The font on these forums looks terrible

The font on these forums and many other parts of the Adobe.com site look terrible on my computer. This is on Windows XP, and I tried it on all the big browsers, and they all look like this:

We know there are some combinations of browser and OS that break the anti-aliasing system - early versions of Chrome and remote desktop installations both have problems.
This is a known problem? So that means you would rather use a web font that looks pretty much like any other commonly available font for most people, knowing that for others it is a pain to read. It doesn't seem worthwhile. You end up with a font that is marginally (if at all) "better" for most people, and much worse for the rest.

Please reply with details of your system configuration.
You can blame my system configuration, and if other sites looked this bad on my browser I would agree. But the rest of the internet does not look like this, as far as I've seen, so I don't think of it as my problem. I suppose this makes me sound stubborn, but consider the user experience; I'm browsing the internet, everything looks fine, then I get to your site and it looks bad. And I'm supposed to think something is wrong with my computer?

Subject: Dear Oracle: PLEASE improve the SEARCH on these forums!!!
I have been getting frustrated using the search on these forums. I find the content very useful (especially as I cannot seem to find any other forums for Oracle Portal) but the search facility is very poor.
Firstly, the Search will on search for an exact match in the body of the messages, not the subject at all! This is very annoying as people usually sum-up there question in the subject and often do not repeat the subject in the message.
Secondly, the search looks for exact matches of your search string, so searching for more than one word become difficult. Bascially, it does only an exact match, not a word search, so forget about using keywords to search on as you would do in every other search engine and be very carful of the order of your words, you'll get a completly different set of results by swaping the order of your words... :(
eg. Selecting "ALL FORUMS", try searching for "Customizing Change Password Page". no hits? ok try "Customizing Password" still no hits? ok try "Customizing the Password". still no hits? ok just try "customizing". You get 10 Pages of 20 (Oracle conviently puts them over 10 pages so you cannot view them all on a html page and do your own secondary search using CTRL-F). Well, this is too many, lets just try "Change Password". again 20 x 10+ pages. At least this time we've got some that also have the work customizing in the subject. If only we got here on the first search... Don't even think of adding the word "PDK" or "Example" to your search...
I have already provided feedback to Oracle on this matter (and am still waiting for a reply). If you would also like the search improved, please also send Oracle some feedback and make this forum more useful. If enough people pester them they might think it's important enought to change. link below:

    Cheers,
    Tim.
P.S. In the meantime, does anyone know of any other good Portal forums?

Couldn't agree more, if only the search was as good as on Metalink...

  • Do the users on these Forums know?

Do the users on these Forums know that you can click on their user name and see a list of all their postings? Try it some time and then tell me how much your worried about the supposed issues some of them are complaining about. All they're doing is detracting from the ability of the communities to help with  legitimate problems of the users who are not just trying to stir up trouble withfictious problems.

excellent observation. When I first started, new members like yourself couldn't report posts, but I have heard that you can now. If you see them (and can report them), report them as trolls and the mods will help clear out the kruft...

  • Most of the problems in these forums here...

Besides all the incorrect/bad English, is lack of information of which version
    Forms/Reports are being run.
And even when you do ask, you still don't get a response.

    Hi,
I agree with ThrashZone, delete the temp files as well as some browser history, cookies, form data, Internet Options\General\Delete...
Reset IE if possible if the above doesn't work.
Sometimes, too much traffic on your internet connection can also cause this kind issue when loading the website

    HEHE!
Hope this helps some others too. I had ''played'' a little bit with the Advanced settings of IE11. The setting that restored my ability to Reply and Quote in these forums here, is this:
    Enable DOM Storage
I just checked it back, and here I am!

  • How to make web pages easier to read?  If I increase the font size web pages look distorted and unusable.  The same goes for mail.  I love the ease of use with a MAC but at 55 I need better sized fonts without distorting the web sites?  Any suggestions?

As you can see I am new to MAC;s so please be  patient with me.

Yes, that made the fonts larger, but I lose viewing the full windows of Safari and Mail, the edges are cut off aand I cannot restore them by click and dragging them fully open again.   I appreciate the quick response, but I still have the same issue of ddistorted webpages and mail.

  • Is it possible to make the text in these forum webpages darker?

    Thanks.

Something I do that helps readability is block the site use.typekit.com by an entry in my hosts file:
    0.0.0.0 use.typekit.com
This causes the web page to avoid using the prescribed Adobe font and fall back to using Arial.  Here's what it looks like at 150% browser zoom, which is what I perceive is what you have set, up above...
It also may make things load faster, since the adobe-clean web font doesn't get downloaded.  The downside is that you don't see things precisely the way the Adobe marketeers intended.  In this case it may be a Good Thing.

