The folder cant be opened because you dont have permissions

This is referring to my attempt to access my external 1TB LAcie Drive
The only thing i can think of is that i have recently renamed the Drive on my dektop
It holds only data and no apps
Welcome advice or pointers to the resolution of problem

Update
Please ignore - me thinking i know more than i do
i simply shut down checked cables and it worked upon restart
a tip that i recently discovered and as a very familiar mac os user was surprised i didnt know and thus maybe others also forgot or didnt notice
- Restart is different to ShutDown
When you want a full system reboot you must shutdown not just restart
Cheers

  • "File cant be opened because you dont have permission to use it"

Im suddenly getting this message on all the photos stored in my computer:  "File cant be opened because you dont have permission to use it"   If I click on 'Get Info' for pics, the "Sharing and Permissions" doesnt open either.  Im OS X 10.7.3   Help!

Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Launch the Terminal application by entering the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. If that doesn’t work, then in the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Drag or copy – do not type – the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    chmod -R -N ~
You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
    sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • When connecting my external hardrive to my mac, I can't copy files onto it or off of it. It gives me the message 'the operation cant be complete because you dont have permission to access some of the items' It has also been formatted to a mac.

It gives me the message 'the operation cant be complete because you dont have permission to access some of the items'
I tried to even format it to a mac to use it with time machine but it is saying i dont have ownership. I am gettin really frustrated with this, please help

Then use a proper backup application.
Periodically using drag & drop isn't very reliable or complete, and backing-up your entire system is much better than just some selected data.  When your internal HD fails (they all do, sooner or later) or something else awful happens, reinstalling everything can be a very large, tedious, and error-prone process.  Among other things, 3rd-party apps will have to be reinstalled from the original discs or re-downloaded, and purchase keys or serial numbers re-entered.
You already have Time Machine -- it's built-in to OSX, and very easy to use.  You might want to review the Time Machine Tutorial, and perhaps browse Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
And/or, you can use a 3rd-party "cloning" application such as SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner.   See Time Machine vs. Clones and Archives for an overview of the differences.

  • The operation cant be completed because you dont have permission to access some of the items

First of all sorry if my gammar isnt the best, as I suffer for Dylexia and spell and gammar check isnt that good yet!
Has anyone ran into the same issue when copying files to a network share or removable drive where you have full access over and you get a good old error message
"operation cant be completed because you dont have permission to access some of the items" or and apple random number code that you need to good (so much for a good gui with having to google for the number codes!)
It really annoyes me as no matter what operating system you use it never outputs a reports to inform what "items" it has issues with and there locations so you can copy them manually.
its not too bad when its a few items but when it is 50 or so items in several folders you are copying and the os decedes it doesnt like you and makes up an poor error message such as the one above I really want to throw it out the window...
I have check for premissions on the destination and all are ok .
i have also check and none of the files are locked or read only.
I am sure I am not the only one who want the OS to explain what file and its location caused the issue.
Does anyone know the fix or uses tools that bypass the os annoying errors.
As the folder I have been trying to copy has only copied 348 of the 1591 files across.
    Thanks for the help!

    that1coolkid,
which Terminal “trick” have you already tried?

  • I lost my ipad, but i cant found it, because i dont have my icloud on in the ipad

i lost my ipad, but i cant found it, because i dont have my icloud on in the ipad

Yes, really. I'm sorry to hear that you lost your iPad, but your question is a bit like asking why you can't see in the dark when the lights are not on. As  Diavonex said, if you didn't set up iCloud, and in particular Find my iPad, you cannot track it. hopefully you at least had a passcode enabled.
    Read this: https://www.apple.com/icloud/find-my-iphone.html
Also follow Apple's recommendations for what to do If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is lost or stolen.

  • HT201441 I got a used iphone 4s from a pawn shop and I cant activate it because i dont have the past owners icloud info is there anyway to unlock it and put in my information.

I got a used iphone 4s from a pawn shop and I cant activate it because I dont have the past owners icloud info is there anyway to unlock it and put in my information?

Take it back to whomever you purchased it from and ask for a refund. There is no way to get past the "Activation Lock".

