The files appear to be unsupported or damaged

I can drag these same pictures to Lightroom and work on them but I can't import them for catalog.  Any suggestions.  They preview in any viewer but I can't import for catalog.

I have the latest lightroom.
Hi ... I have seen many people state that they have the latest version, only to find out that they are wrong, they don't have the latest version. So please tell us the number of the version of Lightroom.
I have over 3000 photos dating back 6 years and NONE will import!
Please tell us exactly what steps you are trying in Lightroom, and what happens, what you see on the screen, what Lightroom does (if anything) in detail. If there are error messages, please state them word-for-word.

  • "The files appears to be unsupported or damaged" - I can't open the files in any software

I have just returned from a trip where i was on the road for 7 weeks and out of 5000 shots have 30 corrupted DNG files, one of which i would love to save please can you help? My work flow:
Shoot DNG files using Leica M9
Take SD card out sporadically and using SD card reader mount on Macbook air (very old) v1
Open Lightroom 4 on macbook air import to HD
Drag and drop in Lightroom on to external HD
Realised pretty soon some thing was not right with images but continued work flow with out problems with any other import
On returning home i imported project into a new LR5 project on my 15'' Macbook pro running OsX10.8.5, processor 2Ghz intel i7 with 8gb ram
IN LR 5.5(just updated) on my Macbook pro & Macbook air LR4 I can see the preview of the corrupted images in library mode but when go to Develop i get the "The files appears to be unsupported or damaged". In Photoshop CS5 i get "Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognise this type of file"
The corrupt files are the same size 36.4MB as the non corrupt images suggesting the info is there. Is there software anyone can suggest that will open the file with the corruption so i can some how fix in photoshop? The SD card was one of many used and was over written many times after so i can not retrieve the images that way i'm afraid.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and i can forward you a copy of the file if you have the time.

Realised pretty soon some thing was not right with images but continued work flow with out problems with any other import
    Exactly what was not right?
Most likely a hardware problem causing corruption in the transfer of files from SD card to your computer. It could be the SD card itself, card reader, hard disk or memory.
    Side issue:
Open Lightroom 4 on macbook air import to HD
Drag and drop in Lightroom on to external HD
why don't you save yourself a step and import directly to the external HD (and thus also produce one less place where file corruption can happen)?

  • JPG´s will not import into lightroom 1.4.1 ("the file appears to be unsupported or damaged")

I have converted a collection of raw files with Autopano pro to jpgs.
When importing them into lightroom 1.4.1, part of the collection is not displayed in lightroom and the software gives me the msg "the file appears to be unsupported or damaged".
The same files open up with any other jpg supporting software.
Can anybody help me with this

I was not aware of this pano program but have downloaded a trial copy and will give it a go. I just did a set of images that PTGUI could not deal with and it looks like this program did it perfectly even without muddling with the control points. Its also dealing with 1 image where I cropped out a conflicting angle of view area.
I just imported the jpeg out of this package into LR with no problems. I edited it after import to LR with Photoshop CS3 to do a cleanup crop of the pan.
I'm very impressed with PanoPro right now. Will have to purchase. PLUS...it runs either Mac or PC!!! Solves yet another problem I've had with my conversion to Apple.

  • Roundtripping to PSE: "the file appears to be unsupported or damaged"

    Hi all,
After using Aperture for four years, I thought I would give Lightroom another try.  With Lightroom 5 and Photoshop Elements 11, when I roundtrip an image to PSE, it comes back to Lightroom, but I get a warning that says "the file appears to be unsupported or damaged."   I'm on a MacBook Pro (2010) with Mavericks and all the updates.
Somewhere in setting up Lightroom, it suggested working in 16-bits, but my PSE says it can only deal with images in 8-bits.  Is that part of the problem?
Many thanks for any help, experience, or advice.

    OSX 10.8.5   Lr5.3
I had this same problem with TIFF's in LR5.3  using Elements 11 and I didn't in the past.  I did some messing around and when I changed the tiff compression in the Lr export from ZIP to NONE the problem went completely away.  I didn't want ZIP anyway and I think it got automatically changed in an upgrade of Lr or Elements.  I did notice that SOMETIMES if I clicked away from the file with the error and then back a few times the file will load.
You are correct that only a subset of Elements functions work using 16bit  tiffs.

