The eraser tool and the background it produces?

1. Why does the eraser sometimes erase with white vs. the checkered background?
2. Does the checkerboard mean that the background will be fully transparent?
3. How do you switch between checkerboard and white backgrounds for the eraser?
Thanks in advance.

Erasing on a layer will produce transparency. Erasing on a flattened image will produce white (or the background color)

  • Problems with "Background Eraser Tool" and "Blur". The tools don't affect the whole area but just connect the start and the last points.

    Hello!
I have some issues with Photoshop CC 2014. The tools "Background Eraser Tool" and "Blur" won't work correctly. When I’m holding down the left mouse button and trying to erase or blur some area, the tools don’t affect the whole area but just connect the start and the last points – like drawing a line. These troubles exist with mentioned tools only, other tools work correctly.
I’ve restored each tool separately, restored all the tools together, installed new drivers for tablet, re-installed Photoshop and even Windows. Nothing helped. These tools worked correctly earlier with the same adjustments, but one day something went wrong.
How can I make the tools work correctly?
    Some information about my computer:
    • Notebook Lenovo Y560
    • Windows 7 Home Basic SP1 x64
    • Intel Core i5 2.53 GHz
    • 4Gb RAM
    • ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730 1Gb

    Hi,
I have a similar problem with the Background Eraser tool as well. It's the same both on my PC and on my laptop, both running Win 8.1 and PS CC2014. Would be great to have a solution for this. Did you managed to find a fix?

  • When i use eraser tool and take hand off mouse everything i erased reappears, does anyone know why?

When i am using the eraser tool and i take my hand off the mouse all the work i erased instantly reappears, does anyone know why? (i'm very new to illustrator). Thanks in advance for any help.

What Mike says but remember that the eraser is a very crude tool.
As a beginner you should begin by learning how the vector paths behave. Learn how to add and subtract anchor points and work with the bézier handles.

  • Eraser Tool and Pattern Stamp Tools Not Working Properly

I recently downloaded Photoshop CC on my Mac.  I've been using Photoshop for years and don't recall experiencing these problems.
When using the eraser tool in brush mode, I select the appropriate preset and opacity, flow etc.
Let's say I have the brush size set at 70px and hardness at 100%.  I erase, but the area erased is only 2/3rds of the actual size of the brush.
The same is true for the pattern stamp.  Only 2/3rds of the pattern stamp is working.
I've tried resetting to the tools and have search all over for similar problems in the forums but cannot find a solution.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Not being a Mac user I don't recall the specifics, but there is I believe a system setting for cursor size.  You may have it set larger than it should be to work with Photoshop.

  • My eraser tool acts weirdly. Everytime i use eraser tip on my pen, I cannot change the size of it with either tablet wheel or brackets. It changes the size of a brush tool instead. This was not happening in CS6.. Any ideas?

So this problem is annoying me. Is there any setting that has been added and this got messed up or is it a bug? In CS6 I could turn around my pen and use the eraser tip and change the size of it.
Now in CC 2014 I can't do it. I have to manually click the Eraser tool, and then change the size. I must say this is annoying as hell.

Reset the tool? What do you mean?
EDIT: Never mind, i found out how to reset. I Ctrl+Right clicked and reseted both brush and eraser but it still doesn't fix the issue. I also downloaded PS CS6 version and it works fine there.. So I don't know what it is. Must be a bug in CC 2014..

  • Basic eraser tool no longer produces transparency

Photoshop CS6: In the past, basic eraser tool produced transparent areas when run over the background layer. Now it producers background color. Magic eraser tool and background eraser tool work as they should, that is they produce transparency wherever I select. How do I get the basic eraser tool to behave?

