The best overall laptop

Alright tech guys I have a challenge. I am currently searching for the best overall laptop to purchase. I am looking for a combination of processor power, economy and features. I have about 1,100 dollars to spend, so I am looking for the best laptop for that price. I will admit, I do want an i7 processor (or equivalent) and at least a 650 GB hard drive. Any suggestions? I am not biased towards any single company or product, so I can be swayed any direction. Thanks so much for your guidance!
About me: Avid gamer, college student, and I do like to work with Adobe AfterEffects so I need a powerful computer!

I will just toss out ASUS as the brand that I recommend without hesitation 99% of the time. One of the guys who are more intune with current models may have a better suggestion for you, but they currently make the best PC laptops on the market.

  • The best Mac laptop to use Final Cut Pro 4???

I don't know much about Macs and I know even less about Mac laptops! Someone told me that the macbook (Intel based??) would be the best mac laptop to use with Final Cut Pro 4. Could someone tell me if this IS my best option or if I should be looking for a powerbook? What specs do I need to be looking for? I know that I need a G4 or higher, but the memory, speed, etc... I'm clueless about...

Get a MacBookPro 17" and upgrade to FCP5.1
You need the 17" to get the firewire 800 port - necessary if you want to edit anything more than DV or HDV.
The upgrade from FCP4 to FCP5.1 is very inexpensive now (offer expires in mid December) and you would be very foolish to not do it.
    good luck.

  • What is the best PC laptop to use with Premiere Pro 2014?

I'm excited that I get to buy a NEW LAPTOP!!!
I'm editing a documentary with tons of footage.  I'll use external SSD drive for files.
What is the best PC laptop to get for editing movies on Premiere Pro 2014?
I can spend up to $1500
Thanks SO MUCH for your help!!!!

premiere will run fine with the 7200rpm hdd. while editing, if your hdd/ssd isn't fast enough it will stutter and skip as it cant feed the data fast enough to premiere. thats with high bitrate footage, if you are using low bitrate footage the 7200rpm might work ok to hold your footage too. odds are that external samsung ssd will be fast enough to hold the media, project cache and any preview files. you shouldn't need another external hdd for export/render.
the ssd for internal will let windows boot faster and let programs open and close faster. once windows is loaded and programs are opened, they load into ram. there is little to be gained after that for ssd/hdd speeds while using most programs.

  • What's the best Mac laptop to run pro tools 10 on?

I use a Mac desktop at work and wanted to get a laptop to do extra audio production on using Protools 10..
Which Mac laptop would be the best to go for..

The 15-inch MacBook Pro is the best computer. It has got a quad-core processor, it supports 16 GB of memory that you can install yourself without voiding warranty, two graphic cards, etc.
You can also have a look at the 13-inch MacBook Pro or the MacBook Air, but they probably won't give you the performance you really want

  • What's the best overall solution for managing books and eBooks?

I have a lot of eBooks (in .mobi and PDF format). I'd like to find a solution (software/system/scheme) such that
    1) The actual content syncs to several devices (Mac, iPad, iPhone) and can be read even when network is not present.
    2) There is a searchable, convenient database of what books are there.
    3) The database can be added to by barcode scanning the ISBN tag
    4) Some entries in the database are linked to full content. That is, I'd enter books that I have in electronic format, but also books from my library that exist only in paper form.
I'm looking for a total solution to manage all my books - list them all, plus enable ready access to the content for the ones I have. I'd like to have it sync to several devices. What's the best system - anyone have it set up like this? What's the best reader, database app, and way to hang it all together (with iTunes?). Thanks in advance,
    Mike

I am currently using WD 2TB Thunderbolt hard drive for my iTunes, which i love and is works great.  i am connected directly to my Mac Book Pro. I am running low on Memory and thinking of buying a bigger Hard drive.  My question is should I buy 6TB thunderbolt HD or 6TB NAS drive to work solely for iTunes.  I have home sharing enabled for my Apple TV
I also have my time capsule connected just as back up only.

I am looking around and comparing gaming PCs and laptops.  I am strongly leaning toward a laptop because I already have a fairly nice PC, but it really isn't built for gaming.  Any advice or suggestions are appreciated.  I like:

  • What is the best model laptop that 9.2.2 can start up on?

I'm looking to buy an old laptop that starts up Classic 9.2.2 like the iMac G3 does and can also run a version of OS X (at least 10.3.9). Would those be Powerbooks or iBooks or both? What is the fastest model I should look for?

