The great mini-Linux die-off

Is it just me or have dozens of miniature Linux distros vanished in recent years?
The current crop seem to consist mostly of:
- Rescue CDs (e.g. Parted Magic)
- Single-user Puppy variants
- "Lightweight" spins of major distros (e.g. Lubuntu)
What happened here? Are popular demand and developer need just not as great, given the recent explosion of computing power?

Has to be the same one you're in. Either that or ye have a hell of an internet connection. Guess should say ... was at the time. Things seem to be getting heavier for #!, still like it and esp the folks in the distro's community/forum. When 1st started using that distro, it packed a hell of a punch ( and was ... still is, uber user friendly.) The install I'd 1st setup for it idled at all of 38mbs/ram. For all it offered ... was blown away by it.
Still isn't massive imo anyway, still on the lighter side. Hopefully the new iso is heading back to that. Dun know, either way learned 1/2 enough about all this opensource linuxy goodness by now. Couldn't bare anything out of the box anymore. Long babbling post trying to cut short. ( ya'll were warned) Yeppers compared to a ton of other distro's, #! still fully qualifies as minimal imo. When quite a few of the biggies are using 3-5-600mbs, tons more cpu + diskspace and for all that are less user friendly, less stable than crunchbang by far.
Crunchbang blazed on this ole dinosaur w a massive 2.8ghz 1 core P4 and a mighty 512ddr2. So yeppers a distro that can do that, stand by the opinion ... is minimalistic. Sheesh ... tried to cut it short. Oh well ... shrugs.

  • Mac Mini G4 powers off after 45 secs to 60 secs

Symptoms: When I boot up my G4 Mac mini, about 45 seconds to 60 seconds after the boot up chime, the Mac Mini justs powers off (as if someone just unplugged the power). There is no warning, and it happens in different places (sometimes during the bootup process, sometimes immediately after bootup completes). Another thing I notice is after I turn power on, the power light is solid for about 10 seconds, but after that, it starts pulsating (like in sleep mode, only it's not in sleep mode).
Events that may be related: I started having this problem directly after replacing the internal hard drive. I was grounded, and I didn't see anything get zapped, and there were no electrical incidents. However, it's hard to think that this activity doesn't have something to do with the problem.
Any ideas what this could be? I'm okay with working with the internals of this machine, but I just need a little direction. Apple does not appear to have much tech documents on the subject.
    G4 Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Update: I have determined that this is due to a bad connector on the internal fan. One of the wires in the connector popped out, and when I put it back in, the first time it went in backwards, so when I tried to attach the fan cable, it crimped the end of the wire connector. That means that it doesn't securely fasten to the internal board. I can situate it to the point where it touches for awhile, and during this time, the Mac Mini does boot up with a solid power light, and stays on. However, eventually the wire goes loose, shutting down the fan, which in turn shuts down the Mac Mini.
    Things I've tried:
    - I've searched for a fan replacement on the web, but it cannot be found for purchase (not even on eBay).
    - I went to Frys Electronics, but they don't have the fan nor that connector.
    - I went to the genius bar at the local Apple store, and was informed that Apple nor Apple Authorized businesses are "allowed" to sell me the part. They did confirm that the fan not properly connected would cause the symptoms I'm experiencing.
I guess at this point, I need to do one of the following:
    1. Find an unauthorized Apple repair business would be willing to sell me this part.
    2. Figure out how to fix the connector on the wire so that it securely attaches to the prong.
    3. Pay Apple over $100 to fix what is basically a $5 repair (this option is largely undesireable).
    4. Find someone who is throwing out a broken Mac Mini where I can scavenge for the fan.
Any other suggestions, or any help in accomplishing my goal would still be greatly appreciated.

  • Siri on the iPad mini

I managed to get around 12 minutes worth of siri in the text app before the iPad Mini shut it off. I am getting a message that the iPad is not connected to the server. Must the iPad be connected to a network for siri to work?
    Thanks

    Yes.

  • What's wrong with my trackpad? It was working fine, then I installed Lion 10.8.1 and now the mac mini won't see it, when I press the on button, a light comes on after a brief pause, stays on for a second or so, and then goes off, still no trackpad..

Ok, so if you haven't worked it out, this is my first post. My problem is all in the title, but once more won't hurt..
I have a bluetooth trackpad which has been attached to my mac mini for a few months now, with only the occasional connection lost, connection found saga that everyone seems to go through. Earlier today, I used the trackpad to upgrade to OSX 10.8.1 nd when the computer rebooted, no trackpad could be found. I've put fresh batteries in, I've tried rebooting the mac mini, I've checked sys preferences and am currently using an old usb keyboard which is v flimsy so forgive any typos please.
The light comes on about a second after the on button is pressed, (whether the button is held down or not) and then goes off after a second, still no trackpad is found..
    Why?!!!!

No, not paired to anything else, fresh out the box connected to the mac mini I bought at the same time, never been paired with anything else.
I think it's a hardware issue. As I don't seem to be able to get it to turn off.

  • I am trying to play my digital music off a hard drive onto my home stereo.  I would like to know if the mac mini can just hook to my processor and play music through the processor(preamp) on my home stereo speakers?

