The Consequences of putting a tablespace into Hot Backup mode--Link to Doc

http://www.dizwell.com/prod/node/10
This article will help beginners who want to know what exactly happens when the Tablespace is put in Backup mode

Good point.
If we only know Enterprise Manager, we will be stuck when confronted with a telnet session. In like manner, if we only know RMAN, we will never know half of why it is so useful and efficient.
Besides which, there is a lot of use for manual recovery techniques, even in a world of RMAN doing all the backups, so knowing the entire backup/recovery universe is a Good Thing.

  • I put my macbook into target disk mode and now it won't start up in regular mode

    I put my macbook into target disk mode and now it won't start up in OSX. I have used my install disk and repaired the drive. I have held down the option key to choose the system. I have tried to start in safe mode with same result. The apple screen appears, but the gear just keeps turning. I can get it back into target disk mode by connecting it by firewaire to my macbook pro. It will start up in Windows when I choose that system. What can I do to get it to start up with OSX?
    Thanks for your help.

    Try this from MacFixIt as well:
    In the case of drive directory damage or problems with permissions, the solution is usually to use Apple's Disk Utility to repair the disk. Of course, you won't be able to perform this operation normally (simply launching the Disk Utility application, located in Applications/Utilities, and initiating a disk repair) if your system will not startup. So two options exist:
    * Insert your Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) media (DVD or CD) and restart the computer while holding down the "C" key. Once the computer has booted from the installation disc, select "Utilities" from the menubar and open Disk Utility. Repair the disk, then quit Disk Utility and restart your system.
    * Alternatively, you can repair the disk while booted in single user mode if you do not have access to a retail Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) DVD/CD. To startup in single user mode, hold down the "Command" and "S" keys simultaneously at startup. Once properly booted, type the command fsck at the prompt. Repeat these process until no errors appear.

  • Time Machine crashes whenever the computer goes to sleep or into screen saver mode.

    Apologies if there is an obvious answer or post about this.  Every time I try to initialize Time Machine, it will begin backing up until the computer goes to sleep or the screen saver kicks in.  When I wake the computer up, I get a message that says "The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk."  The message also tells me that the problem might be temporary and to try Disk Utility to repair the backup disk if the problem persists.
    When I run Disk Utility, I am told that the volume cannot be repaired and that it needs to be reformatted.  I reformat the disk, try to run Time Machine again, and get the same problem whenever the computer goes to sleep or into screen saver mode.  Lather, rinse, repeat.
    I managed to get an initial backup only if I turned off the screen saver and the sleep function.  However, once I turned them back on, I ran into the same problem when Time Machine tried to update the backup.
    I am running OS X v.10.6.8 on an iMac5,1.  The backup is a Toshiba 1TB USB external HD. I saw this same problem posted in the Lion forum (and I cribbed the title of this post from there).  Nobody has offered a solution yet, but it was a very recent post.
    Thanks in advance.

    Oh yeah I forgot to say I use an ETHERNET connection.

    Dear Experts,

    Aman, hot backup with RMAN is more preferable as compare to alter tablespace begin backup...... command.
    Why ?
    and if so why we still using OS commands to take backup;

    :)You have the answers to your other questions. As to "why we still using OS commands to take backup"? Well, um..... ;-) You'd have to ask you're organization that question. I can tell you there is no defensible reason to do so ..... ;-)

  • Blocking session in hot backup mode?

    In 8.1.7.4 Some time While in hot backup mode, blocking session occuring by checkpoint session background process. Can we issue the alter system checkpoint command in this
    Situation ? how to handle this?

    best way is to try and see but checkpointing frequently wont help in my opinion, a better workaround may be ensuring you only place one tablepspace at a time in backup mode and bring the tablespace out of backup mode as soon as you have backed it up.

  • GUIDE: How to put your iPhone into Recovery/DFU Mode

    As most iPhone owners will be aware, you can reset your device by holding down both the home button and sleep/wake button together until the device reboots. This will cure the majority of crashes and issues.
    However, there may also be occasions where the phone goes seriously wrong and may appear to be 'dead'. Not everybody is aware that there is a second method which can be used to bring a phone back to life when all else seems lost. Consider it a 'last resort' if you like!
    The second method involves putting the phone into recovery, or DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode. Putting the phone into recovery mode lets iTunes know that it needs to perform a full restore on the handset. Here's how to do it:
    1. Ensure that the iPhone is OFF before starting.
    2. On your computer, open iTunes.
    3. Connect your iPhone to your computer using the USB cable.
    4. Hold down the SLEEP/WAKE Button and the HOME button together.
    5. After 10 seconds, let go of the SLEEP/WAKE button (keep the home button held down).
    6. Keep holding the HOME button until iTunes displays a message saying that it has detected a phone in recovery mode.
    You will then be prompted to restore the phone using iTunes. Follow the on screen instructions and your iPhone will be restored.
    You may also have the option to restore your iPhone from a backup, but I would not advise doing this if you think that an app may have caused your device to go wrong in the first place.
    The above method can also be used to get around forgotten PIN numbers. I've used it to restore several of our company handsets when people have handed their phones back in but forgotten to provide their PINs!
    I hope this helps. If anyone reading this needs a hand, just drop me a message and I'll be happy to talk you through it

    Last one I did asked me to log in with original apple ID after I'd restored the firmware.Weird? The only thing I can think of is that the staff who had the iPhones didn't use an Apple ID, but then they must have done as they would have needed to have downloaded a couple of apps for work! We'll call it an 'anomaly'..

