The Best Guide to Hosting a Website on Mavericks

Hi All,
I'm brand new to Apple products. Besides a company issued iPhone, my first piece of Apple hardware is a Mac Mini I purchased two weeks ago, and I'm on my third full wipe and restart after a six hour fail today.
I want to host a WordPress family website from my house on my new Mac Mini. (I have a HostGator hosting account for other sites, but I prefer to host this one on my own) I've already been doing this for the past three years on a Synology NAS. I've also managed to set up test hosts on linux machines for fun using lamp and webmin, and even by installing the pieces one at a time. I don't even know Linux that well, but I managed to figure it out all quick enough.
However, I am not having much luck with this Mac Mini. Perhaps I'm trying to take on too much by learning the ropes and also trying to set up a website at the same time, but hey, I'm stubborn, sue me.
I bought the server app from the get go and I'm running Mavericks, but I think Server only confused me further with the different web root paths. I was able to get close on my second set up. I installed MySQL and phpMyAdmin, created a db, dropped my WordPress files into the locaton of the default website, and was able to install and log into WordPress locally.
Then it all went to **** while fixing little issues, and I unfortunately couldn't pinpoint what screwed it all up (my bad), and changing things back (permissions, apache settings, etc.) didn't seem to undo what I messed up either. Hence, the wipe.
So, my questions are...is server worth it, or will it just complicate my learning curve? Is there a guide out there you can recommend that I could follow that takes you from start to finish, with or without server? There are some great resources out there, but chances are I've read them and I've still had issues because it did not exactly match what I saw. (It's like there are small pieces left over of other versions in these guides or something) If they show up on the first few pages of a Google search, chances are I've seen and read or at least used them as a reference guide. I'm still open to following one again though if it's worked for a number of you.
This third upcoming try I'm not going to install server unless there's a guide to follow that specifically includes or requires it. What can you recommend for a free guide or blog post out there? What worked for you?
Thanks! I appreciate your thoughts and guidance.

You do not need OS X Server to run a web server. It will probably make things overly complicated.
Unfortunately, Apple removed the simple "turn on web server" switch in System Preferences some versions of OS X ago, but the frameworks are still in place with a little Terminal help. Here's one how-to:
http://igerry.com/desktop/apple-os/enable-apache-web-server-os-x-mavericks.html
It sounds like you already have the MySQL / WordPress stuff down, but post back if you get stuck on specific things. You might want to use the Mavericks forum rather than the Mac Mini one since these issues are not hardware-specific.

  • What is the best way to create a website on a imac g5  (2005)

After reading a variety of reviews of Life 08 I want to know
what the best way to create a website. Should I buy ilife 08
or do something else? There is no iweb on my g5.

If you are a novice then iweb is a good place to start. It will allow you to create a site quickly with the minimum amount of work. You can then learn more as you go along if you want to. To publish you will need web space somewhere. Thats how I started and now I am studying web design with the Open University and am learning xhtml and CSS, then progressing to Java etc. Good luck and have fun - it is quite addictive once you start.

  • Challenge - Where is the best place to host reports given the following limitations?

    Hello All,
I am going to box everyone in a little bit here but where is the best place to host reports given the following restrictions:
    Cannot be within a BPF
Cannot be accessed from via the EPM folders
The crux of here is that some of our end users only want to go and run reports much like you would in a traditional BI environment. Given that BPC has no concept of a portal page for hosting such reports we need the next best thing. Currently we are posting reports to the documents folder but the downside of this is that we need a distinct copy of a report for each environment (DEV, QA, PROD) which is quite unfortunate. Coming from a traditional the seems ridiculous.
    Cheers,

We use EPM folders to save the reports.
Perhaps for your requirement, you should look to Web forms and Web reports..

  • Whats the best guide out right now to installing windows 8

I have bootcamp 5.0.1 and I am really tired of waiting for Apple's support of Windows 8. So what is the best guide that ya'll have seen for installing windows 8 on a mac (more specifically a late 2012 macbook air)? Also, I would love some help on figuring out how to get the best drivers while we wait for Apple to get their crap together.
    Thanks,

Windows 8 is not supported by Apple, so they don't provide installation guides at this time.

  • What is the best e-Sata PCI RAID card for Mavericks.

What is the best e-Sata PCI RAID card for Mavericks.  Bought a new MAC PRO with Mavericks and the older PCI 1095,3124 that I used on older MAC Pro does not work.  The MAC sees it, but the drivers never show up as being installed.  If I could find drivers that work or a recommended PCI card it would be appreciated.
    Thanks

PM made sense - 6 yrs ago when disk drives were much slower. Today it is a bottleneck.
SAS makes more sense. Outside of SSD, no disk drive maxes out by itself one PM interface (an SSD will) but it also means just two drives are enough to do so. So check out why to avoid PM:

  • What is the best HD render for a website's background?

