The changed picture description in iPhoto doesn't copy to flash drive, reverts o original img number

for easier access i changed indiviual picture descriptions from original img numbers to dates eg 14-01-01.  this shows on iphoto okay. when i copy to a flashdrive, the date reverts to he image number.  how can i save changes?

Unless you held down the Command key when dragging the iPhoto Library package to the flash drive you only copied the library.  How is the flash drive formatted?  If it was not OS X Extended (journaled) the integrity of the library's internal structure was probably compromised.
If you don't have a current backup of your library do the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window. Be sure to follow the circled recommendation in the screenshot.
2 - run Option #4, Rebuild Database.

  • I'm trying to transfer my pictures from my iPhoto library to my external hard drive. I dragged the iPhoto Library folder into the drive and after waiting a while it says Error Code -36. I need to free up space asap, what should i do?

I'm trying to transfer my pictures from my iPhoto library to my external hard drive. I dragged the iPhoto Library folder into the drive and after waiting a while it says "Error Code -36 The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in 'iPhoto Library' could not be read or written". I need to free up space asap, what should i do??

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

  • I am not able to transfer pictures from my Iphoto file to my external hard drive.  When I drag and drop to the external hard drive, I get the universal circle with a line through it.????

For some reason, my computer will not let me drop my pictures from the Iphoto location to my external hard drive.

The drive is formatted for Windows. To write to it from a Mac, you will either have to reformat it or install third-party software to enable writing to an NTFS volume (not recommended.)

  • Where do I find the actual pictures imported to iPhoto?

My wife imported a ton of her pictures in her user account in iPhoto. When we go see them, I only see the thumbnails and not the pictures. How is this possible? I can't seem to find the actual picture. Are we doing something wrong?
    Please help

The mac enforces a variety of file permission rules by default that get in the way of sharing the same iPhoto library between users on the same system.
You may need to fix the permissions on the original folder before relocating to the Shared folder. batchmod gets good recommendations around here as a tool that eases the process of permissions management. You want to set your iPhoto library for full read/write for all users on your system. Then move the whole folder to the Shared folder. Then hold down the option key as you launch iPhoto and select the iPhoto Library folder in Shared as your new Library. Repeat the iPhoto launch w/option key from each user that wants to use that shared library.

  • I rebuilt the thumbnail cache and lost all the changes and editing I had made to 4000 photos every photo reverted back to the original

A tech rebuilt my iphoto thumbnail cache and afterwards all the changes and editing of all my 4000 photos was gone!
Every phot had reverted back to the original!!!!! WHAT HAPPENED???? Why were all my changes destroyed? Where are the photos that I edited?
Also a bunch of photos disappeared. HELP!!!!!

Of course there is no reason that rebuilding a thumbnail cache would cause a loss of all editing of my photos!!! But that's what happened.
I was there when the tech rebuilt  the library and thumbnails. He held down shift & command and opened Iphoto and a window appeared with "Rebuild Photo Library" with 6 boxes to check such as
    1) Repair Iphoto Library Database
    2) Rebuild Iphoto Library Database from automatic backup
    3) Rebuild the photos' small thumbnails
    4) Rebuild all the photos'thumbnails (this may take a while)
    5) Recover orphaned photos in the Iphoto Library Folder
    6) Examine and repair IPhotoLibrary file permissions
The tech checked all boxes and after Iphoto has rebuilt everything all my editing was gone and all my photos had reverted back to their originals representing 5 years work.
There are no stuck keys on my keyboard of my computer.

  • How do I download the full resolution JPEG images from my iPhone to my flash drive through my mac?

When I plug my iPhone 5S into my MacBook Pro through a USB 2.0 to Lightning cable, the phone doesn't show up as a device in finder (#imisssnowleopard). How can I grab the images off the phone and put the files on my flash drive? (without using the iPhoto library compression or the iTunes photo compressing) (iPhone 5S with latest iOS)(15" MacBook Pro June 2009, most recent OS X)

Use Image Capture to import the pictures wherever you want to have them.

