The folder "iTunes" is on a locked disk, no write permissions...

I realize this subject has been posted a billion times over, but I haven't been able to find any definitive solution and I'm having the issue every time I try to open iTunes. I've been using it just fine up until it updated to the latest version (10.2.1). I went to import a CD yesterday, and I got the message when trying to open the program. It was giving me an "iTunes failed to run, unexpected error occured (-50)" but that stopped after I reinstalled it the first time. The program will open when I run it as an administrator, but not regularly. I've reinstalled twice, the first time I just uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled, the second I removed everything related to Apple and reinstalled it all. I've checked permissions, and I have full permissions for my admin account, my personal account, the creator/owner (me), etc for the shortcut, and for the iTunes folder in the Music library. I can't seem to change the permissions for the Creator/owner for the iTunes folder in my System Files folder, however.. The users, administrators, and my personal account all have full permissions, but when I try to change the permisssions for the creator/owner, it just doesn't seem to save it. I can go through the steps to do it, but it erases the boxes when I click "apply" or "ok". Is there anything that has been proven to fix this issue? Any help is appreciated.

System files folder? Not sure what you're talking about, here.
Windows 7 is funny with permissions. I had a guest folder try & lock me out from my admin account the other day.
I had to end up taking full control & ownership of a folder one level up, and applying those permissions changes to all subfolders.

I then bought a new MacBookPro. I has a TimeMachine back up but due to battery cutoff it was blocked and the time machine could not be accessed. I could however copy to my new computer the information.

I've already right-clicked on the application, clicked "get info", and changed it so all people listed in the "Sharing & Permissions" section have the "read & write" privilage.
The error message is referring to your iTunes library, not your iTunes application.
You need to check and fix the permissions of the iTunes folder in your iTunes library. This is by default located in your "Music" folder.
Select the folder Music > iTunes  in the Finder, right click on it or Ctrl Click and click "Get Info". At the bottom of the contextual window thatwill  pop up, disclose the Sharing and Permissions brick, change your status from Read only to Read & Write. You may need to click the padlock icon to make changes.

    It worked before.

Open Disk Utility via Spotlight or in the Applications folder stored within the Utilities folder. Close all applications and 3rd party software and choose "Repair Disk Permissions." Reboot the computer when finished, and test to see if the issue is resolved.

Right-click on your main iTunes folder and click Properties, then go to the Security tab and click Advanced. If necessary grant your account and SYSTEM full control of this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to replace permissions on child objects which will repair permissions throughout the library. This is the XP dialog but Windows 7 shouldn't be too different.
If it won't let you change the permissions use the Owner tab to take ownneship from an account with administror privileges.

Post this in the iTunes forum as it does not pertain to an iPod Shuffle.

  • The folder Itunes is on a locked disk

Hi there. I am using a Dell lattitude 420 running Windows Vista. Last week when I clicked on the Itunes startup, I got the following message "The folder Itunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write permisions for this folder". I tried deleting Itunes and downloading a new Itunes, this was to no avail. I was hoping someone out there running Vista has encountered this problem and can offer a solution! thanks so much!
    steve

Jumping in - with VIsta permissions it might just be easier to set the entire itunes folder for FULL control. Just checking that it's not read-only doesn't work in a lot of cases.

  • "The folder "iTunes" is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissio

"The folder "iTunes" is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder." Thats the error I have been getting recently. So I go on my pc after like 3 days of not using it, and all of a sudden I am getting the error in my title when I open itunes. I tried re installing- nothing. I googled this problem and tried EVERYTHING they said... making it not read only, allowing everyone to have permission... etc... Can someone please help! I am running windows 7 64bit. thank you!

On the permission thing, you say you have done this, but just to double check, the account you are using needs to have full control of the iTunes folder.

If you account does have full control of the iTunes folder, try a shift key start.
Hold down the shift key and start iTunes, keep holding the shift key until you are prompted to choose a library.
Navigate to your iTunes folder and choose iTunes Library.itl.

  • The folder "ITunes" is on a locked disk or you do not have write permission

I just tried transferring all my songs from my PC to my new MacBook. I followed all the directions on the Apple website, but now when I try to open ITunes on my Mac a window pops up telling me..."The folder ITunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder." I also accidentally deleted all my music from my old computer so I don't know what to do. I think all my music is on my new computer, but I don't know how to access it.

I just went through this problem with a newly created user (should be the same for you, being a new user yourself). I had to go into the Music folder for the user and move the iTunes folder out of the Music folder onto my desktop (this already had all of my itunes music in it). You can find that folder by double clicking the "MacIntosh HD" on your desktop, then clicking the "Music" icon on the left side of the window. If you see an iTunes folder in there move it to the trash (unless you have music in there, then move it to your desktop). That would solve the problem of the locked disk issue. Now after you open itunes and agree to the terms of use make sure that the "find music" box or similar is checked. It will automatically find your music folder on your desktop. After iTunes has completed the process of uploading the music, you can trash your original itunes folder. This is exactly how I fixed this problem for myself.
