The File/Open settings

Hi there,
The default appearance of my File/Open and File/Save window has changed, and I neither know how nor do I know how to change it back.
The problem is that when I File/Save, it would open the File/Save window and display the folders/files by in a List (vs Thumbnail, Detail, etc.) by Name, which is what I desire.
But, somehow that changed. When I open the File/Save (or File/Open) window, the display is now in a List (which is prefered) by Date with the most recent at the top. This is definitely not my preference and is a setback to certain tasks I do.
I reset my defaults by doing alt-ctrl-shift upon start-up, but that has not affected my File/Save-File/Open window.
Can anyone tell me how to get back to where I was before? I am somewhat desparate for this fix and have no idea how it changed. So, heck, if anyone knows certain keystrokes I might have inadverdently hit that affected the change in the first place, I'd love to know what they are do I don't duplicate them!
I am on Photoshop CS3.
Thanks! I appreciate your help!

Thanks for the reply! It turned out that "Version Cue" was enabled, so I disabled it. However, the same problem still occurs. My "File/Open" does not open sorted by name. And my "File/Save As" functions also are not sorted as they had been in the past. I think they are sorting by type, not name. I simply want to find the place that tells Photoshop what the default sort should be.
It has always been unclear to me how Photoshop decides what view to give me when I want to open or save a file. Sometimes it opens to a view that I was just saving to or opening from, and sometimes it goes back to My Pictures.
And I erred before. I have Photoshop CS2, not CS3.
Looking forward...

  • JavaScript to store the file open count in a text file

    Hi,
    Can we write a javascript in pdf such that when the pdf file is opened, the file open count is stored in a text file locally. Every time, the pdf file is opened, the count should be incremented in the text file. This is basically to check how many time a particular pdf file is opened by an user.
    The text file path should be defined in the javascript.

    Reader is not able to write to a text file, so you will have to use a global persistent variable.
    The script you would use is very simple, and should be set up to run when the document is opened. You can do this by creating a document-level script. The code can look something like:
    // Set up a routine that creates
    // and/or increments a global count
    // variable that keeps track of how
    // many times the document has been
    // opened on this machine
    (function () {
        // Set up the variable name
        // This needs to be unique for each document
        var count_var = "my_doc_open_count";
        // Create global variable if it doesn't already exist
        // and make it persistent
        if (typeof global[count_var] === "undefined") {
            global[count_var] = 0;
            global.setPersistent(count_var, true);
        // Increment the counter
        global[count_var] += 1;
        // Notify user how many times the document has been opened
        // This is mostly for testing, so comment it out if not needed
        app.alert("This document has been opened " + global[count_var] + " times.", 3);
    Read the Acrobat JavaScript reference and the accompanying scripting guide for more information. Note that Reader users may have to enable the use of globally persistent variables for this to work.

  • How change the File Open With list of apps?

    In Bridge CS3, how does one edit the list of applications in the File > Open With menu (also available from the contextual menu for any image).
    The list contains a number of applications that I would never use to open an image, and I would like to add to it, a new image editor (pixelmator) that does not appear in it. I have looked in the Bridge Help and the Preferences dialog and don't see any option to do this.

    OK, I have now learned that Mac OS keeps the list of which apps to open what, in the "launch services database."
    This database can be cleaned up and reset which somewhat simplifies the list that is displayed by the Finder OR by Bridge CS3.
    Here is an article on how to reset the launchdb:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20031215144430486
    Be sure to read all the way to the end as there are updated instructions down among the comments.
    Here is a thread in the Apple Support forums discussing the same issue, and it includes links to some 3rd-party programs that can reset launch services without use of a lengthy Terminal command:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1289317
    Even after rebuilding the launchdb, I find that a large number of apps are "registered" to open JPG files, including Camino, Opera, TextWrangler and others with only a tenuous connection to JPG. I don't understand why this is, and I would still like to find a way to limit the JPG Open-With list to a few graphics programs. But cleaning up the launchdb as described in the linked pages, did get rid of some programs and added some missing ones.
    Hope this actually constructive info is useful to others.

