The FREE & OPEN SOURCE Mac OS...

UNIX is unanimously recognized as the best operating system. Today, all UNIX are free and open source, with the exception of Mac OS... Sun Microsystems is the latest must to have produced free and open source OS, what allows thousands of developers to analyze every line of code and to correct the faults. We obtain in this way an almost "perfect" OS... This method of development proved its superiority with Linux. The Linux kernel contains 5 times fewer errors than all other UNIX... The open source of Mac OS as well as the free distribution would give an ENORMOUS ADVANTAGE onto all others UNIX... Mac OS is compatible with of numerous commercial softs, what is not still the case for Solaris, BSD, Linux, etc... Every administrator as well as the end users will install Mac OS on their computer to take advantage of the UNIX power, and the software compatibility... We obtain the PERFECT platform...! I think that Mac OS can become the BEST OS in the world, so only Apple not keep in the confidentiality their baby... Do not forget that you are the LAST ones not to have opened TOTALLY your OS...!
  Other OS

> UNIX is unanimously recognized as the best operating system
Widely, but not unanimously.
As for the rest of your argument...
Mac OS X is built on top of Darwin. Darwin is Apple's UNIX bed and that is already open source. You can download and build your own Darwin environment as you like:
http://www.opensource.apple.com/darwinsource/
Apple also open source many of the elements of Mac OS X - theunderlying technologies such as Bonjour, Open Directory and more:
http://developer.apple.com/opensource/index.html
What they don't open source is the UI layer - Aqua and its associated parts, but that's a whole different issue, and maybe the reason to own a Mac. If you could download Mac OS X (including the UI) and build your own copy on your commodity hardware then you could say goodbye to Apple's hardware business. People are prepared to pay extra for Apple's superior industrial design, but there are limits.
It's arguable that Apple's hardware is an intrinsic part of the Mac experience. If you take that away then what incentive is there to use a Mac?

  • Free / open source Closed Captioning software?

I'd like to add closed captions to a feature film I produced. I understand the difference between closed captioning (which is embedded in the video and decoded by the TV) and DVD subtitles, and I would like to add real closed captioning.
Is there any free / open source Mac-compatible closed captioning software I can use to add captions to my feature film and create a .cc file for importing into DVD Studio Pro?
I'm more than comfortable with steep learning curves and X11 interfaces. If I have to use a text editor and timecodes, that's fine too. I just need that .cc file to add true closed captioning to my video, and I don't have the dough for commercial CC software.
    Thanks!

my company does offer closed captioning as a service, Kelly is correct when he says the software is very expensive. as far as creating a .scc file with a text editor, i don't believe it is possible but i may be wrong. when opening a .scc or .cc file in a text editor, it does look like a bunch of "gobbledygook". but the .cap file that is used to create the .scc or .cc file looks a bit more manageable and could possibly be created without captioning software, again i may be wrong and have never attempted to do it. but say you could do it, you could save a bunch of money by creating the .cap file and giving it to someone who has the software to convert it to .scc or .cc. if that seems overwhelming and want to job it out, you could save some money by transcribing the video yourself which is a significant part of the cost when outsourcing. here is a sample of what a .cap file looks like:

  • Free/open source plotting software

    The objective:
Data processing, mostly one X and one Y axis, recorded from sensors.
Formatting, to change how the chart looks, e.g. fonts of the axis label, weight and dashed lines of the plot, addition of lines or arrows.
    What's been found:
    Gnumeric and google spreadsheet.
There is a wonder what the Free/open source software users among the research people are using. I ran into LaTeX and thinks it's a good software. Anything like this would be nice.
    Thanks.

Fine. I found QtiPlot working really well on Linux systems with ease of availability free of charge. No flame setting (as I think Mac OS and linux are both Unix-like), but it's a bit hard to compile on Mac OS X.

  • Is mysql a free open source database or do you need a license for it in prd

is mysql a free open source database or do you need a license for it in production.

    Hi,
It should be free under GPL (General Public license).Usually it will comes with your operating system distribution (eg:RHEL)
If you download it from Oracle site, it should have the commercial license tied to it, and you need to pay for that if it is in use for production.

    Hello guys
I'm ttrying to develop a system that anables communication between the cell phone and the web server via sms (sms platform). Don't you guys know of any free open-source WIG gateway that is readily available for downloads?
Also, is there anyone here who has developed this type of system? how did you do it? any advices or suggestion.?
thank you to tou all of you in advance.

I am not an expert, however, I have noticed very similar issues with the 2Wire equipment. I visit a local coffee shop daily and was perplexed why my MacBook Pro was successfully connected with a strong signal but would have a self-addressed IP address for up to 10-min. Other times, the whole network would go down when a new computer would connect, usually mine.
After reviewing the topic, once again, I am coming to the belief that it is just the 2Wire Gateway that is at the center of these issues. My suggestion is to get a separate modem and wireless router. I am also with AT&T at my home and I use their Motorola SpeedStream modem and a Netgear Router. I cant say that I never have issues, however, at most, I get some easy to resolve problem come up once a month or so.
    Best of luck to you...

