The Fairchild Patent Notebooks: A dinner presentation with Computer History Museum's David Laws

Last night was the annual IEEE-CNSV (Consultants Network of Silicon Valley) Dinner and the guest speaker was David Laws, who currently serves as the Semiconductor Curator at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View. Laws spoke about an incredible artifact collection—perhaps the semiconductor industry’s single most important collection by far: The Fairchild Patent Notebooks. Among the many innovations documented in these 1334 hand-written notebooks are Jean Hoerni’s invention of the planar process and Robert Noyce’s extension of that process to connect multiple components on one silicon die to create the modern monolithic integrated circuit. These notebooks speak for the people who launched Silicon Valley, in their own words.
Laws is a semiconductor industry veteran having worked for Fairchild, Litronix, AMD, and others so he has a deep-set feel and an apparent fondness for the subject. The Fairchild patent notebooks made their way to the museum in a most circuitous way. They came from Texas Instruments, which purchased National Semiconductor in 2011. National took possession of the notebooks when it acquired Fairchild in 1987.
Of the many notebook pages Laws projected during his dinner speech, I particularly noted three for this blog:
December 1, 1957: Jean Hoerni documents his ideas for silicon wafer oxide insulation and masking—the fundamental semiconductor planar process. He got the idea in the shower one morning. But Hoerni didn’t use silicon-dioxide insulation to create ICs at first—that would take another three years to realize. He did it to save Fairchild from oblivion.
By 1959, Fairchild had $8 million in contracts for high-reliability, double-diffused mesa transistors, many of which were destined to go into Minuteman missile guidance computers. There was a problem however. One in 10,000 transistors would short out if tapped lightly. Tapping dislodged a sliver of metal inside of the transistor can and the metal would unfortunately short a junction in the unpassivated transistor—bye, bye transistor. Hoerni’s oxide insulation made the mesa transistor impervious to such faults.

Witnessed by Robert Noyce
January 23, 1959: Robert Noyce invents the metal interconnect layer needed to connect multiple devices on the same silicon die. This is the breakthrough needed to make monolithic integrated circuits.
Page from Robert Noyce’s Patent Notebook extending Hoerni’s planar process to an IC—a simple full-adder logic circuit built from a diode matrix. January 23, 1959.
October 8, 1962: PhD physicist Frank Wanlass documents the basic CMOS structure that now dominates the semiconductor industry. He stumbles onto an unusual behavior of the device but does not pursue it. It later turns out to be oxide tunneling and charge storage, the basic phenomena underlying EPROM storage.
The ideas and innovations in these notebooks, in conjunction with the patents developed from this work, constitute the archaeological history of the semiconductor industry. Patents have become extremely important in the semiconductor industry. Last year, when Xilinx celebrated its 30th anniversary, the press release mentioned the company’s 3500+ patents and 60 industry firsts in addition to celebrating the company’s three decades in business.
The Computer History Museum has an active campaign to raise the funds needed to restore and conserve these 1334 Fairchild patent notebooks. Here’s a video about that campaign:

With the new version of Firefox, "organize bookmarks" is no longer present under the Bookmarks menu. Therefore, I am unable to export my bookmarks.

I found it. "Organize Bookmarks" is now "Show All Bookmarks".

  • Presentations with Video in Kiosk mode on iPad

    Hi
I'm looking for a way to show presentations on the iPad that have a mix of slides and embedded video, and to prevent naive users from accidentally exiting the presentation.
What I have is a Keynote presentation with couple of static introductory slides, then a series of slides with 3-5 minute videos on each, then a series of static slides at the end. I tried Keynote on the iPad but it was unintuitive to navigate even for an experienced iPad user: it is too easy to exit View mode and return to Edit mode. Someone new to the iPad often makes unclear gestures and random taps.
There was no obvious way to control the video playback either, eg when flipping backwards through the slides. I could work around this by adding a "click to play" image as the first few frames of each video...
Nice to have (but not essential) is a way to lock the user into the application, so that if they accidentally or deliberately press the Home button it will stay in the Presentation.
I've hunted for ages on the App Store but not found anything suitable. Your suggestions welcome.
    Thanks for your help

Still not clear to me. It is an interesting challenge and I'd like to help figure it out. It'll be a learning for both of us. My questions are...
What is "Kiosk mode" and how is it indicated?
Do you want the video playing (and visible) behind the picture slides?
Will the picture slides be appearing and disappearing individually (i.e. there will not be more than one cast member visible at any one time)?
Are the 35 picture slides of 35 cast members with their names?
Do you have two distinct videos?
I am still of the opinion that the videos will be the only two slides in this presentation (with their respective lengths indicated) and that the pictures of the cast members will be placed on these slides as inserts and they will enter and exit using build-in and build-out parameters which will add up to the total time of the videos.
Like I said, it's a learning experience for both of us. Are you up for it?

