The future of Java 3d

Hello all.
I thought about learning some Java 3D stuff and was browsing around and I've got a couple of questions:
- What exactly is JOPL?
- Is Sun activly pushing Java 3d?
- Is Java 3d a required skill in today's market?
I just don't want to invest time in learning a technology which may in the near future (hopefully not) become unused/obsolete.
Would like to hear your opinions

I'm not sure about JOPL; JOGL is a Java-OpenGL interface that enables you to use standard OpenGL to access 3D hardware from Java. There is also an OpenGL interface called LWJGL which is a bit faster but not awt compatible.
Sun isn't actively pushing Java3D but it's recent appearance on the Mac suggests that it isn't entirely dead and there may be some movement with it in future.
Java3D is an essential skill in today's Java3D market. The best way to check for it's use in the wider world is to go onto any of the job sites and do a search for jobs requiring Java3D. I doubt you'll find many. That doesn't mean you shouldn't learn it- if you use it alongside the standard tutorials and Selman's book on the subject that is a great way to learn about 3D programming without having to get into the whole wheel-reinvention that is required to get going with OpenGL. Ultimately if you want a job in 3D programming you are going to be best learning OpenGL from the bottom up because that is what more commercial companies use. If you want to learn about 3D programming principles, try J3D.

  • The future of java and what is the most necessary skill to learn

    hi, friends,
    This is a serious question, so please answer seriously.
    1. The future of java
    Are there any future for java? What I mean are: are there any jobs for java developer in the future? are there any chances for new java company to survive?
    2. What is the most needed skill in so many java technology?
    There are so many sections in java technology. so what is the most needed one for one to find a job? what is the most promising section for one to build a company.
    Thank your very much!

    It's a lousy question really.
    1) There are very few companies you'd call a 'java company'. There are companies that use java, but they also by and large use C++, DBMS systems, and a whole host of other technologies. If java died, they'd switch to whatever technology killed it. Any decent programmer is flexible enough to learn a new language in a matter of weeks. It's the ability to work with the theory behind the code rather than the knowledge of syntax that's important.
    2) It depends entirely on what you're doing. Working with a company where databases are key? Then you need Oracle, or SQL. Working with web technology? Perl, JSP, PHP, stuff like that is what you want. Working in high performance application design? You need C++. Graphics? Take a look at OpenGL or Java3d.
    The most promising section to build a company? If there was a straight answer to that 1000 companies would have sprung up already and filled the niche.
    Basically, if you want a successful career in programming, don't become a java programmer, become a programmer full stop. If you think you'll be working with java when you retire in 40-odd years you're mistaken. You need to grasp the basic concepts of application and algorithm design, and be quick to learn new technologies and evaluate them against what exists already.
    It can take 3 years to go from complete newbie to fluent in a single programming language. It can then take less than 3 days to become fluent in another.

  • The future of Java certifications

    What will be the future of Sun java certifications will
    1.Name changed?
    2. Cost?
    3.Syllabus? etc.....
    will be the same .Please tell me from where i get those to read....
    Thnx....

    http://www.sun.com/training/certification/beta_scjp_plus.xml
    The Sun Java Programmer Plus certification beta will launch on March 1, 2010 and run for approximately 10 days.
    Q: Why should I take the performance exam? I am already certified as a Java Programmer.
    A: The benefit to the Programmer is the ability to update current skills and practically demonstrate those skills in addition to knowledge. The performance exam provides current employers with the confidence that an employee has the problem solving skills they need on a day to day basis, using Java to design and develop applications effectively.
    Q: Will this exam replace the current Java Programmer exam?
    A: Sun believes that performance based Java Programming certification provides both candidates and employers with greater assurance that their skills will meet the needs of the Java Programmer role. Sun will retire the prior versions of the Java Programmer certification in the near future. Sun will provide a public notification of at least 90 days in advance of any exam retirement.

  • Implementation-specific documentation for the Sun/Oracle Java SE ?

