The Curious Case of Purloined Preferences

Hi All ~ Serached 30 pages and didn't find this topic. Since I've gotten this iMac (with Safari 4.02) and I go to Menu Bar > Safari > Preferences to change said Preferences, the ONLY window that pops up is the Auto Fill window. No tabs of any kind, no additional options, no Security, nada. Where are my Preferences? Do I have to re-install? I see there's an option to "Reset Safari" but none of those sound like they're what I want.

Hi,
That's usually caused by a corrupt preferences file. Try quitting Safari completely (Safari menu > Quit) and then move this file to your Desktop:
Hard drive > Users > Your Username > Library > Preferences > com.apple.Safari.plist
Restart Safari and check the Preferences window again. If that does the trick, feel free to remove the file you placed on the Desktop.
Edit: Or, if you can see it in the Preferences window, click the pill shaped icon on the top right hand corner.

On one of our servers (sadly, the production one), this is
erroring when
var1 is an empty string (which is a valid situation to
occur). Rather
curiously, the SQL being spat out by the error message is
this:

Note how the first param is *completely gone*. The SQL should
simply be
passing through the empty string as the parameter, but the
parameter
"anchor" should still be there. Indeed this is exactly what
happens on my
local PC, and on our shared dev environment.
Unfortunately the erroring server is not so easy for me to
access due to a
new "non-invasive" policy the client has, so it's going to be
tricky for me
to experiment by way of trying to work out "WTF?".
Has anyone encountered this sort of thing, and know what I
should be
looking to do to sort it out?

I'm not
asking for advice how to mask the problem - that's easy
enough - I'm asking
what's *causing* the problem.

The curious case of the phantom network

In my never ending efforts to resolve my problem where World of Warcraft crases my macbook pro, I took the suggestion of a Blizzard Rep and disabled the wireless feature of my router.
After Disabling "Wireless SSID Broadcast" on my routers local webpage, I confirmed that the transmission was indeed off by searching for the name of my router in system preferences.
I just walked into my house and to my surprise my iPhone is on Wi-fi instead of staying on 3G when no wi-fi is present. I checked to see if it was picking up some unlocked router but lo and behold it was MY router.
I went back into the router and confirmed that wireless transmission was disabled. And as before, my Macbook Pro can't locate it either. Why in the world is my iPhone on a signal which I had disabled and that no other computer (including my roommates) can locate except for the iPhone?

There may be some terminology confusion. There are 2 settings in the wireless router -
Turn off wireless
Turn off SSID broadcast
Turning off the SSID broadcast does not disable wireless. Not all wireless routers have a setting to disable the wireless aspect. If you don't want it, then get a router without wireless.
I am not sure what this has to do with your WoW connection at all, but if the desktop is not using the wireless, why can't the iPhone? You could always set a password and enable WPA, but that won't turn off wireless.
One last thing, if your router does actually have a switch to turn off the wireless transceiver, maybe your iphone is connected to a neighbor with the same SSID? You could always change the SSID, that would also stop the iPhone from associating with the router, but Encryption is the best way to keep everyone off the wireless link.

The curious case of the disappearing Blue Cells (and other things) in I.P.

Hello everyone!
Lately, I have noticed a strange occurrence in the BI-IP functionality in one of the systems that I work on. No matter how we set the system, we can never make input-ready capabilities return for normal use. That is, we can not seem to make the blue cells return in the query!
Since we can no longer male the input capability return, we also cannot Save the data in the queries. This is extremely odd, as I have never encountered anything of the sort.
Whatu2019s more, we constantly get the same message that occur again and again: u201CThis is a sample.u201D
Can experts from our community share their thoughts and inputs on this strange occurrence about the missing blue cells and this strange message.
Iu2019m pretty certain that there are some things that are amiss. Perhaps someone can direct me to the right course of action. Is there something that we should set or configure further?

