The /home directory

Good Day,
While installing Catia in the /home directory, I'm getting permission errors. Normally this is where Catia has to be installed. What has changed with the /home directory under Solaris 9. It appears to be
a reserved directory for the system.
Ben

/home has always been reserved for the automounter, at least since Solaris 8 :)
If, in the past, you were able to install software into /home, it means that (at the time) you had a proper configuration set up for the user in question.
If, for instance, you want to install something into /home/userA you need to make sure that either the NIS+ table auto_home.org_dir or the file /etc/auto_home shows where the automounter can find the physical home directory for userA. There are some shortcuts which you can take.
For instance, you can enter one line into /etc/auto_home which ensures that ALL directories in /home get mounted from serverA:/export/home/$username (or whichever other location counts as the physical location). This line is:
* serverA:/export/home/&
You will of course also need to be running the automount daemon, which is started with /etc/init.d/autofs.

  • How can I use the /home directory

I'm doing development work on my Mac (running Snow Leopard). The output location for the production server I use is under "/home/subdir". I'd like to develop my files on the Mac so they reside in the same relative location, but from the default install this is not possible.
The /home directory is hidden by default. If I view hidden files, it looks like a mounted hard drive, but with no space. If I try to do something in the /home directory, I get "Operation not supported". For example, from the command line "sudo mkdir /home/test" returns "mkdir: /home/test: Operation not supported".
(Originally, when I was useing Leopard, I moved the installed /home to /home_old and created my own /home directory, but the install to Snow Leopard reverted it back to the locked out /home dir. The other one was preserved, but it makes me nervous enough that I don't want to try it again without some reassurance.)
So, the question: Is there a safe way to use /home on a Mac running Snow Leopard?

Found the answer in another forum post here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2073807&tstart=0
To get the /home directory back. Edit /etc/auto_master and remove or comment out the line that starts with "/home". Then reboot.

  • Is there a file in which OSX stores the home directory path, where to find it and how to edit it in Windows 7?

    Hi everyone,
I have a SSD with the System and Apps on it, and another HDD containing the home directory.
I made the mistake to rename the Volume the home directory is on whilst being logged in, the system reacted accordingly and prompted some Password requests,
and I then tried to choose the newly named Volume in the Advanced options dialogue in Users & Groups (example seen below).
I tried to change the name back to what it was in the hope of it all being back to normal again, but instead it's completely messed up now and I cannot login anymore (prompt: "You are unable to log in to the user account "xxxx" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred")
All I can do now is boot my Windows 7 and try to fix this from there, I can read/write the OSX Volumes thanks to MacDrive.
So now the big question is:
IS THERE A FILE containing the path to the home directory (red arrow)?
IF SO, WHERE can I find it?
And is there a way to edit it in Windows?
My guess is that if I rename the Volume, AND change this path to something identical again, it might solve the issue.
    Thanks!

  • How to stop the removing a user account and saving the home directory  to a disk image?

I tried to delete one of two administers on my iMac (10.10.1). After more than 12 hours it will not let me quit System Preferences for it "is removing a user account and saving the home directory to a disk image". How do I finish deleting the administer and quit System Preferences?

  • Hudson - Unable to create the home directory

Hello, I installed tomcat and downloaded hudson.war and put it into
    /opt/tomcat/webapps/hudson.war
I'm able to navigate to localhost:8080/hudson, but I only see this message:
Unable to create the home directory {0}. This is most likely a permission problem.
To change the home directory, use HUDSON_HOME environment variable or set the HUDSON_HOME system property. See Container-specific documentation for more details of how to do this.
I've set HUDSON_HOME in a gazillion places -- yet none of them has done any good.
Can anyone point me to a solution?
    Thanks,

  • How do you setup a user mobile account, with the home directory stored locally and not synced to the server?

I want to be able to setup a user mobile account, with the home directory stored locally and not synced to the server.  What is the best way to do this? I am running Server 10.6 with 10.6 clients.  Open Directory will be used to authenticate and manage preferences.   Also, this one account will be used simultaneosly in a computer lab setting, so files will be stored locally in the client, hence the need to NOT sync to the server.  Any Ideas?

