  • HELP!  "The file "DSC06830.JPG" could not be opened because it is empty."

I am getting this error when I try to drag and drop a photo to my desktop, or if I try to print. Need pics printed for my Grandpas funeral- please please help!

That's telling you the file is corrupt. Can you view it at full size?

  • "file could not be opened because it is empty"

This is not the first time I've gotten this error message after using iPhoto. Before I post photos online, I edit them in iPhoto. Then, for the ease of uploading, I transfer them all to a folder I create on the desktop, and upload directly from there. A good chunk of photos then become unreadable and "unuploadable" - when I open them from the folder it says that "file DSCN0691.jpg could not be opened because it is empty", and they don't upload.
What is this problem? It's really bothersome and prevents me from uploading photos that I want to share.
    Any tips? Thanks!

"The file XXXX.jpeg could not be opened because it is empty"
    This happened to me today.
I cropped a photo in iPhoto, pressed apply and done.
When I dragged the photo to desktop, there was a jpeg icon
When I tried to open the file it was empty with the error message.

  • The photo "IMG_5310.JPG" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found.

Each time I open iPhoto or plug in a device and iPhoto automatically opens, the following message appears five times, looking for photos I assume I deleted, perhaps the wrong way.
The photo “IMG_5310.JPG” could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found.
I've searched the computer for the images, but they seem to be permanently deleted.  How do I "reset" iPhoto from looking for these photos and remove this "Alert"?
    Sincerely,
    Mark T

mark, you are asking about iPhoto on your Mac, right? This is the iPhoto on IOS devices forum - iPads, iPhones, etc. Next time please post your question in the iLIfe iPhoto forum; you will get more help there.
But to your question. This error message usually occurs, when original image files are missing from your iPhoto library. iPhoto keeps the original images and the edited versions, and when the originals are removed from the iPhoto Library by deleting them from the Finder, then the photos can no longer be edited, exported, printed.
Does iPhoot open correctly, after the alert appears? Can you work with it, after the alert finishes? Then delete the corresponding edited versions of the missing originals from your iPhoto library. The versions probably will be marked by an exclamation point, when you browse your photos.
To prevent this from happening again, open the iPhoto "Preferences" > "Advaced" panel and make sure the option "Importing: Copy items to the iPhoto LIbrary" is enabled. Otherwise original files may be stored outside your iPhoto library and you can accidentally delete them and loose valuable photos.

  • "The photo "EGY_7895.jpg" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found"

I'm getting the following message when I click on any photo in my most recent import: "The photo “xxx.jpg” could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found". The thumbnails are in iphoto but it dosen't seems to reconize the files when I try to go in to edit. I have iphoto version 8.1.2. Help please.

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
It sounds like this batch of photos were imported as Referenced.

  • HT5129 The photo "claire-66.jpg" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found.

because of the mobile me switch i can not use my iphoto. i had some albums in my mobile me web gallery and one of them i had deleted the original files so it will not allow me to use my iphoto because it keeps giving me this error message and i can't get rid of it.
"The photo “claire-66.jpg” could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found."
I don't have the original photo anymore so i can not link it to it.

So, your iPhoto Library is now corrupted.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • The file "?" could not be opened because it is empty.

I put about 30 photos on my thumb drive so I could take them with me.  I saw them on the drive at one point, now on some of them I am getting the error; "The file "?" could not be opened because it is empty."   The file still is large in size, and there is data there, but "Preview" will not open it. These are important photos for work, and I want to know if there is any other way to retrieve them.  Also, does anyone out there know why it did this.  Only some of the photos can no longer be opened, and I did NOT edit any of them.  I simply drug them over to a portable drive.
    Thank you,
    Darren

Does this involve iPhoto in some way?

  • Mail V6.3 pdf attachments "the file could not be opened because it is empty"

I received an email with a pdf document attached.  When I try to open it by saving it or directly from the email, I get the message "The File 'filename' could not be opened because it is empty."
The file extension is correct with .pdf. Adobe is up to date. It will not open in Preview either. No updates needed for Mac OS 10.8.3.

No changes were made. I saw in one of the threads where someone said to repair the database(which didn't work) or Rebuild the database(which did work). Thanks to one all for the support.

how did you do these delations? in the iPhoto window or using the finder
do you have a referenced library ( (The iPhoto advanced preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library" has been unchecked) which is strongly NOT recommended. ) or a managed library (that option is in its default checked state)

You may have to research any newer possibilities in trouble-
shooting or resolving issues by use of iPhoto Support page.
Since I don't use iPhoto as a primary editor or storage, the
details on the topic aren't so good. I prefer ToyViewer editor.

  • Word file could not be opened because it is empty

Several times now, not always, I save a document from a website, like a receipt, or a week's menu.   When I go back to see it in Word, I get, 'File could not be opened because it is empty.'    I have Word:mac 2008 v. 12.3.6   Any suggestions?  Thank You.

Since Word is a Microsoft product, you might have better chance for an answer if you post on the Microsoft forum.

  • Aperture exported version "could not be opened because it is empty"

I just upgraded Aperture today.   It seemed to work well for editing the first 40+ photos.  I could make edits and, if desired, export the version to a USB drive.  After exporting about 10 photos succesfully, the process stopped working.  I did not change my process at all, but all subsequent exported photos have either had a grey picture thumbnail that opens as a solid grey picture or have had a generic "jpeg" thumbnail about which an error box opens stating, "The file xxx.jpg could not be opended because it is empty."   Does anyone know what the problem is?

    HOw do you do this?
We can try to help but we must know what is going on and what you have done - exactly How are you transferring the photos to a folder?
It doesnt work that way either. Idk why. And I don't want to upload every single picture, just certain ones.
And again - how does it not work?
And using the media browser you select individual photos - you do not have to "upload every single picture"
And now when I click on certain photos to enlarge them in iPhoto, the screen turns black; the picture disappears.
And once again - what does this mean? Does a large ! appear or exactly what happens
Ugh. There seems to be some sort of glitch, but I dont know.
help us out and we can help you -we just are not mind readers
and there are no "glitches" like this in iPhoto - it is probably either user error or a data problem

  • I get this alert when opening iPhoto.  "The photo "4ea09cdb.jpg" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found." When I select "find photo" library is greyed out.

I have to either hit cancel about 100 times to allow me to get into iphoto.  I think this may have to do with photos I have edited over time where the original no longer exists but only the .edited.jpg...
    OSX 10.8.2
    iPhoto 9.4.2

these do not matchup - they can not all be correct
Yes, I found the Masters file and they all appear to be there...
Some of the files in question say "The alias “AtlantisPhoto_01_2.jpg” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found."  when I try to access in the master file.
It was checked when I went into preferences already.
It sounds like you have unchecked the copy option sometime and imported photos while it was unchecked that no longer have the originals available on the same path as they were when imported
We only know what you tell us and answers can only be based on the information you provide
And whjile you are looking inside the iPhoto library be very careful that you do not make any changes of any sort - there are no user servicable parts in it and any changes can destroy your library

  • The photo "2009.02.17-10.jpg" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found.

    Hello!
I have a problem with viewing photos in iPhoto.
I loaded photos from my desktop to iPhoto as usually and deleted them from the computer (I don't use the option "Copy items to iPhoto Library"). I always do it that way and i don't have such problem with other photos. They can be opened any time I want.
So what could happen and is it possible to recover my photos?
