The famous extremely robust alu unicase.

I purchased a new macbook pro since I needed to carry my computer everywhere an had to replace my powerbook G5 17'.
Some health problems forced me to work in my bed since I cannot walk for a few months.
I really felt safe since the unibody alu case is said to be extremely robust.
Unfortunately, it happenned wht had to happen. The computer slided along the bed cover and fell 20 centimeters between two blankets. Very smooth and slow hit !
But now, I see thet the very robust case has bumps, disformation as if it was made of thin cardboard. It happened on the lower case and on the screen cover.
I just think that this should not happen on a mobile device. The cheapest plastic PCs would not have so much suffered !!!!
Now, my "precious" has a visible scar of what I consider as an unacceptable weakness.

I had a 2.16Ghz silver keyboard MBP that I dropped 4 feet to a carpeted concrete floor once. It did not cause one bit of damage. The newer aluminum models seem to be a lot more fragile though. Here is an example.
I bought a Speck SeeThru case for both my laptops. They snap on, fit like a glove and add rigidity to the cases.

  • How do i use the airport extreme to extend my wireless network

How do i connected my airport extreme up to my existing network so that it can extend my wireless through out the house ??
Can it be done wirelessly or do i need an ethernet cable thats about 10m ?
    Keith

The AirPort Exteme can "extend" your existing wireless network (using wireless only) if it is being provided by another Apple router.
If your current main router is not an Apple product, then you will need to plan to connect the AirPort Extreme to your router using an Ethernet cable.
Post back for more information if needed.

  • Speed on the Airport Extreme

Hi I have a Macbook running Leopard. Everything runs well. Ever since I bought the Airport extreme WIFI N router my connection speed to the connected external hard drive is rather slow.....
    Here is what i do....
I have a 250gig Mybook connected to the Airport extreme. On the airport utility settings, if I set it to only N wifi the speed is very slow. So i have to keep it on the multiple settings (b/g/n). According to my Macbook, when I have the multiple settings the speed is 130 mbs but if it's on only n then it's 300mbs.
So my question is, why is the connection faster when it's on multiple settings then when it's on just N?
is there a fix for this?

I'm confused by your question. Your first statement says that it is faster (300 Mbps) in 802.11n only. Your question seems to indicate the opposite.

  • Can the AirPort Extreme work as an extender?

Simple question: Can the AirPort Extreme work as a wireless network extender? (I have tried to research this online, of course, but I haven't had much luck.)
Background: The only option from our ISP is a router/modem combination. It used to be plugged directly into my dad's (Dell and Windows) desktop computer, but I was having trouble connecting all my devices wirelessly. So, I moved it into the kitchen and plugged it into the phone line (we have AT&T DSL) and got a USB wireless adapter for my dad's computer (because he didn't think he needed the wireless option on his "fancy" new Dell). I also have a different brand of adapter plugged into my old iMac G3, which I LOVE using.
Since doing this, my dad has constantly complained of his Internet not working correctly, things loading slowly, and having trouble connecting at all. (Full disclosure: he STILL uses the complete desktop version of AOL and refuses to give it up.) However, I've had no trouble on ANY of my devices--the G3, my white MacBook, my iPad, my iPod, or my mom's Kindle Fire. This leads me to believe the problem lies in the fact that he's using AOL because I usually don't have trouble when I briefly use Chrome on his desktop.
I've tried finding different solutions, including flashing an old router to use an extender and researching different extenders and bridges and such, but nothing looks like a viable solution because of all our components.
I'm wondering if the AirPort Extreme (probably the A1143;or any of the other AirPort devices) can work as an extender. To appease my dad, it'd be best to take the modem/router back to his man cave so he can hook it back up to his computer, but I'm not sure if the AirPort can pick up the wireless signal and perhaps be plugged directly into my G3 and otherwise act as an extender for my other devices (while searching for an Internet solution for my G3, I read on here that someone did this, but there was no further information on how it worked) or if I can plug it into the kitchen phone line and keep the USB adapter for the G3 and have wireless access to all my other things.
    Help?
(I can't find the original support article where a responder mentioned using the AirPort station with an iMac G3, but i did locate this one: https://discussions.apple.com/message/13080786#13080786)
(My iMac is one of the later ones. It's running 10.4.1 and is a 600MHz model.)

