The Future of Aperture

Does anyone know what the future of aperture is? Should I wait until the dust clears and version 2.0 is available? Suggestions?
Thanks!
Rick

It really depends what you want help with. If I never use Bridge again it will be too soon. Not everybody agrees.
But for me, working directly on RAW D200 images without going through ACR is a joy. I am absolutely getting benefit from Aperture now, and frankly have been since 1.0 although (only with D100 and scanned negs).
There are so many items that are useful. The direct access to Photoshop CS2 is exactly what I need for compositing and heavy editing. But let me tell you, I need to externally edit - less, and less.
You need to play with it at an Apple store, and imagine how you would use it. For many, Aperture is very valuable time saver despite some feature issues.
I is very, very subjective.
My two cents.

  • Best possible setup for the future

I am going to ask a generalized broad question. First some background, then I would appreciate your input.
Used mac desktops up until now. Primarily storage reasons. I am sending my daughter off to college this fall and decided to get our first laptop, nice zippy macpro 15". I have to say I'm very happy stealing this laptop from my daughter. I thought I would not want to do so much picture processing on such a limited screen, as I'm used to two landscape monitors.
The database for Aperture right now is almost 400 gigs. I used managed files. I initially thought about upgrading my old desktops to a new super powerful desktop in the next year of so, as I'm still using powermac PCs.
I wasn't going to consider a laptop as a serious contender for primarily the storage issue.
    Enter thunderbolt.
Now I'm scratching my head and wondering about the potential to utilize this seemingly potential I/O as a game changer to the deal.
#1 - I'm not in a hurry. Time is on my side.
#2 - in the past, desktop Vs laptop was a no brainer to me. That gap has narrow now. The primary issue was screen space and storage, mostly storage/speed really.
#3 - speed gap from laptop to desktop is nominal at best from what I can tell, am I correct in seeing this now as not as clear an advantage of a desktop?
#4 - if I'm understanding thunderbolt right (and since time is on my side), I could potentially have a laptop with some lug around peripherals that would nearly make this like a desktop on the go. Sit down and plug into multiple monitors in a flash with RAID extensions, who knows what. Maybe then grab a raid cube and run with it to a place and essentially take my "desktop" environment with me. Am I thinking straight here or being a bit to idealistic? Seems like that it where Apple/intel is headed with this
#5 - managed Vs referenced. I've read a little about this debate and approach. I've only gone with managed and probably will do so, but in light of what I've said above, any comments?
#6 - backup. Always the biggie for me. backup. I love redundancy. I have time machine this and that thrown around in duplicity, copy over mirror drives here and there, and even put an extra drive or two in a neighbor's closet x2 a year just as an offsite backup in case of catastrophic loss like fire/theft. I'm not crazy over such a fragmented multiple approach, but haven't found what I consider a good alternative just yet to something simple, straightforward, and trustworthy. I'm hoping thunderbolt might lend a whole new ability to move quicker through backup scenarios. Thoughts? What are your approaches when you have a life's work of digital pics and videos and just can't stand the thought of ever ever losing them?
#7 - I would love to have an offsite online backup option for everything, seems that would solve so much of my backup stuff. But as a home user that is seriously into digital whatever, I haven't seem to run across something good as I've been limited to slow upload speeds. Until now. Enter FiOs. I can now(supposedly) do 32 up and down on the Fios, the fastest I think I will be able to get without going to a major business type connection. Does anyone have any knowledge of anything that would be a solid online backup option for 2TB or more of data on a revolving basis? I want to overshoot a bit as I seem to be picking up memory usage quickly with shooting in all RAW now and using higher density HD video. Opinions?
Having said all that, I hope what is coming across is that I'm looking at basically going from a guy who had an old powermac and found he is good at video, photos, and all things fun like that. Expanding into business sides of it slowly, seeming to have good luck, sending a daughter off to college introduced a surprising element to me of a powerful laptop, and now I'm grappling with onsite and offisite storage. Future expansion. thunderbolt potential.
I would appreciate some of you who have much more seasoned interactions with higher end equipment and can appreciate some of the details, if you could give some insight into what might work, might not, how to posture myself the best for future expansion and capabilities, etc. I'm not too worried about price. Obviously I'm a home user, so I don't have a corporate account. But dropping 10 - 20 grand in the next 2 or so years wouldn't be unreasonable if it were to posture me for the best potential use for many years.
    Thanks,
    Robert

