The Eureka Moment: Using Backups to 'archive' projects w/o their media

Hi
I've posted a few discussions re how to rid myself of many projects and snapshots that have accumulated on this feature-length doc, and to my mind and eye seem to be hampering the performance of my 15" MBP 2.66. I've been getting the spinning wheel and elongated pauses while a dropdown window says a bunch of projects and snapshots that are not open and are unwanted are nevertheless being loaded. But I don't want to move or copy the accompanying media.
After pondering this for a good bit, I'm thinking copying and archiving backups to another drive might well be ideal since, I believe, they are the database without the media. And if at some point I decide maybe there was something in a project editing I should reexamine there it will be in the backup which I can open, check  and if desired, copy to my current library.
Seem reasonable?

Hi elmerlang,
Relying on the automatic backups is not recommended as they are automatically deleted when they are more than several days old. For more information about managing storage locations, please refer to the "Manage storage locations" section of the Final Cut Pro X online user manual below:
Final Cut Pro X Help - Manage Storage Locations - Consolidate media files for a library
http://help.apple.com/finalcutpro/mac/10.1/#ver7db6ffe77
When working in Final Cut Pro X 10.1.2, keep a dedicated event for current projects, and move old projects to another dedicated event. This should also help with performance as you will only load projects when they are needed.
I hope this information helps ....

  • Error using an imported archive created with Eclipse

    Hi people,
i have a strange issue, and i have no clue where to search for an answer (except here )
In the past i used an imported archive for a java mapping in the Repository. The customers wants a change in this. I exported the imported archive, modified it in Ecplise, and imported it again. When i see the code of the imported archive, i can see my change.
When i test my Interface Mapping, i see the result of the old settings. Somehow, the new coding is not used.
Does this sounds familiair so someone? And/Or has anyone a good tip for me?
    Thanks in advance,
    Peter

Try deleting and recreating ur Interface mapping.
Also make sure u activate all objects.

  • Archiving Projects that use Nested Sequences

I'm looking for some help using Project Manager to archive projects that use nested sequences.
I work at the University of Michigan, we are wrapping up a study that is based on files from many Premiere Pro projects.  Each project started with 150 to 160 min of video footage from two cameras.
Of this we have edited down to a 10 – 20min finished sequence containing footage from both cameras as a two-camera shoot.  I want to archive eachproject (to save HDD space) retaining only the used sections of footage in thePPro archived project, allowing us to make minor edits to the projects.
My workflow has been to rely heavily on nested sequences throughout each project.  From two sequences containing all of the footage from Camera1 and Camera2 all the way to the final cut sequence everything is dependent on a series of interim nested sequences. So the last sequence “Final” is based/linked on the very first sequences.  When I attempt toarchive this using Project Manager the nested sequence edits are not recognized as individual clips.  I either end up with all of the original footage or no footage.  I’m not sure how (if?) I can archive these projects in a way to eliminate all but the final file footage segments with 30 frame handles.
Can anyone point me in the right direction or offer some advice?

    figure for $1000/terabyte drive
Alot less than that, you can get a good Dual HD enclosure for $100 and probably less than that, and 500 Gig Drives for about $250 a piece, so assume about $600 without shopping too hard.
I find it is alot easier to use HDs, and have a couple of copies for important projects. You can use the other items as another backup (never can have too many) and going to be easier than having to recapture, especially if there was dropped framess or timecode issues. Guess it comes down too how often do you have to go back annd re-edit a wedding DVD once it is done, and what will make your like easier when it is said and done, but if it happens, on the HD just open it up, otherwise you have to recapture the tapes which is a couple of hours at least it sounds like.
As to archieve DVDs, who knows. There have been claims that the original CDs were to last 100 years, some of the ones I bought when they first came out started to go a few years ago. Same for some other media.

  • I am trying to restore files created using Backup in Tiger.  How do I do this on a Snow Leopard machine which is connected to the Tiger external drive?

I have an external disk that was used on Tiger iMac. I used Backup to save files. Now that I have this external drive connected to a new IMac running SnowLeopard, how do I restore files?

Backup 3.2 is still usable if you have a MM account and can download the upgrade.  Otherwise you'll need to restore them via Tiger.
If the backup is not archived, then the individual files may be accessible directly.

