The "hold" button conspiracy

Is it true that putting your ipod on hold wastes battery life?
People i know say it does, and so far,(i'm testing this hypothesis), it seems to be increasing my battery--pretty good actually.
But also, is it really worth it? I mean, does the hold button really take that much battery power?

Set the Hold switch on iPod and its remote to the Hold position whenever you are not using iPod. This will keep iPod from accidentally waking from sleep and playing songs if its buttons are pressed while in a pocket or bag.
A slight amount of battery charge is lost when an iPod is turned off. If fully charged, the battery will be completely drained in 30 days or so even if not turned on.

  • Nano 5g and the hold button

About a week ago I turned the hold button on and couldn't get the hold button to turn off for almost then an hour. Then it just stopped and I haven't had the problem since. For the last three days, I've been having a different problem with the hold button. When I push the button to the hold position, it's like the ipod doesn't register it right away. It can take anywhere from 10 seconds to 1 minute for the hold symbol to come on and the ipod to actually be in the hold cycle.
I fully charged the ipod and reset it by pressing menu and select but that didn't change anything. Anyone know whats happening and how I can fix it?

Try putting it in "Disk Mode" http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651 and then restoring it with ipod updater 06-28-2006

  • My ipod is turning on and off with  the hold button

Yesterday, my ipod ran out of batteries. I tried to turn it on to charge via a USB cable. It now turns of when the hold button goes into the hold position. Therefore I can't move the wheel. The batteries have been fully charged. Help?

"It now turns of when the hold button goes into the hold position. Therefore I can't move the wheel."
That's the whole idea of the hold button. It disables the iPod controls so you won't be able to use the clickwheel.

  • My ipods frozen on the white apple and black background page. I've tried resetting with the hold button, but nothing's changed. How can I fix this!?

My ipods frozen on the white apple and black background page. I've tried resetting with the hold button, but nothing's changed. How can I fix this!?

    Try this...
    Restarting your device
    1)   Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider.
    2)   Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Follow these steps to reset your device
Note: Reset your device only if it is no longer responding and the steps above do not work.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    Restart / Reset

  • Influence of the hold button on power consumption

    Hi,
does the hold button reduce power consumption when turned on, even when you do not accidentally touch the clickwheel and activate the ipod? Is power consumption also reduced when you turn the hold button on after shutting the ipod down and putting it away? Or are these effects minor/non-existent?
I read the ipod also consumes power when it is turned off, is this caused by its internal hard disk?

Like many electronic devices these days, iPods, PDAs, Cell phones, and even your computer, none of them are truly completely off anymore. As you might note, almost all devices these days have momentary push buttons to turn them "ON". In reality, there has to be some people to monitor these buttons and wake up the rest of the device when the power button is activated. So yes there is always some level of power being consumed by your iPod all the time since it has to keep monitoring the click wheel on the front to see if you are asking it to power up again.
As to power consumption, your two largest users of battery power are the hard drive spinning and the backlight being on. If neither of these are active, then the iPod is likely using very little power even when there is a display (with no backlight) and someone less when the display goes off completely (the iPod is asleep). The state of the hold switch is not likely to effect power usage one way or the other. Basically is it is nothing more than a state reported to the processor to ignore other key presses including power on. So like when you need to push the front wheel to get the iPod to turn on and the iPod is always monitoring those buttons to be pressed, it is also monitoring that hold switch to see if it should act on any of those buttons. So even when the hold switch is off, it is still being monitored regardless.

Phone black screen no sound completly dead
    Please help

Try holding the Sleep/Wake button the the Home button together until you see the Apple logo and release. The phone should start up.
If it doesnt, then try holding the Home button, plugging into iTunes, and release the Home button after iTunes sees the phone in Recovery Mode.
Restore the device at this point.
If given the option, restore as new.

  • The hold button won't work and this morning i cracked the screen!!

    Hello,
I was wondering if anyone can help me! The hold switch on my ipod nano does not work, or is very slow. It only works if I press down very hard on the hold button. This is of course very frustrating!
However, just this morning I cracked the screen.I know that cracked screens are accidental damage and are therefore not covered by warranty, but the hold button was not working before the screen was cracked- it is just bad luck that this has happened before sending my ipod off to Apple to see if they can resolve the issue.
Does anyone know if it is possible to get the hold-button issue fixed even though the screen is cracked? I am a bit of a disaster area with electrical goods, having cracked the screen of my laptop and of my phone in the past!
    Thanks

I believe it is a hardware issue, you have to send it
    repairing.
yeah but I won't be able to get the repair done on warranty, will I?

