The enigma that is my ipod

The whole problem started a few weeks after I was given a new ipod from apple b/c my old ipod nano’s screen had been busted.
I received a weird icon with a folder and an exclamation point. “Easy” I thought and I went to apple support and followed all the instructions. I even Downloaded the newest version of ipod updater and the newest version of itunes. These two versions are the two that are currently running on my computer.
I used the newest 6/28/06 ipod updater to restore my ipod and it worked….for about one day and crashed. The music had weird scratching sounds and then suddenly the screen went blank and all I could see was a message that said “used itunes to restore” in about five different languages.
I restored again, got mad and went to the apple store to talk to a “genius.” He apparently could not find a problem and gave me my ipod back completely normal. I thanked him and went home to recharge with a wall adapter. Upon merely touching the port my nano crashed and then said “use itunes to restore.” I got mad tried a few mixes of different versions of itunes+ipod updater and went back to the apple store.
The person that helped me said to me he couldn’t find a problem either and returned my ipod to me. After I got home though, even though I didn’t even do anything to my ipod it died on me again! The same message shows and this time the battery was completely charged and I didn’t do anything!
Right now I restore with the old versions of the updater and then update w/6/28/06 and it seems to work for up until I load the music into my ipod. Then my ipod flashes the “restore with itunes” message again.
Please tell me what to do!! I will follow all your instructions to the very last detail!! I even tried reformatting doing the FAT32 thing I read in another forum thread, but nothing worked so I think it's an incorrect mix of software??
ipod nano 2GB   Windows XP

Thank you so much for your reply! I tried exactly what you told me, I even double checked to make sure I was running the right software, but it didn't work. I still get the "restore w/itunes" message, but now a small window pops up when I plug in my ipod that says "your ipod is damaged and needs to be repaired."
(I hit repair of course, but nothing worked) =C
One of the sales people told me it could be a virus on my computer, maccafee/AVG/ad-aware told me I had nothing though.
Do you think it has to do with running the latest version of all the software? My friend told me his old ipod crashed when he used the newest versions of ipod+itunes.

My Ipod won't sync to my itunes, it has before but now the button that says 'sync ipod' is grey and won't let me click it. Why is this?

Did anything happen to the computer?  It appears that you are trying to sync to another iTunes library since in that case you can only sync with one iTunes library.

  • I got an iPhone today. The computer that had my iPod music on it is broken. So I am using a new computer. I have both my iPod and iPhone plugged into this computer. How do I make it so my iPod music stays on my iTunes so I can update my iPhone? HELP!

My computer broke and so I am using a new one to update the music on my iPhone I got today. I can't get my music from my iPod touch (that's plugged in at the same time) to stay on this iTunes. I have already authorized it and everything. I just need to be able to unplug my iPod and plug in my iPhone to get my stinkin music on there. Please help! I'm begging!

The ipod is not a backup device. The music sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The only exception is itunes purchases:  Without syncing:File>transfer Purchases
Copy everything from your backup copy of your  old computer to your new one.

  • "charging is not supported" when using the cable that came with ipod

I get an error message that "charging is not supported" when plugged in using the only cable that came with my ipod touch. My ipod will charge for 5 minutes then when I check on it, I notice this error on screen and the ipod has stopped charging.  I'm using the same charging method I have always used since I owned this ipod which has been over 2 years now and this only started happening recently. I believe this started when I upgraded to 5.0.1.

    - Look at both partsof the 30 pin dock connector.  Log for bent. mising or corroded contacts of orther abnormalities. The cable could be bad.  Try a new one.
    - Try a reset. Nothings is lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

  • APPLE resolve the issues that IOS4 causes iPod touch owners ASAP !

