I just had the same problem this morning. I tried to import a 500MB mp4 into iMovie HD, and I have 9.5GB on my hard drive, but the same error message came up.
If the 500MB mp4 file was highly compressed and iMovie converted it to DV, it's quite possible iMovie would run out of disk space.
Although 9.5GB sounds like a lot, it's tiny when editing video. (Each hour of video is ~13GB.) When iMovie complains that it can't find the disk space it needs, it's not a good thing. Everything is put in jeopardy. Don't forget that thee Mac OS X itself needs a certain amount of elbow room. When it can't get it, big problems can occur.
The main drive of your Mac should have at least 10-15% free disk space at all times, even AFTER iMovie/iDVD is done handling the video.

  • There is not enough disk space left to import

I am in the middle of editing a movie. I have imported two clips and am trying to import a third.
I have precisely 62.42Gigabytes of hard disk space (I have a 120 Gig HD). The clip I want to import is 1.69 Gigabytes.
    I get the following message:
    Error during Import
The file could not be imported: There is not enough disk space left to import...
I tried moving the project to another account on the same computer but that did not work either.
I have searched through these forums and many others seem to have the same problem but I have yet to find ANY workable solution!
    HELP please!

The clip I want to import is 1.69 Gigabytes.
By any chance, is the "clip" a compressed QuickTime movie? If so, when iMovie converts it to DV a 1.69GB movie may expand quite a lot. Please describe the clip.
And describe the disk the project resides on. Is it an internal disk or external disk?
Here's some things to check out...

  • Upgrade the OS from Maver to Yosemite.. message "There is no enough disk space available to install this product". Please help.

I have 5.12gb space on my Macbook Air (Mid 2012). But when i attempt to upgrade the OS from Maver to Yosemite, i get a message "There is no enough disk space available to install this product". Please help

You need to temporarily free up additional drive space - the Yosemite download itself is just over 5GB and then it needs more space to install it. Once the new OS is installed the installer will be deleted. Music and movie files are large and will be the most convenient files to remove to an external drive.
On another note it isn't a good idea to try to run the computer with so little free drive space. Look for files you can offload to an external drive permanently. For example, I keep my music and movies on an external drive. You can keep a small assortment of music on the computer but save lots of space by keeping the regular media library off the computer.

  • Not Enough Disk Space Left

I'm trying to make a highlight film to send to colleges for football and im using imovie hd. I've imported 2 game films onto a project from a usb jump drive and made 15-20 7 second clips from them. Then I've deleted the big game film files from the project. I'm trying to import another game film, but everytime I do it says "Error during import. The file could not be imported: There is not enough disk space left to import gamefilm.mp4"
I thought maybe it was because I didn't have enough space on my hard drive. But it says there's 1 GB left on my drive. Each film is about 225 MB. Plus I loaded the film from the jumpdrive to the harddrive with no problems. Then I thought it might be there's not enough room on the project. So I opened a new one, but its the same problem. How do I import the new film...?

    Welcome to the forums.
It sounds like you're encountering a problem when iMovie converts the file from the USB drive Presumably the game film is very compressed on the jump drive, but iMovie converts video into a format it can use (at about 13 gigs per hour). A gig on your hard drive means that you deperately need more hard drive space.
Once you free up more space for import, you've solved only part of the problem because burning your project to DVD will take gigs more space. Over in the iDVD forum, you'll see recommendations for 10-20 gigs of free space for burning a DVD.
Besides this project, your computer needs space to function effectively. Some folks say we need 10% free, but that's a lot of space on a big drive. I start to worry if I have less than 10 free gigs for everyday use; more if I'm doing a video project.

  • Not enough disk space left error

I am trying to put a video that is in .mov format into imovie HD and then export that into a DVD file so I can burn it and play it on a DVD player. But right away when I try importing it to edit it it says not enough disk space. I have 18 gigs on the hard drive that I am using right now. Is there any way around this or would the file just become that big or what? Thank you beforehand for any information you can provide.

No that doesen't pretain to my problem I am not having a problem burning the disk or with Idvd at all (yet anyways) just importing it to Imovie without a pointless error that makes no sense. Of corse it does talk about skipping imovie completely by using Idvd which is what I am trying to do now but it takes a very very long time for quicktime to convert files of that size. But I will see if it works and post back again.

  • There is no enough disk space

I am faced another problem when I was creating VM. Around 80%, it paused and the error was "there is not enough space".
I have at least 127 GB available in my hard drive disk. Also, when I tried to create VHD, it allowed me only dynamic, not fixed.
it says you don't have enough disk space when I try to create fixed vhd. What is going on?

I think there is more going on in the system (as a whole) than you are aware of.
Page files, RAM save state files, media save locations, it all adds up.
This is one of those things that it is extremely difficult to help with through the passage of time and the use of a keyboard and text.  Experience and eyeballs could probably give a reason in minutes.  But we don't have the luxury here.
A VHD must grow if it is dynamic.  If you create checkpoints, those increase your used disk space. there are many, many possibilities.
You have to investigate and pay careful attention to the various places you are looking.
From your other thread I would already venture that you have multiple physical drive partitions, multiple VHDs, failed attempts at various things, etc.

