The best compression algorithm to use

Hello Suners,
I have a 7 GB file and i need to compress it to be 2 GB at most in order to upload it and download it faster.
What is the best compression algorithm to use in this case? can i get the desired size and if i do how could i decompress it?

OK,
in fact it's not just a one file it's a folder containing number of files with different types the total size of them is 7GB,
is there an algorithm can compress that folder to at most 2GB and if there one give me a link. You seem to be missing the point that it's the actual data in the files that matters for compression. A 7 GB file consisting of the words "Hello World" over and over again will compress quite significantly. A 7GB image file on the other hand will not compress hardly at all.
Take the java.util.zip package read [http://java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/Programming/compression/] and try for yourself with your data. If you are hoping to compress unknown data from 7Gb to 2GB the answer is that that promise is impossible to make.

Ask the developer. BTW, they claim you can use Blowfish, RC2, RC4, RC5, DES, and AES
    (128,192 and 256-bit) encryption schemes.

  • What is the best compression scheme?

Material shot on HD, downconverted to DV, edited in FCP and now I want to put in onto a DVD. About an hour of material.
What is the best compression scheme? So far testing seems to be export as 10 bit uncompressed and let DVD SP compress it but it's still not great. Lots of compression artifacts in the dark backgrounds.

Also place compression markers at those points in your presentation, where you have sudden scene changes but not because you made an edit at that point. FCP automatically places compression markers at edit points during the edit process in FCP. Then when you export out of FCP, be sure to use the DVD SP Markers export option, (Export as Quicktime Movie) this will then include any compression and chapter markers you've placed in FCP, which will be used by Compressor, during the encoding process to the .m2v file, which helps avoid artifacting on sudden scene changes.
The chapter markers will then be embeded in the .m2v file and used by DVD SP when imported. Personally, I use BitVice, (as my m2v encoder) but compressor works well as well.

Update: The iBook can play any 480p video and higher if I encode them with DivX and in AVI format. But of course this is not compatible with my iPhone 4. At least I can shrink my library now and get away from the full MPEG-2s. I don't get why I can't use Apple's h264 though. There has to be a setting I am missing. The sample Apple h264 videos from the days of Tiger worked flawlessly on my iBook when it was new so the CPU must be capable of decoding it. I really can't understand this.
Also, since I made my videos in English for my family, I had to create soft subtitles for my wife's Chinese family, and I can't get players like QT with perian or MPlayerX to sync them properly to an AVI encoded with DivX, they only sync well with the iPhone 4 m4v/mp4 formatted files I made. This is a real pickle.
So now I may need three or four copies of each video, LOL. I need to hardcode the subtitles if I want to use AVI to playback on older machines, and keep the mp4 file for the iDevices too, while keeping higher quality h264 videos for my American relatives...
If h264 is compatible with my iBook, what is the proper encoding settings? Must I dramatically lower the settings or frame rate? I can settle on 2 copies of each video that way. One iBook/G4/eMac compatible video that syncs correctly with my srt soft subs, and another version that works well with my iPhone 4 and iPad.
All in all, I will end up with more than 3 or 4 version of each video. On my late G5 dual core I have the full 720-1080p uncompressed master files. On my i5 iMac I have the h264 compressed versions for distribution, and lower versions for my iDevices. Now I need to keep either full MPEG-2 files for the iBook to play, or convert to older formats like DivX AVI for our family's legacy machines. I am running out of hard disk space quick now, LOL.
    Is there an easier way?

  • The best compression before  iDVD

I have several iMovies projects and they are huge (I know why). I have not decided yet how I will group them into multiple DVDs. However I am running out of HD space. One of my projects is 26Gb and it is only 1 hour. I know that in DVD size it means only 2G. Many of the projects are finished but they are still using precious HD space.
My question is: In what format do you recommend to compress the iMovie projects to have them close to DVD format to later put them strait into iDVD? I don't want to loose quality or my 16:9 ratio aspect.
    Thank you.
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Please disregard my first reply. After re-reading the original question I rethought my answer and tried to edit, but I ran out of time. Here's my better response:
The best compression that I know of is what iDVD does for you when you save your iDVD project as a disk image. The disk image is a relatively small file (2-4 GB) that can be burned to DVD whenever you want. Each disk image will create one DVD, so you cannot burn more than one image to the same DVD. If you know you NEVER want to edit the iMovie projects and you simply want to save it for burning DVDs later, you can then delete the iMovie project and save only the disk image. This is what I have done with all my iMovies, although I have also kept all my original footage on mini DV tapes.
Going back to your original post, I guess this means you would have to go ahead and decide how to divide up the projects among DVDs, and all that goes with that, before you could free up any disc space. Plus, you'll need at least 10% of your disc space free to even save as a disk image, or things will not go smoothly. So, if you must free up space before going to iDVD and you can't use an external hard drive, then your best bet is to export your iMovie projects back onto mini DV tape. Then you can begin to complete each movie in iDVD, one at a time. As others (more expert that me) have already stated, you don't want to compress in any way before iDVD, as you will suffer significant loss of quality.

  • The best Mac laptop to use Final Cut Pro 4???

I don't know much about Macs and I know even less about Mac laptops! Someone told me that the macbook (Intel based??) would be the best mac laptop to use with Final Cut Pro 4. Could someone tell me if this IS my best option or if I should be looking for a powerbook? What specs do I need to be looking for? I know that I need a G4 or higher, but the memory, speed, etc... I'm clueless about...

Get a MacBookPro 17" and upgrade to FCP5.1
You need the 17" to get the firewire 800 port - necessary if you want to edit anything more than DV or HDV.
The upgrade from FCP4 to FCP5.1 is very inexpensive now (offer expires in mid December) and you would be very foolish to not do it.
    good luck.

