The common Safari network problem - help!
Hello
I've been involved in a couple of other posts on this topic, but thought it would be easier to pull out my problem into a topic of its own, as it's still unresolved.
The problem is a familiar one I think.
It would be great to have some help and advice as it's driving me nuts!
Here's the symtoms:
Safari takes an age to load pages and often gets stuck trying.
Tellingly, my airtunes stops and starts when I'm playing music over the network to my stereo.
I've got a MacBook running 10.4.8 with AirTunes.
So far, I've tried the following:
- Made sure software is up to date
- Emptied cache
- Ran Firefox which is just as slow
- Repaired permissions using Disk Utility
- Changeed my primary cabel protocol (airport) to be first on the list and deslected others
- Removed any superflous wi-fi locations I don't use
- In the TCP panel>DNS servers, entered 4.2.2.2
Can anyone think of anything else to try?
I read something about 10.4.8 having a few network issues, so someone suggested redoing the update, but I'm not sure I understood what they meant about doing things with permissions before and afterwards?
Can anybody help?!
Many thanks in advance peeps.......
Just reporting back on the weekend's testing.
I ran the Hardware test, but it detected no problems.
I also changed my network settings to Manual with fixed IP - but it hasn't made any difference at all.
So I can rule out my netgear router/modem, airport airtunes, safari and my isp (I have exactly the same problems on other wireless networks and also using firefox) and now I suppose my mac's hardware.
Does that just leave
1. the configuration of my network and
2. OSX 10.4.8
then?
Maybe I should just wait for Leopard?!
Do you think it would still be worth trying it out using an Ethernet connection rather than wireless?
If so, would you be able to give me a step-by-step guide, as I find the Network prefs very confusing.
Thank you so much for all your help so far, I'm very grateful - I think this is my longest running Mac problem to date....
I've included some info here from the system profiler:

i have a strange issue. i just got wireless internet access in my home and for some reason i can get to the internet via firefox but not safari. i also can't access the itunes music store (network connection timed out). are these related? is there a network problem that is effecting both? why would one browser work and not the other? i'm not sure where to start looking to fix this problem so any suggestions will be helpful.
well, this was sort of resolved...
i brought my computer to a mac store/repair. somehow the hard drive "died" while in service and i ended up having to pay for a new hard drive. supposedly "it was about ready to die b/c of the problems i was having."
yeah, right. -
"The application Safari quit unexpectedly" help!
I keep getting dropped from the internet with the notice, "the application Safari quit unexpectedly.
The problem may have been caused by the FlashPlayer -10.4-10.5 plug in."
I have a MAC mini OSX 10.5.8
and I use Safari 5.0.6
I've read this discussion group and have seen problems LIKE mine, but with subtle differences.
I completely erased my hard drive and reinstalled EVERYTHING.
(It didn't help.)
I have NOT downloaded any programs that might be incompatible with my computer.
Is there an upgrade adobe flash drive that might help this?
(I'm not sure which upgrade I'm using. I am just using the one that came with this computer.)

I updated my iPad2 to the new OS7 .....I am getting a blue i with a circle around it next to the networks in my district that I want to connect to. Does anyone know what that means?
Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
5. Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
• Launch Settings app
• Tap on Wi-Fi
• Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
• In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

Not the usual 'login loop' problem, help.
The login loop problem I'm facing is not the usual login loop problem when starting up mac; it's when I'm trying to log into websites or applications (most of them, eg. facebook, instagram).
I have tried:
using other browsers: Safari, Firefox, Maxthon, Chrome
clearing all cookies / caches / keychains / passwords
repairing disk
deleting launchservices cache
using other userid to login
All to no avail.
How do I solve this without having to reformat/install mac?
Thank you.Hi, are you using Parental contrils or a managed account, or an admin account?