  • "Not enough disk space" when there seems to be

I'm a newbie to iDVD and iMovie (my last Mac was a Performa 6360--still using it for the family budget) and got my daughter a MacBook as a graduation gift. She is using it to combine movie inputs from a wedding/reception that come from digital camreas and a couple of video cameras. We went to Flip4Mac to get the necessary features to import .wmv files (only way we could download one of the vidoe cameras).
Issue: When she tries to import vidoes already on her computer, she gets: "The file could not be imported: There is not enough disk space to import Macintosh HD/Users/julie/pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2007/Roll8/CIMG1442.AVI"
Basically the question is how to get more room on her disk to import and to save? She seems to only be able to Save--she can't Save Project as an option because it says she doesn't have enough disk space (she's deleted the trash). Help says you need to have more than 400mb of free space or it gets difficult but the indicator shows 28.8GB free space left...so there seems to be some kind of disconnect?? (Or maybe we're talking apples and oranges?)
On top of that, she also gets the same error message when she tries to burn the project onto a disk???
I went through the first 5 pages of the forum and couldn't see a similar problem, but then I may have not known what to look for?
Any help would be greatly appreciated...she's trying to give the DVD as a Wedding gift--somewhat belated.

  • "Not enough disk space" when there seems to be (+ rapid memory consumption)

[Note: I originally posted this in the iDVD section, but due to an answer I got there to another question and further conversations with my daughter, figured out this is probably an iMovie question?]

She is using it to combine movie inputs from a wedding/reception that come from digital camreas and a couple of video cameras. We went to Flip4Mac to get the necessary software/features to import .wmv files (only way we could download one of the video cameras was by going from PC to Mac--can't remember if it was a Sony or Canon).
Issue: When she tries to import vidoes into iMovie HD 6.0.3 which have already been transferred to her computer, she gets: "The file could not be imported: There is not enough disk space to import Macintosh HD/Users/julie/pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2007/Roll8/CIMG1442.AVI" [She says this is about a 4 min. clip.]
Basically the question is how to get more room on her disk to import and to save? She seems to only be able to Save--she can't Save Project as an option because it says she doesn't have enough disk space (she's already deleted the Trash). [Even more disturbing, just in the last couple of days with only a little time spent on the computer, the 28.8 GB has dropped to 2.3GB--obviously there is something she is doing that she is not aware of or shouldn't be doing that is consuming memory at a rapid pace.] On top of that, she also gets the same error message when she tries to burn the project onto a disk using iDVD???

    Hello Karstn Schluter,
This is fm's daughter who is havin ghte difficulites. at the end you tell me to try to answer 1-8 so i will try.
1- how can you tell if the avi is containing divx? or not?? do I need to just keep this in mind when importing these files
2- I have not brought in an external drive. I did try making my laptop computer a harddrive so I could import my imovie poject to my eMAC at one point, but it was not allowing me to do that either. Because I had to have it in DVD form or something
3- No I did not segment the internal drive....sorry How do you do that??? Right now I am trying to find out what is taking up all the memory and Hard Disk Drive space....i do not know how to do that either....Do you know how???
4-Yes I know flip4mac is for wmv....I guess what that question was emplying was that I also have wmv files that I am trying to import to imovieHD and that is not working either...I can get my avi to get into imovieHD, but not my wmv. files
5-THank you for the tip with the trash then another question to this one how do you delet projects that are taking up memory that are no longer in use?
6-Thank you for the tip...so then ignore the not enough disk space.....how can you alter the disk space so that you can save the project under save project as and not just save project?
7- Sorry my dad was miss informed I cannot import the wmv. files to imovie and I cannot import imovie to iDVD I only have transferred one and then all of the other files are not seen as movies so I can not import them?? Does that make since
8- When we were useing the Sony Camera originally we could not import the video to the MAC because it did not have the correct firewire cable and it would not been read onto the MAC computer. So, we have to buy the flip4mac equipment so that I would be able ot download the inoformation to the computer by a wmv.file dvd so we are having difficulites trying to import that file.
I hope these answers clear up the question a little bit more and sorry that your answers brought out more questions. Thank you very much for helping me. I was using a different program in my college class so changing to imovie and idvd has been a huge struggle for me. Thank you once again.

  • Not Enough Disk Space for Rendering

I am trying to edit a QuickTime file that I exported out of iPhoto, which contains about one hour of a slide show. The QuickTime file is only 741 MB. All I wanted to do is add music and titles using FCP. So I created a new project, imported the QuickTime file into FCP and inserted the entire one hour clip to sequence. When I rendered the sequence, FCP not only indicated it would take 4 hours to render but also said there is no enough disk space available to complete the rendering. I have about 60GB space left in my hard drive. How could the 741MB file take up more than 60GB of disk space for rendering? I haven't even put any video effects or music on the sequence yet. Can anyone tell me what's going on? Can I simply edit the 741MB file without changing the file size?