Click here. All of the iBooks which fit those criteria are G3s.

  • Lenovo G565 still rockin' ... One of the best budget laptops ever imo!!

Windows 8 Pro 64-bit runs perfect, no problems anywhere whatsoever...  Using start8... I'm not a fan of the new ModernUI... I prefer Android on my Tablet and the good old mouse / keyboard combo when working on my computer.  Planning to keep this laptop at least one more year..
Anyway... There's just one thing that bothers me, if something happens, like a HD crash or whatever there's no way to restore and install old windows 7 again now when I've updated to Win8 Pro right???. A few months since I upgraded the os but I've thought about asking this question a few times...
    Thanks

No restocking fee? That's good to hear. Because I've read from another site that someone bought a Lenovo laptop (different model I think) with the same clicking, gurgling, static sounds issue and had to exchange it for another one (same brand and model laptop). Unfortunately, the replacement laptop had the same issue (same static noise) and when he brought it back he was charged a restocking fee and he also ended up buying a different brand laptop. And I would really like to have this same brand and model laptop if I were to give up on this one but am scared that the same situation would happen to me too. Is that the case?
I'm going to give this one a few more days hoping it would miraculously fix itself or the noise would somehow make itself disappear. It's still making little clicking noises as I type on it though. I would be somehow disappointedt if I ended up with a different brand laptop though as this has really grown on me.

  • The Best specs laptop for a mainstage setup

Hi guys! It's my first time here and I'm planning to buy a new Mac book pro, (which i want to replace my core 2 mbp mid 2010)
    Is it ok to get ;
    2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
    Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz
    4GB 1600MHz memory
    500GB 5400-rpm hard drive1
    Intel HD Graphics 4000
    or the Retina;
    2.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
    Turbo Boost up to 2.9GHz
    4GB 1600MHz memory
    128GB PCIe-based flash storage1
    Intel Iris Graphics
Are these intel dual core's is enough for mainstage?
Can i maximize the ram up to 16gb?
5400rpm is it enough speed for a hard drive?
Its also my first time using mainstage, i will be shifting from hardware to mainstage. Maybe you guys also can give me some tips?
I will be using massive(NI) and alicia keys. Maybe i will be putting more samples also, i will be using also a lot of exs24 for my samples also.
And also im on a tight budget.
    Thanks in advance!

SURPRISED to hear that Logic Remote is for Mainstage, and now I'm wondering whether I should get an iPad now or not. LOL!
well.. it is, but it's not goning to have the flexibility you probaby want.  it's fairly preset in it's layout as far as i can tell.  anyone here used it?
MidiDesigner or TouchOSC are totally customizable.  it's kind of weird, but you create a virtual control to control the virtual controls in MS to control the channels and plug-ins.
loading up Concerts takes time, and so does switching BETWEEN concerts, as MS must load and analyze all samples/plug ins.
In my opinion, you are CORRECT that all of your songs should be loaded into one Concert, as mine are.
you know, i was so frustrated trying to be able to call up various presets in UltraBeat by control map and could figure out why i couldn't access them in the map.  then i realized that doing so also causes a sample load which is time consuming. the way MS works, it seems to me, is that you DO load everythign up all at once and so there is no lag. if i like say 4 different UB presets then i don't have one channel of UB from which to load them up, but 4 channels so they are always loaded.  this requires maybe a buss so that you can control the volume of all of them regarding effects and volume, etc.  however, what would be nice is to be able to group them so that when you switch from one the others start..  i guess you could put them all on different MIDI notes/same channel.  so say UB1 is C-1 to B0 and UB2 is C0-B1 and have all Toggle on 1 so they  would maybe do that..  hmmm.
whereas MS does want you to change Patches, i like to hang out in the same Patch and have everythign available at all times.  i really need to get a video up of my stuff liek you have.
If you're interested, have a look at my setup here:
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdbF4_AmaXM
these are great!  i can see whe have a lot in common in how we think about MS.  most people usign it are live players of GTR and Keys, but i'm in a cross between DJ and player.  MS sits somewhere between Live and Max/Msp it seems to me.  someone is sellign an APC40 and i was thinking about it.. hmmm.  see what you're doing is super cool.  especially if you use video.
i wish there was a group for us who are sitting on MS between Live and Max.  know of any?

  • What's the best way to save a .pdf with comments?