  • Which is the best MIDI interface to use with Logic 7 ?

    Hi folks :o)
Firstly, thanks all for any advice you can give. I'm a pro user, but right in the middle of a major upgrade (G4/OS9/CubaseVST32 >> G5/OSX/CubaseSX3/Logic7) & feel a huge learning curve coming on!
    The situation is this:
I have a Steinberg Midex 8 midi interface, plus a MOTU MTPav in the cupboard. The Midex took place of the MTPav because it had much better midi timing under OS9 with Cubase... The Midex8 drivers for OSX, however, are still beta & a pile of rubbish. (It keeps losing communication with the G5.) I'm fed up with how bad Steinberg have been sorting (not!) these problems out (not to mention the fact that Cubase SX3 can't recognise my 'studio' created in Audio Midi Setup either.. arghh!), so I'm considering jumping ship & going entirely to Logic in one hit, plus whichever is the best midi-interface for this software & OSX.
As food for thought, I'm currently thinking of tracking down a 'Unitor 8', having made the (perhaps wrong) assumption that it'd work 'best' with Logic seeing as it was made by Emagic. BUT, despite a lengthy search in Logic 7's manuals & this forum, I can't find any mention of Emagic's 'Active Midi Transmission' protocol & whether or not Logic 7 supports it; AMT is the only reason I'd buy the Unitor. (I've got all the other bases covered with the MTPav.) I'm also concerned about the long-term support issues regarding drivers for the Unitor 8 & OSX; ****, I'm having enough problems with Steinberg & their Midex 8 (which is still a current product in theory!) without throwing Emagic & a midi interface that's no longer manufactured into the pot...
So..... What do you folks feel is the best midi interface to use with Logic 7 as regards tight midi timing & system reliability? Can anyone out there with a big midi setup categorically say "I've got one (or more) of these MIDI interfaces, it works beautifully under OSX & Logic 7, & the MIDI timing is rock-solid, even when put under heavy midi 'duress' " ??
Many thanks again in advance for any feedback!
Your new Logic Pro virgin ;o)
    Jason

Thanks for your reply folks. It's good to hear a number of you are having good results with your MTPav - I guess I'll pull mine out of the cupboard in that case!
As an aside, it's been interesting to note how difficult it's been to get a clear answer from companies (be it shops or Apple) as to whether or not Logic 7 supports 'Active Midi Transmission' on the old Unitor 8 MkII..... (The reference manual has one mention of it in the index, yet points to a page that doesn't say anything about AMT at all!)
If anyone here DOES have a clear answer about AMT with Logic 7, I'd be very interested to hear about it... thanks.
    Kind regards,
    JC

What is the best backup drive to use to backup my windows xp pc and to transfer these files to my iMac i5 new in May 2011 and then to backup my i5 iMac?

Get something with both USB and Firewire connections, as big as you can afford.  Format it Fat 32, plug it into the XP machine with USB, drag and drop the files you want to keep, plug it into the iMac with Firewire, drag and drop again.  If you want to use it just to back up your Mac in future, reformat it Mac OS Extended and enable Time Machine.  If you're likely to want to share the drive with Windows PCs in future, leave it Fat 32.

Yeah, I know I can restore it, but I might as well go ahead and try. I just finished a backup for icloud and itunes to make sure, I'll go ahead and restore it and set it up as new and see how that works. Seems like I have no other options at this point, I'd still like to know what they did with the Download tab in itunes store, if they removed it or if I'm just overlooking it.

  • Wats the best msn messenger to use on your mac ?

whats the best msn messenger to use on the mac + how do you use ichat ??? iv no idea how that works !!! never got a aol account or what ever !! only have msn + gmail

I tried a few different ones, adium was alright, but i prefer just the regular msn for mac. It was weird when I first switched over, but now I like it better than msn for windows. It has a few less options, but nothing is missing that I frequently used. The best messenger for you probably depends on what features you want to have.

Someday - and no one knows when that day will come - maybe all applications will be able to take advantage of the Retina display. But for the present, not many do: including all Adobe applications. There was a demo of Photoshop at the Apple World Wide Developers Conference of Photoshop running at native Retina resolutions but no one at Adobe in marketing is saying when, if or how the upgrade may be coming. It could be a week, it could be a year, it could be 2-3 years. No one knows. And only Apple app's (for the main part) are really utilizing the native Retina display.
I've seen some demos of some applications (Apple's) that take advantage of the Retina display and they're awesome. But in actually working in the here-and-now I've heard quite a few gripes, particularly on the Photoshop forum, of menus looking pixelated and/or 'blurry' so I'm not quite ready to jump into the Retina display boat just now. Don't get me wrong - others have ad are very, very pleased with their selection. But until Retina displays are available on larger monitors, the maximum work area that you're going to be able to use is 15" - and that's simply not enough room for full-blown graphic design. Then there's the cost factor - for the $4,000+ you spend for a completely full-blown Retina kit, you can get a standard MacBook Pro, 16 GB of RAM, a fast SSD and even the Apple Thunderbolt Display for the same amount.
The standard MacBook Pro isn't better than the Retina display: it's just different. And I think (and this is only my opinion - other graphic designers should feel free to jump in here) that it's the best computer that you can get for your specific purposes. And, towards that goal, I have to recommend a very good external monitor (there's nothing more annoying than having to use InDesign in a single-page mode rather than side-by-side because your monitor isn't big enough).
Remember that this is only my opinion and that others might jump in with their own. But I was in the electronic pre-press business for more years than I care to admit and we always - always - worked with at least 19" monitors (and that's back when dinosaurs actually ruled the world).
I hope that others will jump in with their comments. I'm going to follow this thread and see!
    Good luck,
    Clinton
