The Case of the Disappearing Clones

Ok, here's a new one for me.
I was cloning a cloud edge, and examining my work. The History palette was blocking my view, so I moved it. Instead, it jumped to the palette bar. Brought it back and tried to move it again. Same thing. Huh? I opened it for the third time, carefully clicked on the top of the History  and this time it moved off the edge of the image. But look! The clones have disappeared from the image, but they are still present in the palette! I ran back and forth up History and nothing. There they are in History, there they aren't on the image. Not a big deal, redo the clones. Looks better than before anyway, but still, where are the first ones?
(Yeah, I know. Dual monitors and all that. But consider if I have dual monitors, this puzzle never would have appeared! Or would they?)
Win7 64, CS5 with all the patches.
Oh, and Happy New Year.

Thanks for getting back Noel. With a name like yours, tis the season!
Last first. Nothing wrong with dual monitors except for my cramped desk space. I probably will change that as soon as any of my potential clients actually materializes. Been quite slow!
So far as screen shots and such, it would have been nice had I anticipated this event, but there it was and I had to write down what I could recall as to the steps leading up to the event. Saving it would lose history so I proceeded rather slowly to try and glean whatever I could.
Now, a variation on this occurred about an hour later. This time I was using the Burn Dodge tool. I flattened the file first, then proceeded to use the tool, and suddenly noticed that nothing happened when a went backwards through history, as if I didn't actually burn anything. The setting for the brush looked ok, and then I noticed that the file is no longer flattened! WTF! I was deliberate in doing so, and even if I went back to before flattening in History, flattened should be visible and available as I drop down through History. According to History, I never flattened it. This could also be the case in the first instance. I thought I had flattened it but it wasn't. I assumed I didn't flatten.
At this point, I have to consider that a prefs reset is adviseable, but before doing that, I really want to see if I can replicate either event. So far, no dice.
I checked the History setup to see if non-linear History was checked and it isn't. But it sure seems like it is.
One unusual condition is that last night, before going out for New Years, I saved my work but left PS running with the file open. So, this morning, I proceeded to do the little detail work on the open file as I intended to run some test prints.
That's when it all started.
Note: as I am writing this, I'm also checking out the app. I just tried to open PS. The icon in the tray showed PS is not running, but I cannot open it. The executable doesn't run. I've seen this before in Win7 and I usually open Task Manager and shut down the program. I see this on any number of programs, like even Fire Fox. But this time I noticed two versions of PS running. I didn't think this was possible. One shows a large memory component 670,000k, the other  about 6,000k. Huh? I shut down the smaller one and get a message that this is an illegal action, but it shuts down anyway.(That notice lasted only seconds and went away.)  I try again, I again see the second version in Processes, the same 6000k memory size. Now it shuts down with no notice. I know I saved the file and did tell PS to exit, so I shut down both instances of PS. Now it opens correctly.
I'm of a mind that there is some corruption going on.The fact that programs won't close when I exit does bother me. ( I'd hate to think about reinstalling the whole shootin' match!)  What I will do is enable the History log. and see if I can capture any information.

The text box remains available and can be edited if clicked on, also if i double click on it the typed words become visible and editable, however once i close the box i cannot see them on the screen.
I would appreciate any help i can get, i cant seem to do anything using properties or view.

Why should u not leave the case on the ipod while it is charging?

Because charging the iPod battery generates heat which may become excessive if the iPod is left in a case. If you don't allow the heat to escape, then you risk damage to the iPod.

  • The Case of the Disappearing Documents

The first time this happened to me, I figured I was just
imagining things. Now that's it's happened to me a second time, I
am certain that my imagination has nothing to do with it.
I am working in Captivate 2 in an XP (SP2) environment. I've
completed about a dozen projects successfully using Captivate 1 and
am in the midst of creating my first project in version 2.
I've created a Captivate 2 document with less than a dozen
slides. I experience the disappearing menus problem quite
frequently -- perhaps every half hour or so while using the program
(I haven't tried the clicking on the library item trick yet, but
will the next time it happens). Typically I click on the Save
button and quit out of the program whenever it happens. One time
when I did that, the CP file went missing from the folder it was
    saved in. Completely missing.
The file icon itself was not in the Folder. The file name was
no longer listed on the launch window of the program, nor was it
listed in the File menu as a recently opened file. I know I am not
crazy and figured the file had to be somewhere on my hard drive, so
I started searching for files of a certain size which were updated
in the last day. I actually located the file, which had been
renamed renamed with a .tmp extension (and gobbledygook before the
extension). I only recognized the file because of its size and when
I hovered my mouse pointer over it, the document's name from the
Properties dialog box showed up in a tool tip. I was able to open
the file, rename it, and resume using it.
    I figured it was just a fluke...but now it's happened a
second time, albeit slightly different circumstances. The program
froze and BAM! the file completely disappeared. Again, I searched
my hard drive and was able to locate the file.
So now, I save a copy of my file about every half-hour in a
separate folder...because I cannot afford to lose more than a
half-hours' work. I am very worried about the stability of this
product. Does anybody have any ideas regarding this issue?

