The dreaded whine & new replacement battery

I have one of the very early MBPs, one that was "supposed" to have the processor whine - only mine didn't. My hearing was even (rather rudely) questioned because many were convinced that ALL MacBook Pros of that vintage HAD to have the whine...
Well, my hearing is fine. I received a new battery from Apple as part of the MBP battery replacement program last week and ever since, when running on battery, I now have the dreaded whine!!
I find it mildly annoying. Frankly it's just another computer noise to me - I come from the old days when you couldn't tell much difference between your IBM-PC and a Hoover vacuum, sonically. But others have remarked that the battery exchange FIXED the whine, and I just wanted to post my opposite experience.
I'm planning on buying a glossy screen MBP with a Merom CPU as soon as they are available, another reason not to panic. But it IS irritating, I'll admit...

I've noticed a few problems ever since installing the new battery.
Step one for you, try resetting your PMU... sometimes it helps.
It's annoying, but at least now my battery doesn't cause my computer to shut off at 20% without warning.
Try the PMU reset... shut down, remove power cord, & Battery. Hold the POWER button for 10 seconds.
Reverse the directions and restart.
See if it helps

  • Weird startup resoluton then casused the dreaded whine!

My macbook is a few months old and so far no problems. Until today. When i switched it on i knew something was wrong because the OSX loading screen appeared to the right hand side of the screen and was also bigger then usual. Sure enough when it was all loaded up the resolutionn was somehow increased and everything on the right of the desktop was off the screen and the background picture and all icons were all stretched. Clicking the display icon in the toolbar and selecting 1280x800 (even though thats what it was saying was selected)fixed the resolution but removed my wallpaper.
Then it happened....THE WHINE It was then that i realised the dreaded whine had started - never heard it before but its very annoying. I know how to get rid of it having read other posts but i wondered if anyone else had experienced this weird resolution issue?

The whine isn't a big deal; all machines make a bit of nosie. I can only hear the whine on my computer if I put my ear right up to the keyboard.

  • Does the iphone5 have a replacement battery?

The charge on my iPhone 5 is terrible now.  I have to keep it charged all the time.  Can I buy a replacement battery for the phone?

Apple will replace the battery for $79 US.

  • New replacement battery is dead ?

I've been shuffling between 2 good healthy batteries when I decided to add my new third battery which was still sealed from Apple as part of their recall program.
The new battery is not recoginized by the Powerbook and the batt. icon in the finder is marked with an "X". Charger remains green and computer will shut down completelly if unplugged. Batt. updater doesn't recognize any battery to update.
Charger is fine as it charges the other 2 batts.
    What gives?
    chris

No satisfaction from Apple, so I had to take matters into my own hands. I knew the battery was new; I had unwrapped the shrink wrap myself. I knew the battery had no moving parts. The battery contacts looked clean.
OK, I took the battery in my hand and slammed it down flat on my desk and wacked it on it's sides for good measure.
When I put it back into my powerbook , it started charging - first one light, then another until fully charged.
    Try it.

  • New replacement battery worse than old one

My Ibook 12" and battery were on the recall list. I didn't notice to much in the way of heat or bad battery life before the recall, but I thought this was a good chance to get a new battery. Well the new one came and it is way worse than the old one. Fan is running almost constantly, poor battery life, the hard drive side is getting very hot, Charger is running hot. I don't think I want to keep the new battery, any advise.
    Thanks in advance

Hi josh and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Firstly, check to see if your new battery is also on the recall list. It has happened…
Secondly, your new battery is subject to Apple's standard 90 day warrantee. If it is defective, irrespective of its recall status, then it should be replaced. Contact your local Applecare and explain, calmly and politely, the problems that you are having and your concerns for your own safety and that of your iBook. An iBook's fan shouldn't run constantly and the charger shouldn't be uncomfortably hot.
You'll do no harm, and might do some good, by doing a PMU reset:
    1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
    2. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
    3. Wait at least 5 seconds.
    4. Press the Power button to restart the iBook
    Good luck,
    Adrian

  • Low capacity on new replacement battery

I've recently had my PowerBook battery replaced as part of the battery exchange program.
With the new battery, I followed the instructions word for word - plugged in the battery without the power supply connected, discharged it completely, plugged in the PSU, charged up the battery... Everything OK? Well, No...
I started getting what seemed like random shutdowns and the clock on my machine was resetting every time this happened. I repeated the process three times but still no joy. I naturally thought this is a problem with the battery, so I downloaded coconut battery from http://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery/ to see what was going on.
Coconut battery told me that my 'new' battery only holds 62% of it's capacity after just 3 charge cycles and it only lasts for about 1hr 20mins at best.
Anyone else having this problem? And is there something I can do to fix it before getting Apple on the case?
    PowerBook G4 15 1.67Mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi, Jason. I wouldn't try to do anything to fix it before calling Apple. If you've followed the instructions that came with the battery to the letter, you should either have new-battery performance, or you should have a satisfactory explanation from Apple of why you don't. See whatever warranty materials were included with the new battery for the appropriate contact channel.
To find out whether other participants in the battery-exchange program have had experiences similar to yours, repost your question in the 15" Aluminum PBG4 battery forum. Titanium Powerbook batteries are different, and not eligible for the exchange program.

  • How long should a new replacement battery last on a Macbook 13 inch 2008?

It's in the the title I guess. I have a 13 inch Black MacBook from 2008. My Battery was still giving me nearly two hours and the cycles was well into the 900s. I'm OCD about taking care of it. So what should I expect out of this new battery? The same performance? When I first got this Macbook it could nearly get me through a whole 7 hour school day on one charge. I don't need that anymore but I would appreciate some where close for the money I paid for the new battery.