    Photoshop CS6 for PC
Thanks for your replies. Resetting tools did not work. This is what happens when the three eraser tools are applied to background layer of a grayscale, .tif image with no other layers created.
Select basic eraser tool and apply to background layer background color (white in this case)  is applied to background layer wherever basic erase tool is applied to image as if it were the brush tool.
Select background eraser tool and apply to background layer. Transparency appears wherever background erase tool is applied to image.
Go back and reselect basic erase tool. Now, transparency appears wherever basic eraser tool is applied.
The same thing happens when the magic erase tool is selected, that is if I select it, use it and then go back and reselect the basisc erase tool, transparency results wherever basic erase tool is applied to image.
In the past, basic erase tool has worked with background layers.
    Complicated circumstances. Any other thoughts?

  • Eraser tool will not work on image

    hi,
I am completely new to this. I want to remove some areas of the image with the eraser tool. I don't know whats missing but when I select the eraser tool and hover the mouse pointer over art board, the pointer just changes to a pencil with a can't do icon over it.
This is what I have done up to this point. I "placed" an png image into Illustrator did a
    -> live trace
    -> live paint
-> selected the graphic and changed the outline colour
-> changed the fill colour to nothing
I have tried to export the image as a jpg and reimport it again, although the app allows me to erase parts I don't want, the transparency is lost. Does anyone know why this is happening and point me to the right direction.
    many thanks
    -Rrd

The eraser won't work on JPEGs at all.
After Live painting expand the art and then you should be able to erase.

  • Eraser tool is jagged

I am working on smoothing the edges of a graphic.  I know how to pick my eraser tool, the hardness, opacity, etc. So.....
I'm cleaning up this graphic nicely and I save the file.  I open it up later and the edges that I have already smoothed are all jagged now.  Also, as I continue to erase, the tool is still jagged.  It is a brush tool at 100% opacity and hardness, etc.  It is the same tool and setting that was working beautifully before I saved the project.
I have an image of the jagged (pixelated) graphic attached (I hope the jaggedness is visible in pic).... Remember, it wasn't jagged when I was working on it before.
    What do you think happened?
    Thank you!

Ok I haveinvestigated this and the OP is correct and Doug is correct as well…WHAT?
Yes indeed they are both correct.
You can call it a bug and I think you would be correct and you can also say it is not a bug and probably be correct as well.
This is the thing this will occur as the OP describes but it depends on the size of the dash or should i say the expanded object.
Exactly at what size (length) this problem disappears I have not been able to determine but if you made the dash like 8 points you would surely be fine.
Make it less than a point and you definitely have a problem. The eraser tool can only be 1 point minimum and that might be the problem.
Draw ay small shape less than a point in length and use the eraser tool and you will see what I mean.
So this is not dash line specific but a tolerance limit be it expected or by design or a bug is probably how you choose to look at it.
So what does this effect have on the workings or Illustrator to Adobe this was probably acceptable and if no one complains about it or describes it in itss true sense Adobe will either not be able to reproduce it or will they correct it.
I don't see it as a  bug as there are ways to accomplish and effect the same result in Illustrator I see it as a feature request to be able to effect smaller tolerance either with a new tool or with improvements to the current tool(s). In the case of a dash line it might be good o be able have an eraser tool that erased the path as an effect so that the dash did not reflow and the path seemed to be shortened. That would be a very handy tool since you would not need to expand the stroke and would have control over the length and size of the path.
But this type of eraser effect is probably not possible.
So if the Op and Scott see this as a bug I think they should mention the fact that his is a tolerance issue that needs to be addressed and they should come up with a good reason or two why it should be changed.
I am going to get breakfast.

  • CS3 eraser tool rotation

Hello: I like to use the eraser tool in illustrator to approximate a wood-cut or lino-cut effect and find that the rotation function for "nib" angle doesn't seem to work. For example, I double click on the eraser tool and bring up the dialogue. I set the angle to "rotation" using the pen tool. Then, when I use the pen and try to rotate, it doesn't. Is this not an really an option in CS3, are they just teasing me? Thanks for your help,
    Heidi

Yes, I've entered several different variables. I figured that 180 would give me the greatest range, but I've tried them all and neither the cursor nor the actual path varies with pen rotation. It might just be that the option is not available, even though it is listed as a choice in the dialogue box. Thank you so much for responding, btw.

