The grid array of my photo library has disappeared

iLife 08, iPhoto 6.0.6, Snow Leopard 10.6.8, iMac Intel Core 2 Duo
I loaded my 4th of July pictures and began editing them, but in the afternoon of July 5th the screen changed from the scrollable grid array of my entire iPhoto Library to just one big photo at a time, no editing tools available.
This has me completely stuck as this mode eliminates any means I have of seeing my photos (except one by one) and editing, saving, sending...
Aaaaargh!

Look at the scroll bar at the bottom and move it to the left to get the thumbnail size you want.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
    Missing tracks
Typically this can happen because a file or folder is accidentally shunted to the wrong location. iTunes can also get confused if it expects to be talking to an external drive which isn't there. If will often reset the default media folder location and may have trouble finding files in the old folders.
Select one of your tracks that is missing in action. Press CTRL-I to Get Info. Cancel when asked to try to locate the file, then look at the location given on the summary tab. This where iTunes thinks the file ought to be? Now find out where it actually is. Post back the two locations for comparison. I should be able to give you some steps to reconnect everything once I can determine which of the things that might have gone wrong is most likely in your case.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • Photo Library has disappeared

I have just tried to look at my photos through Iphoto but the library has completely disappeared.  Many thousands of photos are completley gone!  How can i get them back?  What has caused this problem? No I didnt delete it.
    Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

Updates don't disturb data - not going to say it never happens but I've never lost just one file due to an update. If you've not been backing up your computer regularly and the iPhoto Library isn't hiding somewhere then you've lost your photos.
TimeMachine is Apple's backup program that performs hourly backups to prevent accidental loss of data.
EasyFind is a very useful and easy to use search program. Download it and search for iPhoto Library. If it has somehow moved elsewhere on your computer, EasyFind will find it.

  • My i photo library has disappeared!!!

This morning I realised that my I photo has disappeared. The message said "we can not open i photo because you have no more library"
I tried to find it by the Research in the menu folder but it was not exist.
    So I went to: User/pictures:iphotolibrary:originals folder but it says that I have no application to open the folder;
    Thank you for your help.
    Vahine

    Hello Vahine,
Could you please explain this message "we cannot open iphoto because you have no more library".
This is not a message that is generated by the iphoto program. If the library is missing then iphoto will offer to create a new library or let you search for your current library.
I would consider running a search of your entire hard drive using the File > Find command for any folder with the name "iphoto library".
Once you locate those folders you can then tell iphoto to use them as its library by launching the iphoto program with the option key and then selecting the desired folder.
    Hope that helps.
    Cheer!

  • The music from my itunes(11) library has disappeared what to do?

    Hi,
I can see all the music 9.5k tracks in the store 'purchased' button, but no sign of the tracks in the library, previously all the tracks were stored in the iCloud and not on the machine. Only Music has been affected, TV / Movies / Books / apps etc are all still there. Is there a means of restoring the library direct to the cloud, missing out the hard drive on my MacBook?
    thanks
    Matt

    Hi ejpre,
Thank You, I tried to follow your guidel and 'View" doesn't offer me the "Show Music in the Cloud" option, I only have a light grey/ not currently working "Hide in the Cloud" option. But thanks for the suggestions.
    Cheers
    Matt

My father-in-law's photo library has thousand of "stock photos"(such as the guitar from garage band) surrounding his actual photos.  What is the easiest way for me to clean this up for him? Karen

Can you tell me how to do that and how to do it without erasing his actual photos which are intermingled?
    ThanK You.

PS We are only in town for a few more hours & I'd love to get this done for him. He's in PA & I'll never be able to walk him through this by phone:)

  • When I open iphoto the following message appears 'Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable'

when I open iphoto the following message appears 'Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable'

Reboot you system, if you have not already done so - this should take care of the "in use by another application" part of the message.
If the problem persist you will need to create a new library or to repair your library, or to restore it from your backup.
If you do not yet have any images in your iPhoto Library simply move it to the Trash and hold down the option-key while launching iPhoto again. This will give you the option to create a new iPhoto Library or to pick another one, if you have other libraries.
To fix your current library, or to restore it from backup, if you already have pictures inside that you need to save, see Terence Devlin's posts here:

  • Photos must quit because the photo library has become unavailable or its data is corrupt

