The Esata | MyBook Mystery

Hello everyone.
So....it is apparent that there is some sort of issue with esata cards that use Silicon Image's chipset. I have tried three different types of cards, all with the same issue.
Here's the weird part....this issue doesn't seem to affect my esata Western Digital My Book. However, I cannot use any of my RAID esata setups without getting a kernel panic or the system freezing on me in some way.
WHY IS THIS??? No idea. Why would a cheap Western Digital My Book work flawlessly but a nice expensive G-Tech RAID crashes every time????
The mystery continues. I would love to hear from someone with an answer to all this. It really annoys me that Cal digit and Sonnet mention the cards I've used as being compatible with Snow Leopard after all this trouble.
Hope to get an answer soon before all my drives die.

Here's my confusion.
Links to these companies that claim their cards work:
Under FASTA-2e's driver section on this page:
http://www.caldigit.com/support.asp
This mentions "Snow Leopard Tested" (look for note "7")

I am aware of Apple's incompatible list but hopefully we can all work together to make this world a better place and fix this issue.
Thanks all!

  • P45D3 Platinum - does the esata (external) have port multiplier ability?

    Hi,
have the MSI P45D3 and just bought the Icydock mb561us-4s (http://www.icydock.com.tw/English/mb561us-4s_frame.html)
which requires the esata to have port multiplier function.
Does the esata have it.....if yes....please help with instructions to enable it.

    Hi,
the onboard eSATA port is hosted by a JMicron JMB362 Chipset, which (according to the JMicron product specifications) supports the following:

  • Partitioning options for the WD MyBook external drive

I purchased the WD MyBook Essential 2TB external drive. I would like to use it for TimeMachine backups, as well as my Windows machine. I think I will need to partition it for Mac and Windows machines. What option should I use in the Disk Utility partition options (there are 4 options). The first option is for Intel based Mac. The last option simply says "DOS". The Disk Utility seems to want to use the same option for both partitions. Is there a way to partition with two different options?

When you partition with DU the two partitions will be the same format, but after they have been created you can return to the partitions and reformat each individual partition differently. So I would set the partitions up as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then later connect to the partition that you wish to use with your Windows machine and reformat that partition with a Windows utility in the best format for the version of Windows you prefer.

  • How do I get my Macbook Pro to recognize the esata connected drive?

I have connected and the system seems to recognize the ExpressCard esata controller adapter card, but the system doesn't seem to see the drive.  I have restarted the system with no change.  The drive is formated for Mac.  Not sure what else I can do?

The card seems to be recognized by the system.  The drive is recognized when I have it connected via USB.  I may try to replace the card and see if that is the issue.  Thanks.
Again, I think you're on the right track, but before replacing it, give the following advice from AussieDJ a try (boot into 32 bit mode), whether it's the same card or not (there are definitely things "out there" that do not yet work on 64 bit systems):
The firmware I had previously would only work in 32-bit, but I now have the updated 64-bit compatible firmware. I would suggest the OP try booting into 32-bit mode to see if it works. (Hold the numbers 3 + 2 while booting)
Does the box come up top right when you plug the card in btw?

  • Has anyone used Mountain Lion with Time Machine for the WD MyBook Live Duo

This NAS is working with OSX Lion.  But since I had trouble moving up to Lion with my previous WD NAS drive, I want to make sure that it works.
    Thanks

Upgraded to Mavericks yesterday.  Seems to have gone well except for one thing.  My computer will not recognized my WD MyBook Live 3T and thus Time Machine will not work with it.  My wife's MacBook Pro is still running 10.6.8 and her computer is still working properly and doing back ups.  Called Western Digital Tech support and Apple Tech Support.  Not much helpl there.  I attempted to download and use the newest sofware (during Mavericks installation I did get a warning that the old WD software was not supported).  However, one of the first steps is getting the software to scan for the backup drive.  No dice.  The computer is not recognizing its existence at all in any place you might look.  So I am stuck and frustrated at this point.  I have plugged and unplugged things.  The MyBook Live is hooked up directly by ethernet cable to an Airport Extreme router.  My computer is hooked up by ethernet cable to the router and my wife's laptop uses the WiFi connection.  Apple Tech suggested a direct hookup to my computer.  My computer still would not recognize it.

  • I saturated all the available iPad (3rd. generation) screen space (home screens or desktop space) with apps, and the apps that got bumped out of the last screen, mysteriously disappeared? Where are those missing quick lauch app icons?

Running my 3rd generation iPad on iOS 7.0.4, I saturated all the available iPad screen space (which would be the 15 home screens or desktop worth of space) with apps, and the apps that got bumped out of the last screen space mysteriously disappeared. Where are those missing quick lauch app icons now? The apps are still installed and can be searched/accessed through the finder, but they no longer have a user friendly access. How can I solve this problem?