    Hi,
    Some places in the Java SE API specification call for platform-specific documentation. For example, the specification of the method await of class java.util.concurrent.locks.Condition says:
    "Implementation Considerations
    The current thread is assumed to hold the lock associated with this Condition when this method is called. It is up to the implementation to determine if this is the case and if not, how to respond. Typically, an exception will be thrown (such as IllegalMonitorStateException) and the implementation must document that fact. "
    So, implementation-specific documentation is expected to exist in addition to the API specification documentation. Sure, sentences beginning with "Typically..." suggest that that is what the Sun/Oracle reference implementation does, so the behavior of Sun/Oracle implementation can be guessed in many cases... yet sometimes troubling uncertainty remains.
    If implementation-specific documentation for the implementation exists, please let me know.
    I apologize if I chose an inappropriate forum for this question, but there seems to be no forum for discussing documentation arrangements.

    If you want to look at the implementation sepcific documentation, the best place to look is the source.
    The reason the docuementation is written generically is because they want you to write portable code, rather than rely on the specific implementation detail of the one you are using.
    Even if you don't intend to use another vendor, you might want to upgrade in the future and Java 7 or 8 many change its implementations provided it meets the specification.

  • Future for Java guys

    I seen some of the articles, sap customer are pressuring to release ABAP version of portal instead of java so that, they no need to worry of multiple skilled persons and also they can avoid communication between java and ABAP. If that at is  the case what would be the future of java guys who migrated to sap. What do you suggest for Java guys who is going to migrate to sap NetWeaver?

    Hi Sreenivasulu,
       You don't have anything to worry about.  You will not see an ABAP version of the portal.  ABAP is great for the business transaction functionality but was not designed to work with the web.  That is why a couple of years ago the SAP CEO at Sapphire said that JAVA was going to be an important development tool for developing SAP application.

  • What is the difference between java direct or java bean in JSP?

    What is the difference if I use java code directly in JSP or use java bean in JSP?
    Which class to use for receiving the passed parameter from html or java script? Any difference for java code and java bean in the way receiving the passed data?
    How can I pass string from jsp to html or java script?

    it's generally accepted as better design to separate presentation from logic. meaning, the java code in the jsp should be used to support displaying data, as oppsoed to implementing the application - like database access, etc.
    when the logic is separated from the presentation, it allows you to reuse logic components within several jsp pages.
    if you decide to change the presentation layer in the future (to support wap, for example) you don't need to rewrite your entire application, since the "guts" of the application is outside of the jsps.
    it is also a good idea to separate your business logic from your data layer. adding a "buffer zone" between these layers helps in the same manner as in separating presentation from logic. if you're using flat files for storage now, upgrading to a database wouldn't require rewriting all your business logic, just the methods which write out the data to a file, for example.
    once you feel comfortable with separating the various layers, check out the struts framework at http://jakarta.apache.org/
    to answer your second question, to get parameters passed in from HTML forms, use ServletRequet's getParameter() method.
    in tomcat:
    <% String lastName = request.getParameter( "lastname" ); %>
    to answer your third question: when displaying the HTML from withing a jsp, print out the string to a javascript variable or a hidden form element:
    <% String firstName = "mike"; %>
    <input type="hidden" name="firstname" value="<%= firstName %>">
    <script language="javascript1.2">
    var firstName = "<%= firstName %>";
    </script>
    this jsp results in the following html:
    <input type="hidden" name="firstname" value="mike">
    <script language="javascript1.2">
    var firstName = "mike";
    </script>

  • Pls help   how to check the condition in java server faces.....???

    Hi All
    I have strucked with code pls help....
    How can i check the codition in java server faces.....?
    like in my Application when user provides the in put like some state name in the next page i have to display some url for that state .......if he provide some other state name it will be different url .....pls help me how can i do that,,,,,,???
    thanks in advance..

    There are certainly ways to do that. E.g. using the rendered attribute, using conditional statements in EL, using a specialized getter for that (lazily loaded if necessary), etcetera. But your functional requirement is unclear, so I can't go in detail with that.
    In the future, please try to write normal English sentences. Don't write like SMS talk and save the periods and commas. The more effort you put in your question, the more chance you will be taken for serious and the more effort others will post in their answers.
    Also, in the future, JSF related questions should be posted in the JSF forum.