  • Iphoto no longer responding to flash drive

When my memory filled up on my Macbook, I moved my iphoto library onto a flashdrive. I have been using this flashdrive for the past year with no problem as far as opening my iphoto library. Randomly today, my iphoto refuses to open the library - freezing every time until I have to force quit it. I tried going direclty into the flash drive to open the library, but when I do this, iphoto just opens completely blank. I know it is not a problem with the flash drive failing, as I have gotten onto the flashdrive and opened other documents I have stored there. I also know it is not an issue of the library being damaged, as I am always careful to eject it. I've tried rebooting the computer and reinserting the flashdrive. Anyone have any ideas? I have lots of pictures in that library and being unable to access them is simply enfuriating.

How big is the flash drive and how much free space is there on it?  Also how is the flash drive formatted?  If must be OS X Extended (journaled) for iPhoto to work reliably.

  • IPhoto & iTunes libraries on USB flash drive. What happens after erase/install?

Not exactly sure how much background someone like Kappy needs for this question but I'll try to not make it a novel.
My late 2010 MBA (64GB) was way low on storage so I decided to get a 64GB USB drive for it and put my iTunes and iPhoto libraries on it. Moving both libraries went exactly according to the instructions. But then after a while iPhoto started to get very slow. The spinning beach ball was running amok. This prompted me to use DU on the new flash drive which didn't show any problems. After doing that I decided to run DU on my mac HD and found a problem that coudn't be repaired without erasing and re-installing Mavericks 10.9.2..
Now, here is my current situation:  I have erased and as I write this am downloading a clean copy of Mavericks from recovery. I had backed up everything to my TC just yesterday.
    Here is my question:
After re-installing what do I do about telling iTunes and iPhoto where to find the libraries? Or, should I just use the copy of everything that I had backed up yesterday?
Sorry in advance if this is a stupid question. I checked to see if there was some support file for my issue but couldn't find anything that really fit.
As always, thanks for everyone's input. I always learn something from you guys.
    Regards, Richard
P.S.: I realize that the problem with iPhoto might not have been the issue with my mac HD and doing what I've done may not fix it. But I wanted to fix the problem with the HD before I went any further trying to fix iPhoto. I hadn't had issues with iTunes functioning with the flash drive, only iPhoto.

Yes, there's no real solution.  Apple makes thin, small computers and devices, but of course that means no big drive to store all the bulky media Apple itself promotes on the iTunes Store.  You then have to buy external storage which is almost as big as the device you are using, negating the whole concept of a mobile device.  I guess you can try wireless, though I can tell you I see about 30+ wireless devices in my neighborhood and with them trying to share only 3 non-overlapping channels I frequently see network slowdown through interference.  Of course you bought that nice light computer so you could take it away form home too, but then you are locked into using what's available on the Internet. I guess part of Apple's answer is cloud storage and redownloading.  However, Apple itself says you need to maintain your own independent archive: "You always back up your iTunes library in the event that a purchased item is no longer available on the iTunes Store," (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519), and, Downloading (using iOS or computer) past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not all media formats are available in all countries (see: iTunes in the Cloud, iTunes Match, and iTunes Radio availability by country - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5085 ); apps, books (not audiobooks), music, t.v. shows, and movies (some - not all studios have permitted this).   Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list (e.g., ringtones, audiobooks), or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.
Cloud storage is a convenience but not a replacement for a hard drive at home (and of course, works best when you buy everything from the iTunes Store).

  • IMac doesn't "see" USB Flash drive on initial insertion

    Hi,
I have a new iMac running Mavericks with a powered SIIG external USB hub. (Rear USB port design on iMac is inconvenient).
Problem: When I insert a NTFS-formatted USB Flash drive into the hub, the light blinks as expected, but the iMac doesn't "see" it and it doesn't show up in "Devices".
When I remove and re-insert the USB drive, the iMac then "sees" it just fine and it shows up in "Devices"
    Seeing this consistently.
Any ideas what might be happening here?
I also have Paragon NTFS installed to enable read/write to external NTFS drives.
    Thanks.

I've tried 2 Anker 10 port hubs with my brand new iMac 27" Retina.  No storage device is recognized when connected via the hub.  The same storage devices are recognized when I plug directly into my iMac.  So there seems to be an issue from the iMac to the hub.

  • Media Creator doesn't recognize USB flash drive

When I insert 16gb USB as requested and click OK, the same pop up comes up and the Creator shows Canceled??I close the window and try to start again with the same results?  I am not computer savy and am about ready to return this one.

