Late in August 2011 I took delivery of a new 27" iMac with Lion preinstalled. I need to run Windows as well. Following Apple's written suggestion, I printed off the then current 12 pages of the document "Bootcamp Installation & Setup Guide" which clearly stated that the hard drive you were going to install on had to have on it, before install, a maximum of one partition. Using finder and disk utility I determined that there was only one partition. Unbeknownst to me, there was (is) an additional hidden (from those two pieces of software) partition on the disk. As of machines delivered new with Lion preinstalled, Apple has begun to include a "recovery partition". In that partition there is a copy of the software necessary to reinstall Lion via a download from the Apple App Store. Not knowing the partition was there, I cranked up "Bootcamp Assistant" which nicely offered to repartition my hard drive creating a "Bootcamp Partition" in addition to the existing. I told it how big to make each and hit the do it button, subsequently destroying my operating system. Oh, it very nicely told me, after the damage was done, how many partitions were REALLY on the disk and that I could not install Bootcamp cause there were too many partitions.
Luckily the the Recovery Partition, which at that point I knew existed, was not harmed and after doing some research on another compter, I used it to once again download Lion from the App Store and reinstall. So, I have recovered but am still stuck with the problem: how do I install Bootcamp in this new environment?First you need to seriously back up your Mac.
A clone is an exact duplicate of your existing Mac HDD. Merely copying and pasting a drive will not make a bootable backup. In case of problems you can boot from an Ext HDD clone and use the utilities to repair, reformat, or clone the Ext HDD back to the internal Mac HDD. While Time machine back ups are easy you can not boot from it. The best thing to have for any kind of problem is a bootable clone backup on an external drive. Some even have two external backup drives in case one fails. There are two good apps for cloning named SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner.
In dealing with the recovery partition a simple approach is to clone the Mac partition to an external disk then re-partition the Mac to a single partition (GUID partition table) . Then clone the external disk clone back to the Mac. You will now have only one Partition and Boot Camp assistant sould not object.
Some have recommended getting rid of the recovery partition while others have advised not to do this. If you have the Lion USB Thumb Drive you do not need a recovery partition so can discard it without concern. There is another way to get rid of the recovery partition if you decide to do it but first be sure to have a backup of your Mac ( I know I sound like a nagging mom but many dead computers have been saved by this simple precaution).
Use Disk Utility.
1) Make the Recovery visible in Disk Utility by using a program like Secrets:http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/27025/secrets or MacPilot:http://www.koingosw.com/products/macpilot.php (15 day free trial).
2) Highlite the Recovery partition and Control click it and select Mount the partition.
3) With the Recovery partition highlited, erase the partition, you'll get an error message, ignore it.
4) Now highlite the top identity of the hard drive and select the partition tab.
5) Highlite the Recovery partition and press the minus sign.
6) Click and hold on the bottom edge of the partition above and drag it to the bottom, if it doesn't go there automatically, the press apply. -
To make a very tedious story short, My Mac decided that it would crash and not reboot the OS. I decided to bite the bullet and just reformat, sacrificing my very important data. I have tried just about every trick in the book. There is one one major problem I am facing. When I try to reformat the internal HDD using Disk Utility. It fails to unmount. "Make sure that all applications and files are closed on this disk.", Suggesting that the computer is ignoring my command at startup to boot from my external recovery drive, and using the Recovery partition on the problem drive, making it impossible to reformat the drive. When the internal drive is removed and connected by another method it is not recognized.