  • HT201304 Kindle Amazon app store has an app called childs place. It's a parental control app that allows the parent to put only apps into it for childrens access & requires a password to get out of. Anyone know if there is a similar app in the Apple app s

    Kindle App Store has an app names Child's Place. It lets you add only the apps you want your child to access and requires a passcode to exit it. That way your child cannot access any other content except what you have allowed in this particular app. Does anyone know if Apple App store has anything comparable? I know you can set up restrictions in settings but this is different.
    Thanks

    Sorry but no, that is not possible in iOS. Other than what is offered in the Restrictions, there is no way to lock apps in general unless the app itself has a password feature. You can in iOS 6 lock the iPad into a single app, but that's your only option.
    It's a tradeoff; apps can't affect each other except in very restrictive ways in iOS which makes such features from third parties impossible, but it also renders getting malware infecting your iOS device extremely unlikely, something not the case with Android-based devices.

  • Can't put IE Metro into full kiosk mode Win 8.1 Enterprise or set IE desktop as default in Assigned Access

    I have searched everywhere for this answer.  Kiosk mode/assigned access is excellent.  But it appears that you can only use IE Modern (Metro) for assigned access and the problem with that is I have found no way to completely lock down IE Modern.
    I can only partially lock it down but users can still get to the address bar and settings very easily.
    I either need some advice on setting IE to complete lockdown or how to set IE desktop for Assigned  Access.

    I am afraid there is no such feature in metro IE. Maybe you could submit a feedback to
    IE connect

    Hi,

My doubt is if the redolog is archieved will the database applies the entries from archived log on the headers after end backup mode of tablespace??? Putting a tablespace INTO hot backup mode does indeed cause a checkpoint to take place for that tablespace. But when the tablespace is out of hot backup mode does NOT. The SCNs in the headers of that tablespace will re-synchronize next time there is a system-wide checkpoint, but not until then.

    Please help how we can reduce the backup time and also please throw some light on these checkpoint related messages.

    Hi Jonathon ,
    Thanks for your valuable suggestion.
    Here in our environment all the tablespaces go into hot backup mode at a time instead of one by one through a script.
    Previously when the hot backup used to work fine the number of incremental checkpoints between begin backup and end backup were significantly less. It is also evident from the excerpt of the alert log file.

  • How SCN sync after the tablespace is put back to END Backup mode

    When we put the tablespace in begin backup mode, the scn get forzen and it will not be further updated, until it is put back to end backup.
    Question is : If at the time of being backup , say the snc forzed at 45. Before we put back the tablespace to end back up , we had genrerated 10 SCN. Then the current scn is 55. If we put the tablespace in end backup , does the datafile will start with scn 56 ( by maintaint it previous scn at 45)
    Or after we put back the tsp in end back up , does the datafile will be updated from 46 to 55 , before it is updated with scn 56.
    In the above example i am considering by db has one datafile only.
    Thanks
    Naveen

    Are you implying that the "Checkpoint number" is a different series of numbers --
    seperate from SCNs ?
    Are you implying that when a checkpoint occurs it is this "Checkpoint number"
    that is incremented and written to the datafile headers ?
    There really is no such thing as a "Checkpoint number".
    If you look at the definitions of V$DATABASE , V$DATAFILE and V$DATAFILE_HEADER, you would see that a Checkpoint increments the SCN.
    A header can have multiple entries -- a Checkpoint SCN (called CHECKPOINT_CHANGE#) , ArchiveLog SCN (called ARCHIVELOG_CHANGE#),
    the Current SCN (called CURRENT_SCN), SCN of last Unrecoverable (Nologging)
    (called UNRECOVERABLE_CHANGE#) etc etc. They are all derived from SCNs
    only.
    The SCN is used as the single point of reference. Thus, we can compare
    CHECKPOINT_CHANGE# with CURRENT_SCN with UNRECOVERABLE_CHANGE# etc.

    Error 1 is a very bad Hardware Error of the Baseband Chip. There is no fix. If you have Warranty or AppleCare Coverage, make Genius Reservation and take iPhone to Apple for resolution.

  • Where is the official Oracle documentation that describes Hot Backup?

