The DVD drive fails to read some disks

Audio disks and program disks that read OK on my other Macs may fail to read on this one, yet this one recognizes most disks with no trouble.
I'll buy a few new music disks and two will be fine while the 3rd isn't recognized. I put the unregognized one in my PowerBook and it's 100% OK there.
This MacBook Pro is not an over-used drive. 20 to 30 disks over its lifetime.
Is there a cleaning disk made for laptops? The cleaners I've seen say not for laptops.
Appreciate any advice.

No I haven't. Nor have I ever used any CD/DVD cleaning discs of any type on any drive. If I have a CD/DVD drive fail to work properly I just replace it. For the cost of most it is not worth my time to bother trying to clean an already faulty drive.
IMHO the drives used by Apple are anything But Super, as the name would imply.
The only reason I could see that any normal drive cleaning disk would not work in a Notebook Tray drive, and especially in any Slot loading drive, is if it was one of those Mini discs that are much smaller in diameter then a standard CD/DVD disc. Those will get stuck inside a slot loading drive. Not sure what the problem would be with them in a Slimline Tray loading notebook drive. Maybe because the head is already so close to the disc?
I was going by many other posts I have seen on this forum about using one of these cleaning discs.
Sorry if I mislead you in any way. That was not my intension. That is why I stated "In the end you may have to replace the drive or get an external".
Good Luck and Best Wishes.

  • Satellite M40-145: CD/DVD drive won't read some DVDs

    Hello!
I own a Satellite M40-145 purchased just over one year ago; the DVD driver worked perfectly until three days ago, but today I discovered something... peculiar. It still reads commercial DVDs and burned DVD+R, but apparently it doesn't read burned DVD-Rs anymore. I have tried with different DVD-Rs I burned through the same DVD player, with no success; trying to access the DVD yields a "insert disk in D: drive" message.
In this case, I'm talking about movies on DVDs. Please tell me there's a way to solve this without sending the computer to customer service...
I'd hate to think it broke down just days after the expiration date of the warranty.

    Hi
Well, you can try to remove the drive form the device manger.
After new reboot the drive should be recognized again. Check then if its possible to read the DVD-R CD.
But the issue sounds as a lens calibration error. If you use different media the lens must be calibrated again. But if this procedure fails, the drive is not able to read or write the DVD for example.
Unfortunately, in such cases only the drive replacement will solve this issue.

  • Satellite A100-447 - DVD drive won't read some discs

    Hi,
    I have a 4 month old Satellite 100-447 (PSAAN), came pre-loaded with Vista Home Premium, and has a Mat****a UJ-850S super-multi DVD/CD drive.
The DVD drive is not functioning correctly. It will recognise some blank DVD's, but never DVD-R and will not recognise any burned DVD's at all. It's fine with CD's, and with DVD movie discs. It's just recordable DVD's where there's a problem.
Also when attempting to write to a DVD when it does choose to recognise one it errors out half way through.
    What can I do?
    Thanks for your help.
    Adam

    Hi,
    you can do the follwowing:
Go to this website http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp ,
download the latest firmware update for that drive, install it and then try it again.
Sometimes the manufacturer have to update their drives for the newest recordable media and so I think it can be possible that your drive is simply not up-to-date.

Have tried finding firmware update - but it does not seem to exist

was hoping the fresh install would fix the problem (came from Vista 32 bit)
    but it didn't
    any suggestions appreciated

Total WAG:  are your home-made data DVDs finalized?  I think just about everything these days can handle mulit-session CDs, but IIRC there are some configurations that won't recognize multi-session DVDs.
Like I said, just a WAG.

  • DVD drive does not read SOME discs

    Hello there,
My DVD drive had been working fine for the last 2 years, but now it sometimes simply won't read some film DVDs. The problem is not related to the DVD area thing. What happens is that I put the disc in the drive, it spends a long time spinning the disc around, and then nothing happens: explorer just shows as if there was no disc in the drive.
My laptop is a HP Compaq 6715s. My system is Windows XP SP3. My drive lists as a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20L. (For some reason, although I only have one physical drive, another device is listed in the Device Manager just underneath the GSA-T20L: a TSHAJWP XAZ0TU7SPEF SCSI CdRom. But I believe this is a virtual drive created by Deamon emulator?).
All hints and help would be greatly appreciated!
    Best,
    Pedro

Also, I forgot to say that I have tested the films that don't work in my machine elsewhere, so I am certain the problem is not in the discs themselves.

[Edited by: admin on 05-Nov-05 08:28]

    Hello
On this way it is not easy to give you a proper explanation. I have the same unit (1900-703) and my drive works fine till now. In your posting there is no precise information which player you use. Maybe you must install some codec and on this way you will be able to play all of them. I hope that you use full version player and not some test version.
Markus is absolutely right about CDs and DVD. Many of them can make some troubles and I recommend you to use well known products.
If there is some possibility check the CD on some other computer if they are really burned properly and if you can see data there you can be sure if there is some problem with your drive.