I failed to read the fine print on the box that suggested I purchase another Mac to fix problems with my primary Mac because any utility with the potential to fix the problem can only be run on a functioning Mac.Booting to any version of the Recovery system, the built in partition on the internal drive, a recovery partition on an external drive or from the Online internet system will not stop you from formatting the Macintosh HD partition on the internal drive. So your problem is not that you are booting from the internal Recovery HD partition. It is probably your internal hard drive has problems, failing.
You could try booting the system from the Online system. At startup hold down the Option/Alt + Command + r keys and keep them held down until you see a globe on the screen. That will boot the system from across the internet from the Apple servers completely removing the internal drive as a boot source. If you still can't erase and format or repartition and format the internal drive then your drive has problems and will need to be replaced. -
Factory recovery partition on windows 8 in Asus X551CALaptop
I purchased Asus x551CA notebook on 22nd Feb 2014. After about 45 days I formated hard disk partition
on which Activated Windows 8 operating systme was installed.I formatted an repartitioned HDD.
And I installed and uninstalled windows8 and windows 8.1 90 days enterprise evaluation edition. Because of
these link to factory recovery partition is broken.
I have created system image disks which are working to restore system. I forgot how I created these disks. May be
I did control panel>recovery>file history>windows 7 file recovery. So these disks should be System Image Backup.
I think these are not OEM recovery disks. When I insert these disks during reset and refresh I get a message
that "Media you inserted is not valid". And I am able to create system image on second partition of hard disk of
my laptop.I have also got product key of windows 8 by a program jellybean keyfinder.
To restore from discs created by me. I insert a repair disc then I go to UEFI settings. Then I change boot preferences to
boot from DVD. Then I go to Restore form images. Then computer asks me to insert my discs no from 1 to 4. One after the other. Then computer restore to windows 8. It looks alike as it was factory made.
-When I try to create a recovery drive by going to control panel> Recovery >create a recovery drive
Recovery drive dialog box appears but with grayed check box of "copy the recovery partition from PC
to the recovery drive". Please tell me how can it come with not grayed dialog box so that I can copy
recovery partition to USB pen drive? When notebook was new this check box was not grayed and I was able to
copy recovery partition on USB pen drive.
-Since I cannot copy recovery partition to USB therefore I also cannot reset and refresh windows 8 on
the basis of USB. It was working when notebook was new.
-And reset or refresh also not working on the basis of hidden recovery partition. How can it will start
working? It was working when notebook was new.
-I have tried diskpart command do make hidden recovery partition visible. But it becomes invisible
after restart. I used following command
1. Command Prompt Run as administer.
2. diskpart
3. list disk
4. select disk 0
5. list partition
6. select partition 6
7. assign letter z
by these commands hidden recovery partition becomes visible and again when I restart laptop it becomes invisible.
And I am not able to do anything with recovery partition E.G. copy the recovery partition to USB
When I created a system image using the following command I became able to refresh my PC. May be it was refreshing
on the basis of newly created image.
recimg /createimage D:\IMAGE81
recimg /setcurrent D:\IMAGE81
But it is also not working this time and it gives a message "Drive on which windows is installed is locked unlock it".
May because I installe AVG antivirus it locked the drive.
I also used REAgentC command
reagentc /setreimage /path F:\Recovery\WindowsRE\ /target C:\Windows /bootkey 4300
Maybe I executed above command once again I used D: instead of F:
And I was able to refresh PC but I was not able to Reset. And I was not able to copy recovery partition on USB
by going to control panel> Recovery >create a recovery drive.