HP Print Queue: The Curious Case of the Disappearing Files

Hey all,
Has anyone encountered this problem, and if so, how did you fix it?
My Illustrator CS5 docs go into the print queue and disappear without printing.
It happens with both of the printers here at work that I'm connected to: an HP Color LaserJet CM6040 MFP and an HP Color LaserJet 5500 dtn. I just ran into this problem today at work, so I haven't yet troubleshooted (troubleshot?) with my HP printers at home (although I wouldn't be surprised to see the same behavior).
On my MBP I'm running OS 10.6.4 (just updated from 10.5.8 over the weekend), Illustrator CS5. Other kinds of files print normally: Word, Entourage, Illustrator CS4, InDesign and Photoshop CS5, Acrobat Pro 9.
I'm at a loss as to what to do next. Any advice to help me solve this problem will be appreciated.

Same problem, no fix yet.
I have the same symptoms with my networked HP LaserJet 4100DTN, trying to print from my Macbook Pro running 10.5.8. I think I narrowed it down to an Adobe problem. A PDF open in Adobe Reader will give me a problem, but print the same thing from Preview, and it prints okay.
Even though the job disappears from the queue when printing from Adobe, the system console shows it completing okay:

The curious case of Infinity 1 and high usage - a ...

Please help! My Mum recently took out the 20GB Infinity 1 package, along with a new HH5. Since then her broadband usage has gone through the roof - previously using around 1-2 GB per month - now its around 60-70GB or more. They confirmed that HER usage was very low although there were other devices on the hub (even though BT changed the wireless key around 4 weeks earlier) – nobody was given the new key. Last week BT advised we change the wireless key AND the hub password - we have done both. However, since then there has been another 17GB of usage. She has been charged for exceeding her limit, even though she is not using the broadband. Nobody else is either - its impossible – all devices have been barred (or limited) through the hub. I can only think BT has a data reading error. No other devices are listed. She does not stream videos (or do anything at all really!) on her one device. Her laptop says her usage for the last 60 days is 1.83GB. Please help, its driving me nuts!!

do you have sky on demand connected or another tv package that you can stream via your broadband.
even if you did it would still need a lot of viewing as a hd movie might be 1.5gb

what computer operating system have you got loaded on any computer in the house.
reason i ask is we had problems with a desktop at work last week. it was running xp and had a 256gb hard drive and when i tried a defrag it said 253gb was used and showed in red.
after digging around it turned out to be a corrupt windows update that continuosly kept reloading while the computer was on.

The Curious Case of the Cursed User Account

I'm having a strange problem with a 4.5 year old MacBook Pro recently upgraded to Mavericks. I recently got a new laptop and I tried a couple programs aimed at cloud- or non-cloud-based syncing between them (box.com and bittorrent sync). On the old computer, these programs failed to install or launch, but when I created a second user account and ran them from there, they both worked fine. I repaired all disk permissions, and I even repaired user folder permissions using the repair utilities boot option. Can you think of any reason why my original user account would be conflicting with these programs? Or anything that might resolve this problem? Thanks a lot.

The curious case of the missing airplay icon

Hello everyone,
last night I noticed that the airplay icon was missing on my iPad. I didn't show up in videos, music or youtube.
When I turned on my iMac I saw that the icon was also missing in iTunes. The only thing I did yesterday was to connect my iPad to my iMac to sync iTunes.
I didn't do anything else really. That's why I figured it might be a good idea to update iTunes. Everything else is pretty much up to date and works fine. Also checked my router and wifi settings and couldn't detect anything out of the ordinary. Basically did everything people advised on the web. Resetting AppleTV didn't help either.
So right now I cannot mirror anything via AppleTV because the airplay symbol is missing on my iOS device as well as on my Mac. You probably know how much that s****. Does anyone have the same issues with airplay? Can anyone help me? I would really appreciate it!

Welcome to the Apple Community.
Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router.
Restart your mobile device.

