The best webcam for the Mac Pro?

I have a 23 inch desktop and frankly, I'm upset at the iSight not being made anymore and the people making serious bank off it on ebay and amazon. I tried the agent webcam by liquid digital which is a company in australia, http://agent.liquiddigital.com.au/index.htm
The problem? Too expensive and the video did poor in well lit situations. It also looked grainy. I want a webcam that will look as good if not better than the ones on the Laptops and iMacs. It looks razor sharp at The Apple events when used for iChat demos. I want the same thing at home.

Do you happen to have a Firewire Camcorder ?
Also see the bottom this page http://homepage.mac.com/john_kenn/video.html
Although written at the time of Jaguar (iChat 2 demo) it does list some Firewire web Cams you may find in some corners of the market.
Fire-I still brings up a link
What was the iRez Kritter now leads you here with all sorts of prices. (They tend to specialise in Medical Cameras now)
After that it is looking at USB cameras
Ones that are listed as USB 2.0 and therefore more likely to be UVC compliant are the next best bet (UVC is USB Video Class which is now got a driver in the Mac OS since 10.4.9)
This chap has done some comparisons http://www.speedycam.be/webcams.html
The X-Box 360 cam has a focus ring and works on computers that have 10.4.9 and above and USB 2.0 ports (it is UVC compliant).

  • Best webcam for a Mac Pro?

I'm not sure how much luck I will have, but here goes.
I have an old mid-2008 Mac Pro, I've been wanting to get a webcam for it for some time now, can anyone suggest one? — I doubt one of the cheap $20 webcams I can buy at the supermarket will even work with my Mac.
I've known Logitech to make Mac compatible webcams in the past, but I can't find any any locally.
Can anyone suggest something that's been tested to work with Mac? Thanks.

Thanks for the detailed response EZ Jim,
Yes, turns out after I posted this, I was reading through the Logitech Support pages, and found a similar answer in that no drivers should be required since Mac OS X has UVC drivers included as of 10.4.8 onward (great idea on Apple's part!) — with that information I decided to take a chance, and purchased a Logitech c270 for about $50AU.
So far I've tested it with a number of applications, I figured I'd try Photo Booth first, it works well.
I then tried to set up iChat with my iCloud account, couldn't seem to get that to work, so I called Apple Support, who helped me find the FaceTime app for Snow Leopard, got my iCloud account connected and was able to make a successful call to a family member. (I found the picture quality very nice for a small 720p camera.)
I also figured that since the webcam has a microphone built in, I'd also try using it for audio recording, it worked, which is handy meaning I won't have to connect an external microphone through the line-in.
I've still got a few uses I want to test it with such as Yahoo Messenger and Skype, but I'm confident that given my success so far it will work just fine. :)

  • Best Router for a Mac Pro with Leopard

Can anyone suggest a good router to purchase that would work with no problems for a Mac Pro with Leopard?
I would be connecting to the router via an ethernet cable, but I'm looking specifically for a g and b router, because my roommate has a Dell and she uses a wireless usb adapter to connect wirelessly. We have a modem (cable or DSL, I think?) and high-speed internet service.
I've heard that some routers are having problems with leopard and macs in general, so I wanted to be sure I'd be getting a good one before I go out and spend a hundred bucks or more.

    a linksys wrt150n i got mine for about $99 to 129
    and its pretty good
Since the cd comes with pc only software follow these instructions
1 hook up the router to the modem
    2 connect to the router
if you want to add a password continue the steps
3 you may have to plug in the router to your mac if not skip this
4 go to http://192.168.1.1 using the password admin
5 now your in the routers menu
6 change the network name if you want to
to add a password go to wireless once you click on it under you will see wireless security select your setting oh by the way passphrase is a name for password if you didint know.
sorry if that was a mouthful if you still dont understand
    email me at [email protected]
it works great with my imac my dell inspron and even my ipod touch

  • Webcams for a Mac Pro?