  • When restarting my iPad 1 freezes on the apple logo. It even does when I try and do a reset by holding power and the hold button for 10 seconds.

When restarting my iPad 1 freezes on the apple logo. It even does when I try and do a reset by holding power and the hold button for 10 seconds.

If the reset doesn't work, you have to force the iPad into Recovery Mode
    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
    2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
    3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button.
    5. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: You need to be patient and repeat the above many times to recover your iPad. Data will be lost.

  • Help with the hold button on my ipod

First, my ipod was starting to act up so I went onto the apple website and reset the ipod using what they told me to do (hold the menu and the center button at the same time) which of course I lost everything. Well when it came back on I plugged it into my computer and it recognized it and everything, acted like it was syncing my music and videos and when I unplugged it, only the names of the artist and songs were on it, 3 songs actaully went thru corrently, one of them for some reason was cut short the other was somehow mixed in with another song. I thought it was my computer so I tried it with my mother's laptop. It did the same thing. Then it decided it wouldn't turn on for anything, I plugged it into the charger and now it charges and comes on but the hold button won't go off, I've tried flicking the switch tons of times, I've tried resetting it, but with the hold button on I can't do anything. How can I get the hold button off. The warrenty is expired on it, is there a way I could take it back to apple for a new one or a refurbished one, for free? Or would I have to pay like $150 for it? Is there a way I could fix it at home?

  • IPod abrubtly cuts off and only comes back on when you unlock the hold button. why and how can i fix this?

I listen to my iPod Classic at work and it kept cutting off today out of nowhere and this hasn't happened before. I have it in my pocket so I have the HOLD button in the lock position so the wheel won't get pressed while in my pocket. I figured it died on me but I had just charged it last night so I took it out and unlocked the HOLD button. Well, the music immediately came back on. It happened a few more times and i figured maybe it was the song or something so I changed albums and it kept happening. Every time it would cut off, I'd unlock the HOLD button and it'd come back on every time, almost like it was paused or something. Has anyone experienced this? if so, how do I fix it? I really don't want to buy a new iPod since I have little money because of school, bills, and photography/film equipment. Help? thanks.

I'm having a hard time finding an answer to this too.  This is what is going on.  Sometimes the iPod (iPod Classic 160GB) does not "like" the songs I've downloaded from cds.  Sometimes it does.  I think it always plays whatever songs I've purchased on iTunes though.  The other day I synced it to add two new cds and somehow the iPod was wiped clean--no songs, no pictures, nothing. I did a reset and the songs came back but now these problems:
    1. The song will play for a few seconds then it either skips to the next song.
    2. The song won't play, just skips to the next song.
    3. Everything just stops, the iPod is still 'on' but won't play anything.
    4. Right now it's playing an Aimee Mann album that I downloaded but it wouldn't play the Joni Mitchell album just before.  Is the iPod making a comment on my taste in music?
Flipping the lock back and forth helps sometimes, but not always.
I bought this device less than two years ago; I really hope it's not permanently messed up. Should I just go to the Apple Store (please I beg of you, don't make me!) and throw myself at their mercy?
Help!! My iPod is the only thing that gets me through the day in this office.

  • Hi. The buttons and wheel of my iPod 4th generation do not work. The hold button resets the iPod, and the shuffle shake works. The music plays by shuffling but I can't access albums etc due to the buttons and wheel not working.

    Did you restore from backup?
Next would be to restore to factory settings/new iPod since maybe you have some corruption in the backup

  • Ipod touch 4g has broken pins and the hold button is defective, is it eligible for off warranty replacement  online it says it'd be $99.99

    i have an ipod touch 4g 16gb ios 6.1.5.
the dock port pins are damaged badly, music has not played for a while but is come and go now. dont know why (without headphones)
and the hold button doesn't work,  will apple still honor the "off warranty replacement thingy" i had issues with my old ipod (not dock issues)
i know they check the dock port on arrival, but i need to know if the ipod will qualify or not
    thanks in advance

Almost assuredly the answer is yes.  Take it to an Apple store for replacement or contact them using the Contact Us link at the bottom of this page.

  • A problem with the hold button

I have had a fully functional ipod Nano 3g since I bought it. The other day the hold button did something weird. It usually clicks left or right easilly. It clicks right or in "hold" position now, but I have to push hard to slide it about 3/4 to the left or "unlock" side. It can be held or unheld but i was just getting annoyed with pushing hard. Please help

me too i have the same problem but no one answer
