The complete steps to bring to factory settings
Hi...
This is my first Mac experience, thus please bear with me.
My MacBook Pro 15" 1.83 GHz had been running fine. Since the first time I started it up, I had never undergone a single hang. Not even a single hang during low or high load, eventhough at times CoreDuoTemp reported temp as high as 70-80 degrees Celcius! I was using stock MBP 15" 1.83 GHz with 2 GB of Crucial memory modules.
However, at late Dec 2006, I found out that my MBP fans are not working at all. smcFanControl reported my fans ran at 0 rpm. Ah, that was probably the reason I had 70-80 degrees Celcius on high load. Thus, after scheduling for a repair, I got my logic board replaced. I got the Mac OS X 10.4.6 discs too. smcFanControl reported 1000 rpm fan speed for both fans since then. All were great once more. Not even a single hang still!
One day in early March 2007, I got my first hang The display are still on, I was running Eclipse 3.2.1 on top of Java SE 6 DP1. If I recalled correctly, I was charging my MBP. I could not move the cursor using USB mouse or the trackpad and keyboard strokes didn't have any effects. I forced shutdown my Mac and tried to start it up and after booting, I experienced 5 times consecutive lock ups.
I thought, could it be because my Mac was in hot condition? I decided to put it in rest, let it finished charging. The day after, I tried to boot my Mac and everything was OK.
A weak ago, I got another hangs. I was charging my Mac. I was not running Eclipse. I was simply browsing. The machine was hot. I put it in rest, and started it up a few hours later and everything is OK.
A few days ago, I got another round of hangs. I was charging too. I was coding with TextMate.
Now with 10.4.9 is officially out, I thought I will try to reinstall everything. I had never reinstalled Mac OS X before. Here are the questions:
1. What do I need to reset? PRAM? SMC? Just to make sure that I got my MBP to near as factory condition as can be. And in what order?
2. After I do any hardware resets, should I just install Mac OS X from my 10.4.6 disc and reactivate my Mac OS X? (hmm... is there any activation things at all?)
I plan to update to 10.4.9 right away using the combo updater. I really hope I will not experience more hangs.
Thanks for your attention.
John

We want to move day-to-day usage ove rthe OS X side...to migrate all user preferences, mail, addresses, bookmarks, data files, etc.I am not sure exactly what is meant by this, nor of what you want to do to "move day to day usage" etc.
If you mean you want to use OS X regularly instead of OS 9, you need to go to Control Panels in OS 9 and select Starup Disk. Then select OS X on MacHD and restart computer. You will now be in OS X.
...to migrate all user preferences, mail, addresses, bookmarks, data files, etc.Since Mail, AddressBook are different applications in OS X, you will have to start over. You can import from other OS X computers if you want to, or network with the other computers in your household.
I feel like I am missing the point, somehow, so please redirect me with further questions, if you don't mind.
Good luck.

I followed the steps to restore to factory settings now I can't get back my info from a prior backup. My pads screen was frozen on the connect to iTunes I needed to restore. I had to setup my pad as if it was new. How do I acess my prior backup
Once again, KP is correct, but I just want to add that if you don't see the backup in the drop down menu on the summary page of iTunes when you choose the restore from backup option, then the backup is unfortunately gone. If you backup your computer, the iPad backup should probably be in that computer backup. I use Time Machine with my MacBook Pro and can access backups from months ago.
On a side note, I also archive backups from time to time. If you right click on a backup name in iTunes>Edit>Preferences>Devices (Windows) or iTunes>Preferences>Devices (Mac) you can save that backup or archive it. It will be date and time stamped. I have no idea why I do this to the degree that I do it, but I probably have 12-14 iPad backups archived in iTunes. -
I somehow set portrait lock on my iphone4, and then closed the app by double clicking the home button.
So now how to I access it again? Or do I have to completely restore my ph to factory settings?Double click the home button again, slide to the left and tap the screen lock button.

All my music was on prior to syncing. The sync deleted all my music. I can now no longer add any music. I have the "sync music" checked. Restoring factory settings did not work. Any thoughts?
When you synced with iTunes It would have tried to replace the music on the iPhone with what is on the computer. which is what happens when you sync with iTunes.
If the songs are purchased you can re-downloaded them Pretty easily. You mentioned that you still see the songs and that you could not play them. Do they have a Cloud symbol next to them? If so this means that you can download them but that they are not on the device. -
I found an iphone over one year ago. Its locked with a passcode. I kept waiting for the owner to call it. They never did. I went to an AT&T store today, they put a new sim card in it. and told me to go home, log on to itunes, and restore the phone to "factory settings".But itunes says the phone is locked and it needs the passcode to reset it to factory settings.
Any workaround? Or, am I doing something wrong here?
Thanks so much.
JoeSounds like you may be the owner of a new phone! If you don't need or want it and no one claims it you probably can sell it. Check eBay to see what the going rate is.
You are to be commended for at least trying to find the owner. Many wouldn't.
Best.

