world works and never did. At least not for the average consumer.

  • Signed Applet--please tell me something about the basics of it

    Hi guys .
    I am in the process of developing a GUI using an applet.The GUI involves reading a file given as input and parsing it for punctuaion errors.
    This applet has to write to a file called "errors.txt" to report about errors.I came to know from a friend that applets do not have access permissions to write files to disk .This feature can be achieved using Signed Applets .If there is anyone who can tell me about the basics of Signed Applets then please help me as to how I can make changes in my program and elsewhere so that my program is able to do that.
    My program is as follows(if youm need it):
    import java.io.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.applet.*;
    public class textcopy extends Applet
    public void init()

  • What are the basic .jar files to be set in web dynpro project classpath

    Hi,
    I am having a problem while customizing the ESS. I used DTR, DC and imported configuration. After that, I created project from one of the DC(say ess/jp/addr). Later when I open an iView from any Web Dynpro component, I am getting lot of errors without even making any modifications.
    I closed the project and reopened it and reload & rebuilt, but it doesn't solved my problem. In my classpath settings I couldn't find any jar files except the jre_lib. Could you please let me know what are the basic jar files we have to set in classpath and where to get them from. We are using NWDS 7.0.06 version.
    Can you please let me know how to solve this or any other way to work around this.
    It's an urgent to be fixed as early as possible, plz help me out.

  • What are the basic steps for creating a content repository?

    I am trying to create a document store on a file system (fsdb) that will hold files that are ftp's to that location. Is this possible using KM? If so, what are the basic steps for creating a file system repository and using it through KM? I have found stuff on help.sap.com but that only tells you what each component does not what actual steps need to be taken to setup KM, such as user rights , creating an entry point, so that all of KM is not visible, etc...
    If anyone knows of any guides that show a step by step process that would be great too.
    Thanks
    Paul

    Hi Paul
    First of all you need to create a new repository
    Suppose you want to add all the documents under folder Paul under C: Drive
    (Even you can put whole documents of C: drive into Paul)
    Navigate to System Admin -> System Configuration -> Knowledge management -> Content Management -> Repository Manager -> File System Repository
    There you can create a new directory by clicking on button New
    Give the parameters as follows :-
    Name               :           Anything you like
    Description       :           Anything you want
    Prefix (must start with /)  :  Probably same as your repository name like \Paul
    Lookup mode : caseless
    Root Directory   :  C:\Paul
    NOTE:  This is the trick. You need to give the proper path means folder path which you want use as repository)
    Repository Services  :  Any services you want
    Property Search : Managercom.sapportals.wcm.repository.manager.generic.search.SimplePropertySearchManager
    Security Manager         :           AclSecurityManager
    ACL Manager Cache   :           ca_cm_rep_acl
    The save it
    Now see whether the same repository is coming under KM Content or not, if not may be after restart it will come.
    I think the above information will help you. If still you have problem, please feel free to contect me.