  • PLEASE HELP me-  LR3 such as:  The file appears to be unsupported or damaged.  What do I need to do?

Someone PLEASE HELP me…. I just copied many folders of files from one external hard drive to another, now I'm receiving messages (LR3)  such as:  The file appears to be unsupported or damaged.  What do I need to do to fix this?
Is there a PHONE number I can call to TALK to someone live??

You can upgrade to LR 3.6 at Product updates
My advice is to stop listening to Matt Kloskowski ... but nevertheless ... what he explained, dragging and dropping a folder to another hard disk, works as long as you are meticulous and never forget to do so. And if you're not meticulous about it (and most people probably aren't), then you don't have backups. The best way (and in my opinion ONLY way that works) is to use third-party software that will perform the backups of your photos and your catalog file automatically and regularly (every day or every week). The built-in catalog backup in Lightroom is an excellent way to back-up your catalog file, but it will not make backups of your photos.

  • The File Appears to Be Unsupported or Damaged

All of a sudden, I get the above msg whenever I double click on an image (RAW CR2 even JPGs) in the Library module or use navigator and click on Fit or Fill, etc. I can still bring the image into Develop OK but all files now splash this message across the top (within) the image.
Thumbnail views at various zoom levels are OK. Only get the msg in Loupe view.
Any suggestions on what might be going on.
Have been using LR 1.1 for about a week and have been importing my images from an external hard drive. Have about 7,000 images in LR.

I have encountered this problem as well. But after moving images between to external drives.
If I look in the file name field in the metadata panel I can see that the image has lost it's file extension. It says: "2006-12-26_18-59-34."
    But it should say: "2006-12-26_18-59-34.ORF".
And if I look in the sidecar files field below, LR shows this: "., .xmp".
But it should only say: ".xmp"
If I choose "show in finder" I will get to the right folder, but no image will be selected.
Removing the images and importing again will make things alright.
BUT if you haven't written out the xmp's you will probably loose all your settings on those images.
I'm interested in knowing if your files also have lost there file extensions in the file name field in the metadata panel? (On the disk they should be fine though, or at least they are for me).
And also if the error could be due to moving a folder in LR?
    /Andreas

  • Lightroom 1.4.1, Files appear to be unsupported or damaged

    Hello Everyone.
    Here are my specs:
    Lightroom 1.4.1
    Mac OS X 10.6.1
    Canon T1i   Raw Files  .CR2
Whenever I try to import files into Lightroom 1.4.1, I get the following error:
"The files appear to be unsupported or damaged."
This happens on every single image.  I can open them fine with Aperture, and Photoshop CS3.  The files are being imported to my computer, and are straight from the camera.
There are no updates available for Lightroom 1.4.1 when I check.   Anyone else have this problem?  Is there a fix?
    Thanks,
    Justin

That means the camera is probably not supported on LR 1.4. You either upgrade to LR 2 (costs money), or you use the most recent (free) dng converter to convert your CR2 files to dng files. LR 1.4 will read those fine.

  • Uh Oh - "The files appear to be unsupported or damanged. (169)

    That's a message I wish I wasn't seeing.
I have a new Nikon D300s.  I've shot a couple of rounds with a 4GB SanDisk Extreme IV 45-MB/s memory card.  Shooting strictly .NEF files.  The files all loaded into Lightroom fine.
Saturday I shot with a new 8GB SanDisk Extreme IV.  Only this time, when I try to load the files into Lightroom, nothing shows up and the "Import Results" window tells me "The files appear to be unsupported or damaged. (169)" -- that "169" being the number of files that aren't showing up.
The files are showing up in the LCD on the camera, so there must be something there; I tried to import them directly from the camera (instead of via a card reader), but the result was the same, "unsupported or damaged."
I used the same 8GB card for some flash tests on Friday.  They looked fine in the camera, I copied them to the computer before I reformatted the card.  But... now I'm looking at those files in the Lightroom importer, and guess what? All but one of them says "preview unavailable for this image."
I suspect this is not a Lightroom problem but at the moment I don't know where else to turn.
How is it possible that the files can show up on the LCD but not import into Lightroom (or show up in Bridge, either, for that matter) ?
I don't think I change any settings - the format is RAW at 12 bits.
Is it possible that I've got a bum card ?
If anybody reading this has ever encountered a similar dilemma and has any suggestions... I'd sure be grateful to hear 'em.
    Thanks,
    --PS

Maybe I did change a setting -- or, at least, choose a bad one?
    >The images you d/l'ed to the DT, do they import into LR? Are they about the right number of Megs?<
The images that are on the DT, they do NOT import into LR.  And they appear to be between 10 and 12 MB, so that is roughly the right size for the D300, isn't it? (The sensor is 12.3)
But now that I'm looking through the settings again, it appears I've selected ""Lossless compressed" for the RAW files format... and I suspect that's not a good setting for Lightroom (or anything else, for that matter).  Seems to me "Uncompressed" would be a better choice for RAW files...??
Is "Lossless compressed" a compatible file format for Lightroom?