  • Sharing managed media between editors - using FCX lib backups to share projects

    Okay, here is my problem...
I started a huge FCX project, hours and hours of XDCAM footage imported and a number of projects created. I imported using managed media option and share with another editor, so we have two complete and separate FCX suites going (with identical media/video clip folders)
Problem is, when he finishes a cut or a project and wants to give it to me to do further work -- there is not way in FCX 10.1.3 to export a project over to me without also exporting the associated media clips. THAT MEANS A 3 HOUR EXPORT, as FCX is sending the 1-hr project plus all the huge media files dealing with that project. Do this a few times a day and you can see the issue.
If I used external media to begin with, the problem would be solved but I didn't as FCX documentation makes it seem as exporting and sharing projects is with managed media easy (managed is the import method Apple seems to prefer).
WELL IT'S NOT EASY SHARING USING MANAGED MEDIA. There is no option as far as I can see, to export  a project to someone and have them re-link the media on their own system (export with no associated media). I think several versions of FCX ago, you were able to do this.
So, this makes sharing and exporting projects between two editors even when they are using the same identical media folder on their own individual drives not practical!
Is there a way around this?
I'm wondering if I can use the FCX backups as a way to share projects?
I DON'T WANT TO CONSOLIDATE MY MEDIA, it would take a week.
    Any help appreciated.
    Moe

Okay, I'll give is a shot.
I tried consolidating a week ago and FCX started doing stuff for like 5 minutes and I stopped the process. Maybe I need to give it a bit more time if it's creating links to all the media. I thought it would somehow move the media, but if it's just generating links that's great and I might have stopped it just before it actually finished the job.
    I'll try it.
    Thanks.

  • Can I recover the database to the current time using a backup control file?

Can I recover the database to the current time using a backup control file? How far can I recover this database?
I have an Oracle 10g(10.2.3) database on RHEL4.3 system.
I have lost all the current control files and all the online redo logs, archived redo logs and all other files are OK.
Now I have to recovery this database using a backup control file.
Can I recover the database without any data lost?

    If
    a) it was a Shutdown Abort or an Instance Crash (i.e. backgrounds died on detecting loss of redo logs),
    b) redo logs are lost
    c) data files are intact
    You'd have to
    a) Restore datafiles
    b) Do an Incomplete Recovery to the last available ArchiveLog

  • Why cant the controlfile be in sync, when using backup controlfile

    hi all,
i understand a few point ...from a dba friend of mine..
you need a resetlog to sync the datafile headers and the controlfiles
    1) you need a resetlog when doing incomplete recovery
    2) you can recovery completely using a backup controlfile provided you have all the necessary archived logs and online redo logs.
    3) but in order not to do resetlog after 2) , you must re-create the controlfile
    my questions are
q1) are the following point above true ?
*q2)  why cant oracle update the controlfile when recovering using the backup controlfile ? in that case, i do not need to recreate a controlfile , isnt it ?
    Rgds,

    hi hermant,
q1) why would i need to open the database with resetlog ?
Yes. i am using a backup controlfile, but i have all the archived and online redologs till point of failure ?
The purpose of a resetlog is to sync the controlfile and datafile headers , isnt it ? but i do not need to sync, as i have all the latest applied
    am i right ?
If you use RECOVER DATABASE USING BACKUP CONTROLFILE in this case control file type is *"BACKUP"* but not *"CURRENT"* due to even you have all archivelogs and online logs you have to open database RESETLOGS statement.Actually after applying all archive and online redo logs ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS internally sync and "Say" to control files "RECOVER FINISHED".Because CF type is BACKUP.
q2) You need to OPEN RESETLOGS. You can choose to create controlfile OR not create controlfile (i.e. open with the backup controlfile that was used for the RECOVER).
If you do a CREATE CONTROLFILE it has to be CREATE CONTROLFILE RESETLOGS, followed by ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS.
in what circumstances, would i need to re-create the controlfile when i can still use the backup controlfile ? as in any case, i would still need to resetlog.
    Rgds,
NoobIf you have backup controlfile then do not need recreate control files. And you need use backup control file.If you lost all backup of control files and copies then or you want change database name then you can use RECREATE CONTROL FILE again.

I recently had some 8mm film transferred to DVD. I am trying to edit the film clips using Premier Elements 4.0. so I can reburn the films on a single BluRay disc. Some of the film clips copy into the project but others don't. I tried copying the VOB filed onto my hard drive and then changing the file extensions on the VOB files to MPEG but this was no help. Some of the VOB files contain numerous film clips but my software does not appear to be able to recognize them as such. I need to know if replacing my old Premier Elements with the new Version 13 would solve this problem or not. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    What do you have now.....
What computer operating system do you have?
We can go into the finer points of source and your intentions, but for now it would appear that you are using SD 4:3 source media to get to a HD 16:9 result. Lots to discuss in this regard.
What was given to you on the DVD disc? DVD-VIDEO 4:3 or something else?
If DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc, you should expect to find on the disc a folder named VIDEO_TS. That is your target for your video files.
If you were given a DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc, then all you want from it are the video files, specifically
VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB, and so on through that series until possibly getting to
VTS_02_1.VOB, and so on. How many files you have beyond the VTS_01_1.VOB file will depend on the size of the DVD-VIDEO.
Does the above scenario apply to you?
The alternative might be someone giving a DVD disc (data disc) which contains just the VTS files mentioned which were copied from
the VIDEO_TS Folder. So, you do not get the whole VIDEO_TS Folder, just the essential video files. Does this scenario apply to you.
I see no need to replace your Premiere Elements 4 with a later version unless you have a huge project and need a later version that will be a 64 bit application running specifically on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit computer.
Consider...Premiere Elements 4 and if you have DVD-VIDEO on DVD....
    1. Place the DVD disc in the burner tray
    2. Open Premiere Elements 4 and set the project preset for NTSC DV Standard (assuming you are working in a NTSC setup)
    3. Go to
    Get Media
"DVD, Digital Camera, Mobile Phone, Hard Drive Camcorder, Card Reader"
"Adobe Premiere Elements - Media Downloader" and its Advanced dialog.
Set the Source in the latter dialog for the drive which has your DVD disc inserted in its tray
You should see your VTS_01_1.VOB thumbnail in the "Adobe Premiere Elements - Media Downloader" Advanced dialog.
With this VOB selected, click on Get Media to get the file from there into the project.
    Should work fine.
Complications may be involved if the people who processed your footage gave you something other what is described above.
Please review and consider, and then we can plan our project strategy accordingly.
    Thank you.

