The History Eraser in Inaction

I have had the need to do a specific erasure and can't seem to do it.
I have a file with a b&w conversion layer applied. I come back a few days later and decide that a portion of the image needs attention, so I open the b&w layer and make a few changes using the sliders for the color range involved. But later, I realize that in one portion of the image, I rather preferred the earlier version. Now, here's the rub: If I use the eraser on the layer, I wind up erasing to background. So, I select the history eraser, set the erase point in history to just before the change I made...and nothing happens. I can't erase that portion of the image, or any part, back to the pre-adjusted state. I can click on that history state and the whole image reverts to that state, but I can't erase to it.
Is this possibe to do?

it is, but with a workaround. Go to the state that you want to paint with and make a new document out of that state(button at the bottom of the History panel) and then with the Clone Stamp tool, set the source to the document you just created, go to your original image back to the final state, make a new layer and paint on it with the Clone Stamp tool. To get perfect alignment, after you set a source point, make sure that you have Aligned selected, click once in the original image with the Clone Stamp tool, go to Window->Clone Source, set the Offset to 0 for both X and Y and undo that cloning step. Now when you start cloning you will have perfect alignment between the two documents

• Annoying 'Could not use the history eraser because the current canvas size does not match that of the history state' message

Does anyone know if it is possible to get rid of the message 'Could not use the history eraser because the current canvas size does not match that of the history state'?. It comes up if I hit the alt/option key while I have the eraser selected. Something I do by accident all the time.

The way you've described it, one gets the distinct impression you do not have a clue as to what the history brush does and how to use it.
You need to read up on it. Read the Help files and google for tutorials.
First you need to create an image (with actual pixels in it), edit it as desired, then make a snapshot of the edited image, then target the snapshot with the history brush tool, then go back in the History panel to the step before your edits and selectively paint your edits in with the History Brush.

• When I type in web searches, Firefox remembers them with a system similar to predictive text. How can I erase the search history list, because deleting the history with the organise tool doesn't work. Please help.

When I type in searches I don't want a box to appear under the search box trying to predict what I'm going to type next. Can I disable the system(prediction box) or erase the history list or both?

Thanks for the suggestion, but no effect, when I right click on the search bar all I get is; select all (which does nothing), add keyword to this search (which is the opposite of what I want) and add dictionary (again adding something). Do you have any other ideas? :)

• How do I find out if a child has erased part of the history i Firefox?

I am a concerned parent and I want to know if my child has has been erasing part of the history in firefox. How can you tell if part has been erased? I see it is VERY easy for them to erase portions and even selected sights. This is great for the person trying to hide, but not for a parent wanting to check.

Best is to use means outside Firefox to keep a log of websites that are visited like a router with a password protected logging feature or security software (firewall) that keeps a log.

• How do I stop my child from erasing the "history" on mozilla? Is there a way to password protect it so only I can access it?

My teenager erased the history each time he goes on so that I don't see where he was (so he doesn't get in trouble for going to youtube when he should be doing homework). I'd like to be able to password protect the history so he can no longer erase it. Can you please advise me.

One option is to use the Public Fox add-on to password protect parts of Firefox including the option to clear recent history - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/public-fox/
The downside of using an add-on is that it is quite easy to bypass. An alternative approach is to use a third party parental control application that stores its own log of sites that are visited. If the Firefox list is cleared, the sites will still be shown in the other application. One such application is the free K9 web protection - http://www.k9webprotection.com/

Download a new copy of the Firefox program: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html
Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean reinstall.

If not:
iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem. A trick that works frequently with iPhones:
Settings > AirPlane Mode ON, Do Not Disturb ON
Power down and wait 5-10 minutes
Power up
Settings > AirPlane Mode OFF, Do Not Disturb OFF
If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
Then:
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Power off and then back on the router
- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
- iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
- Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
- iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
- Restore from backup. See:
iOS: How to back up
- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

• Can I delete contents of the history cache?

I was trying to do a poor man's backup of a my wife's root folder (and all it contains) by simply dragging her root folder into a net drive I have mounted. It's worked before. And it's an expedient method until I settle on a real backup app.
Half way through the 50-minute process, the system says that the receiving file system choked on a filename that was too long and (after I ack'd the warning) it aborted the partially completed copy cycle. With some terminal magic I was able to locate the offending file ... just one of many in ~/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/History/ having an extremely long file name.
Not knowing how Safari actually manages history references, I avoided the temptation of deleting any of these directly, thinking instead that using Safari's history clearing service would do the trick. .... nah! ...
It does clear "http:" references, but for some reason leaves "https:" references intact. (Go figure???) and a lot of these have names of a greater length than the original file that choked my copy file command.
So I'm back to my temptation of clearing out the whole darn ~/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/History/ folder. (1) Is that advisable? (2)If I do that, is there anything else I should do to correctly implement the 'manual' history expulsion? I do not mind permanently losing the ability to restore the history records I'm wiping out?
All I am seeking is the answer to the above two questions.
But my experience does beg the wider question "How does one really completely and effectively delete the entire browsing history? - note: here I just mean return all safari history data storage to the 'available storage heap' .... don't even need to securely erase it (though this might be useful too), I just don't want it to be inside my wife's storage hierarchy anymore, so I can get on with my 'easy' backup hack.