((I am giving images of computer management in first_image no partition was created it was in factory made state. And
in second_Image I created an extra disk partition which is present on disk this time.)) I cannot give images because

in the beginnig instead of D: (130 GB) and F:(128 GB) there was only one partition D:(258 GB) 130+128 GB.
Please tell me answers of following quesions:-
1. Tell me how to regain the link to factory recovery drive.
2. Please tell me how can I refresh and reset PC on the basis of Hidden Factory Recovery Partition. And how can I copy Hidden Factory Recovery Partition on USB and DVDs. I have 16GB USB pen drive and a DVD writer. So I can use these two storage media
only and except these I have 500GB HDD on my laptop.
4. I want to know that Factory recovery partition is useful or not. Should I delete it.
3. I have DVDs as I said above. On the basis of these I can reinstall windows 8. When I created these discs windows 8 was present on laptop. Currently windows 8.1 is present on laptop. Please tell me how can I create my own hidden recovery partition for
windows 8. I have upgraded to windows 8.1. So please tell me can I create my own hidden recovey partition for windows 8.1.
5. Can I download contents of factory recovery partition from internet.
6. Should I go to shopkeeper. He repairs computers as well. Probably he will manage for me to get Recovery partition discs. In this case these DVDs may be different from my DVDs as I mentioned above. Maybe only thing I get from these discs that I will
able to reset and refresh computer.
7. Microsoft shoult create a program that can re-establish link to factory recovery partition. And this program should be able to create new hidden recovery partition as well. As I have upgraded to windows 8.1. So I think I should have a new hidden recovery partition
for Windows 8.1. I think I can above thing my other way. If I create new set of DVDs by going to control panel>recovery> file history>System Image Backup. It will create discs for windows 8.1. And I will able to restore system to windows
8.1 by these discs. And for windows 8 I have already discs. But these discs will only work by changing boot options(by choosing UEFI) and image recovery. And reset and refresh functions will not work then in such situation factory recovery partition
will become useless. Then such situation I should delete factory recovery partition as it is useless.
8. At beginnign I also tried AI recovery burner. After trying it for 2-3 days I came to know that AI recovery burner is not for windows 8. There should be a tutorial for these thing so that people like me not waste their time.I used a software named UNDELETE on my hidden recovery partition to recover it. I get some files by this software. Important thing is that I got a 2.84 GB file named 00eebc9d.rb in dir D:\recovered1\Files Detected by their Signatures\Unknown Application\.rb.
This file may be useful. Please suggest me how can I use these files to reset and refresh my OS. I used some dir commands as follows to get list of these files:
dir /s >f:\list.txt
dir /s /a:s >f:\list2.txt
Some files were system files so these file were not shown by first dir command. So I used second dir command.

Restore recovery partition from disc
hello,
i have bought hp pavilion dv6 6169ee from 2 days ago and after i bought it i installed the windows and everything was perfect then i tried to make partition shrank after that the system recovery didn't work and someone told me that i should make back up to my recovery on DVD so i have bought 4 dvds and made the back up and then i made recovery via the dvd disc but unfortunately it deleted everything including my recovery partition and my new partitions also
so i want to know how i can restore my recovery partition again from my recovery disk or how i can reverse the burn recovery of my dvds to normal data as it was
and what type of recovery does not format all your partitions cause i have tried minimized image option and it deleted everything also
thanks,can anyone tell me what program should i use to unpack the 4 DVDS to recovery partition?

Keeping recovery partition hidden for later use
Hello all,
I have HP Envy M6-n012dx and it's got pre-installed Windows 8. I see the recovery partition is named D: in my PC (and I don't know why it needs to be shown in my PC as it could easily be messed up). I shrank my C drive and made two extra partitions E and F. What I would like to do now is to remove the drive letter from recovery partition and rename my E and F drives to D and E respectively.
This way my recovery partition would be hidden. Later on, if I want to fully reset my PC through recovery I will assign a drive letter to this recovery partiton. Will it work this way or I'll just ruin my recovery? Actually I don't want to perform a test on it as it would ruin my recovery. Also, I don't want to make recovery DVDs/USB out of it as I want it to be preseved in my laptop. Any help would be appreciated. I just find out that the HD recovery partition went missing in my MBP Early 2011 ML 10.8.5. I don't know when it exactly happened, but my guess is that it was after removing a Bootcamp partition. In any case, I have Time Capsule backups since both the Bootcamp and HD Recovery partitions were in my MBP. However, I'm not sure if the right solution is to restore my Mac to such old days. I tried reinstalling ML by using the Internet Recovery feature (pressing command+R after restarting the computer), but it was Lion, not Mountain Lion, the option that I was given. Therefore, it was not possible to complete the process. I have read on the Internet solutions that involved using scripts written by other users, but I'm not a computer savvy so I don't feel confident following such instructions. I should also mention that I tried to use OS X Recovery Disk Assistant v1.0, but it didn 't work precisely because I have no Recovery HD in my MBP. Try using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.5.2. However, you want to be sure you allow it to update to 3.5.3b2. It may be able to create a Recovery HD partition without requiring one already be installed on your computer.