I don't know if version 3 will be any better, but I have my
doubts. I am totally embarrassed about my failure to be able to
complete this project on time for my client due to all of these
issues. As a freelancer, the ability to make my clients' deadlines
and provide a high-quality end product is crucial to my continued
success. I am furious with Adobe for this product's instability.

space... and using std naming convention for files (no special

Unfortunatly, missed deadlines and extra non-billing hours
will result in staffing issues and different purchasing decisions
in the next fiscal year. Some folks are saying ... why did Adobe
drop the "R" when they released Captivate2.
Is Captivate3 really going to be any better? If so... how
about a free upgrade for all of use who suffered through
Captivate2? It's really tough to justify the expense of Captivate3
to our bosses when all they have seen are the problems with
    Captiavte2.

  • Pls help me solve the case of the disappearing apps (Firefox & Mail)...

    Hi
    Can anyone help?
Last week I noticed that both my Firefox and Mail apps had mysteriously disappeared from the dock. I dragged them from Applications to where I normally 'keep' them (left end of my dock). Immediately they jumped to the right end of the dock in the space before the divider and the area for Documents and Trash. Other programs along my dock are fine...they just happily sit there and launch
This was weird in itself. Now, the apps aren't even appearing in the dock and when I go to drag them from Applications, they just disappear unopened from the dock again! I have to open then directly from their place under Applications. This is just a recent phenomenon and one I have no explanation for. It is understandably frustrating.
All my software is up to date. I don't use my MacBookPro every day but I do use it weekly for client work or to watch tv programs I've missed on BBC iPlayer.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Just to add:
    On my MacbookPro I:
    • Deleted Firefox
    • Reinstalled Firefox
    • Turned off dock in sync prefs
    • Deleted dock prefs
    • Restarted laptop...
    No change...
    (My MacPro is fine...)

  • The case of the disappearing mouse pointer

I use Keynote 3 several times a week to make up my presentations for work.
I use my eMac at home, running Panther (my work place uses Windows) and then I transfer the completed file over my home network to my iBook. I take my iBook to work, hook it up to a projector and give the presentation.
Lately, an interesting fault has arisen.
Say I'm making up a slide. Suddenly, my mouse pointer disappears.
I can physically wriggle the mouse and so on but I still can't see the pointer.
I used to save my work using "command S" and then re-open the file and the mouse pointer would be there again.
I now don't bother closing the file. I just twirl the mouse around a bit and the pointer eventually appears, usually from underneath the dock or, up in the file menu somewhere. Yes, that's right. Very weird. The mouse pointer seems to disappear under the window of the Keynote program.
Everything seems to work OK for a while and then it happens again.
    This is getting really annoying.
I can't figure out if it's an eMac fault or a Keynote problem.
I don't seem to be able to reproduce the fault when I use my iBook (running Tiger) to make up a presentation.
Has anyone else come across this fault before?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hello Brie
I apologise for not replying sooner. I've been away.
I tried your suggestion but it didn't make any difference.
I've just done 6 presentations over the last week and everything worked fine.
However, last night, I was making up a presentation and again, the mouse pointer disappeared.
    Stange!
I think it is a bug in the program.
    Anyway, thanks for the reply
    Regards
    JN

  • The Case of the Disappearing Disk Space

Last week when I noticed I only had 5.5 gigs on my hard disk, I decided to start deleting files and programs that I didn't really need anymore. I ended up freeing up about 7 gigs! However, I have since noticed something peculiar...
As I use my computer (mostly browsing and e-mail, no other downloading), my hard disk mysteriously gets filled up. And I don't mean a few megabytes here and there, but rather more than two gigs in just a couple of days! This doesn't seem normal to me at all. Even if I do save files, they are usually just small Word documents for school. A few minutes ago, Finder said I had 10.7 gigs on my hard disk with the trash emptied. After I restarted, it said I had 13.15. Since then, I've already lost .02 gigs and the only programs I have open are Mail and Safari.
Can someone please explain to me what is happening here? Thanks!

Okay, my hard disk is at 12.71 now and a random .rtf file reads 8 kb. I'll check it later (if I am doing this right...)
You don't seem to be doing it correctly. Open TextEdit, create a new window, and note down the usage of disk space reported by WhatSize by typing it out into this window. After the amount of free space on the hard disk has decreased, run WhatSize again and note down what is reported this time. Compare the differences in the two sets of notes.
Another possibility is to choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, enter /private/var/vm/ as the folder's path, and keep an eye on the number of items in this folder as you use the computer.