It sounds like either your hard drive or the SATA cable that connects it to the motherboard are failing. This could be heat related in your case, which is why you see it after it runs awhile. You can take it to the Genius Bar for a free evaluation. If you decide to test it yourself, I usually suggest moving the hard drive to an external enclosure. If it works there for awhile, the cable is probably the issue.

When uploading my formatted resume to my Apple Jobs profile, I am always presented with a c:\fakepath message and the resume does not upload. How can I rectify this?

Add this one to the list of thinks that don't work on the Apple Job Board. It looks like Apple is using ADP's VE (Virtual Edge) technology to run this system, and I've been stupified by the number of features that are just broken, or so poorly thought out by ADP as to be unusable, (certainly for webkit and mozilla browsers at least: I didn't bother checking IE.)
    Here are a few highlights:
"My Job List", list of jobs applied for, seems to max out at three. You can apply for more than that, but you can only see the first three.
"Search Using Your Resume" feature yields few or no results, even when the pasted text contains only common, exactly matched words like 'Design' or 'Engineer'.
The missing resume upload, described in this thread.
"My Job Agent" seems to never flag anything, at least it hasn't ever for me despite pretty loose criteria.
Agent's created using "My Job Agent" eventually just disappear, which is fine because they don't seem to work.
When updating a profile, acknowledging the 'Terms' happens twice in a row.
Job seekers can only supply one cover letter despite being able apply for several jobs.
Pagination for search results only appears at the top of the page, so it's necessary to scroll down through each page, then up to the top again to proceed to the next page.
Well, I'm sure there are others, but you get the idea. I hope the Apple folks can fix this, (or twist ADP's arm to fix it,) so it better represents the quality of experience that Apple is so respected for consistently delivering.

The iWork Public Beta allowed me to share Keynote presentations with anyone via the web. Now Apple tells me the Public Beta is being replaced by iCloud. How can I share a Keynote presentation online via iCloud? Must the presentation be downloaded to view?

iCloud is not designed for sharing data with other people: you will need a third-party alternative such as DropBox or Sugarsync.

  • Possible to view presentations with embedded clips  on the ipad from an external wifi  drive?

    Hello,
first of all I am happy to have joined this community, my name is Chris from Germany.
I am wondering if this setting is possible:
I have bought an external wifi drive (Seagate Satellite Goflex) as well as the iPad4.
I am giving lectures (powerpoint and keynote presentations containing lots of embedded video clips).
Now I would like to show these presentations with my iPad connected to the Wifi drive.
You have to download a special Seagate App on the iPad to be able to see the data on the external wifi drive - I have managed to open the powerpoint files in the App (unfortunately keynote files are not supported by the Seagate App) but when I open them with keynote or goodreader the embedded media will always be removed.
Is this the end of the story or are there any solutions (i.e. with other hardware devices or software)?
Have a nice New Years Eve and thanks in advance,
    Chris

    yes and no ...
    I have figured that out:
First of all: you can`t just view presentations on an external device without importing them into your iPad (at least when you plan to show slides with embedded clips) - goodreader, filebrowser, dropbox ... just show you "static" slides.
When you import a ppt-presentation into keynote all the hyperlinks, embedded clips ... are gone - no chance.
But ... in keynote you are able to "embed" video clips when you drag and drop them directly into the slide alowing "copy video into the document" as well (that is "vital") - the files are getting larger but you don`t have to add a clip when you transfer it to another device (i.e. the iPad) - they are "fixed" in the document..
Now seagate goflex has the problem that you just can`t open/view keynote presentations - but there is a solution:
hacksatellite firmware. When you install that you can go into keynote, activate WebDav, import a keynote file from the external drive, edit it and send it back to the external drive - so: import (can`t live without that), show or edit the presentation, copy it again to the external device and delete the presentation in the iPad (to save storage) is the way you can get the optimum from the iPad at the moment.
Correct me if there is any other more comfortable solution.
    Thanks for your reply Daniel,
    Christian