Let's try a preferences reset: (Windows)
Press and hold Control - Shift - Alt immediately upon cold-starting Photoshop. If you get the keys down quickly enough - and you have to be VERY quick - it will prompt you to confirm deletion of your established preferences, which will lead to them all being set to defaults.

Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
          •          Server name: imap.mail.me.com
          •          SSL Required: Yes
          •          Port: 993
          •          Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
          •          Password: Your iCloud password
SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
          •          Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
          •          SSL Required: Yes
          •          Port: 587
          •          SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
          •          Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
          •          Password: Your iCloud password
Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria: 8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers. If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message. Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.

That means it most likely a setting, Check the following. (steps written for windows 7)
Go to the control panel and find " Devices and printers" and doulble click it.
You should see the icon of your printer their, choose the one without fax in the name.
Right click it and choose " printer properties".
On the "general" Tab click on "preferences".
In the new screen on the "layout" tab cick "advanced"
In the new screen make sure "print in grayscale" is turned off and click ok severall times until all screens are gone.
Try printing again. And make sure in the print screen color printing is also checked.

I have been getting this error message since about the end of June when I updated to the latest version of iTunes. It's pretty annoying. Let me lay out how this has been happening for the past month, the best I can. I have a 32GB 4th gen iPod Touch
I load content up to my iPod. Music, Apps, Videos, pictures, etc.
My iPod works well for a little while, days sometimes a week is the longest I went without seeing this message.
I connect iPod back to my laptop through the standard pack in Apple USB connector.
I get the "Itunes cannot read the contents of ipod. Go to the summary tab in Ipod preferences and click Restore to restore this ipod to factory settings." message. When I go to the preferences tab, I click restore and iTunes gets stuck trying to restore my iPod. Then I have to uplug my iPod. And Shutdown/Restart my PC reconnect my iPod, and go through the restore process again.
I have been doing this for as I said, a month. It's getting pretty grueling to keep havomh putting cotent on my iPod after these restores.
I've tried everything.
I've stopped autosync, it still happens.
I tried to reinstall iTunes(be it I didn't full uninstall before trying to install again and got the option to fix corrupted files and such
I've deleted all old back up, and it still happens
Today is the fist time I'm fully uninstalling iTunes, and then reinstalling to see if this works.
But do you guys have any otehr solutions for this? As I said, this didn't start happening until I installed the lastest version of iTunes 10.6.3

- Have you tried another cable?
- Another USB port?
- When you have the problem, connect it to another computer to help determine if you have an iPod or computer problem.
- Try just restoring the iPod to factory settings/new iPod. Do not restore from backup. If you still have the problem with this and all computer that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

I had the bottom case of my MacbookPro replaced and now I can't print help?

Hi I had the bottom case to my Macbook Pro 2.33 Ghz intel core 2 duo replaced. Prior to this the machine worked perfectly. Now it can't connect to the internet using DHCP and it won't print either over the internet or with the printer plugged in directly. I can connect over airport to the internet if I manually put in the IPv4 address, the Subnet mask and the Router address. These are the only things I have found (so far) that are affected. I dowloaded and reinstalled the printer driver and it still doesn't work. Any ideas as to what they have done to my machine ?

When the ethernet cable is plugged in it does show as plugged in. The interesting thing is that the self assigned IP and Subnet mask address is the same as the self assigned IP and Subnet mask address is for Airport and they don't work. I have to manually enter them and the router address in order to go on the internet. There are 4 other computers using this network and no other computer on the network is having this issue nor did this laptop prior to the bottom case replacement, so I don't think it is the router modem or airport extreme base station.
It shows:
IPv4 address: 169.254.197.177
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
These numbers are quite off from what they should be. Also this doesn't show a router address and it should.

The first thing I would suggest is for you to go to the folder containing your catalog, using your system browser. There will be a folder that has the extension .lrdata. Delete that folder, and then try to start Lightroom. If that doesn't work, replace your catalog with your most recent backup.