#3: At the moment (until MPs are upgraded) the top new MBPs are stronger Aperture boxes than many Mac Pros are. IMO the first true desktop replacement (DTR) laptops. Stick to the stronger graphics options and I very, very strongly recommend the anti-glare display choice.
#5: Managed files are IMO not the way to go for many reasons, and certainly not on a laptop. I recommend using a Referenced-Masters-Library on the internal drive with Preview size set to be the size of your laptop display. Have two large external drives: one for Masters and Vaults and one for offsite backup of the other external.
So #6: Backup is easy, just add more off site drives for more redundancy and change them out frequently (at least weekly or every significant project). For images work mirrors tend to be a waste of drive space. Far more worthy is more frequent real offsite backup. Note that simple changeout of a 2-TB drive to the trunk of the car provides real backup against fire, theft and drive failure.
Originals should be backed up before import into Aperture or any other app anyway. A Managed-Masters-Library not only gets itself ridiculously large, having Masters in Vaults just makes Vaults huge and Vault backups slower, and therefore less likely to be done as frequently.
#4: Yes. Tbt may have some growing pains but I think your insight is accurate. However even without Thunderbolt using a Referenced-Masters-Library with Masters accessed over FW800 i/o is ok. Key is that the Library lives on an internal drive that is kept underfilled, which is easy once you use a Referenced-Masters-Library with Masters on external drives.
Personally I just ordered a 17" 2011 MBP with SSD and am replacing the optical drive with a 750 GB 7200 rpm OWC drive. The Referenced-Masters-Library will live on the SSD while Masters will initially live on the OWC drive then later get relocated to external archive drives.
#1 - I'm not in a hurry. Time is on my side.
Since you are using a Powermac now, I respectfully disagree. Life is short: get thee to a Sandy Bridge MBP asap This new MBP is literally what mobile Aperture users like me have been waiting for since v1.

  • Photo Organization and the Future

Here's my concern - utilizing aperture to organize my projects and albums, departing from managing the file structure (which is getting impossible to keep up with) I have to assume that Apple and Aperture will always be around.
What if in the future I want to switch to Light Room, or go back to windows? I have nearly 35,000 photo's now, and I imagine I'll have more in 50 years but I have no idea if Aperture will still be around in 50 years and If I stop paying attention to my file structure, I'll lose all the organization behind my masters.
Aren't any of you concerned about the distant future? Apple could pull the plug on Aperture; somebody else could come out with somethign better; etc.

No, I'm not concerned about my file structure. The fact that Aperture takes care of that for Managed libraries doesn't mean that there is no structure. The library normally resides in the Pictures folder. If you open the package you will find the folder for all your masters - the structure there can be easily decoded. There are lots of other files used by Aperture when manipulating or displaying images. If you need to get your original photo images at some time they are there. If you shoot in RAW then you might need to worry about some future time when no one supports your camera's version of RAW, but that's a different issue. You can also, in the distant future, export your edited photos to a new location.
If you have a Referenced library then you are responsible for the storage, backup and structure of those images.

  • Ordered prints. Several were cut off at edges or were printed off center. How do I prevent this in the future?

Ordered prints from my Mac library to Apple. Several came back cut off or printed off-center. How do I prevent this in the future?

How do I prevent this in the future?
Before ordering any print product proof it by creating a PDF file of it according to this Apple document:    iPhoto, Aperture: Previewing an order in iPhoto or Aperture.  Save the PDF file to compare with the printed copy when it arrives.
For this book contact Apple via the 800-275-2273 phone number. Apple has been very good a correcting problems.  They gave me a refund so I could order again.

  • Bug? My events on the iPad iCal app aren't shown in the year view if they are more than two years in the future.

My events on the iPad iCal app aren't shown in the year view if they are more than two years in the future even though I can see them on the month, week and day view. Any suggestions on how to fix it? I've tried it all. I called the apple support and they checked on their iPads. They all did the same and they couldn't help me. They suggested trying this way. I'd like to be able to plan a few years ahead and the year view would make thing so easy!
    Is this a bug?

Go to the Home screen and double click the Home button. That will reveal the row of recently used apps at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold on the app in question until it wiggles and displays a minus sign. Tap the minus sign to actually quit the app. Then tap anywhere on the screen above that bottom row to return the screen to normal. Then restart the app and see if it works normally.
Then reboot your iPad. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the iPad restart. See if that fixes your problem.

  • When iTunes upgraded, many of my song tags were changed by iTunes.  This happened again when an update was sent this week.  Is there any way to avoid this happening again in the future?