  • Getting the current time and comparing it to a time in the future

    Hello,
    I am seeing in my research some debate on the best way to get the time. I am reading that just using the Date class and calling getTime() is not the most reliable way to do things. Overall, I am trying to get the current time down to the millisecond. I then want to add 5 seconds to that time and then store that value. FInally, when the current time is greater or equal to this stored value, I want to continue on in my program. Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to calculate the time variable? Any help would be much appreciated. I am new to the JAVA world.
    Thanks,
    Tim

    To store the current time, simply use new java.util.Date(). Yes, there might be slight inconsistencies and it might not be the most accurate time possible, but without significant additional effort (perhaps a native O/S call or the use of another time library), you will not do much better. Calendar won't help in this instance either. The easiest way to get five seconds in the future is to do the following:
    Date now = new Date();
    Date future = new Date(now.getTime() + 5000);To store and retrieve the value, it depends on what you are doing. You can place it in the database via JDBC (BTW, if you trust the database timestamp more than Java's you can use something like Oracle's SYSDATE instead of Java's date in your SQL query). You can place it in the filesystem. You can store it in the user's session.

  • What is the role of java in the netweaver platform

    Hi All
    sapnetweaver platform is the integration of the java and abap.then what is the role of java in that netweaver platform
    regards
    Sunil

    Hi Sunil,
            Java makes Sap NetWeaver more powerfull than it was before.
           One of the new additions to the Java functionality of NetWeaver includes the Java Virtual Machine container technology. This will allow standard Java code to run on a framework around the Java Virtual Machine itself. It does this by reducing the number of parallel users per virtual machine. It also improves on the overall memory consumption, the application stability and the number of affected users in the event of a screen freeze, loss of data or the need for re-keying of information.
          The JVM technology also includes several added features designed to assist developers in managing error resolutions. This includes the ability for developers to switch a user process in the production system in or out of debugging mode on the fly allowing for minimum downtime. While also including tracing and monitoring tools for error analysis and hopefully a quick resolution.
             So now, not only does NetWeaver offer support for such standards as HTTP, XML, Web services and of course ABAP, but now it also offers support for Java. All of this adds to SAP’s future interoperability with such applications as Microsoft .NET and IBM WebSphere.
             Now that SAP NetWeaver supports Java we will start to see a real positive impact in the marketplace for those who are in search of a cost-effective means to deploy and manage Java applications in their enterprise and small businesses. For companies of all sizes looking for a way to adapt quickly to market changes, respond to unforeseen challenges and to seize new opportunities, SAP NetWeaver is a tool that is worth looking into.

  • How to cover the new in Java 5

    Hi java community :)
    I am a Java programmer since 4 years which means that I worked with 1.3 then with 1.4 and there was no big difference betwen them. But, with Java 1.5 I think I need some articles or tutorials that explain what are the differnces between 1.4 and 1.5....
    I hope that I find some here
    thanks

    I am also making the transition from 1.4 to Java 5.
    Of all the language additions in Java 5, the following 2 are having the most profound effect on the way I think about and use Java
    Generics - I have been waiting for these for ages. Now I can tailor existing classes at compile time that do
    a lot to ensure type safety at compile time without having to actually "roll my own" implementations.
    You should take a good look at Generics, go search on google with "java generics", floods of articles out there.
    Annotations. The language feature that takes the concepts of "marker" interfaces and standard code
    patterns (JavaBean pattern for properties for example) and allows you to place the metadata of your choice in a class.
    While this may not be something that you will want to use, you should get a good grounding in Annotations
    because you will come across them in other peoples code. Helps if you understand what they mean.
    Syntactic sugar: Under this rubric you will find things like autoboxing, enhanced iteration for arrays and collections and varargs.
    While autoboxing is a nice idea, IMHO it is something that you really should not use simply because it is a performance killer, at least in this version of Java.
    Enhanced iteration over arrays and collections. You will love them, enough said.
    Varargs. I am torn about varargs, I fear that varargs are going to be over used and, due to this over use, cause a lot of maintenance issues in the future.
    Saves you having to create arrays, populate them and pass them as a single parameter to a method yourself. Still, because they are a language feature you will need to find out about them.
    New packages in Java 5. IMHO I think the java.util.concurrent package is the most useful and welcome introduction, offering a stunning array of out of the
    box classes that enable you to work in a multi-threaded environment much more easily.
    Threading in Java has always been easy, solving a lot of the problems that Threading introduces into an application has now (almost) reached the same level of simplicity.
    You are still going to need to know what you are doing however you are relieved of the burden of inventing wheels again.
    Management APIs. Running a close second to the concurrency classes, the java.lang.management
    package now enables you to monitor your application and also to detect and react to critical conditions
    (running low on heap for instance) programmatically in a consistent fashion.
    Along with the new tools that Java 5 provides (JConsole is cool), you can now remotely monitor an application and keep track of how the JVM is running.
    Learning to use the management package to your advantage is going to be a must for serious application developers in the future.

