The document "file_name" could not be saved as...

Selected <Save> on a Keynote 5.0.5 document (~40 slides, 5MB) and got "The document "myfilename" could not be saved as "mynewfilename". The only thing I've done since my last save was an export of all the images as PNGs, and I added a shape created inside Keynote.
I've already experienced problems with Keynote not opening saved documents, which (hopefully) I've corrected with setting Preferences to "Save as Package".   Now I'm suddenly getting the message above.
I love this product but I can't believe how unreliable it is. Does Apple actually believe people whose livelihoods depend on this software can risk losing hours or days or even weeks or work when it just surrepitiously decides not to save or open documents?
I was able to copy all the Master slides and slides into a new document which seemed to save OK, but of course now I'm terrified that at any moment I could lose two weeks of work if it pulls one of these corruption quirks.  Please don't force me back to Powerpoint.
What's the problem and is anybody working on it?  And should I be concerned that neither Keynote nor iWorks even appears in the Product List below?  Huh? Hello!?  Apple?
jl

I realize it would be convenient if it worked, but I think you're asking for trouble, if what you're trying to do is actively read and write the project on that remote Windows drive.
In the Finder, control-click on the project folder and zip it. Copy the zip archive to the remote drive. At the next Mac you visit, copy the zip archive to that Mac, and open it and use it. And return it when you're done, if you expect to continue your work at a different Mac next time.
Or spend about $40 and get an 80GB portable USB drive, and keep it in your pocket.

  • Error message "the document iweb could not be saved"

Help! I made a few small updates to my already published web site and now when I go to save or publish it I get the message "The document iWeb could not be saved". I have made changes in the past with no issues.... why now and what is the problem?
    Thanks

It looks like I'm completely screwed. Why the ****
does iWeb not do incremental backups?
Sounds like something to suggest to Apple. But even if Apple does implement something like this, it doesn't take away the ulitimate responsibility of backing up from the end user. I think Apple has a ways to go in terms of making the Domain file more apparent and visible so that the end user understands that THIS is the file to backup!
    Good luck to you!

  • Error message says"the document Web could not be saved" help Please

After spending hours on the final tweeking of my iWeb site I go to publish it and get the message the document could not be saved. Is there anyone out there knows how to get this program to save I have tried everything and nothing. And as luck would have it I didn't keep a back copy of what I put into iWeb. Please help
    thanks Jeff

Well I encountered the same problem and I had to quit and lose the changes but there is a way to save the information.
What you should do is first back up the domain file.
then before you quit and lose the changes, PRINT the pages as a PDF that way you save the information.
Then I reopened and started to match the pages in iWeb to the PDF's
Though I found out that when I copied some text into a Podcast page filler text from one of the PDF's it caused the same error.
So to get that piece to work, I deleted the text box and retyped that part and Presto!

  • NFS client problem "The document X could not be saved"

    Hi,
Briefly: Debian Linux server (Lenny), OS X 10.5.7 client. NFS server config is simple enough:
    /global 192.168.72.0/255.255.255.0(rw,rootsquash,sync,insecure,no_subtreecheck)
This works well without our Linux clients, and generally it is Ok with my OS X iMac. OS X NFS client is configured through Directory Utility, with no "Advanced" options. Client can authenticate with NIS nicely, and NFS, on the whole, works. I can manipulate files with Finder, and create files on the commandline with the usual tools.
The problem is TextEdit, iWork and other Cocoa apps (not all). They can save a file once, but subsequently saving a file produces a "The document X.txt cannot be saved" error dialog. If I remove the file on the commandline and re-save, then the save succeeds. It is as if re-saving the document with the same name as an existing file causes issues. There seems to be no problem with file permissions. When I save in a non NFS exported directory everything is fine.
Has anyone spotted this problem before?
    Lawrence

I doubt that "OS X NFS is fundamentally broken" seeing as how many people use it successfully.
tcpdump (or more preferably: wireshark) might be useful in tracking down what's happening between the NFS client and NFS server. Sometimes utilities like fs_usage can be useful in tracking down the application/filesystem interaction.
It's usually a good idea to check the logs (e.g. /var/log/system.log) for possible clues in case an error/warning is getting logged around the same time as the failure. And if you can't reproduce the problem from the command line, then that can be a good indication that the issue is with the higher layers of the system.
Oh, and if you think there's a bug in the OS, it never hurts to officially tell Apple that via a bug report:
    http://developer.apple.com/bugreporter/
Even if it isn't a bug, they should still be able to work with you to help you figure out what's going on. They'll likely want know details about what exactly isn't working and will probably ask for things like a tcpdump capture file and/or an fs_usage trace.