Resetting the 17" HP Envy to its factory settings
Hi Somehow after searching in the Internet how to reduce the slowleness of my machine, I got something that asked me to downloaded and so I did. No documents were lost, neither photos or videos saved. But all my softwares went away leaving me without any Macaffe word prosessor, no printer drive and so on including videos software I bought. Not being at home for some time to come, and not having with me the software materials with me , I can't retrive these lost items . I have tried to bring back the computer to earlier settings, but the earliest one offer is in fact the one that created all this nightmare to me. Should I try the resetting to the factory settings? If that is the case, how can I do it. And will I loose all my documents and photos etc? Best regards and have all my gratitud for any help. Zoraida
THIS PAGE is a guide on How to do the Recovery. There should be a prompt to save documents and phots before it actually does the Recovery.

The open window says, "Mav OS Install DVD" when I choose Disk Utilities. The options listed on left are: 250.06 GB Hitachi HTSS..., Mac OS X Install DVD, HT-DT-ST DVDRW G2 3N and Mac OS X Install DVD. How do I install the program on the hard drive? This computer was given to me by a friend and I was trying to restore it to factory settings. Thanks!!
You want to boot from the Install DVD and install OSX on the Hitachi drive.

How can I turn off the laptop after restoring it to factory settings?
Hello everyone
I am selling my Portege R830-10Q so I want to restore it to factory settings (out-of-box state) AND THEN TURN IT OFF.
I have successfully brought the laptop to factory settings by using the _TOSHIBA Recovery Wizard_ and choosing *Recovery of Factory Default Software (Recover to out-of-box state)*. However, at the end of the recovery process and after everything is re-installed I was not able to TURN OFF the laptop. I was only given the option of restarting it. After restating it, the Windows set-up process starts.
I don't want to set-up Windows, i.e. language, keyboard, user account, etc. I want to leave the Windows set-up for the person who buys the laptop from me. How can I switch off the laptop after the system recovery without having to set up Windows?
I'd really appreciate your help.
Regards
PedroWhen recovery procedure is finished and you are asked for restart just press power button and switch it off. I think it only thing you can do.
Anyway, why not to start Windows and go through setup option. New owner can change this basic settings anyway. As username put Admin and language and keyboard can be set as default.
For instance, if you have German recovery image set everything to German. New owner can change it anyway. -
I am having trouble setting up my new AirPort Extreme. I think I have it all hacked up. Can I push the reset button on the back of the unit and reset to the factory settings and start over?
this should help: Resetting an AirPort base station FAQ
What used to be called a "hard reset" on earlier models is now called a "factory default reset" on 802.11ac models, so things can get confusing. At least Apples seems to have updated the FAQ recently to reflect the changes with the new models.....if you dig deep enough. -
What is the default restrictions code win restoring factory settings on an iPhone 3gs
I am trying to restore the factory settings to I can give the phone to a family member, but when I try it is asking for a restrictions pass code.
I don't ever remember setting one.
Is there a default one that I need to enter?
What is it?Try 0000
I never set either passcode but Restrictions required one to get in so I tried a typical passcode that I might have used. It didn't work so I tried 0000 and it worked. -
I had spilled water in my backpack and my laptop was inside of my backpack too. Will resetting the computer reset the fan so it will fix the lagging?
If you have spilled water on your MBA, then an appointment at an Apple store should be made and have the technicians examine it. Then you will be in a position to know what to do next.

Steps to bring data and settings to OS X
We are a three Mac household and I have two on OS X and now want to bring the third, a G3 PB, into OS X on a steady basis. This machine originally shipped as a dual boot system. It currently has 9.2.2 and has been used heavily under this OS. It also has a newly updated 10.2.8. We want to move day-to-day usage ove rthe OS X side.
I am positive Apple has published a series of steps to be used in this situation as a check-off to migrate all user preferences, mail, addresses, bookmarks, data files, etc. Can someone direct me to a good reference?

That does happen. It depends on how hard the server is being hit, as well as the connection speed of your system. If you are on a windows system, you will want to disable any antivirus or firewall software during the download.