Hello!
I purchased an SSD hard drive to replace the old hard drive. The SSD is now the C: with operation system and D: (actual work files) partition from size 50~50% of the total disk space. The totally formatted old hard drive is the E: (archive files) part.
I want to use the recovery, but the lenovo's default recovery partition is missing. Can I create one somehow?

HT4718 Can't access my EXISTING OSX 10.8.1 Recovery Partition
This computer is a non-retina mid-2012 MacBook Pro.
Using DiskUtil in Terminal shows the correct disk configuration:

However, booting up with Cmd-R just goes to the Internet Recovery, and booting up with Option Key shows 2 identical Macintosh HD icons - selecting either one boots the system regularly from the Macintosh HD; no Recovery Partition shows up. I had two eligible computers and the first one was updated directly from the App Store; this one was done with a bootable USB drive.
35 years into the "microcomputer revolution" I really hope that someone can suggest a solution other than "reinstall the operating system." Not that I don't appreciate help, but this should be fixable with a less drastic solution. The parition is there, something needs to be told to recognize it. Also, I don't know that reinstalling will produce any different results, although reinstalling directly from the App Store might "turn on" whatever is "turned off."
Thank you.This is completely normal. By booting OS X Recovery you are accessing the Recovery partition.
The Recovery partition is normally hidden, since it is intended to be for "emergency use only". As a longtime computer user, this may understandably annoy you, but there really is nothing you ought to do with it.
Reinstalling the OS won't help since it will just recreate the recovery partion, even if you reformat or completely replace the drive.
You may see suggestions from users from time to time to reinstall OS X. This scatter-shot approach is almost never justified on a Mac, since most problems are due to conflicting or poorly written third party software unrelated to the OS, and a reinstallation won't help.
Replacing a failed hard disk is one valid reason to reinstall OS X. It's difficult to come up with any others.
See the diskutil manpages to determine how to mount the recovery partition so that you may examine its contents (which are read-only). You'll then be able to get yourself into all sorts of trouble.
This excerpt from the Lion Ars Technica review may save you the time:
Doing so reveals the partition as a normal HFS+ volume. The top level contains a directory named com.apple.recovery.boot which in turn contains a few small files related to booting along with an invisible 430MB internally compressed disk image file named BaseSystem.dmg. Mount that disk image and you find a 1.52GB bootable Mac OS X volume containing Safari, most of the contents of the standard /Applications/Utilities folder (Disk Utility, Startup Disk, Terminal, etc.), plus a Mac OS X Lion installer application. In other words, it looks a lot like a standard Mac OS X installer DVD.
That was the idea - to eliminate the need for a system recovery DVD.
As you can see the recovery partition probably won't have much to interest you anyway.
To get a better impression of how all this works (N.B. the following is NOT for the faint-hearted):
Clone your system to an external volume
Boot from the external volume
Completely erase your internal HD, removing all existing partitions
Unplug your external volume and boot OS X Recovery
Reinstall OS X -
I have a hp probook 4510s with widows 7 premium and recently i attempted to restore my computer to factory settings but when i load the boot menu after pushing f11 or f8 it loads files then ask me to chose my country then ask if I'm sure i want to reinstall windows i say yes then it ask if i have a disc i say no then a error message pops up saying

i have use my recovery partition in the past so I don't know what's wrong. this is how my partitions are set up.
if it helps, before i learn that you can't have no more than 4 primay partitions on windows 7 at the time i didn't know and made a fith one which turn all my partitions into dynamic Partitions but i later delete one and use a software that converts them back to primary with ot affecting the data on it. everything in the partitions are still their as far as i know. please i just want my recovery Partition working again!Your Recovery partition has no drive letter (it should be D), is a Logical drive (should be a Primary) and is part of an Extended partition. If you can use something to correct all of that it may work again.