I currently have a nice home stereo component system.  I also have a 500 GB external hard drive loaded with music.  I am looking for a way to play the music off this Hard Drive onto my home stereo system.  I currently have a WD home entertainment box that I can play movies that I download off the Internet on my TV, of course piped through my home stereo for the sound.  I would like to know if the mac-mini could be used in this form also.  Just have the HD hooked to it, the TV would become my monitor and the mac mini would play the music ... RANDOMLY ... with the use of iTunes.  This of course would be hooked up to the home system with an hdmi cable and the HD hooked up through a USB connection.
Just would like to know if this could work?

    Yes. Is the short answer.
You can directly connect the speaker out port of the Mac mini to an input on the AV Receiver which then feeds your speakers. This would be an audio only solution. If you use a TOS-Link connection this will be a pure digital connection ensuring the best quality (important for audiophiles).
You can if you wish connect the video from the Mac mini to the AV Receiver, and if you have a Mac mini with HDMI or a Mini Displayport you can run the audio and video via a single cable. (Older models would use two cables, the aforementioned TOS-Link pus a DVI to HDMI cable.)
If you do connect the video output from the Mac to the AV Receiver you can then display this on your TV, and have as one possibility iTunes displayed with perhaps one of the iTunes visualisers playing along with the music. Another possibility would be to use FrontRow on the Mac.
A different approach would be to have the Mac mini stream over a network to a device e.g. the Sonos Zoneplayer which is then connected to the AV Receiver. An AirPort Express is also able to do this.

Hello, since nobdy else has replied...
    Long shot, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there.

    Hey NelanieA. Antoni,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
So your iPad turns off on its own. Take a look at this article. Even though it says iPhone the same troubleshooting steps apply.

If MacKeeper corrupted the Recovery partition then even I underestimated its potential for damage. Garbage "cleaning" apps will cause misery but I have not found that the Recovery partition to have been affected by using MacKeeper or anything like it. I doubt that it did so, but I have learned not to underestimate the potential for such things to result in system corruption.
Before concluding your Mac has a hardware failure, try booting OS X Internet Recovery by holding command option r on startup (three fingers). That will force your iMac to bypass the Recovery partition altogether, and convey the ability to create a new one.
An Internet connection will be required (wired or wireless).
At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red. If Disk Utility reports "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK" in green then you can be reasonably (though not completely) assured your hard disk is in good working order.
Assuming the HD remains usable you can then use Disk Utility to erase it. Reinstall OS X, restore your essential software and other files, and don't reinstall the junk.

  • I have a Iphone 4s and a ipad mini. the ipad mini recently got water damage, tried the rice trick...nothing. I have apple care plus on my iPhone, does that work on my ipad too? if so that would be great bc  defintally can't afford a new one ,lol

    Welcome to the boards.
First, what kind of liquid was it, and was it fully submersed?  For how long?  Do you see water droplets or moisture behind the screen?  How long did you leave it in rice for?  Etc.  More data please.
And the short answer is no, apple care does not extend from your iPhone to your iPad mini.  Both items require separate Apple Care plans to be covered.  Furthermore, I don't think water damage is covered under Apple Care.  Only manufacturing defects.
If you bought it on a Credit Card, you may be lucky enough to call them and ask them if they have a replacement program as a benefit for being a card holder.  I believe AMEX has one on their Platinum cards, and worse case scenario, you can always try to file a claim with your home insurance or renters insurance  (check your policy).  Just beware, if you go the Insurance route in filing a claim, you might have your premium go up in the next cycle.
    It's a double edged sword, I'm sorry.

  • HT4060 I can't find a definite answer anywhere regarding whether or not you need to turn the iPad mini off before charging. So my question is should I turn the iPad mini off or leave it on before charging? Thanks in advance.

I rarely if ever turn my iPad off. I charge it when the battery is low or at night while I'm sleeping. Even then I close the Smart Cover and let it sleep but I do not turn it off. It doesn't matter when you charge the iPad.
The most efficient way to charge the iPad is to use the charger that came with it and plug that into a known good wall outlet.

  • My iPad just died. The gear symbol came up and then the screen went blank (turned off). It was fully charged so that wan't the issue.

My iPad just died. The gear symbol came up and then the screen went blank (turned off). It was fully charged so that wan't the issue.

That is indicating that the device has gone into recovery mode. Press just the Power button until the red Power Off slider appears and slide to turn it off. Then power it back up to see if it has exited Recovery Mode. If it has, then you should be good to go.
If it has not, then the issue you had that caused the iPad to turn off was one that put your device into Recovery mode requiring that you go through the recovery process (i.e., the reset did not process since the issue required a recovery to resolve). Here is a link that explains what you need to do to get out of Recovery Mode in that case:

    Hello bettyf25
There could be a few things that could cause that issue. One is to make sure that the router settings are set to the recommended settings. The other is to go through the troubleshooting steps lied out in the articles below. This should give you a good starting point to get the issue resolved.

  • IPAD Mini Freezing up in installation mode as it is installing Update iOS 8.1.3 . I cannot turn off the iPAD Mini .  How do I resolve this problem?

iPAD Mini purchased for Xmas 2013 is freezing as it tries to complete the installation of the iOS update 8.1.3.  The screen his frozen on the installation mode and I cannot turn off the iPAD Mini.  How do I turn off the iPAD Mini and resolve this problem?

Try a reset, hold the power button and home button until you see the apple then let go. Also, it is iOS 8.2 that you are trying to install since that is the current version. I had no problems updating my mini today so hopefully yours will go well too.
