The fan on my MacBook is running a lot

The fan on my MacBook is running a lot. What could this mean. The unit is on a flat cool surface.

running demanding applications, or watching movies etc will cause that and it is normal to stop your mac from overheating.

  • Why are the fans on my macbook constantly running loudly

The fans on my macbook are running loudly and my computer is running very slowly.
Does anyone know a solution to this?

Either the cpu is cycling doing some intensive work (see Activity Monitor) or the SMC needs resetting.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
You can also install an app to monitor temperature and speed eg SMC Fan Control.

  • Why would the fan on my macbook be constantly runs, even when no applications are running.  Why?

Why would the fan on my MacBook constantly run?  Even when I have no applications running?  Is there a way to determine what is causing this to happen?

JAWade, try resetting the SMC and pram. Not always, but often those resets help problems like yours. Follow these instructions exactly.
    To reset the SMC
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Why do the fans on my macbook pro suddenly rev up

The fans on my macbook pro (about 3 - 4) yrs old suddenly rev up and the computer gets very hot. This is sometimes (but not necessarily) at times of optimum use.
The case seems to be vented ok. I am running Mavericks osx and use computer for range of uses - graphics, e-mails, word and spreadsheets.
    Is this a problem?
it sure make the computer noisy.

    Hello kiwiwoodz,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like the fan is running at high speed while properly ventilated. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you isolate or resolve the issue.

  • The fan on my macbook will not turn off

Please help.  the fan on my macbook will not turn off.  Also, my battery is no longer showing a percentage.
    Thanks

Hmmm.  You have done the basics.  If you open the ActivityMonitor app in the Utliities folder,  select CPU usuage in the column-  flip it so highest % is on top.  Is ther an app in that column that is spiked?  Quit that app.
You can run the Apple Hardware Test by booting holding the D key on restart,  this may generate an error code. Not the most complete test but it is a start.
If no AHT- Boot off your Install Disk while holding down the d key, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT. Some models have a separate AHT CD.

  • 10.7 Lion makes the fan in my MacBook Pro roar!

The fan in my MacBook Pro 13" Thunderbolt (2,3 GHz i5, 8 GB RAM) is driving me wild! As wild as a Lion! I was used to it howling like a starting spaceship whenever I was watching crappy Flash Video, but now with 10.7 Lion, the fan even blows like crazy in Mail.app.
What’s most annoying is that it doesn't spin at a constant speed but that it's speed, and thus volume goes up and down all the time. The guys at Apple can't be serious about this... The fan action in my previous MacBook Pro 13" (2.26 GHz C2D, 8 GB) was really moderate, but the SandyBridge-based machines seem to be a nightmare.
I rather accept a slower CPU, than the penetrating and annoying howling. Come on Apple give us some Firmware update! Where is the 'eye of Steve' when you need it?
    P.S.: Please second this!
P.P.S.: I'm familiar with the Activity Monitor, and closely watch the processes, so it is not that I don't understand what is going on. Yet, still: My last C2D MBP was a zillion times quiter...

Mine is roaring too - like a computer readying for lift-off. I think it wants to be the next space shuttle.
In my case, it's definitely (at least in part) because clamshell mode currently has a major bug under Lion. You should be able to run an external monitor with the MBP lid open and internal screen off. After upgrading to Lion, the MBP screen comes back on as soon as you re-open the lid. So the only way to use only the external display is to keep the lid closed. Lid closed = poorer air circulation = hotter running = mad, mad fan noise plus a much unhappier and unhealthy living environment for the battery and other components.
One step forward, three steps back... Please fix, Apple.

  • The fan in my Macbook Pro heats up

The fan in my Macbook Pro heats up quite fast.
I wanted to know how much it would cost to get it fixed as I don't have Apple care and my warranty has expired?

Buy an external microphone or a headset. Which type depends on what type Mac you have. The 13" model has a single combo jack, the 15" and 17" models have separate input and output jacks.

The fan of my 2013 iMac running 10.9.5 keeps running on full speed even if there is no programs running.
I've tried the SMC reset, but around 5 minutes after restarting the computer the fan picked up speed again.
When trying to shut down the mac normally and turning it back on - the fan starts directly.
Thanks already for any tipps or tricks to resolve this problem!

  • I have never heard the fan in my 24" iMac run until.....

I have never heard the fan in my 24" iMac run until the other day after the power was acidentlly unpulled from the UPS.  During the power-up the fan came on and ran at what must have been full speed ahead, a minimum amount of small was blown out.  The high speed continued for a long time, I had no idea as to what was happening.
I preformed a restart and when the  power up was complete all was fine, and I have never heard the fan run again.  This unit gets warm but has no fan has ever run to the best of knowledge.  Now it seems like it should run sometime during hi CPU usage??
    Any thoughts.
    Thanks  in advance

The fans are software-controlled, so it's likely that the unexpected loss of power scrambled things temporarily. It probably caused the controller to forget its previous fan settings. When this happens, the fans go to max to protect the computer until the controller can regain new settings appropriate to the task.
The fans run all the time. Their default speed is low enough that you must have the computer in a very quiet room to notice them at default speed. When sensors detect that the internal temps have exceeded a theshold level, the controller send a command to have the fans speed up.
On my mid 2010 iMac quad-core i7, web browsing, word processing, running through e-mail--typical office tasks--have never made the fan speed up. Gaming can. So can videos. I was wathing a commercial DVD movie last night and noticed the CPU's fan speed has moved from its default of about 1000 rpm to about 1300 while the moving was running.
I believe what you saw was normal, and a chance to see how smart the system really is to realized it had lost stored fan speed info and moved the fans to a safety setting while software sorted out the effect of the loss of power.

  • The fan sound of macbook air

Is it normal to hear the fan sound of macbook air. not all the time

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Sometimes, when you are doing heavy tasks with your computer, temperature increases. Your Mac turns on fans automatically when temperature increases a lot, so it will keep your computer safe. It's normal and you shouldn't be worried if this doesn't happen all the time

  • Should the fan in my MacBook Air be running when the computer is shut and asleep?

Mine is, and this seems like a waste of battery life. I feel like the fan used to shut off when the computer was shut. But now, even when I close the MacBook, the fan still runs as fast as it did when the computer was open. Anyone know what the heck is going on here?

Yeah I think it is a Mavericks thing. Mine actually wasn't too bad. I closed the lid at night when my power was at about 52% and the fan kept going. I just went to bed, and in the morning, the fan had stopped, and my power was still around 51%, so it didn't eat any of my power like I thought it was going to. Mavericks must have the ability to cool your computer when needed even after you close it. It actually turned out to be not that big a deal.

  • The fan on my macbook Pro is running constantly.

Seems to of started after I upgraded to Maverick maybe? Yesterday I did get a "memory is full" pop-up, or something of that nature. I then deleted 118 Gigs from my hard drive (and emptied the trash) but my computer still seems to be freezing up a bit and the fan is constantly running. I did an Etresoft check which is below:
