The Cardinal Sin!  Finder and IPhoto

I am really new to Macs and IPhoto and from reading a few of the discussions it looks I have committed the cardinal sin. I rearranged most of my photos in Finder as I found that the date sorting was really unhelpful espcially if I was using hotmail or yahoo to email my photos. Now when I open IPhoto the majority (but not all) of the photos are just grey boxes. The info is still there in the box on the bottom left in IPhoto but all the ones that I cropped and altered etc don't seem to show up in Finder at all. Have I lost these completely? Will I be able to see the photos again in IPhoto?

don't worry DaisyGirl,
We'll get you back up an running.

About the iPhoto Library folder
Close iPhoto
Rename your messed up iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and highlight it in the window, then click the "open" button.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.
Good luck!
Oh, for what you want t do...
iPhoto 5 now stores the Album information in a data xml file. There are some third party applications that can read the xml file and can navigate the iPhoto library and show you the Albums. Hopefully more applications will be revised to read this file.
Until then you will have to Share/Export the photos to the desktop. You can then navigate to the desktop to use the photos (example: web uploading from online photo site)
If your application supports drag and drop, you can drag the photo from an open iPhoto Library window into your application.
For email you can also use the email icon within iPhoto to open a message with the highlighted photo attached.
You can also use spotlight to find images in an Album...
This is what I have done using Spotlight to find my images that are in iPhoto albums without opening iPhoto..
In iPhoto, select the album, then select all, go to Photos/batch change.
Change the comments to text. In the text field I put the name of the Album.
Do this for each album.
Close iPhoto.
Open Spotlight and put in the name of the Album ( you have to remember the names of the albums or have then written down)
In the spotlight search results. click on "show all"
Under "Images" click on the "xx more" to show all the images in the album.
Make sure you have it in icon view, the icon view box is the last one on the blue images line.
Now you can control click on the image to "reveal in finder", open in iPhoto or Mail, etc.
I am not sure if this is going to make you happy and it is a little more work, but you can find images in albums and even view them in a slideshow (by clicking the play arrow at the end of the Images highlighted blue line) using Spotlight, all without opening iPhoto.
One important thing to know is you can set up a graphic program to be an external editor (when you double click an image in the library} such as PhotoShop or PS Elements. You set up that within iPhoto Preferences. Just make sure you save the image flattened and with the same name. The edits will then be relected in iPhoto when you hit "save".

No.  When you removed the photos via the finder you damage the library.  Photos should always be removed from the library using iPhoto, never with the Finder.
If you have a Time Machine backup of the library from before you deleted the photos you can restore the library to the Desktop and export that album from it to import into your current library.
It's been too long to be able to try one of the file recovery applications.  You sure to have overwritten those files with new files since them.

I burnt CDs thru Finder and IPhoto. Each time the titles failed to transfer. Why?

Where are you looking for the Titles? You're not confusing titles - which are an entry in the Exif metadata of the file - with Filename?

  • Lightroom will not import my photos.   It did up to a week ago.   I have changed cards and cameras (both worked two weeks ago).   I can import the photos to Picasa and iPhoto

Lightroom will not import my photos.   It did up to a week ago.   I have changed cards and cameras (both worked two weeks ago).   I can import the photos to Picasa and iPhoto.   I get the following error message:
Some import operations were not performed.
The following files were not imported because they could not be read  [followed by a list of the files I wanted to import]
Thumbnails show up.  LR just will not import them.
Any idea what is going wrong?

If the Import button is not clickable, that means that Lightroom thinks you have no new photos to import (one possible reason is that they are duplicates)
So, you need to figure out why Lightroom thinks that. The way I would do this is to search your Library module for at least one of the photos, by file name. To do this, you would follow all 4 of these steps in sequence:
Click on All Photographs in the Catalog Panel on the left of the Library Module
Turn off all Filters (Ctrl-L or Cmd-L once or twice)
Expand all stacks: Photo->Stacking->Expand All Stacks
Search for one or more of the photos using the Filter Bar (press backslash), search by File Name

(IOS 7 update trouble) My music app icon is missing from my home screen and I have to go through the search to find and use it. How do I get the icon back on my home screen

Find which screen, folder it was moved to, and hold down the icon until the icons start shaking. Then drag it to the left or right edge of the screen, and it will allow you to move it to which ever screen you want it. When you have it there, tap the Home button to stop the icons form shaking.
Or do what hannahsage said above.

  • Question about photos in Finder and iPhoto

I just bought this macbook pro so I transferred all my photos to Finder, then I added all of them to iPhoto from the Finder. So are the photos now duplicated on my mac? (one in Finder and one in iPhoto)
    Thanks

    Probably.
That would happen by default - i.e. Unless you changed a setting in the iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced.
Simple test: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder Window will open with the file selected. In the Finder's column view you can track the location of the file.