Hi Dokie: Thank  you for the extended details re. Laptop Toshiba S55-A5326  Media Recovery Creator Windows 7 Pro non-recognition of the Sans Disk flash drive even after I formatted it  (wasted a frustrating hour and a half thinking that the problem was non-computer savvy me  -- though I did get an even exchange for PNY 16 Gig that worked immediately). So... PNY 16 GIG WORKS WITH WINDOWS 7 PRO RECOVER MEDIA CREATOR ON THE TOSHIBA S55-A5326 !!! Had the computer for two days liking it every second; figured I'd back up the original operating system for insurance before I started loading in a lot of programs and before receiving MS updates -- Even set a MS system recovery back-up date for the  the first day I had it. Thank you also for the Macrium Reflect reference (professional guitarist I am ignorant of too much of the computer technology though I do do digital recording; I do prefer having an additional back-up on an external hard drive. Looks like that program is the way to go. I went to the site but had a bit of difficulty about which of the freeware choices would work -- so I did not download anything for fear of doing the wrong thing (I noticed some of the programs "scanned and repaired" rather than just create OS images.  I'm all for purchasing a good product if it's the right one as add'l insurance. Once again, Dokie thanks again for your time, efforts, concern, conscientiousness, and expertise. Sincerely,Allears.

  • I renamed the card reader and now iPhoto doesn't work

i am using a card reader to upload photos to iPhoto. everything works fine until yesterday i renamed the card reader icon (the icon always says "Untitled" but i renamed it to something else) and now it doesn't read anymore. the warning says "Unreadable Files: 1" it's in unrecognized format. i wonder if it has anything to do with renaming the file. what can i do and how can it fix this?

    Possibly
iPhoto does not see your card reader - it sees the card so renaming it might create a problem since you are writing to the card
Do you have photos on it you need to save? If so give image capture a try (it is in your applications folder) or use the finder -- once you have your photos off of it user your camera to reformat the card (the camera's format command) and see if that cures it (it probably will go back to untitled)

  • How can add captions or title to a picture now that iPhoto doesn't work after updating to iOS 8.

I Have updated to iOS 8 and iPhoto is dismissed. How can add a caption /title (not in the image) like I was used with iPhoto? Photos has not this feature.
please, could anyone help me. I'm a real beginner. Thanks,

The photos.app does not (yet) have the option to add captions or tags. It is not possible right now. You can however search for the captions you added previously using the search field.  You can also search for album names.  So, as a work-around, put photos that should have the same caption into an album with a name like the caption.
See:  Migrating from iPhoto for iOS to Photos on iOS 8
You may want to send feedback to Apple, that captions and tags are essential and need to be added in an update. Use this form:   Apple - iPhoto - Feedback

  • New to the MacAir. Moved documents and photos from computer to flash drive.  How do I now move to Mac?  And how do I drag and drop?

New to the Mac and not finding manual helpful.  Did not want to move everything from my old computer so just put the phots and documents I wanted on a thumb drive but don't know how to now move them onto the computer.  Something talks of drag and drop but it won't move.
    thank you
    Jeanne

Understood, ... go into FINDER at top then PREFERENCES  then GENERAL tab
then check "hard disks" and "external disks"
THIS WILL PUT A HD ICON ON YOUR DESKTOP YOU CAN OPEN AND DRAG AND DROP FILES TO  (or from)
THEN  verify the format of your external HD
go to DISK UTILITY and verify what it says your HD is formatted as under the "ERASE" tab
HFS+ above is the "mac format" however do NOT erase / format the HD, since this will erase it.....UNLESS you want to do this
Format (erase) it in "mac osx Extended journaled"
AFTER THIS YOU CAN DRAG AND DROP FILES AS YOU LIKE

  • How do you save changes made in iPhoto, and export the changed file.  It keeps reverting back to the original.

How do you save changes made in iPhote, and export the changed picture file? When I select export, current format, it reverts to the original, wiping out all my work.

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7 or later: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • How come iPhoto doesn't recognize my iPhone anymore?

When I first got an iPhone I could sync it to iPhoto and take all the photos off.  Now iPhoto doesn't recognise my iPad or iPhone. Additionally I have overcapacity of 5 GB on my 64 GB iPhone, all because of my 30000 pictures.  Macbook Pro
    Thank you!

Thanks a lot for your help, unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work, so the only option I have left, to my knowledge is to visit an Apple Store, physically, with my laptop and iPhone,
