Could i use a FLIP camcorder w/ photobooth instead of my built in camera. The reason is i thought i could get more into the frame & i want to use the effects in photobooth w/ the flip. The FLIP has a built in usb but i think it's for uploading video to your computer

From what you say, a prosumer camera is not what you want. The many choices, otherwise, can be confusing. I went through and tried to find a selection of cameras that have a firewire connection. This may not be all that each mfgr has with firewire, but it seemed representative. Note, they all use tape, I didn't see any from these companies that use other storage mediums (DVD, hard drive) and also have a firewire connection:
Canon standard definition: ZR850, ZR950
Canon high definition: HV20, HV30
Sony DCR-HC52, DCR-HC62
Panasonic PVGS80, PVGS83, PVGS85, PVGS320
Interesting that reading the Panasonic PVGS320 manual, it includes directions referencing iMovie for use on macs (didn't look at the other Panasonic manuals). Canon is also mac-friendly, not clear that Sony is, although those listed have firewire connections (Sony calls it iLink, Canon calls it IEEE-1394, and Panasonic is mini-DV IEEE-1394).
I haven't used any of the cameras listed, just wanted to find some that have a firewire connection, if you want to be able to hook it up to your Powerbook and use iMovie and iDVD.

HELP please with my insignia flip camcorder

I have a 5.0 insignia flip camcorder .... the specs list Movie Maker as one of two suggested editing programs for the video. I am very familiar with MM... so I download my avi files created by the insignia onto my harddrive ... then I open up Movie Maker ... then I import one of the avi files into MM and it imports fine but it won't PLAY. The first thing I would do is make sure you have DirectX 7.1 or a higher version of DirectX installed on your computer, and if you are using Microsoft XP you need to have Service Pack 2 installed on your computer also. You could also try installing the latest version of Windows Movie Maker, which is version 2.1. If none of this works I would suggest contacting Microsoft to troubleshoot the issue, and to get troubleshooting help on line you could click here. I hope this helps!

Flip Camcorder to FCE

What is the best way to take the videos from a Flip Ultra HD camcorder and be able to get the videos into FCE to be able to edit. Looks like the files are in MP4 when they enter FCE, but I'm tired of not being able to watch the edited videos because they are not rendered. I didn't have this issue using iMovie and I'm trying to learn how to use FCE.

I too am using the Flip Mino HD camcorder and FCE. I downloaded MPEG Streamclip and it worked perfectly.
I would love to learn more about the export options from Streamclip as it relates to Flip MPEG-4 video files. For example, I just chose the default Quick Time exporting method and the quality seemed to be decent. But I would like to get more exact with the type of exporting options of Streamclip.
Any suggestions on reading to help me learn more?

(CS6) Why is the flip horizontal/vertical moving the frame or image instead of just flipping it in the current frame position? CS5 did not do this.

It flips around the point you've picked in the Transform Proxy in the upper left of the Control panel (and has always done so). Click the center point and you'll get what you want.

I have a Canon SD 500 this should be enough because only can down load a max of 10mb to youtube. But I cannot use as a webcam to pass straight to computer which is fine,. Any Suggestions???

I use this Logitech USB Desktop Microphone for my iMovie voice-over, GarageBand podcasting, and other general purpose voice work. It works well for that, but it is obviously not a professional music quality mic.

The simplest way to connect a mic to your G5 is via USB. That simplicity, adequate sound quality, and low price are the main reasons I chose my Logitech.

If there are, I would suggest you stay with analog microphones. I may be wrong, but from this Google search for digital microphones, it seems to me that digital microphones are largely subjects of engineering studies at this time. You might find a microphone pre-amp that takes analog microphone inputs but provides a digital output signal you could connect to your Mac's digital input if you really want or need to use your digital in port.

How do I enable the flip/flop image button in the geometry room?