  • Operation could not be completed because you dont have access to some files

    Hi guys,
Recently since an update not long ago ever since i have been trying to copy stuff into my NAS (Thecus N5200) it comes up with a problem saying
"Operation could not be completed because you do not have access to some files"
I have read some places who say that this is due to some permission errors or some of the files get locked somehow and means you cant copy it properly however i have checked these files and it is not the case. I have looked online and even called up Apple to see what they could tell me but even they said that they havent had any calls regarding this problem before. The person from Apple suggested i try doing a Disk Permissions repair and for a while it works...but 5 minutes later it happens again.
What can i do to fix it? I will be extremely unhappy if i have to keep doing this every time i copy something. Sometimes Repair Disk Permissions wont change a **** thing. This is ******** because its never happened before and only started recently

sorry for the long correspondance. I sort of "forgot" about this thread and was using usb to transfer files (which is quite annoying).
AFP is enabled which means i believe it is connecting to the server through AFP. The funny thing is that it copies pretty much all the way to the end and then says "operation could not be completed because you dont have access to some files" . Im not sure what it has to do with disk permissions but sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesnt.
Thanks for the link Barney, looks like im not the only one suffering from these issues. I was connecting via smb://server before, i just tried mounting it via afp://xxx.xxx.x.xx . i will see how it goes but some people say its slower? for documents i dont mind but i hope apple comes up with a solution. i dont want to be copying large tv show files to the server at anything less than what i was getting before
edit: i just looked at the logs of previous connections with servers on the mac and i found there was a difference between how i mounted this server recently and it a while back. recently i had been trying to connect using smb://n5200 and in the past before snowleopard it had been smb://N5200. I tried once again to connect using smb://N5200 and it works flawlessly (for the moment). im going to keep trying to copy different files to see if its "fixed". perhaps the introduction of snowleopard made the OS more picky about capitals.
    i shall keep you informed

I tried to install windows 7 in my macbook pro late 2011 but i tried to create partions after it installed and it turn to dynamic disks and i can't access mac or win 7 what should I do i cant format it because i dont have a backup

It's not that you can't format it because you have no backup, it's because you'll lose everything when you do. Lesson learned. Always have a backup.

    Sorry abaot my english

  • HT2736 What do I do when, I make a new Apple ID and its not rewed by iTunes and it ask for the iTunes gift card code and you dont have one. what do Ido?

I'm on my iPod and I made a new Apple ID cause I reset my iPod. I go to download an app, but when it says use exsiting apple ID or Creat a new Apple ID, I say exsisting. it says that my Apple ID was not review by iTunes store I put all the info in so it can read it then it says "iTunes Gift Cards and iTunes Gifts code, I don't have one... what do I do?????

The gift card field is optional, you don't have to fill it in - and as cards are not available in all countries (and they are country-specific, they can only be used in their country of issue) you might not be able to fill it in anyway.
If it's a new account, and you didn't use the instructions on this page when creating it :http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534, then you will need to enter payment details on the account before you will be able to download any item from the store with it.

  • CANT ACTIVATE IPAD BECAUSE I DONT HAVE THE OWNERS ICLOUD INFO

I BOUGHT AN IPAD AT A PAWN SHOP AND I TRIED TO WIPE IT B/C THE PREVIOUS USERS INFO WAS STILL ON IT. I CANT GET PAST THE ACTIVATION PAGE. HELP

Return it and get your money back if you can. It's useless to you. There is no way to bypass activation lock. There is a very high probability that:
    a) The device is lost or was stolen.
    b) The owner of the pawn shop is and idiot and did not ensure that Find my iPhone was turned off before buying it from who ever pawned it.
Either way, you can't use it. At all.

  • Library Cant Be Saved. You dont have enough Access Priveledges.????????????

So up until a few weeks ago, all was well with iTunes and Windows 7 and had been for months. Then I received an error message stating, "The iTunes Library cannot be saved. You do not have enough access priviledges." So basically, no changes or additions I make to my music stick. every time I open iTunes random changes still show up and others randomly change.
I've since checked with our IT people, tried changing Folder types, re-installed iTunes, tried to move the media files and plenty more. NOTHING WORKS!
After a lot of looking around on different forums, it seems that I'm not alone. Does Apple plan to repair whatever this bug is? I cant remember a time I got this angry with this product.
    Does anyone have any answers?