I'm looking at getting a decent webcam for use with iChat and Skype so I can see my girlfriend in the States! The one that caught my eye was Logitech's UltraVision (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2204,CONTENTID=118 04) but was wondering if anyone knew if this would work with an intel Mac Pro? It says it only works with Vista, but some resellers are saying it is Mac-intel compatible...
    Many thanks,
    Ben

    +heck no!+
OK… it was just a question as many of us also have Boot Camp/Parallels. I wasn't offering your rabies on a stick or anything… then again, maybe I was.
So, the best option is to get your hands on a pre-loved iSight. I'm surprised there are more of them. As people upgrade their Macs sure there are iSights that are up from grabs. I got 2 more of them from my parents when they went with Intel iMacs from their G4 versions.

  • "Best" configuration for new Mac Pro used for Aperture?

I'm getting ready to order a new Mac Pro and would like to configure it to optimize Aperture performance.
On CPUs - I have found no benchmarks which show whether Aperture would benefit from 2 quad core processors versus 1. Does anyone know of any benchmarks or have any experience using a single quad core? I don't want to spend $500 on a 2nd processor if Aperture can't use it.
On Graphics cards - I was sold on the GForce 8800, due to it's supposed blazing speed for gaming and it's larger on board memory. However, after reading the following review http://www.barefeats.com/harper10.html , these guys seem to imply that applications such as Aperture actually run faster with the standard Radeon 2600 video card! If anyone has any experience or opinions on this review, I'd love to hear them!
On memory - I know from experience that Aperture will use all of the physical memory you make available to it. I plan on ordering the standard 2GB from Apple, then adding 8GB from 3rd party for total of 10MB.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can only say that when faced with the same decision last month, I went with a 2.8 8-core/8800GT/10gb RAM/library stored on 2nd internal drive setup and am completely satisfied with Aperture's speed. Beyond satisfied, really, borderline thrilled to be honest. No beach balls, perfectly responsive adjustment sliders, smooth and quick scrolling through images (even with Quick Preview mode turned off). Aperture 2 definitely takes advantage of all 8 cores - I have MenuMeters installed and can watch its CPU usage across all 8 cores. Exporting, for example, is fast and uses all cores for background processing.
I have seen a couple small anomalies though...when moving photos around in a light table, I get some odd flashing artifacts on the right side of screen that could be graphics card related. Visually annoying but it doesn't affect performance. I'm also seeing some weird behavior with keywords not appearing in Tooltips and in the Viewer, but it's intermittent and is most likely a software bug and not my hardware setup.

  • Best option for wireless Mac Pro early 2009

I didn't but the airport card when I bought my Pro, but find myself needing a wireless connection.
    What is the best option?
I see many USB adapters cheap, but have heard that reliability has been an issue with many of them.
I've heard of issues with 10.6.x (and I need 64bit too) with some PCI adapters.
Should I try to find one of the airport express cards that shipped with it as a BTO option? I have the skill to dismantle the computer to install it myself.
I'd like to go the cheapest route, but don't want to chase down drive or other issues repeatedly; I've gone through that mess with "bargain" routers before.
I'd need it to work with boot camp too.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Obviously you can find your way around inside one of these things, so yeah -- you're probably better off just shopping for the best deal online.
I think you have to be careful about the connection wires -- they're referred to here, in step 5

  • RAID setup for a Mac Pro

I'm trying to figure out what would be the best configuration for my Mac Pro tower as far as storage and backup is concerned. I want a RAID drive with hot swappable slots but I'm not sure what the best solution is. Apple's SAN and xServe seem far too sophisticated for my needs (not to mention pricey). I bought a Norco DS-500B eSATA RAID storage array but the RAID controller card is a PCI-X and incompatible with my machine (although the documentation says it's totally compatible...weird). And so in my investigation as to what card to get to replace the one provided, I couldn't find any reviews on this product, save one which said that the array is very bad and will destroy all your hard drives. Sooo...I'm returning the array in search of a new one, but again my investigation has turned up very little. Am I the only one? Or am I out of touch with the real solution?