I have created a moving background and I am rendering it in PHOTO JPEG format but when I convert it to .GIF to post it on my website, it takes away all the high quality. It is a moving background, what is the best format to render it in to post it as the website's background?

Sorry, but that is totally insane and contradictory because quite simply it's not technically possible. Either you live with the reduced quality and limitations of an animated GIF or you use a static background. And even then I would predict that your GIF fiel may be way to heavy for web site use. You really need to reconsider your strategy and read up on web design in general. this simply cannot work the way you want it to.

  • What is the best way to host an interactive PDF in a website?

I am making an interactive fashion magazine with DPS and I need it to be put into a website, but haven't found a simple solution yet. I am not very well versed with HTML, so something without too much of that would be good.
What type of website would be best (wordpress, wix etc.) and how do I do it please!?

e777y, Those are incompatible formats. While you might get the content and some of the interactivity there is no way to duplicate the DPS format in PDF. If you have a Pro or Enterprise account you can look at the DPS web viewer.
Trung.vu, please start a new thread...you are NOT having the same issue.

  • The best tool for determining which website to visit - and not getting a virus.

    www.mywot.com/
This browser add on is community serviced - and free. What it does is it has a database of user reviews of websites - to determine if people have had problems with the website (adware, virus's, false information, etc). If it is a RED rated site, you'll get a huge popup telling you so, and why. It also places rings next to website links with a green, yellow or red coloring - letting you know if it's safe to click.
This protects a lot of people who are uncertain, stumbling around on the internet. Ok, it also protects people who are more advanced that just plain arn't paying attention, LOL
Best Buy obviously does not endorse this tool, etc - this is just my personal opinion. But use it
I am a Bestbuy employee who volunteers on these boards on my own time. I am not paid for posting here, and you should understand that my opinions are exactly that - opinions. I do not represent Bestbuy in any way.

Great suggestion Red. I think you made it clear it wasn't fool proof and I doubt any of the av tools is going to anything above and beyond the info you are going to get from this kind of free tool.

  • IE8 and prior not showing Edge Websites. Whats the best solution?

    Hi All...
Whats the best solution to have Edge websites appear on IE8 and Prior internet Explorer versions.?
Is it too weird to Design the whole website in Adobe Edge? should I just use this sofware to create partial animations for webpages?
I see lots of arguments around SEO too. Very confused if I should trust Edge to replace the HTML5-JavaScript-CSS3 handcoded websites.

    Hi, Departure-
There are a couple of options for displaying to users of IE8 and below: you can display the down-level stage (which, by definition, displays to browsers that do not support Animate content), or you can turn on the Google Chrome Frame, which is available in the Web section in the Publish Settings dialog.
    Hope this helps.

  • Best way to build a website with hundreds of pages

What is the best way to build a website with hundreds of pages that include businesses in every city of the U.S. I will be building it in Dreamweaver CS4 and pulling the data from an MS Excel spreadsheet.
I started building it by building the first page and then saving a new page with new data and so on.
There must be a way to pull from the Excel doc without copying and pasting each page of data, and there must be a way to build this site smaller and easier to make changes when needed.
    Thanks

You already have other people addressing the DB issues - so I will bring up the other... You are just saving a copy as a new page and then copy and pasting the changed content into  it?
What you want to do is take the first page, once you have your design done - and save it as a template (file - save as - Dreamweaver Template).
Then you want to select the areas (most likely the divs you have content in) that will have content changed, and select the div or p or whatever element... and go to Insert - Template Objects - Editible Region.
Make sure you don't made editable the areas that are the primary design - such as a logo element, a header image, the navigation etc.  If you want to change those - you would do so by making the change on the template, and then it will automatically update all pages made based on that template.
Once you are done setting up the templates - go to your new page and choose Modify - Templates - Apply Template To Page
Select the template you just created (note it will be placed inside of a new folder titled "templates" automatically by Dreamweaver).
Now, any of the areas you selected to add different content into will be selectable, and you can copy/paste or however you are doing so.
    Good luck

  • Can I host a website on my BT Infinity connection

    Hi,
I was wondering if it was against the T&Cs to host a website on my unused Home PC using the HH5 and Bt Infinity?

No its not against the T&Cs, but you have to remember that your public IP address is dynamic, and you will have to use a DDNS service like DynDNS to keep your hostname updated with your IP address.
I run a webserver on an ADSL connection, as shown in my signature below, and here
BT Broadband customers - help with broadband, WiFi, networking, e-mail and phones.
Your website must not be of a commercial nature, as that would be against the BT Residential Broadband T&Cs.
You also need to be aware of any security vulnerabilities that you may introduce to your network. If you can keep things simple, and avoid scripting and ASP/PHP, that will help a lot, as most attacks are against these services, if not fully secured.
There are some useful help pages here, for BT Broadband customers only, on my personal website.