  • Where is the background and magic eraser tool in photoshop cc?

In photoshop cc, when I choose to use eraser, I do not see the background or magic eraser tool options I see in videos, why? I am trying to learn to crop a face out of one picture and put it in another, and can't get what I need to do it. Is there a manual for photoshop cc?Thanks

Just hold down the mouse botton on the eraser tool for the pop up to show the background eraser tool. or shift+e repeatedly until the tool you want appears. This keyboard shortcut will switch between the multiple eraser tools in that popup menu. Once it is visible you can get back to that tool by using the e key by itself or clicking on it.
That said the background eraser tool is not required, it just makes it a bit easier. The normal eraser tool can erase the background if the background layer is unlocked. (assuming that is the layer you are working on) To unlock that layer just drag the padlock to the trashcan, or double click on that layer where you can name the layer if you choose and click ok.

  • How do I keep the paint and clone tools from removing the background on the composition?

I am trying to remove handling  wires from a Muppet video.  I double click on the composition (mov file) and  open the layer panel.  I can get the brush, clone and eraser to work  just fine and everything looks great until I play the preview.  I can  see all my strokes on the original movie composition. For example, the white showing in the frame below.
Since I  am very new to AE, I would imagine that I am missing a setting, but it  seems like I have tried all of them and nothing is working.
I am  using CS5, version 10.  Using the normal mode and the RGBA channel on  single frame. I appreciate any help you can provide.  Thanks!

    Hi Rick,
I am trying to remove handler wires that can be seen on Elmo.  This is an
assignment for an online class.  Unfortunately, I asked this question early
last week of the instructor and he has not responded.  We are required to use
the clone, paint or eraser for the exercise.  Thanks for the tip regarding the
CC Simple Wire Removal tool.  That will come in handy in the future.  The
original clip of the Muppets does have a black transparent background. I
changed the composition settings so that I could better see the wires.  Some
of the wires are just over the background and some are over a part of his
clothes.  I can see my strokes when I toggle the transparency grid.  I will
try the clone tool on the alpha channel and see if that works.  If that is not
what I should be doing, please let me know.  Thanks for your help.
I'm not really clear on what you are trying to do. If you're painting on RGBA
and you paint with a white brush you will end up with a white stroke on the
layer. All channels will be white.

If you're painting with a white stroke using Alpha then you will paint white
on the alpha channel so there will be nothing changed on the layer.

If you are painting with a black stroke using Alpha then you will paint a hole
in the layer which will allow the layer below to show through, but if you're
painting on RGB or RGBA then you'll end up with a black stroke on the image.

If you want to paint out the wires then you must either use the clone tool or
make the brush the same color as your background. It looks like you have a
cream colored background so your paint tool must be the same color. If you
have wires over any other color, say over the body of one of the Muppets, then
you must carefully use the clone tool. Your screenshot looks like you're just
painting with a white brush. I'm assuming that your Comp BC color is white
(not usually a good idea) and that there is really no hole in your footage.
You can check that out by clicking on the Toggle Transparency Grid or by
dropping another layer below your footage.

Another option to remove the wires would be to use the CC Simple Wire Removal
tool. It works amazingly well on some shots.

  • I am having trouble using the clone tool and eraser tool.

I am not able to see my brush get bigger as I increase the size.  Once I clone an area, it selects what I want to clone, but it won't paste it on the photo.  I cannot also use my eraser tool.  It does not show the line that usually is shown in white before it erases the area. I am working on a background copy.

Suggest that you reset all tools to default.
Look for this box icon with lines in it on a tool's option bar. This is for PSE v. 12 and perhaps for v.11 (I'm not certain about 11)
For earlier versions of PSE, look for a little arrow, top left, on the option bar

When talking about a specific image posting the image may be useful.
One can use a Layer Mask and add a white Layer underneath.