What's missing in your post is two of the most important elements.
How much storage do you need?
There is a myriad of options if you want 2-5TB of space. Not so many if you want 2-5 petabytes of space
How much are you prepared to spend?
You have many, many options at $100,000, but no so many at $100
The other thing to consider is that by and large, price reflects quality - either in reliability or performance (or both).
If your budget is, say, $2000 you have to decide whether you're better off buying a budget 5TB system or a pro 2TB system - the latter system clearly has less capacity but may offer higher performance and/or reliability. Any RAID system is only as good as all the parts, and the physical drives are only a small element there. The controller, internal electronics, cabling and even interface can have just as much impact on a reliable RAID system (almost any RAID system can recover from a failed disk, but a burned-out controller is harder to recover from).

  • Could someone please let me know the best external hard drive for a Mac Pro 17 in. ? Thank you .

    Hi,
I am new to the community and need advice as soon as possible . I have been using the iMac hard drive , but need a external hard drive to put on the Mac Pro and dont know what kind to get . Could someone please let me know the best for the Mac Pro ? I was told to get the 500 MB external back up , but when searching for it on the internet I saw different ones that had other things with the 500 MB . Some had 300 or 200 something else along with them and I dont know which to purchase .
I will appreciate more than you know if you could help me with this , as the Pro is needing backed up now.
    Thank you ,

I appreciate all the great advice here , but all this is overwhelming to me , as you all are so intelligent with these things and this causes me to feel more dumb about a Mac than I was already .
I paid for a One on One to learn these things , but I have a Immune Disorder and wasn't able to attend one class , so its not that I didn't try , I am just not able to travel . I don't like asking others for help , but at this point I don't have a choice.
I called Apple store and was told to get a External Back-up for the Macbook Pro to back up the info. on the device in the event it crashed . And another reason was "they " said to get this was I have a 2 TB backup on the iMac desktop and that using it to back up things on the Macbook would take up all the space of the backup on the desktop . I hope I am saying these things right for others to understand me as I said I don't know much about these things , at all really . I am wondering if I should have ever bought these products as it seems they are much harder to learn than I thought . I do admire all the brains you all have here and wish I knew just a little of what you all know.
Someone ask the kind of Macbook Pro I have , it was bought in August of 2011 , but sat all those times , was only updated when needed to be , as I was trying to learn on the desktop Mac and with this illness I live in bed more than up , so I couldn't learn on both devices . I should also say at this time I paid for an extra 3 yrs. to have the opportunity to call in for advice , but was only given 15 min. of talk time , and I can't complain as the Techs were very supportive , but the problem was and is I can't be out of bed long enough to learn things I need to with only getting to call Techs , maybe every 3 or so months and sometimes I didn't call for 5 or so months , now that has expired and I don't have a choice but to ask for help .
I know some might wonder why I went to the trouble to have these devices with being sick , but I would like to live some with what time I have left in life . I am not searching for pity here , just wanting to clarify what has happened and why I am having to bother others . With this out of the way now I can get onto the other things here.
I am afraid I might have messed up the backup on the Macbook Pro was trying to make a back up and clicked on something saying do not use this , meaning the device from the desktop again . I had connected the backup device from the desktop , trying to make a backup of things on the Macbook Pro and also cant get the Time Machine turned back on , once I turned it off .
I am sorry I have taken so much time to try and explain this to you all , but I am not computer savvy as you are and have had a hard time explaining all this .
I noticed also someone said this isn't the right forum for this , and would like for someone to point me to the right one if you don't mind.
I appreciate all the good advice here and all the trouble you all went to for me .
Thank you , thank you all .

  • What is the best blue-ray drive for my Mac Pro????

What is the best blue-ray drive for my Mac Pro????
I wanted a BWU-200S but it says windows only i called apple
and all they could tell me was logitech....wouldn't tell me a model
    or anything.
I would really like one that does all the formats and feature that the
    Sony BWU-200S does.
I read that the BWU-200S might work in the mac pro it just only comes with
windows software. If anyone has tried this let me know please i need this soon.