I remember there was a time we would say thank god at least there is one provider whose OS updates is not crap. Well guess what ? Apple proved they can ruin customers Ipod touches by bringing out the IOS 4.
Oh now don't get offensive that your iPod is ok and blah blah. Go read fourms filled with angry customers .
Now, Apple should sort this problems out ASAP !
What issues I have experienced ? Here is the list :
    - High reduction in WiFi performance and connectivity
    - Extreme reduction of battery life
    - Huge amount of memory usage resulting in slow response and frequent crash of applications
Before the upgrade I never had any problems with my IPod touch and I am a geek so dont come and tell me : Have you cleared your Safari cache ?? and stuff like that !!
What else has left for us to enjoy from iPod ?
Someone from APPLY customer service get in touch with me and explain...
I want to go back to firmware 3.3 without going through dodgy ways ! Yea I am a paying customer and want to be treated as one !

The WiFi issue I have no idea about.
But the reduction of battery life could be that you leave a bunch of apps running in the background with the multitasking feature, so when a bunch of different apps run at the same time all the time it could really drain your battery.
If you've ever gone to AppStore and updated your apps you can see below the title of an app it says the version number. Now that iOS 4.0 has been released the creators of the apps make updates to their apps so that they will be compaitable with iOS 4.0. When you update an app now you might see at the version number that it says iOS 4.0 in paranthesis.

  • TS4006 what if the person that found my ipod restored it to factory setting?

will i still be able to locate my ipod using the Find My Phone?

No.  If it is restored as a new iPhone it will erase everything on the phone, including your iCloud account and settings.

  • HT1212 The pc that I synced iPod with has died.

my daughter has forgotten the password for her ipod touch (approx 1 year old with camera).
in the meantime, the pc it was synced to has died.
I copied itunes folders from back up of old pc (on ext hdd) into iTunes folders on new laptop.
I connected iPod to new laptop and copied purchased apps from ipod.
itunes on laptop now looks like its got all her music and apps
i'm hoping to get the password reset on ipod without losing her apps and hopefully her photos & videos (on ipod only - not backed up) etc
Should I restore or use recovery mode or???
    thanks for any help.

    - Try connecting the iPod to the new computer and see if yo can do a backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
If you can then restore from backup. Note the backup does not included synced media like apps and music. You can redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
The apps have to be in your iTunes library when you restore from backup in order to have a place for the app data to go.
    - If you can't, can you you copy the backup from the old computer? It is located here:
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, and choose Run. Type %appdata% and click OK.
    Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata% and press theReturn key.
If you can then place it in the same location on the new computer and restoe from backup
    - Otherwise you will have to restore to factry settings/new iPod.
    - Place the iPod in recovery mode or DFU mode if requied to restore the iPod.

  • When is apple going to release the next software updater for ipod photo

    Hi,
Is this common to all products from apple that they will stop supporting/updating older or relatively older versions of their product family. The current ipod software updater is too old and it doesn't have the feature of volume control like the iPod video. I have been thinking about purchasing some other products from Apple but I suspect the same behaviour across the streams.
    -Ranjith

When you bought your iPod, I assume you studied the features it offered, decided that those features suit you and so you made your purchase. How does the fact that a newer iPod now offers different features somehow entitle you to more?
I'm not trying to be rude here, and I agree that it would be nice if Apple could offer some of these new features to an older iPod - but to just expect them to do it and admonish them for not just doesn't seem fair to me. What you want is something extra. If they provide it, great! If not, oh well - you still have all the features you originally paid for plus the podcast support that was added on.
    Cheers!

Sounds like your iPod is broken. Take it to Apple or someone else who repairs iPods and see if you can get it fixed, or get it replaced.

I updated my iPod and it erased everything i had on it.  How do i retrieve the songs that i bought from the iTunes store?  when i try to download/buy them again they tell me i have already purchased them do i want to buy them again?  I have authorized my computer but none of them are in my music now.

You buy one and only one download.
It is your responsibility to move/copy/backup your music.
Certainly you did not update your ipod without making sure that you had transferred anything purchased on the ipod to your computer and included it in your regular backup copy of your computer.

  • I had to recreate my itunes library and now, when i tried to sync my ipod, i got a warning that everything currently on my ipod would be cleared; how do i sync without losing the information currently on my ipod?