I really like the comment features in Acrobat X, but I'm a little stuck on what "Save As" function is the best for .pdfs. For example, I also use the GoodReader App quite a bit on my phone, and I've noticed that they have an option to "flatten" the markups on a file. When exporting the markings will open up just fine in any .pdf reader. I really like that system, but most of the time I need to use my laptop for the keyboard.
With Acrobat X some markups are consistent (mainly the drawing ones), but the annotation ones are not as easy to figure out.
So, what do you guys recommend for which format is best for saving. Essentially, I plan to grade student essays with markup and then e-mail the files back (or, if it is not too time consuming, upload them in GoogleDocs and then share the link). Either way, I'm looking for the best overall way to do it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I use stamps and text boxes most often. Occasionally I use the text-editing tools in the comments area, but they really don't save well when I flatten the file. Occasionally, I'll add a file to pdf when I need to extensively comment on a certain area of the pdf. Depending upon the comment I'll either use a text file (my preferred choice), an rtf, or pdf.

  • Best Mac Laptop for X Code Development

    Hi,
I'm trying to make some ios Apps from the X Code. So what is the best Mac Laptop to use this for..
I'm expecting your kind response from yours.
    Thank you,
    Iranga.

    Anyone should do the job.
However, when writing software, the larger the screen the better, as often times you have multiple windows open for different aspects of your development project (code, debugging, simulator, documentation, UI builder, etc...).
Of course if most of your development time will be done at a desk were you can setup an external monitor (an inexpensive 24" 1080p), then again any laptop would do.  The asumetion being that you want the portability of the laptop so you can travel or surf the web while relaxing in a comfy chair (not actually working on your code).
Whatever you get, just get lots of RAM and sufficient disk space for your needs.  Also make sure you have regular backups, as loosing a coding project is extremely painful, and the code you write to replace it never seems to live up to what you lost (first hand experience talking here).  Also using a source code control system is useful.  Checkin your changes on a regular basis, as sometimes coding changes do not work out the way you expected, and being able to go back to an older version is extremely helpful (also first hand experience).

  • I'm looking for the best Mic in

I'm setting up an office-to-office videoconferencing system. I've got the video down, but I'm looking for the best audio I can get. The sound will be stereo output, but I need really good microphone input. Echo cancelling is a must, but the Windows XP echo cancellation sounds like a bad telephone connection. Does anyone have any ideas? Are any of the mic inputs better on one SoundBlaster than on the others?

  • Getting the best possible output video quality in Premiere 8.0

    Here is my PC information:
    Windows 7 64 bit
Intel Quad Core Q6600 @2.40 Ghz
    4.0 GB of Ram
    My Camera information:
    Kodak Playsport HD
Records videos in HD 720P @ 60 FPS
Saves movies in .MOV format, 1280 x 720 resolution, and H.264 codec
Now I am playing around with the settings but when I edit movies in Premiere Elements and then save it I always lose a lot of quality. I'm not really interested in sharing the videos on the web, I'm just looking for the best possible quality (as close to how it looks in its original form) for viewing on my home computer. Can anybody help me out with decent export settings that will give me the best overall quality?

Hello Bill and thank you for your respone, I appreciate it. I've managed to get the overall quality of the movie a lot better with using different presets at new project. I am now using the preset NTSC-HDV-HDV720p 30 and that seems to be working a lot better. I also save the final movies as a Quicktime file, with a Local Area Network (LAN) and then I go to advanced and bring up the quality to 100, change it to 1280x720, bring the frame rate up to 60, and set the bitrate at 8000.
I am now having a different problem however. It seems that when I add a music to the background the song messes up frequently. What I mean is that when I'm watching the movie I created the video will be playing normally and then at random times the song will skip or get choppy. Then on top of that, with certain transitions between scenes the transition won't even work, it will just freeze for a bit and then skip to the next scene (On a side note, I leave the "Field Type" as "Progressive" and the "Aspect" as "Square Pixels [1.0] simply because I'm not sure what those are for).
I just uploaded this practice video to youtube, if you want to check it out it's at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVorCPASaGM
Keep in mind I just threw together a couple random pictures and clips just to practice haha. You will be able to notice that the song and video get slightly choppy for some reason.
    Thanks in advance!

It did 5310 mind you, but that was a suicide run  .  I can run it at around 4,6 - 4,7 at the max recommended 1,4V, but to maintain all the power saving features, 4,5 is the limit for mine.
I also read on the forum that 1.9 PLL voltage was maximum, so need to remember that as well.
I'll keep you informed as soon as parts come in and system had been build, thanks for your time and info.