  • Preview Error, "The Document "name" could not be saved

    Hello!
After modifying a file and trying to save, I receive this error. It does not allow me to save as either or to my desktop.
I have tried changing the permissions, but no luck.  I tried googling the error in hopes that someone else had encountered this error and had a solution but after days of searching I've come to no avail in my quest.
Any help would be very much appreicated!!

That's the error I'm getting.  His issue is close but not quite the same.  I'm not downloading the pciture from outlook (PC's has outlook, Mac's has Entrouage).  The issue is that I am trying to edit the picture from the SAN and I was able to do a basic "save" and it would save the image but now all I get when I try to save it in any way is the above error (was the image included at the top) I've tryed to save to the desktop/library/SAN/documents; save/save as but nothing seems to work

  • "Document Domain could not be saved."

    Evening folks,
I'm working on a website and I'm trying to save and I'm getting an error that says "Document Domain could not be saved."
    A little background.
In mid-may I wiped my drive and re-installed leopard. I reloaded iweb 09 and brought in the domain file from my back up. I was able to save at that point.
I haven't been using iWeb lately because I'm using Rapidweaver more, but I need to work on a site that I have in iWeb.
There currently is a domain file in application support. I tried moving it onto the desktop because I've read that can work, but still no dice.
Any thoughts on how I can get this to save?

Ran in a similar problem now with the 'document Domain could not be saved' message. When I closed and tried to reopen iWeb, the making working area would not open. Got it working again using the following steps:
    1. Close iWeb 09
    2. Find and renamed the Domain.site2 file to something else while retaining the extension
    3. Launch iWeb 09 and force it to create a new Domain.site2 file
    4. If iWeb opens up, create a new site and put in something that you can save. HIT SAVE. (at this stage, I did not get an error message).
    5. Close iWeb 09
    6. Restore the original Domain.site2 file to it's original name. Double-click it to launch iWeb. Hopefully your old iWeb file should work now. Mine did.

  • How to open a Numbers doc after message "The document (name) could not be opened." is received?

I opened an Excel file with multiple worksheets by doubleclicking on it, saved it as a Numbers file and made lots of changes to it. Now I can't open it at all. All I get is the message "The document (name) could not be opened."
    Any ideas?

It seems that your doc is corrupted.
Try to rename it from ********.numbers to ********.numbers.zip
    then double click it
You will get a new ********.numbers file with the structure 'package'.
Try to open it by double-click.
    Sometimes it works.

  • How do I fix the following error? itunes counld not back up the iphone because the back up could not be saved on the computer?

How do I fix the following error? itunes counld not back up the iphone because the back up could not be saved on the computer?

I updated to iOS 5.0.1 days ago and didn't receive that notification until just now...
This time I synced new photos I took yesterday, and it gave me the:
"iTunes Sync: 54 items could not be synced. See iTunes for more information"
Perhaps it kicks off when new items get synced.
I've decided to rent a movie yesterday. Once it gets deleted, I'm curious to see if it jumps to 55 items.

  • ITunes could not back up the iPhone because the back-up could not be saved

I updated my 3GS to the 4os software and after the sync was complete All seemed okay but I am not able to use my camera nor am I able to access my photos on my iphone. It says "updating library" and then closed out of the application. I just tried to sync my phone again (A week later) and I get an error message: "iTunes could not back up the iPhone because the back-up could not be saved on the computer" I have 200GB free space on my hard drive so I know it is not a memory issue. Is this the same issue everyone is experiencing?
Is this an iPhone issue or an iTunes issue?
Any suggestions to get this to work?