    I have used the woefully inadequate Metalink search utilities and Google but the nearest thing I have found is a description on "Ask Tom".
    I am looking for the official Oracle documentation that describes what happens internally during a Hot Backup. There are a lot of web sites and blogs out there that describe it but I am looking for the description from Oracle themselves. The only things I have found in the Oracle documentation so far is how to start and stop Hot Backup but not what happens internally. Preferably 11gR2 if it makes any difference.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks mseberg. This is what I was looking for. I had read this manual before but apparently glossed over this paragraph:
    "When performing a user-managed online backup, you must place your datafiles into
    backup mode with the ALTER DATABASE or ALTER TABLESPACE statement with the
    BEGIN BACKUP clause. When a tablespace is in backup mode, the database writes the
    before image for an entire block to the redo stream before modifying a block. The
    database also records changes to the block in the online redo log. Backup mode also
    freezes the data file checkpoint until the file is removed from backup mode. Oracle
    Database performs this safeguard because it cannot guarantee that a third-party
    backup tool copies the file header before copying the data blocks."
    Hot backup is still quite useful and Rman doesn't cover all cases. What we are doing with it is using storage-based replication (Shadow Image) to another set of LUNS which we then mount on another server and backup using Rman. This removes the overhead of Rman on the Production Database server and extends our backup window to almost 24 hours.

  • How to take a Hot backup of Oracle database

    1: put the db in archive log mode
    2: set the db_sid to correct one
    3: login to sqlplus
    4: verify the name of the db that you are connected to
    select name from v$database;
    5: check if the db is in archive log made
    select log_mode from v$database;
    if not in archive log mode
    another command to check
    archive log list;
    6: find where on disk oracle writes archive log when it is in archive log mode
    sql> show parameter log_archive_dest_1;
    if the value is found to be 0, that means no values will be recorded, so we need to change it
    sql> alter system set log_archive_dest_1='LOCATION=c:\database\oradata\finance\archived_logs\'
    scope=spfile;
    7: shutdown immediate; < this is done just to prepare the db for hot backups >
    8: startup the db in mount mode
    startup mount;
    ( 3 startup types : nomount - just starts the instance, mount - locates the control files and open up according to the values, open - finds the datafiles from the control files and opens up the db )
    9: put the db in archive log mode
    alter database archivelog;
    10: open the database
    alter database open;
    11: check the status of the db
    select log_mode from v$database;
    SQL> archive log list;
    12: create a directory for archived log
    check if its empty, if empty we need to switch
    sql> alter system archive log current;
    run it 5 times < need to put / and enter > , then check the archive log dir , we will find files
    13: make a table in the database and insert data in it
    create table employees (fname varchar(2));
    check the table
    desc employees;
    insert values
    insert into employees values ('Mica');
    14: tablespace must be in hot backup mode
    check the status
    select * from v$backup;
    if found not active, then we need to change
    we cannot put the db in hot backup mode, unless it is archive log mode
    change to hot backup mode
    alter database begin backup;
    check the status
    select * from v$backup;
    15: now we can only COPY DBF FILES
    copy *dbf <distination location>
    16: need to take the db out to hot backup mode
    alter database end backup;
    17: need to make another archive log switch
    alter system archive log current;
    18: need to copy control files now, need to do a binary bckup
    alter database backup controlfile to '<location>\controlbackup';
    19: insert more values to the table
    insert into employess values ('NASH')
    COMMIT;
    make another archive log switch : alter system archive log current;
    do the same process for more values
    20 : backup all the archive logs to a new location
    21: shutdown the db and simulate a hw error, delete all the files from the database folder
    22: try to start the sqlplus and db ::: error
    23: copy all the backups to the db dir
    need to copy the control files, rename the binary backup of the control file and make the copies as needed
    24: try to mount the db, error < must use reset logs or noreset logs >
    25: need to do a recovering of the database
    shutdown
    restore the archive logs
    startup mount;
    recover database until cancel using backup controlfile;
    it will ask for a log file :
    yes for recovery
    cancel for cancelling recovery
    26: check status: open the database in readonly
    alter database open read only;
    check the tables to see the data
    shutdown immediate
    shartup mount;
    recover again : recover database until cancel using backup controlfile;
    if oracle is asking for a log that do nto exist , all we have to do is type cancel
    27: open the database
    alter database open;
    need to do reset logs
    alter database open resetlogs;
    28: check the db that you are connected, check the tables
    thanks and regards

    A very long list ... let me make it shorter.
    SQL> archive log list;If I see this:
    Database log mode              No Archive ModeI put the database into archivelog mode and leave it there forever.
    If it is in archivelog mode:
    RMAN> TARGET SYS/<password>@<service_name> NOCATALOG
    RMAN> BACKUP DATABASE PLUS ARCHIVELOG;Though there are a lot of things one could do better such as incrementals with block change tracking, creating an RMAN catalog, etc.