iOS 5.1.1 Software Update - just tried to update and it didn't work! Got to the final stages and was presented with error 1602! My screen now has the frozen image of the itunes logo and usb thing. Happened once before - funnily enough when doing an update back in November - I had to visit an Apple store to have the phone restored. Would appreciate any advice as I would like to avoid another trip to the apple store.

    found the real problem.
In my laptop where it couldn't detect the iphone and ipad, this folder is missing:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
The ipad was wrongly using a microsoft driver.
I found the correct drivers in:
    C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\usbaapl64.inf_amd64_neutral_c111a aecb61e9a2b
    Copy the contents to
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
After that, I had to update the driver for Ipad in device manager.
Ipad was found under: "Removable Devices", as a storage device.
Once that is fixed, itunes can detect ipad, and I can restore it.
Apple should really look into ensuring that folder doesn't go missing during itunes update process.

  • Why Toshiba notebooks are not delivered with the common Vista install CD

Our household now has two x Toshiba laptops, both of which were supplied with MS Vista Home Premium pre-installed.
The nature of the Recovery Media provided with these machines is such that (a) we do not have sufficient flexibility over volume/partition sizes, program locations etc., and, more specifically.
It makes it necessary for the majority of the bundled software (Norton Security etc.,) to be installed by default in the event of a system failure. (And immediately uninstalled following recovery! An unnecessary waste of time.)
Bearing in mind that a proportion of the price paid for each laptop must have included a cost for the Vista Operating System, does anyone know if it is possible to obtain a Master Recovery disk which ONLY consists of the operating system, and which allows us the flexibility of configuration which used to be available when the OS was purchased as a separate product.
Additionally, please let me know if it is possible to purchase Toshiba laptops as a RAW machine, i.e no OS supplied, and I will then buy my own and cut out the rubbish which is supplied on the pre-installed media.

    >Why Toshiba notebooks are not delivered with the common Vista install CD?
The answer is very simple: software is bundled to hardware and when you buy notebook you buy license for preinstalled Vista version and you can install recovery media so often you want and it belongs JUST to your notebook model. It cannot be used with other notebook or PCs.
If you get usual Vista installations DVD it can be installed on each computer system. For such purposes you must buy Microsoft installations DVD.
As you already wrote Toshiba recovery image contains much software that can be not useful for you. You can remove it from the system and nobody force you to use them. I do the same.
After clean OS installation the first thing I do is to remove or software I don't need or I don't like.
I optimise preinstalled OS on my own.

I am talking about iPhoto. In my old Mac even in Books choosing slideshow gives a pop up where you can select a music from I tunes library. In this new one I can stop the slideshow with cursor and it shows music option but it is, as I said dead. Does not response at all to commands.

  • No connectivity with wireless notebook but has connectivity with wired desktops in the network

Hello! My name is Annie.  I have a BEFW11s4 LinkSys Wireless Access Point / Cable Router with 4-Port Switch version2.1. My three desktops are hard wired into the router and have no problem with connectivity to each of three computers in my home network and to the internet.
My problem is that my wireless notebook does not see the router. There is no connectivity or does not see wireless network in range.  The notebook is about two feet away in distance from router and wireless switch of my notebook is on. The WLAN Link is Green and the Link LED illuminates, which means that the wireless option is enabled.
Please help! I travel with notebook often for work and need to connect to the home network and internet once I am home.   The notebook has no problem with a different wireless router when at work( 2WIRE).  It's when I get home that I encounter the problem when I am using the wireless linksys described above.  I also change the preference in my notebook to make sure the home linksys router is the first in the list of wireless router.  I only have two in thelist (2WIRE and linksys)
    Thanks,
    Annie

annie no need to do the reset since 3desktops are working already...you can see linksys maybe thats your own network since you never mention about any wireless settings with your wireless access point, right?
so to make sure that you have the right settings check your access point screen or the configuration page to check or to futher configure the wireless the settings...try to name your own network so would identify our own network...