    Hi!
I had the same problem with my iPhone4, and I could resolve it thanks to some ideas that I took from Loopster77´s post.
You have to delete the current iTunes backup directory on your computer, that is on PC:
    C:\Users\xxxxxxxx\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\<40 letters and numbers>
being "xxxxxxxx" the username of the computer owner.
What you have to delete is that "<40 letters and numbers>" directory.
After that, your iTunes will be perfectly capable of doing the backup.
I hope this will help you.

  • The iTunes Library could not be saved.  An unknown error occurred -50

I moved my itunes to an external drive that I am accessing wirelessly (it is pugged into by time capsule).  When I open itunes I can see and access all of my songs and videos fine but I keep getting the error message "The itunes library could not be saved.  An unknown error occurred -50".  This must have something to do with moving itunes to the external drive but I can't figure out how to stop this message.  I am running itunes 10.4.1 on Mac OS 10.7.1.
    Can someone please help?
    Thanks,

  • Cannot open Pages documents that I've worked on.  I open a new document, work on it, then save and close it.  When I try to open the document again, I get the following message: The document "[name]" could not be opened. The file isn't in the correct form

I cannot open Pages documents that I have worked on and saved.  When I try to reopen Pages documents that I've saved, I get the following
    message:
"The document “[name of document]” could not be opened. The file isn’t in the correct format.
The file might be corrupted, truncated, or in an unexpected format."
I have downloaded the latest update to iWork, but that doesn't help.
    I use Mac OSX 10.6.7
    I am using Pages '09 version 4.0.5 (852)
If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it.
    Best regards,
    New York Mac User

A few general trouble shooting tips that may apply here:
    1. If you used Software Update to do the OS update(s) to reach 10.6.7, go to http://support.apple.com/downloads/ and download and apply the Mac OS v10.6.7 Combo Updater. The Combo Updater contains some fixes that were not included in the incremental updaters used by Software Update.
1a. Check that you have the current version of Pages (and of the other iWork applications) installed. All three applications' current version numbers end in .0.5
    2. A common cause of malfunctioning applications is a corrupted preferences file (.plist file). Your Pages '09's plist is at yourname > Library > Preferences > com.apple.iWork.pages.plist
Quit Pages, locate the file and Drag it to the Desktop (or to the Trash).
Restart Pages and attempt to open one of the files.
If all is well, Trash the plist file and empty the Trash.
If there's no change, AND you've made changes to the Preferences that you wish to keep, drag the file back to its previous location, replacing any new one that has been created.
    Regards,
    Barry

I have loaded some home movies from my video camera and when I try to view these I receive the error message The document “filename:MPG” could not be opened. A required codec isn't available.
I cannot seem to do anything with these files. I can view them on another PC. I have tried to add them to iTunes with no luck, and tried to install an add on for quicktime however it does not download.
    Any suggestions?

Have you tried VideoLAN? It can often play videos that won't play with Quicktime.

  • For four days I have been unable to open a lot of documents. When I try I get a message "The document "name" could not be opened. You don't have permission. This has happened to an important letter which I corrected four times. My Mac has altered the name

This problem began when I typed in an address http www etc., making one mistake in the address. I corrected it and then tried to copy the address because it was long (I wanted to be able to acces it another time), and that's when the trouble starrted. I just copt documents to get a new one because it's quicker, but it is unorthodox, I know. Since then whenever I copy a document i cannot open it, and it often puts a gobledegook ending to the document name. I've started emailing texts to myself so as to keep them, but I MUST be able to use documents normally. I hava a MacBook Pro, using OS Mountain Lion 10.8.5. I don't like it. It's fairly new, and has messed up my system of documents : the size is alll wrong and the tabulations are worse than ever. I use text edit because I wanted to use Macdictate because I am handicapped (arthritis and firbomyalgia) but I have never been able to get it to work. Since I changed OS I cannot use Text edit properly any more. Please help me. I think it must be a bug that came through when I was putting this address in four days ago. I went to the site once I'd corrected the address and it was perfectly normal. I shall ring them today and ask them if this has happened to anyone else. I live in France. Thank you for your advice. Because I am handicapped and I do not dirve, it is very difficult to get to a Mac store. I deleted Mac cloud documents because I don't want to use it and I thought it might solve the problem, but it didn"t.

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