    Hello,
As many of you, I've installed photos. This is my problem: I am an enthusiastic photographer that keeps around 10K photos per year (approx. 60GB), and while I have several years of pictures, I've just get the last 5 years. To be honest, I never liked iphoto to organize my pictures, I rather use Picasa. The way how pictures get organized, the poor effects tweaks to photos, the lack of freedom to keep an online folder...etc.
But with this new Photos, well, what the heck let's give it a chance.
It seemed cool, all my devices connected, iCloud (very limited storage though), new nice quick effects... the organization of pictures also seemed improved. the UI as usual with apple apps, pretty neat and clean.
Did I mentioned that I have several hundreds of GB of pictures? Well, a detail, I keep it in my time capsule to have them handy when I need it. With picasa, I just need to ensure that time capsule is waked, and pictures get recognized at once.
With photos, I've tried with 1 year, 10,000 pictures and.... very disappointed, it shutdown every 1 minute saying "Photos must quit because the photo library has become unavailable or its data is corrupt"...
Do I missing something here? is this supposed to be better than iPhoto? Time Capsule is not able to send steady signal to get my library online?

Not sure exactly whats going on with that given how new Photos is. But, Picasa works because differently than Photos because it doesn't use a centralized library. Picasa will just scan the entire computer and reference it in that location. Photos libraries, while sometimes problematic, are superior because as you've experience moving all the content is as simply as moving a single file.
    Suggestions I would try:
Make sure Photos is quit. Hold down Command + Option on keyboard and click Photos icon to launch. Keep holding until you get a dialog box about repairing the library.  Proceed with repair.
Move the library, if size permits, to your local HD on the computer and attempt to open and use.
Create a new library by holding Option on keyboard and launching Photos.  Choose to create a new library and make sure it's placed in your ~/Pictures folder. If that works you know its library specific.
Right click on the external drive (also accomplished by holding Control when click), choose get info on the drive.  Bottom of new window expand (if not already) the sharing and permissions section.  Click lock icon and provide administrator password. If available, which it should be if using same drive for a Time Machine backup, check box to ignore permissions.

  • My photos library has been loading for four days.  Any idea what the issue might be?

My iCloud photos library has been trying to load for four days.  What is the issue?

    Greetings ok_takem,
After reading your post, it sounds like you are experiencing an issue with photo syncing. You may want to consider restarting the device first, and then resetting if that does not work. This article provides detailed instructions for Restarting, and Reseting:

  • Error message: Photos must quit because the photo library has become unavailable or its data is corrupt.

I suddenly get this error message when trying to open and use Photos. "Photos must quit because the photo library has become unavailable or its data is corrupt."
I can't find a solution to fix the problem.

The only version of iPhoto that works with 10.10.3 is iPhoto 9.6.1 which must be downloaded from the App Store. What version of iPhoto do you have installed?

  • User 2 photo library has become unreadable

I am the adminstrator of our iMac. My wife is the other user and when she tries to access her photo library a message appears: "photo library has become unreadable .." Does anyone know how to resolve this?

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • My Top Rated songs, when I synch my iP4S - comes up with an error message saying it can't find all the songs. When I check, library has songs listed but with a "!" bubble next to them. When I click on them they play. What am I doing wrong?

When synching, itcomes up with an error message saying it can't find all the songs. When I check, library has songs listed but with a "!" bubble next to them. When I click on them they play. What am I doing wrong? This happens every time so I click them and it sorts them (boring with 200 odd). How can I prevent this?

Once you successfully add you iTunes library to iTunes Match, you go to Settings>iTunes & App Store on your iOS device and turn on iTunes Match.  Your iTunes Match library will then appear on your iOS device.

Don't know what changed today but it downloaded and installed on the shuffle. So far so good.

  • ICloud photo library has not updated in 73 days

    "Connect to wifi to update"
Phone is rarely not connected to Wifi, obviously.
    Anyone else getting this?

    Hello Welles13,
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. iCloud Photo Library beta requires a Wi-Fi connection to upload photos and videos:
iCloud Photo Library beta FAQ - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT6378
When do photos and videos upload to iCloud Photo Library?
When you turn on iCloud Photo Library on your devices, your photos and videos will begin to upload after you connect to the Internet using Wi-Fi. You can see the status on the Photos tab and pause upload for one day from Settings > iCloud > Photos.
Depending on your Internet connection speed, the time it takes for your photos and videos to appear on all of your devices might vary.
    Cheers,
    Matt M.
