The catalog could not be opened because it is currently in use by another program

I get the following error message when I try to open Organizer:
"The catalog could not be opened because it is currently in use by another program."
Any suggestions?

Have you rebooted?

  • The volume could not be ejected because it is currently in use

    Hello
Can anyone help me with this? I regularly use external USB and Firewire hard drives. It is not uncommon for me to get this message at times when it appears to me that nothing at all is open or in use on a particular drive. Right now I have a 500 GB USB drive plugged in. I shut down every application I was aware of. I cannot think of anything on that drive that is "in use." Like I said, this happens once in a while with different drives and I feel stuck. I have Activity Monitor open and am looking for something obvious but don't know quite what to look for. Disk Utility gives me the same message. Any clues; help?
    Thanks.

Hello and thanks to: planb77; WZZZ; and Fortuny. (Sorry Fortuny but after marking helpful on planb77 and WZZZ, your post no longer gave me that option, it changed to only give me the option to click solved. Go figure.
    Anyway...
planb77 - not sure how I would “kill all the current Finder processess” but the link you provided sure spoke directly to the issue and, though I have not tried the Terminal force eject as yet (next time I get stuck I will) I was pleased to read that it is an issue and Apple is hopefully addressing it.
WZZZ - that was helpful, knowing now that mdworker is associated with Spotlight. I have discovered Spotlight to be the culprit behind a few mysterious pauses, halts, humms and what seemed like meditative moments. I’ve since learned to set aside down time to dedicate Spotlight toward the indexing of a given drive, rather than try to work while it is working..
Fortuny - (Stefan) I am reading the comments by the reviewers and the developer. This thing sounds scary and fantastic. I’m going to try it out. Thanks for the tip.

What is the best way to copy aperture library on to external hard drive? I am getting a message that say's "There was an error opening the database. The library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported". What does that mean? I am trying to drag libraries (with metadata) to external HD...wondering what the best way to do that is?

Hi Shane.  Not much in the way of thoughts - - but fwiw:
    How is the drive attached?
Can you open large files on the drive with other programs?
Are you running any drive compression or acceleration programs (some drives arrive with these installed)?
Can you reformat the drive and try again?
    Hi Kirby,
I attached the UltraMax Plus with a USB cable. The UltraMax powers the cable so power is not an issue. I can open other files. Also, there is 500GB of files on the drive so I cannot re-format it. Although, I noted I could import the entire Aperture Library. However, I do not want to create a duplicate on my machine because that would be defeating the purpose of the external drive.
    Thanks,

  • IPhoto The library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported.

Have Yosemite installed on both my MBA and Mac Pro. iPhoto 9.0 running well on the MBA but when I tried opening iPhoto on my Mac pro get the message "The library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported." This is after I upgraded iPhoto.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

While holding down the command & option keys boot into iPhoto and have it repair the Library.  If that does not work then download "Library Manager" and have that program work.  I found that better than the Apple program.

Your solution worked when applied to a administrative user account but did work with a student account.
I'm not sure why that is happening.
If you're on Vista or Windows 7, you could try setting the program to run permanently as Administrator, as described here:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshop-elements-faq.htm#_Slide_show_preview
If that doesn't help, my only suggestion would be to work through these tedious troubleshooting steps:

It's absolutley scandalous that a company with Apple's resources can let this happen.  They should have staggered the release by region rather than opening the flood gates.  The upgrade itself took me about 10 attempts to download it, and then I thought I was home free.  That was until it rebooted and won't activate.  It's over 2 hours now.
    Scandalous!

How do i solve The photo could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found

The issue is with iPhoto. When it opens it is looking for a photo that either no longer exists or is misplaced. I would post I the iPhoto forum where those experts are.

  • Trying to make a iPhoto Library on my external hard drive but I get "the library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported.

Trying to make a iPhoto Library on my external hard drive but I get "the library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported."  I reformatted my hard drive to ExFAT because I want to be able to use it on PC and MAC.
    iOS: 10.10.1
    Mac Book Air
External: WD 500 GB recently reformatted (no files on it currently)

The iPhoto library must only be on a volume formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) - it can not be on any other format drive

  • The catalog could not be opened.  An internal programming error occured.

I have gotten the following error when I started Elements today...
    Failed To Open Catalog
! The catalog could not be opened.  An internal programming error occured.
I have tried to move the catalog to a different directory to no effect.
This computer is rarely online, it is only used to catalog my pictures, and I have 100s of hours of work in this catalog.
Is this recoverable?  How did this happen?
    Background:
Size of the catalog directory: 61MB
    Core Version 9.0.3
    Operating Systems: 6.1 SP1
    Thanks for your support.

Create a new, empty catalog:  Hold down your Shift key when launching the Organizer and you'll get the Catalog Manager window.  Create a new catalog, naming it something completely different than your existing catalog.
Once you're in the Organizer, use File...Catalog to open the Catalog Manager window.  Highlight your old catalog and hit the "Repair" button.  When that finishes, repeat, using "Optimize".  Then try to open your old catalog.

  • How do I correct this error, "The catalog could not be opened due to an unexpected error."?

How do I correct this error, "The catalog could not be opened due to an unexpected error."?

Surely you could provide some more information. Your system, what version of LR, is this your first attempt at using the program, or what has been prior experience?  Things are a bit foggy.

  • "The picture could not be opened because the original image could not be found."

"The picture XXXXX.jpg could not be opened because the original image could not be found." - I've translated from Portuguese, so it's possible to contain errors on text but I think it is clear to understand.
This error message has appeared on my screen for a thousand times, repeatedly. I've canceled everyone, but still appears, how this error has ocurred for every picture in my library.
I gave up, I'm tired to cancel every window. I don't know what to do. And worst, I'm not able to open Settings or any other command, only "Cancel" or "Search Image", and it opens a Finder window that doesn't give me access to iPhoto Library.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Mail V6.3 pdf attachments "the file could not be opened because it is empty"

I received an email with a pdf document attached.  When I try to open it by saving it or directly from the email, I get the message "The File 'filename' could not be opened because it is empty."
The file extension is correct with .pdf. Adobe is up to date. It will not open in Preview either. No updates needed for Mac OS 10.8.3.

Does this involve iPhoto in some way?

  • The library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported.

What to do now? Tried also to open the library directly from finder. This campe up. First tried to import library from aperture.

We recommend to use "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" on an external drive where you are going to store your Aperture library. Copy the library to the internal disk and open it from there. Then, use Disk Utility to format the external disk > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Copy all the files on the external drive to the internal disk before formatting.
Note that you will lose the ability to use the external disk with PCs, so you will need an application like Paragon HFS on all PCs you want to use the external disk