Our IT company has installed VIPRE Enterprise on our machines. Not sure if that's one of the two you asked about or not. I know that the IT company administrates that app though.
Interesting ... usually the "can't be saved" messages are caused by security software real-time scans interfering with writes to iTunes library files. The ESET products are by far the worst offenders in this regard, but other products might also cause trouble.
Are you able to configure your VIPRE so it isn't doing realtime scanning of the iTunes library and content files? On a Windows 7 system, the default location for those items is in the following folder:
    C:\Users\<YourUserAccountName>\My Music\iTunes

  • Just downloaded aperture 3.  Wont open because i dont have iPhoto.  why?

Do I really need iphoto for aperture 3 to run?? I just upgraded to mountain lion, didn't ever think i needed the newest iphoto...

Where is your Aperture library located? This error message sometimes means something differently. Is the library on a volume not formatted MacOS X extended, on a NAS, in a shared folder?
If your library loacation is o.k. (local volume, formatted MacOS X extended, not a shared folder), use the Aperture library First Aid tools to rebuild the Aperture library: see Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual
Also, you should be able to download iPhoto again from the AppStore, if iPhoto 9.xxx came preinstalled on your Mac, as described in the paragraph "Restoring iLife applications after Internet Restore of OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion" in this support article: Accept iLife: OS X: About OS X Recovery

  • Cant restore 80GB Ipod because I dont have the Internet???

So my wife bought me an 80gb Ipod and shipped it out to me (Im in Iraq). I hooked it up to my computer and it immediately started to work and sync all my music and what not onto it. I believe at the time I was using Itunes version 7.3. Well then I hooked it up to a friends computer and tried putting some music onto it and when I tried to eject it, it was taking forever! His computer was crazy slow so I got tired of waiting and just pulled the usb cord out of the computer. A few days later I tried to use it and all the music and videos were off the ipod but my photos were still on it. I tried to plug it into my computer and now im getting a message saying that itunes cannot read the contents of my ipod and that I need to go into the summary tab and restore it. So I try and restore the ipod but I CANT restore it because I dont have an active internet connection. And I will NOT be able to get an active internet connection to my laptop simply because im in Iraq!
So my question is, is there any other way I can restore the Ipod without the internet?? I downloaded and installed the new version of itunes 7.5 and it still doesnt wanna work or restore. I have no idea what to do.
We tried hooking it up to a friends computer and he said he found and fixed a virus that was on the ipod and then tried to bring it up on his computer. To our luck his computer recognized the ipod and it brought up all my music in his itunes. We tried syncing his library with my ipod, which it did! but when we ejected the Ipod. It still said no music or videos on it. But if you look at the memory space. It shows that it did infact sync his music but its labeled as "other" and not music. I then tried to hook it back up on my computer and it doesnt read it at all! I need help please!

Have you given the following a try?
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/#
Otherwise, I'd say are you positive that iTunes on your computer and on your buddies computer were the same version? Reason I ask is my wife and I just bought iPods last weekend. She got a Nano and I got a Classic. I plugged hers in first. Got the updates and updated iTunes as well. After all that and charging a while I tried mine. Nothing. I can only assume that the almighty OS known as Winblows was confused by the whole thing and thus thought my iPod was already updated to the latest software which I think is 1.0.3. Or something like that. I eventually got mine going but differences in versions is certainly a possibility.
Also, did you buddy have a USB 2.0 connection or 1.1? I noticed my wife's Nano taking much longer to charge than it should have. That's when I realized I had my stupid USB hub plugged into a USB 1.1 port on my computer instead of 2.0. So I'm just assuming this but I would say that could also cause the iPod to go slower. Just more to possibly explain why it was moving slow on your buddies computer.
Look at your iTunes and if you iPod does show up look to see what version of software it has. Could be the culprit. Unless this really does boil down to an internet connection which would be kind of stupid if you know you've got the latest software. iTunes shouldn't force you to do that. Hope I've helped in some way anyway. If not, good luck with this.
And aside from the iPod question, thanks for your service overseas. You guys are all certainly thought of here a lot and are appreciated. Stay safe!
