[THE Forum] Audio recording with Java / JMF

Hello,
I would like to gather any useful information about audio recording. I've worked on this area for months now and I am still facing many problems, namely:
Can't record on linux with JMF,
Can't pause on linux with JMF,
Problems when two soud cards are on the PC,
Problems with Windows NT,
When using the pause feature, the sound is transformed while recording a song.
If you have any quesitons, I'll try to answer. If you are the solution to one of these problems please let me know.
For the sound cards problem, when disabling one of the sound card it works.

Hi!
I'm developing a videoconferencing application on Linux and I can't
capture sound. I get messages like these: "Couldn't initialize audio device" or "java.io.IOException: Cannot open audio device for input."
My system: RedHat 7.3, J2SDK1.4.1, JMF2.1.1.c and SoundBlaster audio card.
Could you tell me how have you configured your system or how have you got capturing sound?
Thankyou.

How to revert to original, the extracted Audio Tracks with SoundBooth?
I have installed the Adobe "MasterCollectionSuite-CS5"-ITA with PremiereProCS5 and SoundboothCS5.
I made a few test with PremierePro Audio clips and used the option "Make a rendering and extract" with Soundbooth.
I want know, after that operation:
    - Exists an option (a shortcut) to revert automatically the audio tracks from the extracted Soundbooth clips to the original audio footage?
    - In other words, I want return to the original audio timeline situation, prior to make the extraction with Soundbooth. Is it possible?
    - I know just one method:
Click and drag the video clip from timeline and release the clip in the "Source"Monitor window. After that I can drag the video+audio at the same start-and-end point of the source and put it into timeline, at the same place...
But with this method I loose the applied effects and transitions from the edited clips in the timeline...
    Exists another method?
    Thanks!

    Dear  <http://forums.adobe.com/people/Shai+Schcolnik> Shai Schcolnik
After you have edited the Audio file in Soundbooth, you should:
    1)      Select the Original Footage in PremierePro > Project Folder
    2)      Select with RIGHT Click the Video+Audio Clip in PremierePro Timeline, and in RIGHT Click Menu choose “Replace/Substitute with clip” > “From Folder”
    3)      Now you can delete in PremierePro > ProjectFolder, the named Audio File “…_Extracted.wav” edited previously with Soundbooth!
The new one is your original footage!
    Best regards!

  • Audio recording with Satellite L300

I have a USB audio interface that I want to use for audio recording with the webcam and other software. I can monitor sound via USB interface but can't record.
In the CAS for webcam my USB is not listed as a device, so I can't select it, only the built in realtek mic.
    Any help much appreciated!!

Hi Akuma, hey thanks for replying. sorry I never checked back cos I thought my post had disappeared when I first tried to sort this problem out. I have tried (and am able to) select my Tascam US 122l interface in the control panel sound and audio devices , I've got the latest drivers and firmware downloaded. Ntrack studio, cubase, Kristal audio, all allow me to select my usb interface, for a few moments will record, always within 30 secs of recording or play back it makes a few squeeks and pops the craps out and won't work at all until the usb interface is unplugged and re plugged in. I've fiddled with all possible latency and buffering options where available as well, no joy! Same problem.
My usb interface worked beautifully with Kristal Audio downloaded onto my wife's slower, older pc with less memory also using vista, so the problem seems to be with the L300.
Thanks again Akuma, and thanks in advance if anyone can help with this problem that's seriously doing my head in!