  • Ll / seeking FREE open source JSP / JSF Web application Tomcat/5.5.15

    hi all,
We have a need to set-up a web site for a community based (non profit organisation) football / soccer) club.
The web hosting machine is based on JSP / JSF running on Apache Tomcat/5.5.15 & Sun Microsystems Inc. VM 1.5.0_06-b05.
    OS is Windows 2003 V 5.2
The database backend is based on MySQL, mysql-essential-5.0.18-win32.
We need to add content related to:
    a) Players contact details;
    b) Teams;
    c) Match reports;
    d) News;
    ... and other dynamic content
We are looking for an out-of-the box FREE open source Web application we can deploy on the web hosting machine.
    Any suggestions will be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Trajano

I haven't tried ICEFaces or JBoss seam or Apache MyFaces, so I can't really compare them.
ICEFaces appears to be a nice framework/tool from looking at their site, even though it's open source I think one has to pay for support, you might want to take that into consideration while making your decision.
Apache MyFaces, is fully community driven - so you get free support from the community.
I don't know about JBoss seam.

  • What's the Best Open Source DB for use with Kodo?

    Hi everyone,
In terms of ease of setup and use, tools to view info in the database, and least difficulty in
running with Kodo, what is the best open source database to use? I'm use to using Oracle and
SQLPlus. I need to use an open source DB for a learning environment, and I'd like your informed
    opinion.
    Thanks,
    David Ezzio

I have been using postgresql 7.1 with Kodo for a while with mostly positive results, and currently
have it deployed with Kodo 2.2.3. I prefer it to mysql because its feature set is a little richer,
and supports transactions natively. My experience with mysql (without jdo - I haven't tried it with)
is good, but there were little things missing in mysql 3.x, e.g. the ability do do a join in a
    DELETE statement.
BTW, there are some severe problems somewhere in the 2.2.4 release with postgresql if you intend to
eventually deploy on it. It also apparently has some problems invoking postgresql's indices, making
it a little less than optimal. But as a learning environment, it's what I'd recommend.

Here is the rundown of the databases I have experience with:
MySQL: Fairly simple to install (especially if you run Debian Linux), but
configuration, especially adding users, can be a pain. A separate open
source project called "mysql-navigator" makes it fairly easy to do
simple queries, inserts, etc. In most of my tests it outperforms
PostgreSQL, but your mileage will vary. It has a sane CLI that supports
modern features like line history, etc (unlike the horrific SQLPlus).
PostgreSQL: People often say that it is a more "academically
correct" database than MySQL. I've also found it to be quite a bit
easier to set up. Their GUI (called "pgaccess") is simplistic, but does
most things you need. Has a CLI similiar to MySQL's.
HypersonicSQL: By far the easiest to set up (just drop the jar in your
CLASSPATH), but is java only, can be rather slow, and has no GUI tools
available that I know of (except various free vanilla-JDBC GUI tools).
We feel that Kodo works quite well with all these DBs. The MySQL JDBC
driver seems a bit less buggy than Postgres', but their transaction
support is very recent and not very well tested. If I had to pick one or
the other, I would probably go with MySQL.

    JLundan,
I want to thank you for responding to the thread I started on the forum at java.sun.com. Your solution to my problem of needing to print the code of the html pages that the file I included generates was just what I was looking for. However, I have some further questions to ask, if you don't mind. To clarify my task I should say that your rephrasing of the problem is accurate: "You wan't to display the contents of the HTML file that the web server produces in response of client's request?"
Yes, this is what I need to do, but also it needs to display the source code of that html file that the server produces in response to the client's request. Also, in this case, I am the client requesting that the server return some html file, and I'm not sure where the server is. But the webserver.java file that I shared on the forum is on my local machine. I was wondering if I could modify this webserver.java file at my home so that any html file the server returns to me would automatically display the source code. This is a school project of mine and I am stuck on this one thing here.
Further, where would I put the "foo.html" file so it can be written to?
    FileOuputStream fos = new FileOutputStream("foo.html");
    fos.write(bytes);
    fos.close();
Thanks so much for your help. I look forward to your response, at your convenience.

  • Do you want to contribute to the Flex open source project?

We'd like to gauge community interest in contributing to the Flex open source project. Please take this 15 minute survey and be thorough in describing what your particular interests are. Please provide your contact information so that in the future we can reach out to you and keep you informed about our open source developments. We look forward to hearing from you!