  • Problem between Finder and iPhoto

Why are the folders and albums not the same in the Finder window and iPhoto. When browsing to add a photo (such as in eBay) the finder window opens and the photo I want is not there but is in iPhoto. Am I doing something wrong?

When browsing to add a photo (such as in eBay) the finder window opens and the photo I want is not there but is in iPhoto. Am I doing something wrong?
Yes - do not go into the iPhoto library using the finder or other programs because iPhoto is a database and there is no reason for you to be going into it - adding photos to web sites is done using the media browser in the lower lefthand corner of the open/attach window

  • I have tried to add a NEW GMAIL Account into Thunderbird and after i use the automatic configuration finder and Password confirmation, it does not display

I tried to set up a NEW Gmail account in Thunderbird But it will not display eventhough it confirms that the configuration is correct and that the password is Valid. Please NOTE that i previously was able to set up the email account correctly in Thunderbird but was encountering some errors and i therefore deleted it using the Account Actions menu.
I have repeated this action probably probably 5 or 6 times and I still cannot see the new email account in Thunderbird. I can only see my other Gmail Account
Would appreciate someone sharing with me a step by step answer to help me fix this problem as I have no clue

Sounds like the Google Less Secure Application situation. Go to gmail and read what they have to say about this.
FYI: Deleting and reinstalling accounts or Thunderbird software is not the best way to solve problems. It usually never solves a thing and can cause more issues as you are seeing. It is best to troubleshoot what you have and fix those issues.

  • I've committed the cardinal sin... apparently...

So, I've moved and renamed my pictures from my hardrive... And I was told yesterday that that was a big no no. Now, iPhoto can't find my pictures and I can edit them or do anything other than look at them. I called apple, and basically they told me that I had to pay fifty dollars or two hundred and fifty to get the answer... So I'm hoping that I won't have to do either and can find someone to help me here. Can anyone tell me how to have my computer put everything in the right folders again? apple was kind enough to tell me that there IS a way to do it, just not how. If anyone can step me through this, I would greatly greatly greatly appreciate it.!!

How much did you mess it up? You can put the pictures back into the correct folders as long as you know where they should be..
In your iPhoto Library folder, there should be Originals and Data folders.
These two will be where your files should be. The difference is that the Originals folder contains the files as they were when imported-in their original format and size. The Data folder contains thumbnails for each image in .jpg. Both of them are organized by RollYear/RollName. If you sort and view by FilmRolls in iPhoto, you can use the program as a guide for figuring where each file should be.
If you've edited any pictures, there would also be a copy under the Modified folder, filed under the same RollYear/RollName structure as the Data and Originals folders.
In order to have iPhoto work correctly, the organization must match exactly what it was before you changed it.
If this seems too much work, you are better off re-importing everything and starting over fresh.

  • EXIF info in Finder and iPhoto different

When I import pictures from my Canon Powershot Pro1, iPhoto has the correct exif info, but any other program, either finder or another program called "Name those files", uses faulty exif information, namely that the creation date of the file is the import date. I like to rename my files, including the original date it was taken, and I am not able to because of this glitch, although maybe I should rename in iPhoto. I don't know.

    mevannorden:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. There's a contextual menu application, PhotoToolCM 2.0, that will batch rename the files to the EXIF date -0 YYYY-MM-DD-01.jpg. You can use it before importing into iPhoto. You can also use another renaming application, like R-Name to append the additional information to the file name. You will end up with a file name like this: YYYY-MM-DD-01-your info here.jpg
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Cannot get disc out of disc drive - Mac Book Pro - not showing the disc on finder and eject button is not working

I inserted a disc into the disc drive but it did not start up.  It is not showing in Finder.  When I press the eject key nothing happens.  Can someone tell me how to get the disc out of the disc drive?

    Try the tips here:
Get help with the slot-loading SuperDrive on your Mac computer - Apple Support
Especially holding the trackpad mouse button upon restart and resetting the SMC.
If it's stuck in there you might have to make a "guide" out of two thin pieces of plastic. Post back if that's the case.

  • Every time the laptop boots, Finder and Open Office opens. How do I stop this?

I downloaded Open Office on my Macbook Pro. Every time the laptop boots up, Open Office and Finder both load and I have to close them. D disk drive icon for Open Office remains on the deshtop. I have an icon for Open Office in Launchpad and I had one on the dock as well, bit I removed it. Is there a boot folder somewhere? If so.. Where do I find it? I am running Mountain Lion.

The Finder will always open when you boot... it's what supplies the basic Desktop, folders, etc. The 'face' of OS X. As to why OpenOffice is launching on startup, check System Preferences>Users & Groups and check you Log-in items under your user name. If you don't see OpenOffice there, make sure that you do not have "Reopen windows when logging back in" selected when you shutdown or restart.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