The new battery should behave very much like an original battery...that said, every battery behaves a little differently so be flexible in what you see.  If it lasts much less time, then have it tested.  But overall, should be reasonably close to the same behavior.

  • Now i have the dreaded whine noise on my macbook pro

harddrive us loud now i get the whine noise, and people said he issue was done for

Um, if the harddrive is whining it might be broken since the whine was caused by fan/power issues. I'd take it in to an apple store and have it looked at right away before the drive dies.

  • Genuine Lenovo Replacement Battery Does Not Charge

    After reading the number of people on this forum who experienced the same problem I faced (my T61p 9 cell battery went from fine to dead overnight), I took the advice of the contributors and purchased a new, genuine Lenovo replacement battery from a seller on e-bay.  I compared the new battery to my original battery and here's the test results for each of the 2 batteries;

After charging the replacement battery overnight, the battery gauge never went above showing 24% charged.  I unplugged the AC adapter and it went from 24% to its current level of 5% in about 15 minutes.  After plugging the AC adapter back into the computer, the battery will not charge.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It is hard to be sure without seeing it, but best guess is that the battery charging circuitry on the motherboard has died. If you still have remaing warranty, now is the time to use it.

  • Replacement Battery Chargeing Issues

    Hello,
I recently bought a brand new replacement battery for my PowerBook G4. It runs great, the only problem is that it only charges when the computer is up and running. It won't charge in sleep mode or when the laptop is shut down. It isn't an Apple battery but it was made for this laptop. I've tried calibrating the battery as well as resetting the PMU. However, that didn't work. The old battery would charge in any mode, it just didn't power the computer for very long.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • RESULT - Free Replacement Battery from Apple UK

    Hi to All,
Like a lot of you I had problems with my battery. I noticed earlier this year my MBP would power-off when there was still lots of battery charge left. It gradually got worse and worse. A few months ago I noticed whenever I pulled the power cord out it would switch off and recently I can only use it when it's plugged in.
I read about the battery problems online, and on this forum. I discovered it was a very common problem. I had assumed there was nothing I could do other than buy a new battery, but after reading posts from some of you who have had success getting a replacement one I thought I'd call Apple. Nothing to lose other than cost of phone call. To be honest I wasn't expecting to get any joy as I bought my MBP in May 2006.
I spoke to a overly-friendly guy in Bangalore who kept saying "Don't worry, don't worry. I will sort this out for you". He took my details and serial number etc.. then kept putting me on hold as he spoke to his 'supervisor'. After 15 mins he explained that my battery's serial no. is one that qualified for the replacement programme - but that only applied up to 2 years after purchase. As mine is 30 months old, he had to do some arm twisting and they made an exception for me. He transferred me to a woman in Scotland who gave me a case number etc.. She then passed me onto a dispatch guy.
After 20 mins on the phone my free replacement battery is on it's way. Not sure if I've just been very lucky on this occasion, but I would recommend calling Apple Support wherever you are, before going ahead and forking out for a new battery.

Hmm... Newer Technologies' reseller list includes OWC/esales but they
are not the same; one is a reseller and the other is a manufacturer. A
few product names at OWC are not seen anywhere else unless you look
real hard, but Newer Tech and NuPower can be bought direct from Newer
Technologies online; and a reseller could contact them to carry their stuff.
In any event, if just the plastic is mal-formed, and the section not fitting up
is just a layer of white plastic, that'd be comparatively easy to change. If
nothing else, Apple should have a shorter waiting list on replacement cells
now the recall numbers have been going out to customers. I got mine after
about a two month wait; and after all that waiting, I've gotten over the need
    to use a portable computer. It just sits there and I have to hassle with it;
to keep it charged up and up to date. With winter here, I don't carry it while
travelling anywhere, it'd freeze too easily over the distances I have to go!
Did Newer Tech offer to refund monies and take back these odd batteries?
Have you contacted other battery sales sources for comparative products?
The quality and support plus warranty (and fit, finish, compatibility)
    are all important details.
Some cheap replacements could be dangerous and not suited for use in
the iBook or PowerBook they are intended to replace. I see some at
places like amazon afiliate stores, and wonder what they really are inside.

  • Replacement Battery Charging

I recently installed a new replacement battery into my MBP and when I try to charge my computer the LED light will flicker between orange and green and the battery status at the top flips between charging and not charging. I'm not sure if it's actually charging. Any one have any ideas?

Check both sides of the magsafe connection for debris and verify that it is inserted correctly.
What does the charge indicator on the battery itself say it's charge level is?

  • How to I train a new Macbook battery?

What's the process of training a new/replacement battery for a late 2008 Macbook Pro?

You don't. Training batteries on a MacBook Pro is not necessary. Just be sure you use it on battery only (without being plugged in) at times.

  • P35 NEO MS-7360 Replacement Battery

Hi, i believe i need a new battery for my motherboard as i am frequently met with "CMOS time and date not set" when i boot up my computer and i am just checking before i buy a new battery that i am getting the correct one. I have written down what is printed on the front of the battery: "KTS, Lithium Battery, Japan, STD, CR2032" and after looking around on the internet for a replacement battery i found a site where i plan to purchase one from. Will this battery be a suitable replacement, thanks.

Quote from: Mike on 02-July-10, 01:31:10
You can go to your local electronics store, even a grocery store(at least in the USA), and get a CR2032 battery.  You can use one from just about any supplier with confidence.
I know that. But i want to be sure the battery is suitable before purchasing it and the one on the website is the best example i could find, i am just being careful.