Simple question: Can the AirPort Extreme work as a wireless network extender?
Simple answer: Yes....IF....the AirPort Extreme is extending a wireless network that is being provided by another Apple 802.11n wireless router.
Another way of saying the same thing is that it will take a minimum of two Apple 802.11n wireless routers to extend a signal wirelessly.
The more complex answer involves distances and obstructions involved in the setup, or alternate solutions such as running Ethernet cabling or using Ethernet powerline adapters.

  • How to Connect a Thinkpad to the AirPort Extreme?

I have an AirPort Extreme router which I have been happily using for wireless internet access on my Macbookpro. Now my wife, with an IBM Thinkpad, with WindowsXP, wishes to use the same wireless access. The AirPort Extreme Setup Guide says that she should go to Start>Programs>AirPort. But she does not find AirPort there. What should I and she do (in babytalk please)? We tried, using our flash drives to transfer a copy of AirPort from my Mac to her PC, but that does not seem to work. Help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

frankxc, Welcome to the discussion area!
I'm sure that Apple's setup guide is expecting that you have installed the software from the disc which shipped the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) onto the Windows laptop.
Unfortunately in my experience the directions for enabling wireless on a Windows laptop varies immensely on what wireless hardware capabilities that laptop has installed and what version of Windows is installed.
I have a IBM Thinkpad and I can tell you that the directions vary immensely from the previous 2 Thinkpads I used.
I would suggest that you visit the IBM web site and try to find directions there.

  • Airport Utility for my Airport Extreme needs to be changed to a different computer, because the current computer is down permanently.. How do I do this?  Do I have to reset the Airport Extreme and start from scratch?

The computer (Win XP) on which the Airport Utility has been set up for the past few years is no longer accessible, so I need to set it up on a different computer. Can I do that with my exisitng wireless network, or will I have to set up a new network from scratch, once I have installed Airport Utility on the new machine?

You can install AirPort Utility on either a Mac or PC, but there would be no reason to make any changes to your existing configuration on the AirPort Extreme unless you need to do so.

  • How do I set up a Netgear WNR3500 as wireless extender with the Airport Extreme as my main router?

I just got the Airport Extreme yesterday because the Netgear couldn't hold all the computers we had on it. Now the Apple router works great, except for it is downstairs in the basement because our home computer is ancient and only connects via ethernet cord. So the Wi-Fi upstairs is only one bar on my smart phone way in the corner far from the router. I did some research and found out that the Netgear WNR3500 can be used as a wireless extender. I want to hook it up on the main floor away from the Airport where the signal is strong so it will still get great connection but will be able to transmit that same great connection a little bit farther. I just want to know how to do that.
         Thank You!

The Netgear WNR3500 has mixed reviews at best and their customer support is unformly regarded as poor.
Interesting how different people have different experiences - although I never needed their tech support, so I would not have an opinion on that, this wireless router was the absolute best router I've ever had. I had to stop using it because I changed ISP's and was forced to use their modem/router combination (nothing else will work with their new V-DSL service); however, I've kept the router in case I should need to use it as an extender (which I haven't). In any case, unlike D-Link, Belkin, or Link-Sys which would at most give me one bar in my livingroom and the signal would cut out intermittently (livingroom is 50 ft from study), the Netgear showed all the bars and was steady as a rock. Configuring it with MAC filtering on their website was much easier than my current one as well.

  • What is the best way to setup the Airport Extreme?

I have a wireless network setup in my home using the Airport Extreme. My kids run on PCs and I use a Mac. For the past few years, we have used the wireless network without much difficulty, but we have had some problems with it for the past few weeks. We can all receive excellent signal strength anywhere in the house, but the connection speed is extremely slow are not working at all.
My setup is as such: cable modem to a Linksys router (so I can hook my printer up and print wirelessly) and the router to the airport's WAN. Also, I have 3 signal repeaters to help boost the signal throughout the house. My kids and I can connect to the internet using ethernet cords, but cannot get online wirelessly even though the signal strength is excellent.
Does anyone have the same setup and/or problem with their network? If anyone can provide some tips or solutions I'd appreciate it because I'm all out of ideas. Thanks
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Hello aezimmer. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference in the immediate area that is preventing you from getting a good clean signal...even if it's a strong one.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like KisMAC, MacStumbler, iStumbler, or IPNetMonitorX to determine potential areas of interference...and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them.