  • I am setting up a time machine backup to a external Hard drive.  I want to backup by Mac book Pro running OSX 10.8.5. I would like to Partition the disk and use one partition for Time machine backups and the other for my Lightroom backups. How to do this?

I want to create a two partition disk. One partition for time machine, the other for Lightroom backup. Currently Time Machine is using the entire drive and it is doing the intial encryption and is about 29% complete after two days.  I've decided that I want to turn encryption off and partition the disk. So I do I start over?

With the external drive attached, open Finder>Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility.  Select the external drive from the list in the left side panel of the DU window.  In the main window panel, click Partition in the buttons top center of that panel.
Select the number of partitions you want and adjust their sizes.
For the first partition, click to highlight the partition, then select the format, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then the partition table as GUID [both of those are the defaults].  Click Apply and it will ask to confirm and erase and format that partion...oh, give the partition a name, like Backup.
Then repeat those steps for the second partition..and remember to name it...something like Lightroom.
Close Disk Utilitty and you are ready to send TM to the one partition, and do your backup of Lightroom to the second partition.

Yes you can make multiple backups on one hard drive, for example if you’ve 1TB hard drive installed in your PC and you’ve two Mac Machines with 500GB drive each then you just make two backup images with size of 500GB each.

Migration Assistant (Finder > Applications > Utilities > Migration Assistant) is the tool that you would use to restore backups from older Macs to another Mac.
Details are here:   http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html   The same info applies for Mavericks and Yosemite.   If you are saying that this is a "no go".....where are you getting stuck?  What error messages do you see?

  • Can I use the time capsule as backup and hard disk at the same time?

    Hi.
I want to buy a time capsule.
I wondered, if I can use the time capsule as backup (over time machine) and as a hard disk at the same time?
If I buy the 2TB time capsule, I wanted to use 1TB for the backup and 1TB for hard disk.
    Is this possible?
    Best wishes
    Sophie

It is not recommended.. the problem being anything stored on the TC only is not backed up and cannot be backed up by the TC itself or Time Machine. So what are you going to do about back.. the TC can and do die suddenly.. and the cost of recovery can be huge.
See Q3 here for the semi-right way to do it if you must.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
You can plug a USB drive into the TC and use that for files.. but note, its speed is poor.. fine for wireless as wireless is even slower but you will really notice it if you expect the drive to be as fast as the internal.. it will be a fraction of the internal drive speed. 1/2 write and 1/3 read aprox.

Since downloading Firefox 4, I am having problems archiving gmail conversations from my inbox view (either one or several conversations) as it says "No Conversations Selected" when I have selected one or several. Also, when I go to enter a new event in google calendar, I have to click the cursor in the box to type the event (it used to let me just start typing) or else it flips out and starts jumping to day view or another month. Does anyone know how to fix either of these?

I have had this problem; but while trying to fix another problem, I reset my preferences for Firefox and it fixed this problem as well. To reset preferences, follow this link: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Resetting%20preferences

  • HT201250 How do I find out what portable drive was the drive I used for Time Machine Backup?

Hi, I have 10.7.4 and need to figure out what drive I was using for Time Machine Backup.  I have three drives and I have connected each of them to my macbook pro, but I get an error, "Time Machine Error, The backup disk is not available" when I hit the time machine icon on the top of the screen and the "backup delayed" prompt.  If I try Back up Now I get message, "Time Machine could not complete the backup.  Back up disk is not available."  I am trying to figure out what the time machine back up would actually look like as a file on the drives but I don't see a folder/file name Time Machine.  If I enter Time Machine I can see in the far right column, in purple, the last back up date (Sept. 12, 2012), but when I hit it nothing happens.  In the Time Machine preference box the select disk has, in red and to the right, "Delayed" with an "i" within a circle, and the option indicates, "Next backup: when disk is connected."
I know I have a years worth of backups on one of the three drives, but I can't figure out how the heck to find them or how to determine what was the last drive I used for the backups within Time Machine.  Help please.