The attached screen shots should help you:
You will only have to do this step once. Obviously you want to use the user's shortname here.
Then, you will see this as an option in WGM:

  • Mail Reports that the home directory is full

My iBook has Norton Firewall on it and when I connected it to the high speed internet in a hotel room, the Firewall went crazy logging thousands of hits in a few minutes. Eventually the iBook stopped and a multi-lingual message requested that I reboot the iBook.
In the meantime, I had started the Mail program.
Once I managed to get the iBook working again, (it took some time and I had to restart the machine with the shift key down), I ran the usual disk clean-up utilities, Disk Utility, DiskWarrior and Drive Genius. The machine then rebooted and everything except mail worked correctly. Mail will not start but instead reports the following:
    Mail cannot update your mailboxes
because your home directory is full.
You must free up space in your home folder before
using Mail. Delete unneeded documents or move
    documents to another volume.
There is lots of free disk space on this machine and I can work with files with other programs so I think a mail file must be corrupted. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who knows how to fix this problem.

  • Change the home directory from terminal for another copy of the OS.

    Mac Mini OS X 10.8.1
Main drive for OS Vertex 4 SSD
Data on other Drive Seagate Goflex Thunderblot 3TB on a 1 TB Partition.
Backup of both Main drive and Data drive on a 3rd drive.
When i boot into the back it uses the data from the thunder bolt drive and not the data drive backup.
If the orginial data drive ever became damaged and i need to point to the other data backup drive can this be done from terminal on another boot drive.
let says Drive A is the OS X 10.8
Drive B is the main data drive.
Drive C has 2 partition C1 for OS X and C2 for Data backup.
When booting from Drive C it gets its data from Drive B because its a clone of A.
If drive B becomes dmaged I will not be able to boot from drive C. ( This has happend )
With a Clean install on drive D I can boot. How can i use terminal to Tell Drive C1 to use data from C2 instead of Drive B?
    Hope I explained this well.

Can you explain exactly what "the issue" is?
You can use dscl from the command line to change a home directory (as described in this hint), but that still requires you to be using that startup volume. Hence, it is no different than using System Preferences. If System Preferences won't work for you, then dscl probably wouldn't either.

  • Accidentally changed the path of the home directory and now I can not get access my profile.

before the way was /valumes/macintosh hd/igor but then i decided  to remove a space between macintosh and HD then I restarted my mac and after reloading I can not get access my profile. Thanks for the helping.

Boot up holding command-r keys into your Recovery Volume and re-install OS X on the volume.
This will be an install "in place" and shouldn't effect any of your own data or settings.

  • How do I enable opening firefox from two different computers sharing the same home directory without having to delete a lock file (linux).

I just don't want to have to delete a lock file - which has a purpose - in order to use firefox simultaneously from two locations on the network - where the home directory, i.e. .mozilla directory - is located

You need to use two separate profiles if you want to have two Firefox instances open at the same time.

  • How can I change the name of my home directory?

When I first set up my Macbook Pro a year ago, I put my first and last name. I didn't like this and later changed the login name to just my first name, but the "home" directory is still listed as my full name on the side panel in Finder windows. How can I change this, it won't let me rename that.

    Barney-15E wrote:
You should have experienced that same effect when you managed to change you login name. How did you change your login name?
I imagine that has something to do with why everything 'disappeared' when you changed the directory name.
It's actually pretty simple to change the login name, and it doesn't affect files at all.
All I did was change the field labeled "user name".

  • How to get the user's home directory in Unix if I know the username?

I have a problem to determine a user's home directory in Solaris system.
for example, I know the username as "smith", how can I know smith's
home directory (the absolute path string)? pls help me...

    if the user is the one running the program, you can always get the home directory using System.getProperties ("user.home");
If you are trying to get the properties of another user, you could try using setProperties to change the user name first, before getiting the home directory, but it probably won't work because of the security manager. You could read the /etc/passwd file and parse the path out, but once again, the user of the code would have to have appropriate permission.