  • Can I connect a 4 TB USB drive to the airport extreme and use it as a network drive for Time Machine

Can I connect a 4 TB USB drive to the airport extreme and use it as a network drive for Time Machine

Yes, if the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
The USB port on the Time Capsule is under powered, so you may need use a powered USB hub with the 4 TB drive...even if it has its own power supply.

  • How can I open the ports with the Airport Extreme?

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station connected to a cable modem and I want to open the ports for the two Playstation 3's I connected to the Airport Extreme via Cat 6 ethernet cable. The first Playstation 3 will be used to play Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and the other Playstation 3 will be used to watch streaming movie from Netflix. Does anyone know if this can be done?

It is documented on Page 54 of Apple's "Designing
AirPort Networks Using AirPort Utility Mac OS X v10.5 + Windows" (direct PDF download link).
The public port and private port would be set the same value.

  • My Time Capsule disk shows on my iMac but not my MacBook Pro. How do I get the Airport Extreme mounted disk to show as an available Time Machine disk on my MacBook?

I just replaced an Airport Express with a new Airport Extreme. My iMac recognizes the external hard disk I have connected to the Airport Extreme, and my Time Machine is backing up to it. But I can't get my MacBook Pro to recognize the disk as available for Time Machine. Both are running Mavericks, and the MacBook is only a couple of months old.

  • Can the AirPort Extreme support more than one printer at a time?

can the AirPort Extreme support more than one USB printer at a time if it is connected to a USB Hub?

can the AirPort Extreme support more than one USB printer at a time if it is connected to a USB Hub?
Yes.....IF.....you use a powered USB hub.
I have had 3 printers connected at the same time in the past and assume that more would work as long you have a powered hub to support the number of ports that you need.

  • Is there a way to automatically backup the Airport Extreme Configuration file (.baseconfig)?

Is there a way to automatically backup the Airport Extreme Configuration file (.baseconfig).
I know (in hindsight) that I can manually export it from the Airport Utility, but ideally I would like to include it in my Time Machine backup. I had a situation where my Airport Extreme (3rd generation) just stopped working (no lights, no power). I had not exported the config file. I bought a new Airport Extreme (5th generation) and had to manually configure the new router.
    Thanks

One option would be to use Automator and record the actions to run the AirPort Utility; save the configuration file to the desktop (or any other location you want), and then, close the utility. You can then either make this a part of your login startup programs. Time Machine then should be able to make backups.

  • Ordered the Airport Extreme Base Station - some questions if you can help?

I have a Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit IBM ThinkPad T500 laptop I need to connect, and a Windows Vista PC. The ThinkPad has a built-in wirless N card and the Vista has a Belkin N+ USB wireless adapter. Can these both find and connect to the Airport without me installing any software (Bonjour etc) on them?
Since they are using the N+ wireless cards, will they connect to the Airport at 2GHZ or 5GHZ speed? If they can connect at either speed, what controls that?
I also have a MACPro desktop. I was hoping to configure my airport using it and hoped not to have to worry about configuring the other 2 pcs.
My old router was a Belkin n+ 2GHz router. Could I use that router as a repeater with the Airport. How can I do that?
Thanks for any help on these questions.

    Welcome to the discussions, Michael!
I can't help on your Windows / PC related questions, but can offer some input on the last two questions.
+"I also have a MACPro desktop. I was hoping to configure my airport using it and hoped not to have to worry about configuring the other 2 pcs."+
You will use AirPort Utility to configure the AirPort Extreme. It should already be on your Mac. Check Hard Drive > Applications > Utilties > AirPort Utility. This will also come on the installation CD.
+"My old router was a Belkin n+ 2GHz router. Could I use that router as a repeater with the Airport. How can I do that?"+
In order to "extend" a wireless network created by the AirPort Extreme(n), you would need another AirPort Extreme, an AirPort Express, or a Time Capsule. The Belkin would not be compatible with an Apple base station for this purpose.
If you connected an ethernet cable from the AirPort Extreme or used a pair of ethernet powerline adapters, then you could possibly configure the Belkin to create a wireless network, but unless it was 5 GHz capable, you would not be able to mimic the 5 GHz "main" network that the Extreme would be creating.