  • SD-L622A CD/DVD drive does not read some CD's - Satellite L300-144

    Drive TOSHIBA SD-L622A.
The drive does not see boot CD with Windows XP Service Pack 3, some of boot CDs with diagnostic utilities (IMHO 2CD format).
Also these CD does not seen by drive even under Windows XP, Vista.
To My wife has bought Toshiba L300, but another modification. There there is drive Matsu****a (Panasonic).
Problems with the same disks has not arisen.
PS Sorry for a terrible English. My native language is Russian :)

In the first topic I wrote
..+The drive does not see boot CD with Windows XP Service Pack 3+..
I have taken other disk from my friend - the situation has not changed.
Installation Windows XP SP3 has a success only after copying the distribution kit on removable HDD and manual install Windows from command prompt
    But I think its abnormal.
I think, the theme can be closed because this question should be addressed to Toshiba's fimware developers
+If you cannot use “some CDs with diagnostic utilities” maybe are the problem those CDs. For me it is not so dramatic issue. if you can use all “commercial” medias everything must be OK.+
May be.....but I have bought two notebooks Toshiba in a day for Me & My wife.
On my wives notebook all the above-stated disks playing normally, but it has another drive by Panasonic (Matsu****a)

  • Portege R600 - Is the DVD drive compatible with double layer disks?

The Australian specs for the *R600 PPR61A* state that the unti contains: *DVD SuperMulti Double Layer (7mm)*
The R600 however does not recognise any blank double layer DVD discs using either Windows burning tools or Toshiba Disc Creator.
Is this a mistake in the specs (being completely misleading), or do I have a driver/configuration problem?
Australian specs are available here: http://203.56.127.51/%2fTOPIC%2fproduct_details%2fproduct%2f20090325%2f Toshiba_PortegeR600_PPR61A-00300R_Specification_Brochure_Mar09.PDF

    Hello
Are you really sure that your ODD can recognize double layer DVD’s?
I mean on the specification of the ODD you can find a mark (#) and on the second page you find the following information about this:
#=> +CD/DVD write capability may vary depending on the type/brand of media utilized+
So I think your model is equipped with a non double layer ODD.
But you can check this for example with Nero as Chad suggested.
    What does Nero say?

You can't get there with GUID/GPT.
There are tips on making a USB flash device that is bootable.
You can set aside a small 6GB partition somewhere and put Windows 7 installer there and run it WHILE IN Windows.
Windows Vista can be upgraded in place to 7 RC.
    You'll need NTFS (30-50GB).
Windows doesn't support FW for booting.
You can create a drive that has Master Boot Record.

  • DVD drive does not read media

Hi. This is regarding my Satellite L750 laptop (1 year old), for the past two days the DVD drive refuses to read any media - CDs/DVDs. I've done extensive and exhaustive searches to find a solution to this problem but to no avail. One of the most common problems I have come across is a software conflict with iTunes (installed on my machine) and a solution which states deleting "LowerFilters" and "UpperFilters" from the registry. I have tried this out but have not been succcessful in solving the problem. Also, the drive is listed in the Device Manager.
Just for the record, I have not updated/added/deleted any CD recording software or any other software. I have not even updated iTunes for the past two months.
    I'm using Win 7 64-bit OEM.
Can someone shed some light on this issue? Will appreciate.

You may want to try this Microsoft Fix-It.
What can I do if my CD or DVD drive doesn't work properly?
You could also try using System Restore to restore a previous restore point from before this became an issue.
If that doesn't work, you could try a recovery. Recovering your laptop to its original, out-of-the-box state is a great way to eliminate software as a possible cause of the problem. Note that doing a system recovery will return the laptop to its default conditions, completely wiping your data. Information on how to perform a system recovery can be found in your user's guide. On most models you can hold '0' (zero) with the computer turned off. Then press the power button while continuing to hold '0' until the recovery utlity starts.

  • Help! Can't access the DVD drive on laptop

When selecting the D:/ drive, I get an error message that says D:/ not accessible.  Access Denied.  The DVD drive won't read music or data disks.  The light comes on and the disk spins but then the dialog box comes up and says not accessible, access denied.  I checked for drive updates but the last one was in 2001.  I uninstalled and reinstalled the drive but now I get a message that says no D:/ drive installed!
The OS is Windows XP on a Toshiba Satellite M35X-S349.  Device manager says both are working properly.  The DVD/CD drive is a Matsu**bleep**a DVD-RAM 820S.

Menu at top  Finder > Preferences > Sidebar > Devices and make sure CDs DVDs and iPod box is checked.

  • After BIOS update DVD driver do not read DVDs anymore - Sat A80

    Hi,
I have a Satellite A80-131 and after bios update (last version 2.5) by windows procedure update, my DVD drive do not read DVD medias anymore. It is possible to read CD medias, but not DVD one.
Can I reinstall the old bios? Can I reinstall the firmware?
    Thanks
    Ronai Lisboa

    Hi Ronai
Like Jimi has said in the posting above. It's very unusual that after BIOS updating the DVD drive hasn't read the DVDs.
Furthermore it's not advisable to use any 3rd party applications to DOWNGRADE the BIOS. Usually only the ASP can downgrade the BIOS. Such procedures are very serious and the wrong procedure can damage the motherboard.
However, it's nice that you have solved the problem and that the drive works properly.
    Thanks for the feedback.

    Hello Robert,
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • The dvd drive in my macbook pro will not read any disk.

The dvd is a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868.   The disks (CD or DVD) all show up as blank disks. Some will not eject.  Some will try to run.  I can hear it try to access the disk but it never gets up to speed. Is there some way to check the drive to see what the problem is?

It's probable that you have a bad DVD drive.  You can take it to an Apple Genius to see if they can fix or repair it (if it's under warranty).  If it isn't, you can replace the DVD drive with a hard drive or a new Super Drive by yourself (it's a tiny bit technical).  If you're still on warranty or have the extended AppleCare, you can get it fixed.