  • How can I change the File-- Open menu item?

    In Bridge CS4, I want an option to open a selected JPEG photo in Photoshop CS4, which I believe would be the File-->Open command.  However, in that menu item I only have the option of selecting ACDSee Pro to open a file with.
    Is there a way to change this menu item so that I can select Photoshop CS4 to open a JPEG with?
    Thanks,
    John

    Thanks John.  Go into the Windows Folder options and associating CS4 with JPEG fixed the problem.  In fact, when I do File-->Open now in Bridge CS4, all of my photo editors appear on the list.

  • Enable to record the File Open Dialog window using SHDB

    Hi All,
    I am using CV02N for BDC recording.
    In this transaction I hae a File Browser button, which opens File Open Dialog window (using CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES=>FILE_OPEN_DIALOG method). Using this I can given the file name and Open.
    But, this File Open Dialog windows is not getting recorded using SHDB.
    Please help me how to solve this problem.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Shashidhar

    Hi,
    I doubt you can record the file open functionality in BDC.
    if there is any field which requries file path and directory better make it uniform and hard code it.

    When opening Powerpoint, the file opens outside of the screen, and I cannot use it, nor can I open a new ppt. How do I rectify this?

    Usually the Window menu allows you to adjust window placement in Microsoft Office products.
    If not, connect an external display or projector and change the resolution to the maximum.
    Save the document with the window residing on the main screen with the Dock.
    That will force it to open on the main screen in the future.

  • When I open a pdf file, Firefox opens a blank window, then the file opens in a Adobe Reader window. How can I stop the blank window?

    Whether I am using Firefox 3.6.8 or Thunderbird 3.0.6, clicking on a pdf file opens a new window. After a few seconds the pdf file opens in a separate Adobe Reader window. When I am done with that and close it, I still have to go back and close out the blank window. Got to be a configuration issue some place. I have tried several settings under Tools/Options, but haven't found the right setting yet. Any suggestions?

    Thank you very much for the reply. I followed your instructions. This fixed half of the problem. Links to pdf files that are on web pages now come up with a box that asks if I want to open or save the file, without a blank browser window in the background. That is great.
    When I tested the fix with pdf file links in email, the problem still exists. I tested links in Outlook Express, Yahoo mail, and Gmail. Any time I click on a pdf link in an email, a blank Firefox window opens and then I get the small window that asks me if I want to open or save the file. Sounds like this is a configuration issue, not a technical problem. Thanks for your help.

  • How to add shortcuts to the [File] Open dialog box?

    Is it possible to programatically add shortcuts to the dialog box that opens when you press the browse button attached to a file/path control? I'd like to be able to add to the list which includes, My Recent Documents, Desktop, My Documents, My Computer, My Network Places.

    Setting the Places bar on the Windows Common Dialog will require modifications to the registry. To change the Places bar, refer to this webpage on WindowsITPro:
    WinITPro: How can I edit the default Places bar quick links in Windows XP's and Windows 2000's Open...
    Then, you’ll want to look at the Write Configuration Settings File.vi (LabVIEW 7.1\examples\file\config.llb\Write Configuration Settings File.vi) for an example of how to write information to a configuration file using the configuration VIs.
    Best of luck!
    Hope this helps!

  • I can't open my mail unless I use the Enter/Return key or go to the File -Open Message

    Up until yesterday I could open an email just by double clicking the message. Now if I want to open a message I have to use the Enter/Return key or go into FILE and press Open Message.
    The only thing different since yesterday morning is that I decided to turn off File Vault --that process took all day but finally finished and that's when I ran into problems with mail.
    I've checked my mail settings and they are the same as before. Have OSX Yosemite 10.10.1 installed.

    Is this problem in Firefox? It sounds as if you are referring to an email program such as Apple Mail or Mozilla Thunderbird. As far as I know, you can't open emails in Firefox with File > Open Message because there is no such option.