Recovery Partition redundant in Windows 10?
Hi, I have an Acer V3-371 and I have just upgraded it to Windows 10 and it all works fine. I have created a Recovery Drive on a 32Gb USB pen drive and I also regularly copy the full c:\drive onto a USB WD Elements Backup HDD.
I would now like to delete the 15.25 Healthy (Recovery Partition) on Disk 0 because I believe it to now be redundant, and to use the newly available space to expand the space on the c:\drive by a further 15.25Gb.
I am not experienced at working with drive partitions, please can anyone tell me if the MiniTool Partition Free Tool is suitable for this purpose? Also, does anyone see any flaws in what I am trying to do, or if there are any extra steps that I have overlooked?
All advice will be greatly appreciated.
David PriestThanks IronFly, things have now moved on and I done it slightly different, I purchased a copy of Paragon Partition Manager 15 Home and deleted the Recovery Partition and added the space to my c:\ drive. At first sight everything appears perfect, I do have a larger c:\ drive, however I now have a different problem, when I attempt to make a fresh recovery drive on my USB pen drive, I get the following error message "We can't create a recovery drive on this PC. Some required files are missing. To troubleshoot problems when your PC can't start. use your Windows installation disc or media"
Because I done a Windows 10 upgrade, I do not have an installation disc and think that I may now have to download an ISO download and do a full re-install?
Unless anyone else has any better ideas?Thanks again

Restore hp recovery partition in win 7 on hp envy 17-3277
just bought hp envy 17-3277nr.
made recovery dvds
got an ssd and installed it in the first hd slot and moved the original hd to the second slot.
i want to install win 7 on the ssd and create hp recovery partition on the 2nd hd
both drives were formatted so i lost the original recovery partition
everytime i use the recovery dvds, win 7 does install to the ssd but no recovery partition is created on either drive
it did create an hp_tools partition on the ssd, about 100mb, but its empty.
any suggestions?

How large is the SSD and the original hard drive?
If you boot into Windows and use Disk Management how many partitions are listed? Do you mind listing them here?
If you have the recovery discs you really do not have the have the partition but I can understand why you'd want. I will keep an eye out for your response so that I can assist you in figuring this out once I have more information.

Can I use the HP Recovery partition after formatting and repartitioning the rest of the hard drive?
I recently had my HP Pavilion dv4 2145dx laptop (Windows 7 64-bit) go kerput. The Geek Squad said that the motherboard died. I've purchased another laptop, and I'm using that one for now, and I am using the hard drive from the old dv4 as an external.
I'm planning to keep using the hard drive from the old dv4 as an external for now, but I'd like to be able to fix the dv4 at some point in the future. Here's the problem: to get the most out of the old dv4's drive as an external, I'd like to repartition it so that there is one NTFS partition and one HFS+ partition. That way I could use it easily with both my Mac and Windows machines.
But if I do that, I'm not sure if the HP Recovery image would still work. If it didn't work, then if/when I get the old dv4 a new motherboard, I couldn't restore the OS from the Recovery partition. This is a problem, because I didn't create Recovery Disks (stupid, I know - I'm definitely making them for the new machine).
So I'd like to do one of these two things:
1) Create my dv4 Recovery Disks. Can I do this if the dv4's drive is mounted in an external enclosure?
2) Format and partition the dv4 drive (leaving the Recovery partition intact), and later recover the system from the Recovery partition. Would the Recovery partition still work under those conditions?