  • Bug report: Quicktime Audio recording with multichannel interfaces

I have problems recording audio in Quicktime using a multichannel audio interface. I tried two firewire interfaces, an Apogee Ensemble and the RME Fireface. Both are supported by core audio and work as expected with any audio sequencer such as Garage band, Logic, Studio One etc. However, both show the same strange behavior in Quicktime 10.2 and as well in iMovie and FCPx:
First, i selected interface channels 1 / 2 in the audio-midi-settings window as the stereo input source. In the quicktime audio recording window, I select the audio interface (fireface or ensemble) as the audio source. I expected that the recorded audio would be stereo. However, regardless of these settings, the recording is always mono. Actually quicktime records only channel 1 and ignores all other channels. This might be a bug in Quicktime with regard to the handling of multichannel interfaces. The same bug occurs in Final Cut Pro X and iMovie, which seem to use the same audio engine as Quicktime. However, Garage band and Logic do not show the problem.
It does also not seem to occur with simple stereo interfaces. I tried a Logitech C920 webcam with a built-in stereo microphone and a Zoom Q2HD recorder used in stereo USB microphone mode. In both cases, the recordings in FCPx are 2 channel stereo as it should be. Thus the problem is specific for multichannel interfaces.
Can anybody reproduce or explain this behaviour?
I am using OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), MacBook Pro 15 Retina 2.3 GHz.
    Regards, Werner

It seems that apple has reacted to this bug report without notice. Recently I tried it once more with quicktime and an apogee ensemble interface. Surprisingly, the problem did not occur anymore. I have not tested it with iMovie and FCPX yet.
The sad side of Apples support strategy is that I spent time and money searching for a workaround without knowing that Apple had removed the bug in the meantime.

  • When we click on the copy botton record with same name should not be saved

    Hi,
Copy button will copy the record with the same name and will save it.our requirement is when we click on the copy botton ,record with same name should not be saved
we are performing this task in custom object 12 and exposed Opportunity Name in the layout.
Records with same Opportunity Name should not save ..when we copy the record
Can we perform any field validation on Opportunity Name field?
    Please help
please email me @ [email protected]
    Thanks
    Srinivas Merugu

Opportunities that are assoicated to the same account cannot have the same name. You cannot make this unique for your whole instance. The only way that you could do this would be to create a webservice application that checks this before you save the record.
What about defaulting the name each time this could make the record unique?

  • How do I sync a audio recording with video?

    Hi,
I recorded a concert using my DSLR and a separate sound recorder. What is the easiest way to sync these two up in PE10? I had hoped that at the least I could compare the wave files of both the original recording on the camera with the separate recording. But PE10 only shows the wave file of the recording from the camera. The wav file from the recorder is just shown as a green bar. Any ideas?
    cheers
    bill

First, what is the file format, and its specs. for the remote recorder?
Though the rates of modern cameras and digital recorders SHOULD match 100%, in the real-world, they seldom do. This make perfect syncing a labor intensive process.
One should do tests between the cameras and the recorders, to find out the % or error. Then, adjust their Audio to match first. As an example, one user in the PrPro Forum tested his Panasonic cameras, and his Zoom recorders, and found that the Zooms were off by 0.04% constantly. To correct this, he used the Time Remapping (with Maintain Pitch checked), and would apply that adjustment to all of the Zooms' files - perfect sync.
As for the Waveform not displaying for your remote recorder, did you allow those files to completely Conform (creation of the CFA and PEK files, the latter is the Waveform Display)? See this article: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/726693?tstart=30
Also, you should be able to increase the vertical zoom of your Audio Tracks, and hence any Clips on them, by hovering the Cursor over the junction between Tracks, in the Track Header, and when it turns into a = sign, with up/down arrows, click+drag. Then, you should be able to find commonality in the beginning, to sync up to. Tip: for this critical work, toggle the Snap feature OFF, with the S key.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • The best audio interface with Mac Mini using new & existing equipment?