"Software update can't check for updates because of a network problem" - help!
Recently, when I perform a software update check on the pulldown Apple menu, I get this error:
"Software update can't check for updates because of a network problem."
The only problem is that my network works just fine. I use the internet and get emails without any problem. But I can't figure how I can fix Software Update.
The only relevant updates have been for Glims and 1Password. Oh, and note the same problem trying to access the App Store; I just get a "Can't connect to the App Store" error.
Any hints?I have to solve all my own problems.
The problem was due to Little Snitch. Once I upgraded from 2.4.0 to 2.4.2, my system works swimmingly again.

I have a Toshiba laptop, serial # XXXXXXXXX, it's running Windows Vista 32bit or whatever.
I bought a Belkin Router which has WPA-2 secured wireless internet.
Our Dell desktop computer can connect to the internet with ethernet, but my Toshiba laptop cannot with either ethernet or wireless.
My Toshiba laptop CAN however connect to my schools unsecured network and my parents WPA-Personal wireless internet.
After doing many things that worked for others, (check and uncheck IPV4 and 6, Uninstalling and reinstalling security, I dont have Norton Antivirus, etc) out of frusteration I reinstalled my Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network Adapter and guess what!? It worked and I got my internet back!...of course after restarting my computer it was once again broken...and now it says something like "connecting is taking longer than usual..." which it never said before....
It says it has 'excellent strength' but it is a 'local access only' connection and an 'Unidentified network'.
Please help me figure this out, I need this laptop for school and I'm behind now.
[mod edit to remove serial number]When you use the Toshiba Forum, use the model name and not the serial number. Unless you work for Toshiba and have access to the serial number database, it doesn't tell anyone which computer you are using.
If your computer connects with other wireless routers, but not yours, it sounds like a router issue. Drop the encryption on the router and see if that fixes the problem. Maybe the version of encryption you are using is not compatible or its something else entirely. If temporarily getting rid of the encryption fixes the problem, its the encryption. If not, it maybe something else.
See if your computer can see other wireless routers in the area. Always a good sign that the wireless antenna is turned on and sees other networks in the area.
Check your wireless router settings. It doesn't make sense that the computer can't connect up either wired or wirelessly unless the router settings are preventing it. Maybe you have MAC address filtering or a limited number of DHCP addresses. Consider resetting the wireless router back to its default settings and seeing if that fixes it. -
Help! I have read the forum and tried out every possible solution suggested there. iCloud mail is not pushing in either my Iphone5 or iPad 1.
ThanksYep. Arrived in 2 seconds. You should make an appointment with the Genius bar at a nearby Apple store and have them look at your phone. Sometimes you miss things over the phone that they can see when they physically look at it.
You should also try backing it up and restoring it, unless you have already. If it were me, I would back it up, then restore it as a new iPhone (without using my backup or not sync anything). Then only setup iCloud mail and see if it pushes. If it does, that would indicate that there is something corrupt in your backup that's causing the problem. If that's the case, restore the backup, save as much of your data as you can, then restore it as a new phone again and start over. -
Home Networking Problem - Help!
I'm to network my Windows Vista Laptop and my Macbook over my home network but I'm having trouble.
I've gone through the steps (i.e. turned windows sharing on Macbook etc...). I've tried connecting from the vista laptop and vice versa.
When I go to network on the Vista my Macbook shows up on the network. I click on it and I'm asked for my username and password. When I type them in I'm told there incorrect. I've check - there correct.
When I try to connect from the Macbook I'm told the location doesn't exist or may not be operational.
Any suggestions on how I can the connection up and running??
Cheers! When you are connecting to the MacBook from the Vista computer and are typing in a username and password, are you using a username and password of one of the accounts on the MacBook? If you try to use a user account that exists only on the Vista machine, the MacBook won't know who you are.
Best of luck. -
A 3 y/o turned on my private browser and I cannot turn it off. iPad says go to settings/safari/private browser button, there is no browser button there on either my iPad or my phone. Anyone know where I can locate it?
If you are running iOS 7, tap on the blue + sign in the upper right part of the Safari toolbar to open a new tab. Look in the lower left part of the screen for the word "Private". Tap on that to disable private browsing.

