The file "x.numbers" couldn't be opened.

I don't use numbers on the Mac often, so don't know how long this problem has been there for (I generally use the iPad version).  When I try and open any of my iCloud saved versions it comes up with an error: The file "x.numbers" couldn't be opened.  This happens with all of my documents, all of which open fine on the iPad or iCloud.com.  If I download the document from iCloud it will open from my computer.  If I then save it back to the cloud I can no longer open it.  Everything is up to date, with the latest version (OS 10.9.4, Numbers 3.2).  Any advice?

Thanks very much for the instructions.  I encountered this problem this morning myself and the recommendation fixed the problem immediately.  When things like this happen with iCloud and Pages it makes me wonder if I might be better off using something else, having just recently had to fix the problem that the current Pages can't read documents I created with a much earlier version until they were "upgraded" by an interim version.

  • Preview gives error "The file ... couldn't be opened because you don't have permission to view it."

Yesterday I could access all my pdf´s with Preview. Today I get the error "The file ... couldn’t be opened because you don’t have permission to view it." upon opening a pdf file with Preview. All other pdf viewers open the files with no problem.
I repaired permissions with disk utitlity with no success.

I booted into recovery and repaired disk permissions with the disk utility from there. That fixed it. Apperently it repairs more stuff than when you´re booted into the OS. But what an annoying bug, this happened twice to me already by now...

This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -Rh $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word, all lower case, with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’renot going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Textedit won't allow me to save .txt file "The file "Untitled.txt" couldn't be opened."

I have searched for this but couldn't find the answer for it. Everytime I use textedit and then tried to save my file I get the following error "The file "Untitled.txt" couldn't be opened." I am trying to save the file to my desktop with .txt extension but still not able to do so and it is driving me crazy.

I have recently upgraded to Mavericks 10.9.2 - there are a number of glitches that I have noticed. Hopefully Apple will remedy the issues soon.
Recently TextEdit has been behaving weirdly.
I type a document and go to save and I get the following:
I think you'll agree that the document exists, this is a screenshot of it.
I know there is a "/" in the name and that Mac doesn't like it but the same problem exists with whatever name is used and in whichever location is selected for the save.
Having run Macintosh since OS 8.6 I do have some working knowledge of how to resolve problems. My immediate action was to reboot the system. Nothing - same issue. I then moved to the Preferences directory (~/Library/Preferences) and did the usual trashing of the applications preferences. I noticed that in Mavericks there are way more associated preferences for each app. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, I trashed the lot and emptied the trash. I was not able to empty the trash entirely - the system informed me that one of the documents was in use. I did not have TextEdit running. I removed the offending file from the command line using rm.
I then rebooted the system again and opened TextEdit and tried again and lo and behold the documents were able to be saved. However on inspection of the Preferences again I now find that TextEdit seems to have no preferences? See the Spotlight search below.
Whilst I tend to adhere to the adage "if it ain't broke - don't fix it" in this case I would really rather like to see the TextEdit Prefs.
Maybe there is a Mac-guru out there that can explain a) what is going on here b) how to reinstate some prefs for TextEdit as it would seem pretty normal that they exist. and c) what happens if TextEdit throws a wobbler again, I have no prefs to trash
At this time of writing TextEdit seems to be behaving normally aside from the above mentioned prefs issue.

Yes thanks, it completed and took a very long time but it was my first backup I did with my new laptop, so I think this is expected.

  • The file ... couldn't be opened error (numbers, pages, keynote)

    this just started happening today.
appears i can no longer open or save numbers / pages / keynote files. i get the following message:
additionally, when i try to save a file, i get this message:
wondering if anyone else is / has encountered this.
there are no updates available in the app store, and files open fine in icloud.

This actually worked for me too, just note that "Documents & Data" is now called "iCloud Drive". Everything else stays as you described it. Thanks!
Message to Apple: it's a real shame that this problem still exists after a year and a half. It's not the Apple anymore that we used to know. And so you know, after seeing more and more glitches appearing in Mac OS I actually start to doubt my eventually upcoming purchases of my new phones and watches. Please try to come out of your marketing strategies once in a while and just make sure that the stuff you're creating is actually working. Back in the days that was the top priority.

    Thanks Lyra,
I may be doing something wrong because looking at the "Purchased" in iBooks I only see all the books that I actually purchased, none of the iBooks that I created in iBooks Author shows up. I can re-download all the iBooks I've purchased and some in iCouds, but the ones I've created  in iBooks Author are no where to be found.
    Any help is much appreciated,

This might not help you at this point, but maybe if someone else comes along later, it will help them solve their problem.
I just had this exact same problem and from the looks of your document title, my fix might work for yours as well.  I fixed the file by editing the index.xml file in the corrupted numbers file.  Numbers '09 doesn't save documents as folders by default anymore, but you should be able to unzip them to folders using something like Unarchiver, 7zip, or a similar program (I used my default archive extraction program, which is called "The Unarchiver").  My problem was that I had put an obscure unicode character in the name of one of my tables.  Look at the console output in Console.app and see if something similar doesn't show up.  I just went into the text file, changed the offending characters to something from ASCII, and renamed the (unzipped) folder to have the .numbers extension, and the file openned without any issues.
Anyway, like I said, probably won't help at this point, but maybe it will help someone else later.

  • The document "abc.numbers" could not be opened [Numbers 09]

I’m getting the document “abc.numbers” could not be opened message. I’ve seen this posted about Numbers ’08 but I’m getting this dreaded message with Numbers ’09.
I’ve unzipped the file and cannot find anything that looks out of the ordinary to me. The buildVersionHistory.plist looks fine, as does the index.xml and QuickLook folder. When I compare these to a new, empty numbers file I can’t see differences besides those expected.
Any help would be very much appreciated!

May you attach the beast to a mail and send them to my mailbox ?
Click my blue name to get my address.
I wiil try to discover what is wrong.
I guess that something is wrong in the index.xml file.
I received several documents with this kind of problem.
In some of them, the xml file was truncated, in others, it appeared as a 'correctly built' file but Numbers was unable to decipher it. One erroneous character is sufficient to render such a file unusable.
This is why I wrote many times : backup, backup, backup…
This means : keep consecutive copies as my backup script is able to build.

  • Error: The document "filename.pages" couldn't be opened.

I got a new Mac Mini and put 2009 iWork on it and immediately ran the update. I can't open any documents!! All I get is "The document “filename.pages” couldn’t be opened." What is going on? I have a legitimate iWork disc and DO not want to have to buy anything again!

It is ALL documents I have made in ANY iWork program previously. I have included a couple.
I have also discovered that I cannot create any NEW documents. The template window comes up but is a black screen. If I hit "New Document" from the open window nothing comes up.

  • The file "card07_F.png" couldn't be saved in the folder "Resources".

The App Store indicates that I have to update iPhoto. I have tried several times and get the error that it cannot download the app with:
The file “card07_F.png” couldn’t be saved in the folder “Resources”.
    This happen to anyone else?

If you aren't having any problems with the iPhoto app, just ignore the update badge.
However, if you do have issues with iPhoto in the future, deleting the app and reintsalling only takes a minute or two.
Make sure to use this free utility Download AppCleaner for Mac
That will uninstall the app and all the associated files. Your iPhoto library will note be affected one way or another.
How to re download apps from the Mac App Store:
Open the App Store. From the menu bar click Store > Sign In
Click Purchases from the top of the App Store window.
Select which apps you want to re download. Then right or control click where you see Installed  then click Install.
Make sure and use the same Apple ID used for the original purchase.