  • Lightroom has trouble reading RAW files on my network drive ("The file appears to be unsupported or

Hey guys, I currently run LR5 on Mac OSX.  I've had my RAWs on an external HDD and have smart previews built for those files.  Recently, I upgraded to a new router, the ASUS RT-N65U, and plugged in my WD My Passport Ultra HDD (FAT32 filesystem) into to.  Now I've put my RAWs on the network drive, and verified via MD5 checksums that the files are being read correctly (albeit rather slowly) from the network drive.
However, whenever I try to view one of the photos on the network drive, Lightroom complains, "The file appears to be unsupported or damaged".  I've verified via MD5 that the files are not damaged.  Does anyone know how I can get LR to be happy with the files on my network drive?
(Bonus question: how do I make my network drive faster?)
    Thanks!

    Got RAWs from a D7000 and D600, LR v5.2 [922700].
Oddly things are working now... I ejectected the network drive in Finder and reconnected to my router.  Lightroom no longer has problems viewing the photos, even after I closed my laptop and reopenned it.  I think the problem might occur when my laptop goes to sleep for a long time and I reconnect.  Will repoert back when I try that.
I'm using an external HDD attached to my router.  The reason I don't plug the external HDD to my laptop directly is I don't want to keep doing it every time I want to access my photos, and my laptop only has limited disk capacity since it's an SSD.

  • Getting "file appears to be unsupported or damaged" with 2.3

    All,
I recently switched my main photo machine from windows to mac. My main catalog is on an external USB hard drive. Now, when I open the catalog, most of the photos in the library view have the small "hazard" indicator that says that the file appears to be unsupported or damaged. All the photos in my catalog are either .dng or .jpg.
Is there any good reason why this would be the case?
    Thanks,
    -MrB

I have just had the same problem with version 2.5. The issue relates to permissions in the mac os. On my main mac the permissions were set so that only the administrator on that machine could read/write file. When image files were transferred to my macbook pro I could no longer edit the files hence the error message of the op. I changed the permissions on the main mac so that anyone could read/write the files and then moved them again with no further problem.

  • Files appear to be unsupported or damaged

when trying to import my photos in lightroom 2 I keep getting this message.  Some import opperations were not performed.  Files appear to be unsupported or damaged.  Items 1 -100 Item 101-176.  Please help!!!!
Raw files shot with a  canon T1i.

Is the latest update Lightroom version 2 supposed to be able to support a Canon T1i?
If so, have you installed the latest update (2.7)?

  • File appears to be unsupported or damaged after exporting an image.

After exporting an Image I wanted to go back into the development module and make another tonal correction. After clicking on develop I received this error "File appears to be unsupported or damaged". What happened? I had just toned and exported it. The file is on an external hard drive and is a Canon MKII CR2. I'm using Lightroom 4 on a Mac Book Pro. Thanks.

Did you tell LR to add the exported photo to the library upon export and are now by mistake trying to work on the "re-imported export"?

  • "File appears to be unsupported or damaged" - possible to resync backups to catalogue treatments?

Been using Lightroom no problems for a year or so now, but today after importing about 1000 new pix I started getting this error on many, many of the new ones "File appears to be unsupported or damaged"... Started checking back on good files that I'd worked with yesterday and they started showing thie same error... I went back through the 20,000 in the catalogue and most of my pic are showing the error, tho there are random ones that appear ok.
I started a new catalogue and tried to import some of those file that were showing the problem, but no go... I think the drive may be dying or some kind of mass corruption as occured, tho I'm no techie. If I'm wrong and there a way to restore order please tell me.
Luckly I'd recently backed-up most of my pix t another drive, tho last month will be lost, and I'm wondering if theres a way to sync up the back-up pix so that all the treatments, etc., done on the originals can be reapplied or do I just have to start from scratch?