  • The Case Of The Disappearing Airport Express

All went well until I tried to update software to my Airport Express (AE). After the update I cannot find my AE no matter what I try. Multiple scans lead to the same end result.....nothing. Prior to the update the AE was discoverable with no problem. Any help appreciated.

    Aquatic999,
    Few things to try:
Shut down the Express for 5-10 minutes and power up again.
    Restart your computer.
If you are trying to "see" the Extreme via wireless, use an ethernet cable between your computer and the Express.
If you still cannot find the device, you will need to do a hard reset by holding in the reset button until the amber light blinks rapidly.
Last resort is pulling the power on the Express, hold in the reset button and CONTINUE to hold it in while you power it back up. Release the reset button after approximately 10 seconds.

  • The case of the mysterious hidden content - second hand iMac

Dear people with more knowledge than me... (i.e. dear everyone...)
I have recently purchased a second hand intel iMac (late 2006 model) to replace my trusty (but noisy) Powermac G4 Mirror Door Drive. It was purchased 'wiped' with a fresh install of Lion.
I used Carbon Copy Cloner to create a backup of my old hard drive (or at least the 60GB partition of it that I was using - I had Tiger installed on it) and then used the Migration Assistant to re-create an image of Zion in the wide expanses of the new promised land (250GB capacity).
All seemed to go well (but time consuming - it took several days to port everything to/from my USB external hard-drive). A few days later, when I checked About this mac I was shocked to discover that I only had 5GB of storage remaining.
I did a little poking about and realised I had left a couple of user profiles hanging around during my pre-Migration Assistant faffing. These duplicated much of what I had later migrated over more comprehensively, so I deleted these additional user profiles and this freed up a further 58GB or so.
My system information now tells me that I have
    249.2 GB Capacity
    63.69 GB Available
    185.5 GB Used
    The used component consists of:
    Audio 137.47 GB
    Movies 7.03 GB
    Photos 9.74 GB
    Apps 3.34 GB
    Backups 0
    Other 27.94 GB
However, when I go through all my available files and folders using the Finder, the grand total of space that I have used comes to around 88GB:
My home folder (the only user profile I didn't delete) 42.98 GB
Desktop 4.09 GB (I know, I know, clean your room...)
    Applications 2.31 GB
    Documents 2.8 MB (yes MB)
    Movies 0
    Music 38.59 GB
    Photos 385 KB (yes KB)
    Total ± 80GB
Leaving aside for a moment the fact that the disk partition I Migrated over was only 60GB in total (?!), where on earth are the other 97.5 GB of files, and how can I see/delete them to free up drive space I thought I had...?
...I imagine that the audio, movies etc., that are unaccounted for actually belong(ed) to the previous owner of the iMac. What I don't know how to do is see/access/delete them to free up disk space. There are no additional users other than my own account that I can see. That's not to say they are not there.
    What can I do?
Thank you in anticipation of any help or advice.

the (hidden) folder _CCC Archives takes up a whopping 107 GB, much of which consists of multiple copies of the same audio files (due to poor file management and copies of copies, I think..). I'm now looking for a utility that will be able to locate and list duplicate files so I can verify that the _CCC Archives folder files are replicated elsewhere.
I use CCC, but not the "archive" feature (since my main backups are made with Time Machine).
According to it's Help, that folder contains the backup copies of files that had been changed on the "source" drive.
But this large folder is on your internal HD, right?  Here's what I think happened:
When you made the original CCC clone from your old Mac, you selected the option to "archive" the copies of things that had been changed.  For some period of time, it did that.
Later, when you used Migration Assistant, it copied all those old files from the clone (via the Other files and folders on <HD name> option) back on to your new internal HD.
So yes, the files there should be prior versions of things on your system.
There are various options to have CCC manage those files.  You can assign a certain size to it, and it will delete the oldest files when necessary to make room for new ones;  or "prune" files after a specified number of days, etc.
Click Help in the CCC menubar, then CCC help, then review the Backup and archiving settings section:

  • The lcd screen of my 15-inch Macbook Pro (mid 2009) is separating from the case. The glue failed due to the heat.  How can I get Apple to fix this factory flaw?

The heat vented from the back of the laptop caused the glue to fail and now the screen is separating from back of the lcd case near the hinges. I know for a fact that this issue is known by Apple as I have seen the issue reported at least a dozen times.  This laptop was considerably more expensive than any comparable laptop at the time I bought it. I bought it believing that I was buying a quality product from a quality company.   I've owned many laptops and I have never seen anything like this.  My laptop is out of warranty but this is really besides the point.  This is clearly a factory defect that Apple should remedy.  What do I need to do to get Apple to fix this design flaw?

    Ask Apple.
