The document "fine_name" couldn't be opened

Has anyone had the pleasure of working on a pages file, printing it, saving it, closing it and when you go back to open it, it says "The document "fine_name" couldn't be opened"
It is a .page file format, I have tried opening it up in text edit and changing the filename to word doc. I have also tried opening it on another machine and nothing works. Apple seem to think it is corrupt. I wouldn't normally mind, but it is a very important pages file and I need to recover it.
Any advise would be much appreciated.
Kind regards
Gavstars

Gavstars,
welcome to Apple Discussions.
Renaming the file will not work because Pages files are folders (or packages). Ctrl-Click (right-click) on the file name in Finder and choose "Show Package content" from the contextual menu.
Inside of the package you'll see different folders and files (e.g. images) belonging to your document. Maybe one of these files is missing. If there's a file called index.xml.gz, you could at least try to get the text of your document.
Copy index.xml.gz to your desktop and double click on the file. It will be extracted to index.xml. You could open index.xml in Safari (shows only text but difficult to read) or in Internet Explorer or some decent XML editor. IE and the editor will show xml tags surrounding the text.

  • Pages returning error message "The document (name) couldn't be opened"

Okay so here is my problem: I made a document in Pages the other day (a list of books I own) and after spending an hour or so on it I saved, closed Pages and went and did something else. The next day I came to open it again to add something and Pages came up with this message "The document (document naem) couldn't be opedned". That it, nothing else, no reason why or anything. I tried again and again, the same thing happednd. I tried to open it with Text Edit and got this error: "The document (document name) could not be opened. The file isn't in the correct format. The file might be corrupted, truncated, or in an unexpected format."
Okay so something is wrong. The weird thing is I can quick look it, I can open it in Preview fine.
So after trying everything I could think of I decided a few days later to just remake the document, I had all the information there so it was a bit easier this time. I started afresh. I frequently saved, quited and re opened just to make sure everything was okay, after a while I stopped doing this as it seemed everything was okay. I finished, saved and then tried to reopen it to make sure it was fine. It wouldn't open and returned the same error as before!!!
This is utterly preplexing and extremely frustrating. I have no idea what might be causing this. If anyone can offer some help that would be great.
    Thanks in advance :-)

Where are you saving the files to?

  • How to open a Numbers doc after message "The document (name) could not be opened." is received?

I opened an Excel file with multiple worksheets by doubleclicking on it, saved it as a Numbers file and made lots of changes to it. Now I can't open it at all. All I get is the message "The document (name) could not be opened."
    Any ideas?

It seems that your doc is corrupted.
Try to rename it from ********.numbers to ********.numbers.zip
    then double click it
You will get a new ********.numbers file with the structure 'package'.
Try to open it by double-click.
    Sometimes it works.

  • TS4009 The document "Name" could not be opened. (Numbers file @ iCloud)

I have a file saved at iCloud that can not be opened anymore.
Numbers says: The document “Name” could not be opened.

I've solved my problem by following instructions here:
    http://www.freeforum101.com/iworktipsntrick/viewtopic.php?t=308&mforum=iworktips ntrick
    Step-by-step:
    1. renamed .numbers-tef file to .pdf;
    2. control cliked - then - Show Package Contents
    3. double clicked index.xml.gz - index.xml has been created!
    4. renamed back .pdf to .numbers
    5. double cliked file and Bingo! Numbers opened the file.

  • For four days I have been unable to open a lot of documents. When I try I get a message "The document "name" could not be opened. You don't have permission. This has happened to an important letter which I corrected four times. My Mac has altered the name

This problem began when I typed in an address http www etc., making one mistake in the address. I corrected it and then tried to copy the address because it was long (I wanted to be able to acces it another time), and that's when the trouble starrted. I just copt documents to get a new one because it's quicker, but it is unorthodox, I know. Since then whenever I copy a document i cannot open it, and it often puts a gobledegook ending to the document name. I've started emailing texts to myself so as to keep them, but I MUST be able to use documents normally. I hava a MacBook Pro, using OS Mountain Lion 10.8.5. I don't like it. It's fairly new, and has messed up my system of documents : the size is alll wrong and the tabulations are worse than ever. I use text edit because I wanted to use Macdictate because I am handicapped (arthritis and firbomyalgia) but I have never been able to get it to work. Since I changed OS I cannot use Text edit properly any more. Please help me. I think it must be a bug that came through when I was putting this address in four days ago. I went to the site once I'd corrected the address and it was perfectly normal. I shall ring them today and ask them if this has happened to anyone else. I live in France. Thank you for your advice. Because I am handicapped and I do not dirve, it is very difficult to get to a Mac store. I deleted Mac cloud documents because I don't want to use it and I thought it might solve the problem, but it didn"t.