Hi
...clearing out the whole darn ~/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/History/ folder.
1) Is that advisable?
it's no great loss - although it contains not actual history, but data about it, Meaning you can lose that folder entirely & not see any change in Safari's record of where you've been.
(2)If I do that, is there anything else I should do to correctly implement the 'manual' history expulsion?
No, just do it while Safari's quit - or occasionally the app might write the file again.
"How does one really completely and effectively delete the entire browsing history?
everything in the Safari folder less bookmarks;
Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/;
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari;
~/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/;
~/Library/Cookies/
would be a good start

• How to track the history of supplier sites used for tax reporting (1099)

Hi,
Oracle financials doesn't allow two supplier sites setup as tax reportable sites (Unless one is inactive). Suppose if the supplier uses site1 for the year 2009 and site 2 for 2010 and now there is site3 setup as tax reportable. All three sites were setup in 2009 and all three sites are active. Supplier chosen different sites for each year as their tax reportable site.
How do we know which site oracle used to send 1099 for 2009 & 2010? How to track the history of supplier sites used for tax reporting (1099) in previous years?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Ram

Would the begin_date, end_date and status columns on HZ_PARTY_SITES_USES be any good? Our R12 installations is too new to have accumulated much data yet, but I would look in those columns first.

• "Preview" history, I am running lion and when I double click on the preview icon in the dock, it seems to be showing me the history and not the "minimized" images only

When I am running "Preview" of few images and minimized 1 of them, if I double tap the tracking pad, magix mouse etc..., the gesture should show me what is currently open, the upper part of the screen and what is minimized, in the lower part of the screen. Instead, I get a lot of images at the bottom part along with the minimized images, it seems like it is showing me the history files as well. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Can I erase the history of "Preview"?
Thank You

Another bug or new stupid apple design....
I tried everything including setting no history in the General control panel. I also removed the reopen window that I don't like by default....
But it seems impossible at all... It is part of the very bad design introduced in Lion. Lion is the Vista made by Apple.

• A question about using the history tool after using the extraction tool in photoshop cs3..

For example:
http://www.layersmagazine.com/photoshop-...
When I use the history tool, it erases the image instead. Whats up with that?

G'day Chris
I can't tell from the link exactly which tutorial you mean!
If the original layer is a white background and the snapshot is set to this then the history tool will paint back white even if you then paste or drag an image onto the layer above this.
You would have to take a seperate snapshot of your image layer and set this layer as the snapshot you want the history tool to use before you start working on it.
One neat thing you can do is if you paint back some detail with the history brush you can immediately go to Edit > Fade and fine tune how much of the effect you want to apply.
Hope this helps.
regards

• Being the adminstrator how cn i trace the history of the private browsing on my computer by other users or myself

i would like to know if there is any option to trace the web browsing in private setting on my computer by other users who use my computer

It is always possible to erase the history even in normal mode, so you can never trust the history that you see in a browser.
Firefox doesn't store any data to disk in Private Browsing mode.
You will need a firewall or other security software or router with a (password protected) logging feature if you want a history record that is reliable.

I just now accidently cleared the history of texts on one contact on an Iphone 5. Can I retireve it?

Restore the entire device from the most recent backup (hopefully created prior to erasing the converstation history). This will put the ENTIRE device back exactly as it was when the backup was created.

• [IOS6]How do i delete the history of the purchased app from appstore?

After you swipe from left to right a red box will come up that says hide where it previously said installed or has the cloud downloaded sign.
Touch hide. The apps that you have chosed to hide will temorarily dim until you close our of the i store program.
anyway it dont seem that the history can be hide if you upgrade to IOS 6...
It is very annoying to have a long list of purchased history in the appstore from my iphone.
is there any app or ways to remove those list?

It seems you can't do this anymore from the iphone/ipad appstore which is a real problem.
It seems though that you can do this via the iTunes app.
Go to the app store > purchased history
From there all your apps bought will appear.
Mouse over on the app icon you want to hide, an x icon will appear on the top left. Click the icon and the app will disappear.
Close your app store on your iphone/ipad, launch it again and the app should have disappeared.
Although, I don't know if it "hides" or "erases" the app from your history, there's no explanation...
This should be a solution while they FIX THIS in the next update!!

• How do I open multiple locations from the History after selecting them with Ctrl+click?

Let's say I want to read some of the Mother Jones and Alternet articles I'd linked to from e-mails over the past in two months. I open my Firefox history. I do a search of the history libary to get a list of all the relevant locations. Then I use Control+click to select the few articles I want to read. I'd think Ctrl+O would open all those selected, but it doesn't. There must be a more efficient way than what I'm doing now, which is to open a new tab in the browser window, go to history, double click one line, wait for the page to load; open a new tab, go back to the history search results, click on a new location, wait as it loads, repeat.

Where are you viewing your History?
Have you tried the History Sidebar? {Ctrl + H}
You can {Ctrl + Click} the pages you want to open in new Tabs, one at a time.
Also, if you have your Options > Tabs pref deselected for '''When I open a new tab, switch to it immediately''', it might be less distracting with all those pages opening in the background.