Here's an experiment to try. Do this with ONE photograph.
Identify a "corrupted" photo, where LR gives you the error message. Find its backup on the other drive, and replace the original with the backup. (This should be a copy of the backup, not a move of the backup).
Then, go into LR and see if the error has gone away for this photo.
I agree, it sounds like your original drive is having a problem, if necessary, we can provide instructions on how to fix the entire mess, or to temporarily use the backup drive.

  • Change from Pc to Mac now Lightroom gives error "files appear to be unsupported or damaged"

I recently upgraded from my PC to a Mac osx 7.1.
    I have Lightroom 2.
On my pc I can pull up any pictures off any of my SD cards (format: RAW). However, although I have installed LR2 onto my mac it will not allow me to open any of them. It gives me the error, "files appear to be unsuported or damaged."
They will open on my PC and also will open on my Mac in gimp. So I know the files are not damaged.
How can I fix this problem?
    Thanks!

Thank you so much for responding! How could I have forgotten that I had updated LR on my pc? ... I upgraded to 2.7 and it is now working perfectly with RAW files.
    Thank you!

  • "File appears to be unsupported or damaged"

I'm getting this notice on photos that I edited in LR, exported to PS to do some additional edits, then brought them back into LR to finish.  Everything was good.  Today I've had problems with CS3, ("application has unexpectedly quit"), but that seems to have been resolved by disabling and/or updating some of the plugins.  However, I'm still having problems with LR.  I can see the image just fine, but if I click on it to view it in "Develop", the image changes and looks like it's been corrupted.  (Thank goodness I have backups.)  I'm viewing the PSD file in LR when this happens.
I do have the latest updates for LR and CS3.  I've searched the forums to see if anyone else has had a similar problem.  Is this CS3 related or any idea what's going on?  I did send in the CS3 crash report for evaluation.
I just recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and have update 10.6.8 installed and I just started having these problems so is there any chance this is related?
    Grateful for any answers!

I am a Windows person so can't speak to anything related to your OS, but have some other general troubleshooting questions:
You are running LR 3.4.1, then?  What version of LR last worked with these images, LR 3.4.1, LR 3.4 or something earlier?  It is likely that LR is not the cause of the corruption, just it is the program that is showing it to you.  Seeing the image just fine means you can see the preview LR created earlier.  When you click on it, LR is re-reading the file and trying to recompute a new preview and apparently is getting an error so shows garbage.  The garbage might also be a video-driver issue where the image, itself, is fine, but LR can't display it properly.  Can you post a screenshot of the "corruption" you see in LR?
Has anything happened to these images outside of LR, between the time LR last touched them, and today?  For example, have they been re-edited in Photoshop or another program, or have they been stored on an external or backup drive for quite a while, or has the disk they are coming off of had any issues that have been corrected?
Do any of the images in question have Layers? To be able to work with a Layered PSD, LR needs the image to be saved with Maximize Compatibility set, which creates a Merged preview layer on top of all the others, and it is this preview layer that LR edits, not the underlying Layers.  If you were to re-edit that image in PS, and save it w/o Maximize Compatibility set, then LR wouldn't be able to work with the image.  I'm not saying this happened, or that the symptoms you're seeing are exactly consistent with this scenario, just using it as an example of something you could do outside of LR that might confuse LR.  It wouldn't mean the image is damaged, just that it is in a format that is incompatible with LR, and LR's message about being in an unsupported format is correct.
Another possibility is that the PSD files, themselves, have become damaged on the hard-drive they've been stored on, but then opening them with PS could also show the problem, unless the damage is limited to the preview layer which is all LR works with, and which PS might ignore and just recompute from the underlying layers, again.
If you have the PSDs in your backup, can you fix one of your problem images by restoring it from backup, and then first open it with CS3 and see if it reports anything, and assuming not, then, w/o saving it, try opening it with LR and see if it looks bad, and if it does, w/o adjusting anything in LR, exit out, and compare the byte-size of the image that just looked bad in LR with the byte-size of the PSD in your backup location and see if they are exactly the same or not.  If not, then LR may have actually done something to the image that made it corrupted, but if the file sizes are the same or the corruption isn't reported by LR or the corruption was reported by CS3, then LR is not the issue, something prior, is.