  • Burton Group Article -- The Beginning of the End of Java EE

    Has anyone read this?
    Overview:
    Java Platform, Enterprise Edition version 5 (JEE5) was intended to simplify the incredibly complex Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE) but failed to deliver on that promise. The primary value proposition of Java EE?a common programming model for a complete enterprise platform?makes the platform susceptible to disruption by platforms that emphasize ease of development. In this overview, Senior Analyst Richard Monson-Haefel explains how JEE5 fails to save Java EE and why it?s a harbinger of the end of Java EE as the dominant enterprise platform.

    "Burton Group is not advocating that organizations remove and replace all of their Java EE applications overnight. Instead, organizations should continue to manage existing Java EE applications but look to other solutions for future development. Organizations should embrace and accept the face that the Java EE standard is not a safe bet for future development. The platform requires a high price in terms of productivity while delivering functionality that can be duplicated by Microsoft .NET or in part by other easier to develop platforms."

  • The future of APT

    Hi,
    This message is mostly directly to Darcy (head of JSR 269). I was wondering what Sun's plans are for the future after JSR 269? I was very disappointed to find out that Mustang's processor is almost as limited as Tiger's was, allowing the implementation of very simple annotations such as @Override.
    I am looking for the following features:
    1) Ability to inject code (at compile-time) into a method based upon the annotation attached to it (useful for design by contract).
    2) Ability to read the contents of a method body, not just method declaration (this relates to #1).
    3) Access to a mutable AST or a very easy way to copy the read-only AST from one processing phase into another, and modifying its contents slightly in th process (i.e. adding or removing lines).
    Maybe you know some tricks on how to achieve the above without any changes to JSR 269. If so, please let me know.
    Thanks,
    Gili

    Greetings.
    Neither apt nor JSR 269 are designed to primarily to be used for AOP-like purposes so there are no mutable source files or mutable ASTs, etc.
    However, with the current APIs, you can use something like the Decorator pattern from the patterns books to achieve much of the effect you want by having the code being operated upon makes reference to to-be-generated types. For example
    // Initial source code
    public class Starter {
       @write(code="int i = 0")
       public void something() {}
       Starter factory() {
           return new StarterImpl();
    }where the annotation processor generates
    class StarterImpl {
       public StarterImp(){}
       public void something() {
           int i = 0;
    }(Variants of this would include having Starter and StarterImpl implement a common interface and having a factory which returned the interface type; a Starter class object could directly wrap an instance of StarterImpl and delegate the method calls, etc.)
    A second way is to generate the superclass of the Starter type. This technique is used by the rapt project, https://rapt.dev.java.net/, to implement mixins. For example,
    // Initial source code
    @write(name = "something", code="int i = 0")
    public class Child extends Parent{}with generated code
    class Parent {
       public void something() {
          int i = 0;
    } One limitation of these approaches is that the code being processed has to be designed to be processed in this way.
    JSR 269 will not include an AST model. However, Sun's JDK has added a Sun-specific, but supported, com.sun.source API modeling trees.