    Hi,
I got my existing set-up back in 2003. I'm now about to update it.
I've talked to Apple Technical Support re which computer is best for me.
Some important questions remain in terms of the audio interface or sound bridge I should use.
I've detailed below my existing set-up, my existing configuration, my desired set-up (as recommended by Apple expert) and questions I have.
    Existing set-up:
    Hardware...
    1. ViewSonic HDMI 1080p Full HD LED monitor
    2. PowerMac G4 (PowerPC processor) computer
    3. PCI-424 soundcard within computer (works in conjunction with MOTU 2408 mk3 unit)
    4. MOTU 2408 mk3
    5. Quested monitors
    6. Focusrite Session Pack ff ISA220 compressor
    7. MOTU micro lite (midi-usb interface)
    8. Keyboard (yet to choose - I'll explain later)
    9. ADK Tube Condenser Commemorative Edition microphone
    10. ADK Tube Condenser Commemorative Edition microphone power box (supplies both power and phantom power)
    Software...
    11. Tiger 10.4.11 operating system
    12. Logic Studio 8 music program
    Desired set-up:
    1. ViewSonic HDMI 1080p Full HD LED monitor
    2. Mac Mini full spec = £999.00
    3. _______________________________________
    4. _______________________________________
    5. Quested monitors
    6. _______________________________________
    7. _______________________________________
    8. _______________________________________
    9. ADK Tube Condenser Commemorative Edition microphone
    10. ADK Tube Condenser Commemorative Edition microphone power box (supplies both power and phantom power)
    Software...
    11. Top-end operating system = Comes with Mac Mini
    12. Logic Pro X music program = £139.99
    Existing configuration:
ViewSonic HDMI 1080p Full HD LED monitor goes into PowerMac G4 (PowerPC processor) computer
PCI-424 soundcard within computer (works in conjunction with MOTU 2408 mk3 unit)
MOTU 2408 mk3 used as my audio interface for sound in and sound out. This means that the sound comes out of computer via the MOTU 2408 and out of my Quested monitors (they are active so self-powered) which are attached to the MOTU's outputs.
When I record vocals I sing into my ADK microphone (this microphone sources its own power from its own box which also feeds it Phantom Power) which is connected by a mic to jack cable to the Focusrite compressor which is connected by jack to jack cable to the MOTU 2408 which then goes into my computer via a firewire cable.
When I play keyboards or use my keyboard as a midi controller it connects to my computer via the MOTU micro lite (midi-usb interface).
I don't currently have a keyboard. I used to use my basic Yamaha PSR-540 keyboard as a midi controller but as it's not weighted and faulty I needed to get a new one. We got a new one via Thomann which was the M-Audio Pro Keys 88 keyboard but this quickly became faulty. We returned it and have since been considering other weighted keyboards. I am simply wanting a keyboard with Aftertouch, either 76 or 88 keys, weighted keys and very importantly, hammer action where the action is fast. I don't care for other controllers on the keyboard, on-board sounds, iPad compatibility or whatever.
    My Questions:
Q1) Can you recommend any keyboards meeting my specifications?
Q2) I can't imagine any of the Blue or other USB mics competing with my ADK and I'm quite happy with it. For vocals and when I've wanted to play the keyboard in as audio (not as a midi controller) I've used the Focusrite compressor to boost the sound. I'm not using many functions/presets on the compressor as I know it's best to record the sound of vocals mostly raw, is this correct, and if so is it worth me continuing to use this compressor or sell it?
Q3) Do I need to have the MOTU micro lite (midi to usb) unit? Don't most keyboards these days connect direct usb to usb on the computer?
Q4) I'm happy and used to the sound out from my Quested monitors. I'm happy and used to the sound in using my ADK microphone. What do I need for these to work best with the Mac Mini? Is my MOTU 2408 good for this, or is another MOTU product needed, or another product altogether?
Q5) Depending on (Q4) do I need a soundcard installed in the Mac Mini as I read on a forum that these days the audio interface acts like the soundcard?
Q6) I have such a bad connection to the internet it's like I have Dial-up!!! I use Airport Wireless which is connected to a router downstairs, which is 02 Broadband. Internet's not an issue downstairs on my girlfriend's intel PC which also uses a wireless connection but not Airport. Is this a problem because of my Airport, or do I need to get a router for upstairs, or should I connect it directy to the router downstairs by ethernet cable?
    Many thanks!

Is there a reason you don't want to use your current Tascam?

  • Is Logic Pro the Best Audio Recording Software for Mac?