For the past two days my 3G and EDGE has been unstable. I have been constantly getting an error. Safari can't open the page. The error was: "Operation could not be completed. (kCFErrorDomainCFNetwork error 302.)"
I am using Rogers and since July 11th I've had no problems with my phone. Do you think its a Rogers problem or can I do something on my phone to help?
Thank you,
AustinRogers is working on the problem, They haven't given an ETA at the moment (most network problems are resolved within 48 hours of opening a master ticket). Unfortunately, since the problem seemed remote for the first 48 hours, the Ticket wasn't opened until late Saturday Aug. 23 2008. It's a good idea to give them a call, and add your account to the Master ticket. This will enable them to call you for any specifics on your particular problem if the issue isn't fixed past their own resolution and offers some insight into the troubleshooting of this issue. If any refunds, crediting or exchange issues come up, they will be able to refer back to the Master ticket and find who are eligible for this process.

Hi all.
I'm setting up my second Snow Leopard Server machine and I'm having the most frustrating networking problems.
I'm setting up a server with two NICs, and for some bizarre reason connection will NOT work. Trying to ping within the subnet of the inoperative connection produces "no route to host" errors. Switch the IP configurations between the two NICs, and the problem follows the primary configuration. The same network settings work correctly on a different machine, so the problem is definitely software.
I can't help wondering if this is related to source-based routing in 10.6. But I've tried flushing the routing table to no avail.
This exact same issue happened with the other Snow Leopard server I set up. After a few days of idling, the problems magically resolved themselves. Unfortunately, I don't have time for that to happen with this server.
Any suggestions? The forums are littered with dual-controller subnet routing discussions; it's a very common issue.
Easiest fix: don't use a Mac as an expensive (and slow) IP router (or NAT box). Use an external firewall.
If you really want to wade into IP routing (and do you actually have enough network traffic to warrant lighting up two gigabit Ethernet connections right now?) then poke around for the existing discussions of setting up the ordering of the controllers and establishing subnet routing live and after each reboot.
I'm probably going to end up writing an article and posting it, as this arises way too often, and folks are understandably having issues with locating the problem given that most (understandably) don't know they need to look for subnets and static routes and such.
Existing threads including [this|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10688941] and [this|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5697532] are reasonable starting points for your dual-NIC quest.
One other related gremlin that crops up here is the subnet addressing assignments; you'll usually want to have the (co-resident) NICs using addresses in separate subnets or routing can get squirrelly.
Or plug in the external firewall (which has other advantages) and use it as the router and firewall and NAT box for your LAN. -

My daughter has just bought me an iPad 2 from Dubai and set it all up for me but unfortunately the iMessage function doesn't seem to work. We keep getting messages, when trying to activate it, that there is a network connection problem - help!
Thank you both for your responses but my daughter was reassured by the salesman in the iStyle store (official Apple store in the UAE) that iMessages would work but conceded that FaceTime wouldn't. My iTunes account is registered in the uk and my daughter's iPhone has iMessages even though she bought it (and uses it) in Dubai. Can anyone else throw any light on this?

Since I have Yosemite on my iMac I can't view PDF files in Safari anymore. It keeps telling me to upgrade my Adobe Reader, but it is the latest version. Please help? I don't have this problem on my Macbook that does not have Yosemite installed.
Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print or save PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to do so by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar should appear under the cursor. Click the printer or disk icon.
Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
and check the box marked
Allow Plug-ins
Then click
Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
/Library/Internet Plug-ins
In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
Step 5
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others—I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
Step 6
Do as in Step 4 with this line:
~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

Why won't chapter markers in FCP5 import to idvd6?
I recently imported a video project that I created in FCP5 into iDVD6 for DVD authoring. I put chapter markers in the video project with the idea that IDVD6 would create the sub menus. For some reason they are not showing up. I've checked the appropr
