The from line in Mail is missing

I used to be able to set the From line in Mail to which ever alias I was using. But the From line suddenly disappeared and it's not listed in the little box where you can select which header lines you want. And long before it disappeared it would sometimes give me a choice of only two aliases and sometimes it would include all of them in the drop down list. How can I get the From line back, and when I do, do you know why the drop down box with my aliases is sometimes there and sometimes not?

Hey carolagate,
So I understand that you have multiple email accounts set up in Mail and you wish to be able to choose which account to send a message from, specifically by choosing an account from the “From” field when composing an email. Since this field is not automatically showing itself, you may want to make sure that the email account from which you cannot send messages is set up properly and that it is active in Mail:
Mail (Yosemite): Set up Mail with your email accounts
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19132
You may even need to remove the account and re-add it to see if that affects the behavior. Thanks for being a part of the Apple Support Communities!

Braden

  • In Mail, the "From" line shows the wrong name associated with the email id. How do I update it?

In Mail, the "From" line shows the wrong name associated with my email ID. I've looked over preferences and account information but have not found where I can update it.

There isn't an email address associated with the contact name who appears as the "from" in Mail. It used to be a shared email address and I already had updated the contact to list only the phone number in case that was causing the problem.

    Hello, gypsyro.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I would check to make sure the default account in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars is set to your personal Gmail account.  Test send another message after making the change.

you can't really, but you might be able to filter them by message content into folders for each, or color them with tags

  • When sending an email my From: box says "undisclosed recipient" rather than my actual name...want my name to appear in the From: line

When I compose and send an email my name and email address show on the screen. But when it is sent the "From:" changes to "undisclosed recipients". I have a screen print of what I am talking about...but don't see on this screen how to send it to you.
Hopefully you can give advice to a new user of Thunderbird.
    Margaret

Woops...found the problem. My address book had the name "undisclosed recipients" next to my email address. I edited that name to say "Margaret Parsons" and presto my name appears in the "From" line on my sent emails. Yeaa....problem solved, given enough time and poking around Thunderbird...sure love this email.

  • Can's see who is in the CC line in Mail

Just recently I can now longer see who is in the CC line of incoming mail unless I scroll over the field. This is when an individual message is open. I can't seem to find anything in view or preferences that changes this.  Any hints?

Uploading from where and how are you adding them to PS?

  • How/can I change the "from" address in Mail?

I just upgraded to Mountain Lion, and have come across a problem.
I use iCloud for my mail account, but I want to change the "from" address - so the return address on my messages is NOT icloud.
I could do this in Lion.
In the mail account settings, there's an option that says "alias" and it lists (me)@mac.com, (me)@me.com and (me)@icloud.com, and then "custom" is an option.
    Great!
So I choose Custom, and then I can type in the "from" address that I want.
However, when I go to save those changes, it tells me the SMTP server can't be left blank.
    What?
It's not blank! I didn't touch it. The icloud server is still there!
Furthermore, it's greyed out, so even if it WERE blank, it's not like I can edit it!
Once this happens, the only fix is to delete the whole account from mail, and to disable mail in the icloud control panel, then re-add it.
Has anyone figured out to work around this?

Apple's outgoing mail server - just like 99.9% of all other SMTP servers, does not allow "relaying", meaning you use a domain in the 'sent from' address that is different from a domain hosted by the server. The simple reason is to make it harder for any spammer - not assuming you are one - to abuse the server. While bandwidth, server capacity and server load are some issues, the main fear for ISPs is to get blacklisted, and consequently mails from such server being refused by all others.
It's a general rule, and while exceptions might be technically possible, it would be a manual act which at a certain rate would become unmanageable.
If you want, read about the antonym, open mail relay servers, here.
You see, it's actually good behavior and absolutely in your interest to prevent you from using a "non-in-house" 'sent from' address.

  • How do you set the from field in mail to be one of two addresses?

I have two email addresses.  How do I set up mail so I select which of the addresses goes in the from field?

The From field should include a drop down menu from which you chose the address you want to ue for that message.

  • How do you set the From field in Mail?

Is there any way to set the From field in messages. I have two email addresses:
an .edu address at an university
    a .net at my ISP
I’d like the From field to be my .edu addreess. Mail sent to my .edu address is forwarded to an address of my choosing, which happens to be my .net address. I would, however, like to keep my .net relatively hidden so I can change ISPs. We did that year switching from cable to DSL.
I tried changing Mail Preferences->Accunts->Email Address
to my .edu address. That, however, did not work. My DSL provider ignored the Email Address field and inserted my .net address in the from field. (I believe this method worked when I had a cable ISP.)

Since my last post, I found tried putting
Preferences->Accounts->Email address to be my edu address
would add my .edu address as one of my from choices
Next, I sent myself a mail message, with following result:
The .edu address is now rejected by the outgoing server with the message:
Cannot send message using the server
The sender address (my .edu address) was rejected by the server
I had this working at some time, but not now. Help, please.

  • Can't use the alphabetic search function in the From colum in mail

    Hello,
if I am in mail and want to find a message from my friend in the 'From" colum I would first select 'From' so all names are ordered in alphabet. Then when I click in this comlum with the first letter of the name I am looking for, the result will be a titel in the 'Subject' colum. I have no idea how this has happened and how to change it. This is not a big issue, but I would be slightly happier is ot would work. Can anybody give me a suggestion as what it could be?