Hi Hexonxonx, thanks for trying to help, but next time please read the entire discussion, in oder to better comprehend what is being asked. The reason being is that your answer added nothing to what had already been mentioned.
Like I said, I was aware it was possible to access the apps through the finder, but the question revolved around how to recover the quick launch app icons for certain vanished apps.
Wow, kind of a snotty response to someone who was taking their own time to offer help.  Whether you thought it was helpful or not, didn't deserve such an unkind retort.  Maybe when you realize we all just users here trying to help others like you, who have issues and we don't get anything in return for the countless hours some people here spend offering that assistance, you'll maybe be a little less quick to be critical.
    Just sayin.......
Oh and Meg offered the right answer.  Put your Apps in Folders, which will create extra space for the apps which have disappeared.

  • Am I correct that Quantum does not support the eSATA external drives?

I bought an eSATA external drive when they first became available and I get a huge amount of storage space (something like 120 hours of HD).
Can you mix and match your old DVR with the new Quantum DVR?  In other words, could I keep my old one up in the bedroom or is quantum all or nothing?
The 6 channels at once thing is appealing - particularly during football season ... but going backwards on recording capacity is a dealkiller, regrettably.

So I've renewed my FIOS contract.  If/when the six-channel DVR starts supporting eSATA, I'll reconsider switching to it.  If the port is on there, it's a shame that they're not enabling it.  I guess that they want an upcharge for extra capacity rather than letting you buy it yourself.
The VMS boxes are in a sense using older firmware such as the guide being the older version then what the multi room boxes use right now which is why the ports arent enabled yet. I'm sure once they release a new firmware upgrade they will be enabled.

  • How good are the WD MyBook Studio Ed. Refurbished Replacements?

I have a Western Digital MyBook Studio Edition for Mac - External Hard Drive that is 2 years old, and has started to have problems.
It keeps running constantly and gets very warm. I unplug the cables from it, let it cool for a few minutes, replug the cables, and do a forced backup.... but the next scheduled backup, it starts up and will keep running for hours without doing the backup.
So I unplug it again, let it rest, replug, then do a forced backup, and everything repeats itself as previously mentioned.
I called WD Support this morning, and she said that I could send it in, and they would send me a refurbished replacement. I have read on other forums (tools, etc.) that people send items in for a replacement, and they get back a refurbished unit that is all banged up, and doesn't work properly.
My question is... how good is the WD refurbished replacements that they send back. Are they in good condition? Does anyone have any experience with WD on this?
I have even thought of just getting a new external HD from another company, (G-Drive, LaCie, etc), but I have seen mixed reviews on them. I like the G-Drive Solid State (no moving parts) but that is over $500.... too rich for my blood.
    Any recommendations on either question.
    Thanks,
    Jim

From what I've read on the internet WD offer poor customer service and their products are of low quality. Certainly I have experienced first-hand many WD hard drives failing, mostly with the dreaded click click click. I've only known two or three Seagates go this way in all the years I've been using hard drives (pretty much since the early days of 120MB).
It may be expensive, but I highly recommend the ReadyNAS Duo as a backup solution and / or as general network storage. I have one set up with two 1TB Seagate NS drives in mirrored mode and it works very well. Seagate NS drives are enterprise-standard, designed for use in RAID hardware where they will be in close proximity to one another, Seagate AS drives are not designed for this purpose and so may fail in this situation. Other hard drive manufacturers make enterprise-grade drives too, I'm guessing that the ones WD use in their MyBook products are not these drives though which might explain why there are so many failures. The enterprise-grade drives typically cost about £20 more but I think for reliable backup purposes it's well worth the extra expense.

  • "Error Disk too Slow" Macbook Pro 2011 - Maverick and Yosemite - The Great Grand Mystery Unfolds!!!