How do I enable the flip/flop buttons in the geometry room. A noob question to be sure, but I just can't figure it out. The buttons are grey, and won't respond when I click on them.
I shot on the HVX using the brevis adaptor, so the footage is all upside down. In FCP I corrected this, but upon importing the project into Color, the images were upside down again. Do I need to re-flip them in color for the final output? Or will they automatically be subject to the effects already in my time line when I export back to FCP? Either way I'd like to temporarily flip them in Color so I don't have to stand on my head while color correcting.
Anyone out there who can clue me in?

Use FCP... the geometry in COLOR was never meant to be more than a convenience, sort of... Final Touch always ignored everything in the Motion tab until recently, with ambiguous results. Now one doesn't really know where the flips flops and flies are coming from unless you've done them yourself but I do notice that keyframed geometry-composed camera moves rarely import or export correctly, and interlace is poison.

I want to use the flip transition to show Image 1 spinning and turning into Image 2. Is there an easy way to do this? Thanks.

The flip transition flips the whole slide rather than fliping the image on the slide. The effect is more like a page turn than a "flip"
this is an exaple using a shape, but it will work with any object on the page if sized and positioned correctly
place the image on the first slide
duplicate the image
paste it on the second slide
change the colour of the shape
set the transition on the first slide to Flip in Inspector > Transitions

I am a beginner in PrE7 and have installed the Flip editor (which cannot trim except from the beginning end end, no middle, and cannot split), presumably it installed the codec. My Flip .avi's do not work in PrE7, both video and audio are mangled. How do I "recompress" as described by Bruce?
One can also get .wmv files out of Flip - will these read in PrE7? What if I use a format conversion program like Movavi or Smartsoft? Could I convert to a format compatible with PrE7 ?

In QT Pro, you want to Export, not Save_As.
Now, I do not recall if QT Pro offers MS DV-AVI Type II (or if it's limited to Type I), but that would be the choice.
Even if it's only Type I, these can easily be batch converted to Type II, with a program like DigitalMedia Converter (Deskshare).
I'll go poke around and tell you exactly what the options are.

Try opening the file in iMovie
Try changing the filename extension to ".dv"

But my personal favorite idea is to just re-export the file from a PC in a better supported codec
(BTW If you don't have access to a PC then you can easily install Bootcamp on your Mac .... you can even download a free prerelease copy of Windows 7 to install on the Bootcamp partition if you're quick)

Oh my! Obviously, I don't know what I'm doing. But I do know that my goal was to do both---backup AND free some space. My iMAc is old (2006) and I upgraded it a year or so ago to Snow Leopard. I didn't think I had the capability of backing up without an external drive, but maybe I do since I upgraded. Do I?
But I bought this My Book mostly for freeing space because I like to make cards in Photoshop and I'm forever running out of space when I get too many layers (don't really know what I'm doing there, either).

Thank you so much for beng so prompt with your reply and patient with mine. I tried for so long to see the dialog box with the library listings. When I launched iPhoto, even with holding down the Option key, it kept immediately launching into the full screen. Finally, after an hour of doing it over and over again, it worked when I held the key down for 5 minutes. Then when I was typing my reply, I kept getting a message to "Request Time Out." Didn't know how to do that, so kept hitting the OK button and kept typing for another half minute. Finally, when ready to send, Safari couldn't do it. "Try again" exasperated me until I realized I would have to begin again and use Firefox. When I got there and ready to type, I got the message that my message had been retrienved and did I want to use it?!!

Actually I got it for my birthday and what I got was the Flip, Flip USB cords, Power adapter, and a cover. It was a on sale bundle but I just saw the same bundle on AZ at a lesser price. Can I take it into BB and get a price match.

Updated Lumia 710 with all the latest updates as of 8/1/2012. Tried testing the "flip to silence" feature by placing the phone on its face, but it doesn't work. How is it enabled?

Thanks for your post and welcome to the forum.
The flip to silence feature is automatic and will turn off the ringer tone when you flip the phone face down when it rings. It will not prevent the phone from ringing when you leave it face down though. In that case you have to flip the phone up and back down again to silence it.
This feature requires at least the 1600.3030.8773.12120 firmware revision (Settings>About>more information)