    Hi daslicht,
im also very interrested to know the answer.
But im afraid they wont because it uses code from other proprietary tools.
And even if the community get flash catalyst source code, it will be useless (in a sens) mainly because the synergy with other Adobe Tools will not be maintained. And for me it was the main power of Flash Catalyst.
And knowing that, i think it is more easy for Apache community to create a new tool from scratch not linked to Adobe's tooling chain.
It could be a Flex app!!
For you information, the design view from Flash Builder has also been discontinued by Adobe. But in that case its a flex app incorporated in Flash Builder so theres good chances that Adobe will donate it to Apache community.
So why not use the design view as a base for a Flash Catalyst like tool? by making it a standalone tool or designers.

  • Problems getting my open source mac Bosto tablet driver to work

    Hi,
I own an excellent Bosto 19mb tablet, which is a cintiq clone (but much cheaper) which alas only works for pc. You can see it here: http://bosto-tablet.com/
However, I'm a good mac/iOS developer so I've written an open source driver for it. Source is here: https://github.com/georgeappwizards/BostoTabletDriverMac
It works really swetly with all but 2 applications:
    Corel painter 12 and
    Photoshop Cs5.1
I'm downloading a trial of CS6 as I write this but I imagine it will have the same problem.
I have the bosto tablet monitor and my wacom tablet both plugged into my system (driver conflicts don't exist on mac). I also pretty well understand all the HID events etc, needed to make the driver work.
I'm generating identical events to my wacom tablet, which is why I can't for the life of me figure out why i have problems with photoshop.
    The problems are as follows:
    Photoshop CS5.1
Holding the pen down and drawing does not draw a line, it will draw a dot, or a straight line from the point where the pen touched the tablet, to an approximation (looks like a mean) of the end point,
In photoshop, in the brush dynamic settings, I get the "pressure not supported" icon.
When my wacom pen generates an "enter" proximity event [that is, when I put it near the wacom tablet], the triangle dissapears,
When my bosto pen (for which I'm writing the driver) enters [that is, when I put it near the bosto screen], the triangle appears again.
    These are my questions:
How on earth does wacom get photoshop to treat it as a pressure sensitive device?
Is photoshop listening to different events, or are there undocumented transactions going on which allow the wacom tablet to work, but cause my one to draw dots or straight lines?
Where can i go to for support on this issue? I'm an indie developer doing this as open source out totally for free to help others in the community use this wonderful monitor/tablet on their macs.
Does anyone here have any advice?
    Thanks,
    George

    Ok,
Thanks Chris, just knowing that photoshop isn't doing anything special is a great help; but do you know what kind of events it listens to? There are two types of event systems in cocoa. I'm using IOSHidEvents, and as far as I can tell from extensive debugging ALL of my NSEvents for enter, exit, mouse down, move, etc are IDENTICAL to the Wacom tablet's events (except for vendorId and other hardware specific ids).
I debugged them laboriously using wacom sample applications, which they make available to their developers.
So I will contact apple too; but seeing as that is lengthy and expensive (it will use one of my support calls to do), it'd be a tremendous help to be sure that you guys are not doing anything funky outside of listening to NSEvents for:
    Proximity,
    Mouse Down,
    Mouse Up,
    Mouse Move.
Seeing as certain versions of wacoms drivers and many other vendors drivers exhibt the same error I have described here (internet is littered with wacom and other tablet owners complaining about exactly the same issues); I'd imagine that the subject of my oversight must be familiar to someone in the photoshop engineering team, or in some driver engineering team somewhere. If you can't afford me any more information, do you think you can suggest other channels I might pursue to resolve this?
    Thanks for all your help,

I am new to this, if someone have used any free simulator with opensparc work then please let me know about which simulator you used and the advantages of it.

  • What happened to the Apple open source software page?

I have used a lot of the open source software that Apple listed on their website. The address used to be:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/unix_open_source/
But that just directs to a cheesy downloads page with links to app store, etc.
Does anybody know what happend to this part of the Apple web site? Is it just moved and I'm too dumb to find it? I've tried to search these forums, and the googles, but nothing coherant comes through!

This is the developer page though, and doesn't contain the wealth of applications that were hosted (and kept up to date). These included GIMP, carbon emacs, etc.
I realize many of these are available from macports, or even by building from the source in many cases, but some of these programs seem to have been only hosted and updated from this page.

  • A new, free, open source as3 development tool

    Hi All,
I have been a Java developer for years and came to know ActionScript this year. Can't afford the flex builder, and since I am familiar with eclipse, I can not get used to the free FlashDevelop. So I build a new eclipse plugin to work with ActionScript 3, it takes use of the Adobe Flex SDK 3, has the basic functionalities to do edit, compile, and debug. Code assistant is provided, but not well done yet. If you are interested in this tool, please check it out at http://as3ide.sourceforge.net
No doubt this tool is bugy now, but I don't have enough time to work on it, and even more, I don't know if such a tool is useful to others. So I publish it here today, if I could get some possitive responses from others, I may put some more time working on it.
Hope you will like it and welcome feedbacks or comments.