Anything you do to the C:\drive will render the recovery partition inoperable.
You won't be able to create a set of recovery disks unless the drive is operable in the notebook.
Can you still read all 25 characters of your W7 product key on the bottom of your busted notebook?
If so, you can do this...
If you can read the 25 character Microsoft windows 7 product key, you can download plain Windows 7 ISO files to burn to a DVD for the version of windows that came installed on your PC, and that is listed on the Microsoft COA sticker on your PC's case.
Burn the ISO using the Burn ISO option on your DVD burning program and burn at the slowest possible speed your program will allow. This will create a bootable DVD.
Or use the Windows 7 USB/DVD installation tool to compile the ISO file you download from Digital River. Link and instructions below. You need a 4 GB flash drive to use the USB method of compilation.

Use the 25 character product key on the PC to activate the installation.
The key will activate either a 32 or 64 bit installation.
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.

My Mac Mini (2011 - Mountain Lion) died on me and I'm trying to get Internet Recovery (or ANY recovery) to work. I have done the hold down D on boot hardware test and the extensive test and it says all is well. However Internet Recovery downloads (or appears to) and then I just get a never-ending spinning wheel and Apple logo.
I just installed Lion 10.7 from my older Mini that can't run Mountain Lion onto the newer Mini's hard drive as an external disk. How can I get the recovery partition added to that disk too?Google recovery disk assistant. Hopefully that'll be what you need.

I've been stuck for some hours now trying different things to install Windows 7 on my Macbook Air, and I think now is the time to call for some custom help.
I'm using OS X 10.9.5 Mavericks.
So some months ago I just wanted to run Linux on my laptop so I installed rEFInd, shrunk the Macintosh HD partition by 25GB and booted on a linux live USB flash I burned using dd.
Then I used gparted to create my linux partitions.
It worked just fine, even though disk utility from OS X seemed quite unhappy about this (it seemed to have incorrect informations about the filesystem on these partitions, seeing them as journaled Mac OS while they were clearly not). At this point already, the Recovery HD from mac showed up in disk utility, which I found weird but didn't bother me.
But recently I needed windows on my Mac. So after a few tries for the triple boot, I managed to create a bootable USB stick with boot camp, which already showed me the message "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition" and hence refused to partition/install himself.
So I thought "OK, that's no big issue, I can just partition with disk utility and then boot on the USB stick and everything will work fine". But when EFI booting on the USB flash drive I got stuck at the beginning of Windows installer with no keyboard or mouse support.
After some hours spent googling, I was unable to find a working fix for that, and as there was no support for my case (where I used bootcamp to create the bootable flash but NOT to partition/reboot) I decided to give bootcamp a try.
So I erased my linux partitions, and cleaned up everything I could on the HD with disk utility. That means I now have two partitions showing in disk utility : Macintosh HD and Recovery HD.
When using disk utility from terminal, the list is :
/dev/disk0

0: GUID_partition_scheme *121.3 GB disk0
1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1

So, as I don't understand what is wrong here anymore, any help would be greatly appreciated!

I wish the best threads were voted to the top of forums, something! Me, I literally burned out here, but after installing 10 Preview, wanted to "see what was going on" after hiatus of a couple years and see if anything had changed (no, not really!)
Also, these new Communities are not putting "more like this" and failing to help too.
I think rewriting Boot Camp Assistant's built in help and pdf would help a lot, and needs to be clearer and go into details. And Yosemite was not it seems tested against Boot Camp, and drivers for new Macs + new OS also lag behind. Again, common and no sign of improvement or change.
One of the tricks to the "can't partition" is rather simple - of course backup is step #1 and is spelled out - SHRINK the main HFS+ partition! then stretch it back to full length. Sometimes a reboot is needed, and sometimes even do a Safe Boot - not sure what but Recovry Mode might be a good option too. That does seem to consolidate free space, move files that are locked and cannot be moved otherwise, and allow BCA to partition, jusst be sure to have enough space left and large enough for a proper Windows install (and fudge factor).