Recently I was forced to recreate my entire iTunes library.  My computer shut down unexpectedly and when I restarted it, my iTunes library was gone from the iTunes software.  After *finally* receiving some information from iTunes support about restoring the library (which meant I had to do exactly what I was afraid I would have to do--basically click-and-drag the entire contents from my hard drive back into the library), I wanted to update my iPod with the songs I'd added since the last updating.  And this is where more trouble began.
When I plugged in my iPod to sync it with the library, I got a warning message informing me that the library currently on the iPod would be cleared during the syncing, because the iPod can only be associated with "one" library.  Well, I did NOT want to do that because I wanted to retain the playcount and other information about the songs.  I was also hoping to keep the playlists currently on the iPod.
So, my first instinct was to contact iTunes support.  The only problem there was that going through the Support pages ended up with my needing to call Apple.  I'd attempted that when I first lost the library and was told by the Support associate that ALL iTunes help and support must be done online.  Ironic, huh?  I can't get iTunes support online until I call Apple support to get a direct web address to take me to the express lane help pages.  And, unfortunately, I made the mistake of uninstalling and reinstalling my AOL software and lost ALL of my e-mails with the iTunes support addresses in the process.
So basically, I need to know what to do here.  Is there a way to keep the current iTunes library on my iPod and still syncing with the recreated library or do I just need to accept the loss of the library currently on my iPod?  I may try to call Apple Support and get that iTunes online support address again but I'd really like to get this resolved more quickly.  The last time that I called and then I got the iTunes online help address, it ended up taking 2 days to get that help.

Hi. The two user tips both describe a sequence of steps that should get your library from the point where it threatens to wipe data from your device to where it is syncing normally, while recovering as much information as possible. It may still be necessary to wipe and reload the device but this should only take place once all the data that can be recovered has been recovered.
Doing step 1 of 8 and then complaining things aren't the way you want them to be yet strikes me as premature...
Since you appear to have all your media content, and we are discussing an iPod classic, not an iOS device, the main worries are already taken care of. What's left is ratings, playcounts, playlist membership and checked status. Since your device holds only part of your library at best you could only recover the missing data for the content that is on the device using third party tools.
Recreating the previous checked/unchecked status of every track in your library from where you are now may not be that easy. Syncing with selected playlists has many advantages, one of which would have been that you would have a named playlist that could have been retrieved by 3rd party software if you had used this method.
You haven't explained what caused your problem in the first place, but if you have a Previous iTunes Libraries folder holding old copies of your iTunes database (generated with each iTunes update) then it would be possible to restore the most recent of these and then update the library with any changes in your media folder.
BTW Apple doesn't offer free support for this kind of issue with iTunes.

  • How do i synch my pdf/books to my library. I was able to synch my ipod touch purchases by transferring them but can't figure out how to do my pdfs. Also why is my ipod picture greyed out-the one that lets my move the icons around.

How do i synch my pdf/books to my Itunes  library. I was able to synch my ipod touch app purchases by transferring them but can't figure out how to do my pdfs. Also why is my ipod picture greyed out-the one that lets my move the icons around.
I am afraid if i don't get the pdfs into my book library, i will lose them when i update to IOS 5-is that true?

thank you-i have to check into the authorization and the account-i gave my husband my old ipod when i updated last year so both at one time have been on this computer but as it stands, it only comes up with my device when i plug into Itunes.
i don't think i have any restrictions for installing apps although my normal way of doing it is to download from the ipod touch. i did find that all i had to do was right click on my device name and got the message to transfer my apps and then they showed up in my library. Also when i clicked the synch checkbox i was able to view the ipod touch picture without it being greyed out. after all that i was able toupdate to IOS 5 successfully except my videos and podcast, and pdfs  did not come over. This confuses me since i had dragged them over to my library to make sure that i had everything in my library and on my device. Not a big problem, since i just dragged them in itunes from my library to my device but sometimes i wonder if i understand the big picture:)