    Thank you for your response. I finally found out why this was happening. It had to do with the Trackpad settings for my Mac. I adjusted the track speed to a slower speed as it was set quite fast. This seems to have fixed the problem :)
    I’m not too computer savy so sometimes things can be a little confusing trying to figure out whats what and where to look for solutions.

  • Stopping the File Open At the End of Loop

    How can I make the script skip the "docRef = open(fileList[i])" at the end of the iteration once all the files are opened? Is there a way to get rid of
    this by perhaps getting the total number of files on a folder and assigned it as a variable 'max", such that if the variable "i" is eventually equal to
    "max," the the script will not execute the last action on the iteration?
    As of now, this loop (taken from Paul Riggott's response to my question before regarding folder processing) is generating the following error:
    Error 8000: Cannot open the file because the open options are incorrect
    Line: 20
    -> docRef=open(fileList[i]);
    Here is the script I am working on:
    var startDisplayDialogs = app.displayDialogs
    app.displayDialogs = DialogModes.NO
    // ask the user for the input and output folders
    var inputFolder = Folder.selectDialog("Select a folder to process")
    var outputFolder = Folder.selectDialog("Select a folder for the output files")
    if (inputFolder != null && outputFolder != null) {
    // get all the files found in this folder
    var fileList = inputFolder.getFiles()
    // open each one in turn
    for (var i = 0; i < fileList.length; i++) {
    // The fileList includes both folders and files so open only files
    if (fileList[i] instanceof File && fileList[i].hidden == false) {
    // get a reference to the new document
    var docRef = open(fileList[i]);

    The main problem is
    var fileList = inputFolder.getFiles();
    You are getting a list of all files and folders that exist in that folder, they could be text files etc.
    It is better to specify the file types IE:
    var fileList = inputFolder.getFiles(/\.(jpg|tif||psd|)$/i);
    As this will only get a list of files that are jpg, tif or psd

  • Set thumbnail view as default in the File open dialog box

    When I hit File/Open in PS, the dialog box always opens in"details" and I have to hit the select view icon and chose "thumbnails". I've looked in preferences but can't find anything to change the default to Thumbnails. Is it that you have to do this somewhere in Windows OS ?

    What versions of Photoshop and Windows are you running?
    I ask, because running Photoshop CS5 and Windows 7 x64 when I select a view - e.g., Large Icons (which yields thumbnails) it sticks.  Make sure you actually open a file after making the change.

  • The "Recently Used" entry in the file open/save dialog

    The file selection dialog (eg: save/open/etc) on gtk applications has a "Recently Used" option:
    Over size imaged reduced to link
    This has generally not shown any options for me (for some reason, firefox suddenly showed a single entry this time).
    I find no use for it either, so rather than having it list recent entries I'd like this option gone (or at least stop being the default!), and the last-used (or maybe just my home) being shown by default.
    Any hints on how to disable this? What about the "Search" option just above it (equally non-working, and equally undesired by myself).
    Moderator edit:  Converted over sized thumbnail to text.  (Hint:  Your img embedded in a url was perfect -- except the image should be a thumbnail, not the full sized image.  Feel free to edit this post and remove my redaction if you want to use img tags with a small thumbnail)

    No, I'm not using gnome. And this was actually the first time I saw this dialog non-empty. However, it's not related to gtk2 or gtk3: I see the same behaviour on gtk3 apps.
    I all honesty though, I don't care about recently used being populated because I anticipate having the same results you've just described.

    Thanks, I'm aware of this, but this merely covers the firefox download option (firefox seems to actually remember the last used), not all gtk apps in general.

  • I can't open pdf files with Ibooks app. The files open for some seconds and then they disappear! Thanks

    Files open and disappear in few seconds!

    It sounds like the app is crashing for whatever reason. Start with simple, easy things.
    Quit iBooks and restart the iPad.
    Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
    Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
    If those things do not help - you may want to consider deleting the iBooks app and reinstall it. Make sue that all of your books and pdf files have been backed up and synced with iTunes before you delete the app.