Couple questions. I do a lot of audio production and work currently. I use a gateway with Cubase, and its not bad, but I feel like I need something mroe high end.
I'm looking at the 17 inch Imac. Does anyone record using this computer? How's it sound? Is there any way to put in a new soundcard or something if i don't like the current one?
Secondly, is logic pro the most advanced and best audio recording software for the mac? Are there others as well?
I know about Pro Tools, but it seems like there isn't anything high end enough that is TOO high end.
Does the Pro version have superior mixing capabilties. I am primarily going to be micing a guitar amp and having a mixer run into a firewire port, and also using a preamp for my guitar direct into the computers USB.
Lastly, how are the mixing features on Logic Pro vs. Logic Express? I do a lot of post production mixing as well, and use VST plugins. Speaking of that, will it accomodate using a drum program like BFD through VST or Midi like Cubase will?
    Thanks for your time guys.

Yes, you do indeed need sth more high end.

It's not an iMac, but a faithful PowerBook G4 that I am using. Apples Core Audio is awesome. Your sound, however, will depend on your interface.
Secondly, is logic pro the most advanced and best
audio recording software for the mac? Are there
    others as well?
That's why we are here, and that's why you ended up in this forum as well
To me personally, Logic sounds warmer and bigger than any ProTools system I've ever heard. From what yopu described as the work you need to do, there is no comparable application. Logic also offers you many more features above and beyond what you currently need to do.
I know about Pro Tools, but it seems like there isn't
anything high end enough that is TOO high end.
Everybody is using PT, and you should maybe get a Light Edition version of it. However, as stated above, Logic offers by far more possibilities.

capabilties. I am primarily going to be micing a
guitar amp and having a mixer run into a firewire

For your purpose, Logic does have superior mixing capabilities. In my humble opinion, only the popularity of PT made it become the choice of studios and engineers, but things are turning...

Logic Express? I do a lot of post production mixing
as well, and use VST plugins. Speaking of that, will
it accomodate using a drum program like BFD through

If you do post production mixing, forget about Logic Express altogether and go for Logic Pro. LP will accomodate tons of plug-ins, and it comes with a bunch of great one's as well!
The format for the plug-ins is called A(udio) U(nit) and works flawlessly. Many VST plug-ins are also available in AU format and the development of those is moving fast forward.
In other words, yes, you will be able to use BFD in Logic by means of the AU format.
    Thanks for your time guys.
    You're welcome.

  • Is Logic 911 the worst audio recorder on the planet?

    Disk too slow.
I'm recording one mono audio track to a dedicated audio drive inside my Mac Pro.
Or rather I would be if Logic wasn't interrupting my recording with a "disk too slow 10004" message.
When it's not doing that it's locking up with the flashing screen error no matter what key I press.
And just for good measure it slings the dreaded burst of noise at me from time to time.
It's like paying for a slapper to beat me up.

    Bee Jay wrote:
Can you record to an external drive, or a different one to the one you are currently using? Same results?
I've just wiped the audio drive and am reinstalling, it may be a fragmenting issue, even though that's a reach.
I've also swapped the FW400 cable to my FF for an 800, I had read this had solved another's 'disk too slow' issue.
I'll be Bach, as Handel once said.
I've had the odd instance of this - menus not initialising and key commands not registering, and other funkiness. Does this always happen (ie, quit Logic, reload it, then load your song - does it always load in this state? Are you sure there isn't a dialog box being displayed, perhaps off screen somewhere?
It's not a constant. For instance yesterday I was working most of the afternoon and it occurred three times. It's happened on other songs too so it's doubtful the song is corrupted. No dialogue boxes, I've been caught out by that a few times so am on the lookout for it now. I can start and stop playback from the numerical keypad (playhead doesn't move, though) but every other key including the spacebar causes the flash of doom. I've yet to see what happens if I leave it and go off for a coffee or something.
It's the cumulative effect - flashing screen of doom, sporadic blasts of noises, disk too slow. I have a simple acoustic guitar part to lay down and so far it's been two days of in the zone, out of the zone, in the zone, etc. I'm sick of the song now, and mightily sick of Logic issues to the point of downloading the Presonus One demo this morning. It's looking pretty tasty...