Why not add the music and titles in iPhoto? The music is easy(just set up an iTunes playlist) If you need title slides just create them in an image editor(you could even use Textedit), save as a jpeg, import to iPhoto and incorporate them into the show.
Thanks for your suggestion, but I'm not interested in using iPhoto to add the music and titles when I can use FCP to easily create better effects.
If you then export the slideshow as a Quicktime movie then you can just pull it into iDVD. But if DVD is the intended end format your QT export needs to be 1024 or 720 x 576(thats for PAL TV) depending on the aspect ratio you're going for. I'd export it as DV.
I've used the iDVD slideshow function before. I was frustrated by the limitation the function offers. I just wanted to simply edit the QuickTime movie I exported from iPhoto using FCP. I don't know why it's so hard and no one can seems to assist me. Any suggestion would be appreciated, though. Thanks.

  • Importing a movie - lack of disk space?

I'm tryin to import an mp4 file of just under 908mb into iMovie, so i can compress it down. However, when i try and do this it comes up with an error message saying "The file could not be imported: There is not enough disk space left to import Macintosh HD/Users/Drewy/Movies/The Big Lebowski". This is probably very very simple. I have 20gb of hard drive left if that makes any difference. I'm just wondering what might be stopping it from importing and how i could solve this?

iMovie needs to convert your footage to .dv and needs about 18mb/hr.

  • Not enough disk space for event folder

    Hello
So, i've been facing this problem for quite a while now (3 hours of constant raging ;D)
Something went wrong with FCP X and I lost my entire project (which is not the point)
I cleared everything from FCP X to start over again (all the event files, projects,...). Now that I am trying to get every file back in my event folder (via import files, it's about 41gigs of files) it says that I haven't got enough disk space. But I do, I have 830gigs of free space on my internal HD.
I have no idea what the problem is or how to solve it.
    Your ideas are very welcome
    Thanks beforehand, a young editor.

First tried it without removing them from the trash (if that is what you mean). then emptied the trash and tried it again.
and yes I have there is currently 862,13 GB available

  • Firefox thinks I don't have enough disk space, and cancels the download when it's almost finished.

So recently, I was downloading a pretty huge file for a game (4.5 gigabytes), and it was nearly finished, when an error popped up, saying that there wasn't enough disk space for Firefox to download the file. At the time, I had just enough disk space to download the file (yes, I checked and made sure). The download became unresumable, and I was incredibly irked to find I had to download again, as my download speed is not very good at all. I put it in overnight and made a note of where it stopped, and in the morning, when I checked it, it stopped in the EXACT SAME place, which is at about 4.1/4.5 GBs. I've made a lot more room since then, and I'm downloading it for the third time now. If this happens again, how can I solve this? Thanks.
Also, it's a .dat file. I have no idea if that has any bearing on what may cause this, but if anyone knows anything, please let me know.

The file system is a FAT32 Bootcamp Partition, and what baffles me is that I've been able to download and store files that are over 4 GBs before. And while I'm at it, why is it that you say FAT32 file-systems can't store files over 4 GBs? I've never heard of that happening before.
    Many thanks.

  • I am trying to download my photos into I photo with my new Nikon S6300 camera and keep getting the message  The file could not be imported the file is unrecognizable format had no problems with my Canon camera

Trying to download my pictures to IPhoto with my new Nikon S6300 camera keep getting the message the file could not be imported as the file is unreconizable format. I had no problem with my old Canon camera. Please help

I am having the same problem which has happened very infrequently before. Generally it's one photo and happened when my battery died.
However today I tried to download six photos.
None would download including several others for a total of 21 that would not download.
Since I had just installed a new powered hub and added three new external 4T hard drives, I got concerned that it was the hub. Then got really worried that I'd have problems with the data I have been backing up.
However following this sequence of events, I've determined it's not the hub, but still don't know what is causing the problem.
    (1) Put a fresh battery in the camera - same results
(1.5) Used a different port in the new hub - same results
    (2) Put the card in the card slot in the back of my iMac - no problems except that one image I knew about last week. The six new images imported.
    (3) Tried again using the cable - still same error
    (4) Changed cables - my husband has the same camera - still same error
    (4) Put the card in his camera with his cable - still same error
    (5) Put the card in a card reader and used the same slot in the new hub - no problems - same one wouldn't import but message that there are no new photos to import.
    (6) Moved the offending one image to the Trash while the card was in the card reader
    (7) Put the card back into my camera and used my cable. iPhoto had no error and displayed the message there are no new photos.
    Conclusion:
    Not the camera
    Not the cable
    Not the hub
Must remove bad photo from the card
However, I have not had to do that before. I went through several imports on vacation when there was one bad image and just ignored it each time.
Any idea why this is happening now?
    Thank you