This site makes Mac compatible Blueray drives:
    http://store.fastmac.com/index.php?cPath=10252
The questions to ask them is:
    1. Which applications can be used to burn bluray movies from it?
    2. Which applications can be used to playback commercial bluray from it?
    3. Does it let you burn DVDs from iDVD, iTunes and the Finder as well as CDs and CD-RWs?
    4. Does it support both DVD-R DL and DVD+R DL for burning and playback?
    5. Does it allow for booting from the system installer that shipped with the machine and running the hardware test that shipped with the machine?
    6. Do you get to keep the original optical drive in case you want to troubleshoot if system issues are due to their drive?
Some of these may already be on the website, I just haven't taken the time to look it completely over.

  • What's the best SSD for a Macbook Pro 13" Mid 2010?

    Hello.
I will upgrade my 2010 Macbook Pro. I need to know what's the best SSD for my Macbook Pro. I was thinking about those:
    - Kingston SSDNow V+200 (SVP200S37A/120G) - 120 GB
    - CRUCIAL SSD M4 128 GB
    - CORSAIR SSD  Force Series GS 128 GB
    - SAMSUNG SSD 840 Series Basic 2.5" - 120 GB (MZ-7TD120BW)
    - CRUCIAL SSD interno Crucial v4 - 128 GB
Those are the easiest to find on Portugal.

It is my understanding that SATA III is backwards compatible to SATA II so that should not be an issue for your selection process.
As an aside, you might be interested to know that your MBP can now have 16 GB RAM installed.

WiFi signals get stronger the closer the machine is to the router and the less interference/blocking of the signal like via walls with metal in them or of thick concrete.
Since the signal emanates outwards in a sphere, your supposed to place the wireless router in a central location in the building so it covers all areas.
The power of the router also has a affect, if your router is old or something not that powerful like a Airport Express, it doesn't have the ability to filter out other signals or enough punch to get through walls etc. or cover a large area as effectively.
If you buy/have a powerful router of newer make and have issues where there is metal in the walls or thick concrete, then you can buy something like OpenMesh and by using Ethernet cables from the back of the router, extend the WiFi signal into other rooms and areas past the blockage.

  • I have a belkin 7 adapter for additional USB slots for my Mac Pro. It was working well till just recently I am getting a message that says the usb port on the Mac Pro is shutting down due to a very high power drain. Then it shuts the usb port down.

I have a belkin 7 adapter for additional usb ports for my mac pro. It worked fine without problems till recently when the message regarding usb port drawing too much power and the computer shuts the port on the mac pro down. The strip comes with its own power supply adapter. The attachments are additional hard drives used as backups and independent data. Other than disconnecting it are there any fixes?

You're getting the message because you're exceeding the available current, probably as a result of bus-powered drives. The power sources for hubs are rather small. Try using drives with their own power supplies.

  • Where can I obtain the AHT on disk for my Mac Pro 4.1?

Where can I obtain a disk (iso) of the AHT for my Mac Pro 4.1 (latest OS X Yosemite) that I am busy upgrading?

If you can fiddle with file permissions without going nuts, the original gray discs or the downloads mentioned (once the .dmg is mounted) provide a roughly 60 to 100 MByte .diagnostics [invisible] directory at:
    /Volumes/disc_name/System/Library/CoreServices/.diagnostics
You can see this folder (on the DVD or in the download) with the Finder by looking in CoreServices, using the Find command and specifying name .diagnostics and Visibility [invisible].
Open a second Finder window and navigate to the comparable place in the current Directory structure:
    /System/Library/CoreServices
drag and drop the .diagnostics directory from the DVD or the download in one window to the current Core Services folder in the other window. Observe carefully to see that it actually does the copy, as Find-ing it in the current directory structure is quirky.
You may have to authenticate as Admin, or you may already have access --
-- otherwise you can change the permissions of the current CoreServices folder to allow you to Read & Write
-- don't forget to change permissions back if you modified them.
NOW try Restart and hold the D key.

please help me ,i forgot the synchronising password for my mac pro lion backup disk

If the backup volume is encrypted, and you forgot the password, then you'll have to erase the volume and start a new backup. There's no way to recover the password.