When I downloaded the new iTunes, it changed the tags on some of my tracks.  As a result, I had to fix them manually.  When I downloaded another upgrade this week, my tags changed again.  How can I prevent this from happening in the future?

The cricual thing is to have a complete backup of your library that you could restore if needed.
What changes are you noticing? There appear to be some new as yet not well documented features designed to sync data across multiple libraries/devices which may have unwanted side effects.

  • How to Send an Email at a Specific Time in the Future Using Mozilla Thunderbird.

    Hi guys,
I downloaded Thunderbird for my Mac for one single purpose, simpy to be able to send an email by executing the time and date i wish my email to be send, automatically. The extension saves the message to draft and monitors the messages in the draft folder, when the chosen time arrives it moves the message to unsent and sends unsent messages. So i can send messages in the future.
I dont know how to manage this, and i would appreciate help and tutorials from you guys!

Why not read Thunderbirds tutorials and post in their forum area?

  • The Future Of The N900?

    Hello,
It was hard enough for me to fathom out what was going on in favor of the N900 before I heard about the Microsoft announcement.
It seems Nokia have got bigger concerns for the future of themselves than to be concerned about a past  product?
As a layman it seems the N900 is good phone but will be ultimately be limited by it's processor. I assume like computers this will increase unless there are limitations.
BUT, it does seem that all these names I've heard of since owning a N900 - Maemo, Meego, Moblin, Intel, Qt, Ovi Beta do not  represent a part of the future in the grand scheme of things for Nokia. I can understand that if Microsoft is necessary for survival.
I have no experience of Ipod / HTC Andriod but it does seem these have stolen the march whilst Nokia have been floundering. I really don't know if I move away from the Nokia N900 if I would be pleasantly surprised or wish for it back.
In the meantime if the N900 has a future interesting or otherwise it would be good to know as upgrade is round the corner and unless the competition are not to be missed, I am happy to stick with the N900 as it does the business for me.
The thing is I shouldn't need to be thinking like this but it is not obvious to me where the Nokia successor to it is.
I am very open to responses to my thoughts, which may need correcting. I might not even be on the right track, but it's funny how I am the only person in my group of friends with a Nokia, never mind a N900.
I would also like to mention that cpitchford has helped me in the past and I consider him to be the man in the know by far. I was gutted to read a recent post how he felt let down.
I favor quality brand loyalty but this seems to questionable these days.

    hi,
    i do agree with you!!
even after losing my 1st nokia n900, i cud not digest any other phone as similar and doing-business for me.
hence to asnwer all easy options i bought again my 2nd n900.
Certainly there is no match to its convinence, leave apart its processor.
I am also amongst those who r eagerly waiting for new version, but the possibility seems to b diminishing .
hope nokia will revive this exclusive-not-for masses-smartphone!!!

  • How do I delete photos from my daughter's ipod that showed up on there when she got music from her aunt's itunes? Also how do I make sure none of my iphone pics show up on her ipod in the future (we use the same itunes account and I think same icloud).

I'm totally new to iphone/ipod.  I need help with the following:
    1) How do I get rid of a folder of photos that showed up on my daughter's ipod touch when she received some songs from her aunt's itunes?  After she got some songs from that itunes a folder of pictures showed up with no delete option.  Does she need to reconnect to that itunes/computer and if so what do we need to do to remove this folder of pics from her ipod?
    2) Also, my daughter uses same itunes as myself, how do I make sure any pics I have on my iphone & icloud (itunes) don't show up on her ipod? I shut off my photostream so perhaps this is the solution.  But I noticed that a message I sent from her ipod to my sister (an iphone user) later showed up on my iphone (as if I had sent it from my iphone)! That was really odd. I'd like to keep our itunes account together simply so I can monitor her downloads, etc so I don't want to open up her own itunes to avoid automatic syncing.
I only want to share music between our devices.  I don't want her pics nor my pics to go to icloud/itunes.
    Thank you!

    1) You asked "Does she need to reconnect to that itunes/computer and if so what do we need to do to remove this folder of pics from her ipod?" Yes, you have to connect the iPod to that computer and go to the Photos pane for the iPod in iTunes and uncheck sync photos and the click on synce/apply. In the future do not check sync photos.
iOS and iPod: Syncing photos using iTunes
    2)
Create a NEW account for using these instructions. Make sure you follow the instructions. Many do not and if you do not you will not get the None option. You must use an email address that you have not used with Apple before.
Creating an iTunes Store, App Store, iBookstore, and Mac App Store account without a credit card
Then on the iPod go to
    - Settings>Messages>Send and receive and sign out your ID and sign into hers. Make sure that only her ID email address is listed.
    - Settings>FaceTime sign out of your ID and sign into hers. Make sure that under You can be reached at only her ID email address is listed
    - Settings>iCloud and sign out and sign in with hers
Contnue to use the commpn ID/account for Settings>iTunes and App stores.