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart

  • Cannot open Pages documents that I've worked on.  I open a new document, work on it, then save and close it.  When I try to open the document again, I get the following message: The document "[name]" could not be opened. The file isn't in the correct form

I cannot open Pages documents that I have worked on and saved.  When I try to reopen Pages documents that I've saved, I get the following
    message:
"The document “[name of document]” could not be opened. The file isn’t in the correct format.
The file might be corrupted, truncated, or in an unexpected format."
I have downloaded the latest update to iWork, but that doesn't help.
    I use Mac OSX 10.6.7
    I am using Pages '09 version 4.0.5 (852)
If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it.
    Best regards,
    New York Mac User

A few general trouble shooting tips that may apply here:
    1. If you used Software Update to do the OS update(s) to reach 10.6.7, go to http://support.apple.com/downloads/ and download and apply the Mac OS v10.6.7 Combo Updater. The Combo Updater contains some fixes that were not included in the incremental updaters used by Software Update.
1a. Check that you have the current version of Pages (and of the other iWork applications) installed. All three applications' current version numbers end in .0.5
    2. A common cause of malfunctioning applications is a corrupted preferences file (.plist file). Your Pages '09's plist is at yourname > Library > Preferences > com.apple.iWork.pages.plist
Quit Pages, locate the file and Drag it to the Desktop (or to the Trash).
Restart Pages and attempt to open one of the files.
If all is well, Trash the plist file and empty the Trash.
If there's no change, AND you've made changes to the Preferences that you wish to keep, drag the file back to its previous location, replacing any new one that has been created.

  • When I open a document in Adobe XI Pro Windows 8.1 I get a white screen and the document does not appear to open, Adobe is 'not responding'

I purchased a computer with Windows 8 and installed the 8.1 upgrade. I installed Adobe Acrobat XI Pro and have had error messages about specific fonts not being present but the document opens just fine. Other times (about half the time) the document will not open or opens as a blank screen, and eventually Adobe Not Responding appears, with the usual choices to close or look for a solution. If I look for a solution it tells me that no solution was found. I have not found any information online about this problem. I have used Adobe Pro in previous versions in a Windows 7 and Windows XP environment and not had any problems.  Is there a simple solution to this? I have uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe, and still no luck.

    Hi nausm,
Is this issue specific to the pdf files or do you face the issue with any pdf you try to open?
Which application was used to create these pdfs?
Have you updated Acrobat to v11.0.7 and checked?
Are you able to launch Acrobat standalone app without clicking on any pdfs?
You are getting error related to specific fonts because the document might have the fonts that are not available on your computer.

I have loaded some home movies from my video camera and when I try to view these I receive the error message The document “filename:MPG” could not be opened. A required codec isn't available.
I cannot seem to do anything with these files. I can view them on another PC. I have tried to add them to iTunes with no luck, and tried to install an add on for quicktime however it does not download.
    Any suggestions?

Have you tried VideoLAN? It can often play videos that won't play with Quicktime.

I have produced my Family History over the past few years in Appleworks. This morning I tried opening several documents and got the message 'Import Error Not a Presentation. Some that did open were in a different layout. KEYNOTE and PAGES in the Dock flashed as I tried to open my documents. How can I regain my documents in their original format ?

You do not have the properties in the Bookmarks Manager (Library), but you should have it if you right-click a bookmark the Bookmarks Toolbar or in the bookmarks sidebar.
On Mac you probably do not have it if you right-click an item in the Bookmarks menu (this menu is under control of the Mac OS), but I assume that this should work if you click the "Show your bookmarks" button on the Navigation Toolbar that is next to the star to bookmark the current tab and right-click an item in the bookmarks list that opens.

It happens whilest adding files from PC to Ipad (*.png) using Itunes... Is this solveable in any way?? Its driving me crazy!
Oh, and it takes HOURS with Itunes! :/ (50mb)

  • The document " ...." can not be opened - HELP!

Ahh! I've just spent about 10 hours working on a 36 page booklet for my senior biology class that I need to print off tomorrow and it seems the file has corrupted itself.
First, it wouldn't let me add any more text/pages, so I saved and closed it, and tried to reopen it, and it's giving me an error, "The document "Grade 12 Term 1 2009" couldn't be opened".
I've tried restarting, but it still won't open- tried making another copy but that didn't work either.
I can still 'peruse' through the document in quicklook, but cannot open it.
    Please help me

If you saved using the new 'single file format',
    try this scheme:
    duplicate the document
rename it from xxx.pages to xxx.zip
    double click it
You will get a folder entitled xxx
    open it
In a correct file you would find a file entitled Index.xml.
    Maybe it's entitled Index-new.xml.
If it's that, rename it as Index.xml
close the folder and rename it as xxx.Pages
I guess that it will open flawlessly.
Sometimes the Index.xml may be wrongly formed.
We may read it with TextEdit or TextWrangler but Pages is unable to work with it.
If you got such a file, please attach the duplicate to a mail and send them to my mailbox.
Click my blue name to get my address.
I will be able to send it to Apple Bugs Hunters.
And of course never rely on a single copy of files.
When you work on a document, _save often with different names_. Doing that you will have consecutive different versions so if something fails, you will be able to recover most of your job.
This is why I posted an AutoSave tool some times ago.
