The file ituneslibrary.itl cannot be read

Whenever I try to open iTunes, the error message "The file “iTunes Library.itl” cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. Would you like to download iTunes now?" pops up. But when I check for an update, none are avaliable and iTunes still won't open.
Can anyone help?

Hello tvilla47,
I would recommend deleting iTunes from your Applications folder, and downloading iTunes from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/, and install it.
The current version of iTunes is 11.0.4.
All the very best,
Sterling

I have just just installed a new version of itunes. When i tried to run the new version it came up with the message "The file ituneslibrary.itl cannot be read because it was created by newer version of itunes.
I installed the new version because itunes had not recognised my ipod nano 5G, and told me to reinstall. Itunes selected which version to install, so I don't understand what is going on. To add insult to injury it installed a pile of malware which I am still trying to get rid off.
    Any advice would be helpful

  • Error message the file "itunes.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.

I had to do a system recovery with a prior date.  now I get an error message: the file "iTunes.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.  Anyone have a solution?

I know this is an old thread, but the information in it solved my current problem (Windows Vista, upgraded to iTunes 11.2 and resulted in this same .itl error message).
So, I'm here to thank turingtest2 for his excellent instructions to fix my problem. One of tt2's many detailed instructional tips). THANK YOU TURINGTEST2!
PS I'm generally reluctant to "mess with files and such, preferring to use Windows Restore, because it just doesn't seem right to me that end users of Apple devices should have to get into the guts of files and such. Sadly, I have finally just accepted that iOS updates never work right and I either have to deal with work-around fixes or never update. Eventually we do need to update or there will be other problems. All I can say is, I'm sure glad there are folks like turingtest2 here who spend so much time helping us.

  • I am getting this message"The files ITunesLibrary.it cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.  How can I add itunes so I can access my music?

I was told to uninstall my itunes and reinstall.  After doing that, I am getting this message,"The files iTunesLibrary.it cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes".  How can I get my music back on the computer?

    Hi there catbarn111,
You may want to try re-creating the iTunes Library as an initial troubleshooting step. Take a look at the article below for more information.

  • TS3212 the file iTunes itl cannot be read, and I cannot down loan iTunes, it won't let me, in Lion Osx

I had to replace my new mac mini with a newer one because the hardware was bad.  An even exchange, and the information was transferred.  I cannot open itunes, and get the message "the file itunes itl cannot be read" and I am advised to download a new version of itunes.  The software update won't download any new version because I am told that itunes is already up to date.  I tried downloading from the apple site, and can't get itunes to open anyway. Anybody can help?

Perhaps check to see if you're accidentally running two different versions of iTunes. There's some information on troubleshooting that in the Opening iTunes section of the following document:

  • 7.5, 7.6  upgrade problem iTunesLibrary.itl cannot be read

Going CRAZY! Apple support stinks. I want to talk to a body via phone or e-mail.
Upgrade from v7.4 to 7.5 yielded problems. While previewing tracks before import, itunes hangs. Music continues to play even after disc eject. Uninstalled & reinstalled without fix. Tried subsequent 7.5 updates without success. Reinstalled 7.4 successfully for normal operation. Thought problem would be fixed with v7.5 and it wasn't. Tried to reinstall 7.4 and itunes won't open. I get an error message that reads "the file "ituneslibrary.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes."

If you didn't back up your 7.4 library files before upgrading to 7.5, as you have found, you will get that "newer version" error message.
See if there is anything in a previous iTunes library folder that will work with 7.4, as mentioned in this article
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93732
For the future, you might want to back up those library files before each iTunes upgrade....just in case you have to fall back to the older release.
I am stuck with 7.1 on my desktop PC, since any later iTunes version renders my DVD burner useless.

  • After years of using iTunes on my G4 suddenly it won't open.  Error message says "The file "iTunes Library" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes".  What do I do?s

After years of using iTunes on my G4 suddenly it won't open.  Error message says "The file "iTunes Library" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes".  What do I do?  I have been attempting to move my Library to a newer MacBook Pro.

Error message when opening itunes...The itunes library.itl cannot be read because it was created in a newer version of itunes... how do i fix, it will not open with any of my ipod, ipad, iphone.

I don't know why this error occurs, unless you have attempted to downgrade iTunes.
This method should get you up and running again.
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • Error message The file "iTunes Library" cannot be read

I just got a new iMac and at the store they migrated what was on my Mac Book onto the iMac. Some updates came up last night and the iTunes one timed out before it could update. I hadn't used iTunes yet or connected the external hard drive where all the music files are, so iTunes is still just full of 'empty' files. The error message I get is:
The file "iTunes Library" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.
    Any suggestions? Thanks
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.0.x)

Look in your Previous iTunes libraries folder to see if there is a backup library you can use - the file name will include the date it was saved, however it may be very out of date. To use a backup linrary, save your exitsting itunes library.itl somewhere then copy the backup library into your iTunes folder and rename it iTunes Library.itl.
If not, with iTunes closed, drag you iTunes library.itl out of the iTunes folder to your desktop. When you next start iTunes it will create an empty library. Add your iTunes Music folder with File>>Add Folder to Library.

looking for help i try to open my itunes and i get an error message..... the itunes litrary itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes???

Unless you've recently attempted to downgrade iTunes this is probably a sign of a corrupt library file. See Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash.

  • HT1451 The file itunes library cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes

The file itunes library cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes

Either you've downgraded iTunes without rolling back to an earlier version of your library file, or the library file is corrupt. Restore using the following method.
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library as iTunes Library (Corrupt) and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library. (If you see the .itl extensions then you should include them in the renamed files.) Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
If your last previous library is from a while ago you may want to look in the iTunes folder for .tmp files. On occasion one of these may be a more recent version of your library and can be renamed in a similar fashion, editing the extension this time.

I recently transfered everything from my emac to another one but now when I try to open iTunes I get the window that states: The file "iTunes Library" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. The computer I transfered to had a bunch of files on it and I got full ownership of what was already there, so, how do I get to my iTunes library, I do have access as an administrator to the iTunes library (that works just fine) already there and I guess I must have had a newer version ofiTunes on my defunt eMac....

Tell us some version numbers please, of your Mac OS versions and iTunes versions on both computers (two eMacs yes?).

That is a pretty good guess.Try updating the second eMac's iTunes to at least the version that was on the first.

    Hello,
    Did you reinstall lately?
My 10.4.11 Drive seemes to have iTunes 7.6.2 on it, have you tried Software update to see if iTunes is listed?
Another 10.4.11 drive has iTunes 6.05 on it... I hate upgrading iTunes, seems worse at every upgrade.
The 10.5.8 drive I'm booted from now has iTunes 8.02 on it.