  • Can you keep extra songs on your iPod that are not in your iTunes library, and not lose these songs every time you want to delete something from your iPod in the future?

I have all these songs that I want to store on my iPod but not on my computer, and I know that by choosing to manually manage my music I can still hang on to these songs when I add new songs to my iPod.  However, what if I want to delete songs off of my iPod in the future?  Will I lose all of the extra music that is on my iPod but not my computer, due to the fact that the only way to delete songs seems to be by syncing?

The answer to the question in the title of the thread is yes, but it is not necessarily a good idea. At some point you are likely to find you need to restore your iPod for one reason or another, or it could be lost, stolen or damaged. If your songs aren't on your computer, and backed up too, then you will be less than happy.

  • The future of Snapshot, and similar tools.

My apologies for posting this twice. I posted it first as a follow up
to an old thread in ...
    novell.support.zenworks.desktop-management.6x.install-setup
I am quoting some comments made in that forum.
Then after surfing the forums for awhile, I thought the issue might get
more attention, if I posted it here. I am looking for ideas and advice
on the future of snap shot, and any tools that Novell might provide to
    replace it.
If I could address some of these comments, in hopes of better
    understanding ...
    RE: >>>

Admin Studio is not cheap. After a client has spend thousands of
dollars to implement ZENWorks, now I have to tell them to drop another
couple thousand down for an application packager. I also don't fully
understand Novell's relationship with the product, they don't seem to be
partnering well together, I'd appreciate anyone else's read on this
    relationship.
    RE: >>
    > Novell has for over 5 years now been trying to steer people from

I've heard that statement made verbally by many engineers, but I don't
always see the practice following that.
Has Novell ever gone on record to state they will no longer support snap
    shot???
RE: >> > If your snapshots are failing with the latest versions of
    snapshot, then

Maybe I've just gotten lucky? I've have not had many issues with using
snapshot, and I have been involved in a wide variety of applications.
I have seen the statement made on the forum that ZEN Works is not really
a "Packaging" suite. While that may be a true statement, because
Snapshot has been packaged with the product for so long, the mind set of
customers is that it is expected to work, and be supported.
I look forward to additional comments on this matter.

    Tom,
I'm not sure what exactly are you searching for? ZdM is already providing
you with snapshot replacement - AdminStudio ZfD edition, included in ZfD
    price.
AdminStudio part for preparing snapshot MSI is identical in ZfD and
    Professional edition.
All comments you qouted (including this one) are personal opinions - I
suggest you to try AdminStudio ZfD edition and make your own.

    Dear all,

    Hi Marcos,
When you have created the Restricted keyfigures for Open Items, You have to add the date characteristic on which you are looking open item and add the variable there. Here you have to use a variable of type Interval and select the operator "<" the date of the Variable. If you go through, there are standard variable for keydate, which you can use directly.
    Hope you got the idea

  • New Features it would be cool to see implemented in the future

I really love itunes, but have some ideas of things that could be improved upon in the future:
Firstly this in an issue about something that used to work better than it does now: it used to be that if you had a smart playlist set to live update on your ipod it would update on the ipod itself, not just itunes. here's an example: if the list was set to only have songs with a playcount less than one (ie, unplayed songs) then if those songs were played and the playlist was exited from and reentered, those songs would then no longer appear in the playlist. This was a feature I used with regularity, but now cannot due to updates to my ipod's os.
Secondly, it would be great if more logic were added to the smartlist functionality. As of now, you can either have a list follow all or any of the options. it would be great to have logic more along the lines of: this and this or this or that. that way some very interesting and specific lists could be created.
also, it would be cool if the blue dot that appears next to a podcast if it is new would last until that podcasts has been played through in full (ie playcount=1) instead of just in part.
another useful addition would be the choice to designate a playlist as video only, audio only or any. that way videos wouldn't pop up in audio lists.
finally it would be great to have an option to say if the ipod it being charged, then the backlight would automatically turn on and stay on (timer turned off).

To import music into your iTunes library on the computer go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Add items to iTunes and follow the instructions
Delete the "songs" that do not play in your iTunes library and reimport them.