  • Audio recording with new iPod

Looking at the specs for the "enhanced" fifth-generation iPod, I see no "voice memos" in the "extras" index. Does this mean this new edition of iPod no longer has the ability to record audio with an external mic?
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Is it at all possible to voice record with the new ipod?
Yes, it's possible. The roadblock at the current moment is that no recording accessories have been developed and released yet.
This thread has a lengthy discussion on voice recording:

  • Logic Pro 9- Audio Recording with Rewire?!?!

Id really appreciate if someone could help me out with this
I've been running Rewire through Logic Pro 9 and Reason 4, with Reason being the slave of course, and trying to record audio tracks in Logic from Reason. Does anyone know how to do this??
I know how to setup channel auxillary tracks to hear the midi tracks from Reason, and have tried setting up a bus to channel the output to record to an audio track and it hasn't worked
Can anyone please explain how to get an output on an audio track from a Reason midi track to record it please?

The 32bit bridge has a long history of instability... so your experiences are not unusual.
This is probably one of the major reasons why the bridge and use of 32bit plugins, was finally removed in LPX..... as LPX only supports 64bit AU plugins.
However, you can use something like VEP or 32Lives to run 32bit plugins in LP9 64bit mode.. without the use of the 32bit bridge (and in LPX which doesnt have the bridge) and this does improve stability.
See this user tip for links etc...

  • Resources for audio recording with LE 7.2

Greetings, folks. I'm a recent convert to Macs and to Logic Express, having futzed around with various flavors of Sonar and wanting to take advantage of the many nice features of my Macbook. I've been working through the Logic Pro and Express training manual and I think I'm coming up to speed on using LE OK. My main use for LE, though, is going to be audio recording small acoustic ensembles (and mainly acoustic guitar and vocals), and I could really use a fuller discussion of LE's audio recording and editing features than is found in the training manual. What I'm really looking for, I suppose, are task-oriented explanations of how to do things such as comping tracks, rather than the system-oriented descriptions of what you find in the various LE windows. Any recommendations?
    Thanks,
    Trent

  • Audio recording with QT

Further to my previous post I have tried to record with QT 7
It shows my ADVC device but when I click on record. Says that no data was sent.
I checked that the ADVC which is connected to "output"  of the tape player is well set for 48 Khz audio, and is connected via fire wire to my Mac.
    What could be wrong
    Thanks in advance
    Ivan

    OK, that is really true...
While I was waiting for a reply, I tried what David suggested and used my video Hi8 to simulate a transfer with no sound except the one from my tapes....and guess what ????
    it works !
I am going to try it again with STP and QT7 under same conditions.
Funny that these boxes seem to need a video running.
Even more than that, I have tried an empty tape...and it does not seem to work !
Which means you really need an active signal
thanks a lot for this reply which is very helpful

  • Audio recording with QT Pro vs. QT Broadcaster

Need to record a seminar (audio only) and live webcast parts of it. Audio goes from mixer to line in on Macbook with QT Pro and QT Broadcaster. Broadcaster will record to disk, but it appears to have no metering. It also appears that to record with Broadcaster, you have to be broadcasting. I successfully recorded with QT Pro while broadcasting. Questions:
    1) With QT Pro, how far into the red is safe on recording?
    2) Are there any input metering options (like displaying the peaks for a second or two)?
    3) Can you change the default naming from Audio n.mov to something else?
    4) With QT Broadcaster, is there any level indication - how can you tell if your level is good?
    5) It seems simplest to record with QT Pro and just turn on Broadcaster when needed. QT Pro won't let you pause a recording and resume with the same file, but I can live with that. But is there a better way to do this?
    Thanks,
    John

I am going to try it again with STP and QT7 under same conditions.
Funny that these boxes seem to need a video running.
Even more than that, I have tried an empty tape...and it does not seem to work !
Which means you really need an active signal
thanks a lot for this reply which is very helpful
