"the file itunes library.itl could not be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes" but yet i have the latest version of itunes
i recently bought a new ipod touch 4g and everything went terribly. first i couldn't sync my songs then i couldn't restore and update it and now itunes won't even open after i completely uninstalled it deleted it and redownloaded it off of apple.com like an hour ago.
Unless you deliberately downgraded iTunes this may be a sign of a corrupt library. See Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash.

Itunes will not launch, it shows message of "itunes library .itl" can not be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes. I tried opene it in save mode but I had the same problem.
If you still have an issue you may have to see about using the iTunes version (application) included with Snow Leopard 10.6 from the installer or an another one if available online, and see if that will install.
Sometimes you may have uninstall the bits left in your system by the earlier (or later) iTunes installers; as they all leave a trace and these can stop a different version of iTunes from being installed.

so my computer got unplugged and its battery died right as it was finishing an iTunes update. when i restarted it, i got the above message. i re-installed iTunes from the website and that didn't help. i went directly to the mp3 files and tried to open those. no go there either. :frustrating!!!
when the "dialog box" shows up with that message, there is an "OK" button, but there when you click on it, it just closes. there is no prompt or hint at what one can do to remedy this situation. any help?
btw, i have a Dell laptop running WindowsXP with all my iTunes music on a detached hard drive.I already thanked you but under the other "post". I am ecstatically happy to have my old system back, and will never upgrade anything again .. fear I'm doomed to happy dinausaur-hood.

Why can't I get into my itunes library anymore? I've purchased hundreds of songs in the past 3 years. When it asks me "would you like to download the newer version? I click yes and successfully download the latest yet I still cant access my library.

The error message I get when I try to open iTunes says, The file iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." It gives me the option to Quit or Download iTunes. When I select Download iTunes it checks for software updates and says iTunes is up todate. I then downloaded the latest version of iTunes and this didn't help. It still wouldn't open because of the same error.
Normally you get this message if you downgrade to an earlier version of iTunes, but it can sometimes happen if an upgrade doesn't go through properly.
You should be able to wok round this by rebuilding your library from the xml file as in this Apple article:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451 -
Error message - "The iTunes Library.itl could not be read because it was
created by a newer version of iTunes."
I was having problems with iTunes so I uninstalled it and then reinstalled it by running an iTunesSetUp.exe, which reinstalled the iTunes version 6.0.4. I now however am getting the error message mentioned above.
I tried copying my library (with songs) to my desktop and also moved the library.itl file, then tried to reopen itunes, but still get the same message.
Can anyone help me please?????. Many thanks. Are you sure you want to use such an out of date version of iTunes?
You can install the latest version from the Apple site:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
If you must use the old version you will have to recreate your library.
Close iTunes
Drag both iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music library.xml to the desktop.
Open iTunes - this should create an empty library.
You could try recreating your library by using File>>Import to import iTunes Music Library.xml although I am not certain that this will work with such an old version, you didn't say which version you were using before.
Otherwise, if that doesn't work, you can add your iTunes Music folder with File>>Add folder to Library. -
How can I locate my iTunes library files? When I click on my iTunes icon rather than my iTunes files I receive, " The file iTunes Library.itl." cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." I have already tried to update my iTunes program.
Had same problem and solved it without having to reinstore any music or movies:
1. Delete old Library file
2. Go to the 'Previous iTunes Libraries' folder and copy one of the earlier files - note, they have a date extension, e.g. 'iTunes Library 2011-11-01'.
3. Paste this file in your iTuners folder and rename file by removing the date extension - 'iTunes Library'
You should have all your music and paylists in tact, unless it was a really old previous file. -
My itunes library won't come on when I connect to my computer. It comes up with the following message:

Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash -
I have a new Mac and I migrated mi old one to this. I can not open iTunes because a message stating "iTunes Library.itl" can not be opened because it was created in more recent version of iTunes. There is not a new version to download. How can I fix this?
Go to iTunes > about iTunes. What version are you running? If necessary, hold down the option key while starting iTunes and create a new, test library so it will start.