  • Why does the font rendering in Italics look weird? It is displayed as a script with hugely elongated almos 19th-century letters.

Sometimes, when I open a page of say a newspaper or a blog, instead of the italicised version of a font, I get an elaborate curlicued text instead, like some 19th century version of Ialics. This has now been going oin for about 3 weeks. It went away briefly, but has now come back again.

You can do a check for corrupted and duplicate fonts and other font issues:

  • PDF exports look terrible - white lines in text

I have been u sing indesign for years and years all of the sudden my pdf exports look terrible. The images are pixelated and the text has white lines
    in it.
I used these pdf previews for my clients and I certainly cant use what Im getting from INDD right now. I have no idea what happened to cuase this.
Wish I could show you but any ideas would be great.
The following text has no formatting on it yet there are pixelated white lines? help?
    Thanks in advance.

Wow - thank you for all the responses. Yes it still happened with different fonts, different sizes of font etc... So I looked at my export settings and noticed that it was set to High Quality Print - Modified. I Switched it back to High Quality Print and it appear to have cleaned it up quite a bit.
Thank you all for your speedy responses.

  • Formatting code on these forums

When I copy code directly from codewarrior (with its nice colorcoding and white space and indenting) into this forum and post, everything is justified left with no colors or bolding and it's all in the forum font. I notice that some people are able to present code in these forums that looks like codewarrior code. Just wondering how one takes code from a source file and puts it in these forums looking like code should.
    Thanks,
    Maduin

  • What is the font in Finder?

Hi, just upgraded and the font used in Finder looks a little different (and nicer) but can't seem to determine what it is? Details on what it is, how to know and how to change much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    John

I have experienced this; for starters, try the PRAM reset. Then user Disk Utility to Repair Disk Permissions.
    PRAM reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    Using Disk Utility: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
If that doesn't fix it, go to your Applications folder and open the Font Book. From the left sidebar, select All Fonts. Then press COMMAND + A to highlight all. Then from the menu-bar, select File, then click on Validate Font. After that is complete, click on the "All" drop down, and select Warnings Or Errors. Then you could click "Select all fonts" options, then click Remove Checked on the bottom right.

  • [Solved] Font looks terrible in FireFox--need to install better one

Some forums, for example MobileRead and Unix.com, look terrible in FireFox on my new installation of Arch.  Or more specifically, the main font used looks terrible.
I had the exact same problem on Fedora a few years ago when I did a new installation.  I thought I rememberered that the solution there was to install some Lucida font.  But running the command "xlsfonts | grep lucida" gives me the same results on my Fedora and Arch systems.
I installed several font packages with pacman which improved other things but not this.
Any ideas?  Is anyone similarly afflicted?

    Excellent!  I used Kyansaa's solution:
    sudo pacman -R xorg-fonts-{75,100}dpi
    Now everything looks nice!
    Thank you.

  • Importing AVCHD and the quality looks terrible

I just tried importing my Canon Vixia HFG10 HD video clips and the results look terrible.  They look really good on the camera but in Premiere Pro 5.5 they don't.
I loaded the clips in the media browser and did a new-sequence-from-clip to match all of the specs.
    Any thoughts?
My inital browsing for solutions recommended buying some converters but after buying PP and a top-line camera I am not too jazzed about going to the wife and saying I need to buy more.

So people don't have to ask, it is a good idea to post at least a short list of your hardware

You have to swipe from right to left to delete mail.
In the settings, accessibility you can make fonts bolder, that helps a bit.
THe yellow paper...sorry, no tweak for that unless you find a different notes app to use.

  • I just bought a 13inch mac book with retina display. When Im using adobe illustrator or photoshop, the fonts and designs look pixelated! How can I fix this?

I just bought a 13inch mac book with retina display.
    2.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor with 3MB shared L3 cache. Version 10.9.4 / OS X Mavericks
When Im using adobe illustrator or photoshop, the fonts and designs look pixelated!
    How can I fix this?

    WOW!!
    That was great to hear.
I have just read this tread: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1626784?start=0&tstart=0
So therefore I was worry about Illustrator which I use most of all programs.
    Thank you !!

  • Why does the web look TERRIBLE on my new Retina display?

The new retina display is fantastic, but browsing the web looks horrible.  Can anything be done to improve the web browsing experience?

Most websites are designed to look good on low end computers, typically with a resolution of around 1024x768.
Our retina macbooks have such a high resolution display that they basically show the flaws you would not normally see on a low resolution display.Text that is rendered using the mac os system fonts should look beautiful, but low resolution pictures and non-native text will look terrible on any website or application.
There is no real fix for this issue, other than hoping the web in general starts moving to higher resoltuion content in the future. The same problem exists with the retina iPad, and in my opinion, things look even worse on the ipad since you tend to be zoomed in further while browsing the web.