    Hey everybody,
Logic Pro X user here, have a late 2011 Macbook Pro, upgraded to 16gb of ram, 2.8ghz intel core i7, running latest version of Mavericks and more recently on a separate partition I tried Yosemite with a  clean install of only Logic Pro X.
I use Apogee Quartet as my audio interface, I have a OWC Mercury Elite Firewire 800 external drive that I record to, all LPX files are on my internal drive.
Before Mavericks I had 0 issues with this setup, no with just one sole drummer track, or one single audio or software track, I get the various disk too slow errors after a few seconds.
I have tried reinstalling LPX, I tried a clean partition with nothing but Logic Pro on it (both Mavericks and Yosemite).
I have reset my PRAM and used Apple Hardware diagnostics as well as memtest (i think it was called) and even reverted back to my old original RAM that came with the computer.  All hardware tests passed, I have verified and repaired disks from disk utility as well as from the recovery partition.
I have worked with Apple a bit over the phone doing these things, I have also read just about every thread on this pervasive issue.  And its ruining my experience as a user.  I absolutely loved Logic on Mountain Lion, no issues whatsoever! I'm considering reverting back to it actually.
On a side note I also have a HDMI Tv connected through the thunderbolt display, and a self powered USB hub that I connect my wireless mouse, iPhone cable and WD MY passport drive (which I only use for Time Machine).
I'm basically at my wits end and open to anybodies suggestions, I even tried resting the SMC and several other things advised in these forums.
I'm Stil under Apple Care and wondering if going into them is my only hope left.
I find that garageband acts the same, but I have no other system issues! its so bizarre, performance on all other programs is totally fine, its only when I want to record that I get issues.
For the record I do have some 3rd party VTS (Arturia V collection, EZ drummer 2 and AMplitube) but when I did the clean partition they weren't there and I still had the disk to slow error, so I'm not convinced its because of those.
Also Since the partition I obviously have played with my storage but I still have 75 gas of space on the mavericks partition (out of 500gb ) and on Yosemite partition I have 125 gbs available and on my Firewire external drive I have about 150gb left on a 500gb drive, so I'm not convinced its a space issue either (especially since before Mavericks Mountain Lion seemed to work just fine.)
HELP! Please help...I'm so exhausted trying to fix this on my own, and admittedly I've run to the end of my own capacity and don't know where to go from here.
Thank you for any suggestions, sorry for the long post, and if I have left anything out please let me know, this is my first post.

And yes I did upgrade my apogee drivers to the recent ones they just released.

  • The JBuilder package mystery

    Dear all,
I've come across an interesting JBuilder problem that is slightly different to the other ones I've seen on this forum when i searched
    Background:
I've been making an address book program for my computer to help me learn java and up to now i've just compiled it at the DOS prompt. To help learn a bit more about java, I created a package (called JLgeneric) to store some of the classes I am using in this project that I might use on another program (for instance one class that does some interesting things with strings). With a little messing around with CLASSPATH in Windows XP, and learning about how to import packages and the like i finally got it working. Please note, I put my JLgeneric packages (i.e. directory) in a completely different place on my hard disk to where I put the source files.
Now I've decided to start using JBuilder rather than javac as I think it will be more useful in the future. I can already use it to compile simple java programs - it is fine with these. But, using it to compile my addressbook program it comes up with several errors (66!!). The source of these errors is (I think) that it can't find my JLgeneric package, even though the javac (the java compiler at the command prompt) finds it ok.
    The Problem
So my question is this, if I have my own package "JLgeneric" on a completely different place in my hard disk to the source files, how do I tell JBuilder where to find it. I tried adding its path via PROJECT|PROPERTIES|LIBRARIES but when I tried to compile the project it still didn't manage to find JLgeneric.
My packages are found using javac so why doesn't it work with JBuilder?!
    Any help is much appreciated
    Thanks
    James

My packages are found using javac so why doesn't it
work with JBuilder?!Because the classpath you are using with javac is different than the one JBuilder is using.
With javac, you are either creating a CLASSPATH environment variable (which by the way isn't a good way to go if you are) or are passing -classpath [your classpath here] command-line arguments to it.
JBuilder doesn't use the CLASSPATH environment variable, and you don't pass command-line arguments to it, so it uses project settings to determine the classpath to use. It sounds like you're on the right track (mentioning using PROJECT|PROPERTIES|LIBRARIES), but apparently just haven't done it correctly. Keep playing with it - this is not really a Java question, per se.

Anybody know why favicons from other site folders on a local

  • The Grey Shading Mystery

Alright, I see that there are some other people running into versions of this. I installed the phone, activated it and synced some of my music from my Itunes library onto the phone. What I noticed however is that all the music listed underneath my iphone is grey. It plays on the phone, which is fine, but my question is, how do I delete songs from my phone, if I cannot click and select any of the grey listings when I am hooked up to my computer?

I figured out how to delete but still am clueless about how to play the shaded files. The way you delete tunes is through whatever folder you used to synch the songs. For example I have all the music that I want synched under the purchase folder under iTunes Music Store. Whenever I delete or add tunes then synch it reflects under the summary screen for iPhone. They really need to get on this issue, I don't like synching music, I never did it with any of my previous iPods. They need to bring back click-and-drag, the manual feature. Hang in there!

  • The Logic Plugins Mystery! :)

    hi guys.
finished a beautiful project last night. woke up this morning, opened the project - only to find out that it's gone weird. as if someone has been playing around. some effects are missing. some tracks have absolutely different effects. some muted effects are now unmuted! etc, etc...
tried to open the latest project backup file and it sounds fine, but the actual project has gone mad.
    any explanation to this???

    Several possibilities:
No.1: Copperworm plague. Use Acid bug spray (caution, may damage your Mac's interiors, too).
No.2: Supernova explosion 3.5 Billion Years ago in a galaxy far, far away. A stray neutrino particle wreaked havoc on your file.
No.3: The good old sh... happens
No.4: Little sister? They can be quite sneaky.
